West Midlands derby: Anichebe targets first Albion goal

Victor Anichebe has said he hopes to score his first goal at West Brom, while relishing the chance to swap Merseyside rivalry for a West Midlands battle.

The 25-year-old striker could have been lining up for Everton against Liverpool today – a fixture he never won in the nine he played during his time at Goodison Park.

But, following his summer move to the Black Country, he is now hoping his first derby victory comes in the white-hot atmosphere of Monday’s Hawthorns clash with near-neighbours Villa.

“Derbies are always fun; you can see the banter between the fans and the rivalry. You can’t beat the atmosphere. You look at derbies in different countries and they are not the same as in England. They are always nice to play in. They stir me up and help raise my game. I always enjoyed playing against Liverpool for Everton,” said Anichebe.

“It means so much to the fans and the atmosphere filters down into the players and makes you try that extra bit more. It pumps up your adrenalin even more. You can’t hide in a derby match, even if you’re nervous beforehand. The main thing is to focus on doing the right things like in any other game.

“You can’t get over-excited because that can lead to crazy tackles and red cards. We’re not going to over-hype things; it’s a game between two good teams and we’ll both go out to give our best. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Nigeria international has admitted he is still getting to grips with life at Albion, after moving from the club he grew up with. And he has thanked the coaches and senior pros who are helping him make the transition, as he aims to bag his first goal for the club against Paul Lambert’s men.

“Hopefully I can get my first derby win – and my first goal for the club. It would be a great time to get it! But I’m still new here; I’ve only played around five games so far. I’m still getting used to the whole set-up. But I’ve got good coaches and good senior pros here who I’ve been talking to try and adapt quicker to the way we play here,” Anichebe added.

“It’s only early days and hopefully I can kick on from here. I don’t worry about the goals because I think anyone who knows me around the league knows I put in good performances and I chip in with goals. So, not scoring yet doesn’t really worry me. I’ve had good performances against Manchester United and others.”

Musa laments: My goal was good

Ahmed Musa has said his goal for CSKA Moscow against Manchester City in the Champions League should not have been disallowed.

Musa scored a goal in the 80th minute when he unleashed an absolute screamer from the edge of the box into the top corner of the net after he received a ball from Japan star Honda.

However, the referee overruled this effort because he believed a high foot had nearly connected with Yaya Toure’s head who tried to clear but missed it.

“To me it was a good goal, I would have loved to see it stand because it would have given us a point from the game, but the referee felt otherwise, he has the final say,” Musa told MTNFootball.com.

Sergio Aguero scored a brace for Manchester City, while Tosic scored CSKA Moscow’s consolation goal.

CSKA are now third in the standings in Group D with three points behind Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who are on nine points and six points, respectively.

Nigeria international Ahmed Musa, a 50th minute substitute for Steven Zuber, said he was disappointed with the 2-1 loss to City at home on Wednesday.

“I was not happy that we lost the game, but that is football. We look forward to a positive result in the next game,” he told MTNFootball.com.

CSKA Moscow next game in the competition is away to Manchester City on Tuesday, November 5.

    First league goal excites Abalogu

Andrew Abalogu has told EnyimbaFC.net he is excited after scoring his first league goal for The People’s Elephant.

Abalogu’s 55th minute strike put Enyimba in front in their Matchday 35 Glo Premier League game against 3SC on Wednesday in Ibadan but Francis Edem drew the Oluyole Warriors level to ruin the forward’s victory party.

However, Abalogu insists his first league goal means a lot to him even though it did not give his side all three points.

“I am so happy to score today,” he said. “I have played a lot of league games but have not been lucky enough to score so this goal means that I can say ‘Yes, I have scored a league goal for Enyimba’.”

“Of course I would have wanted it to be the winning goal but they were given a penalty and we had to settle for a draw, but all the same, I’m pleased about everything. A point is better than nothing. Now we just have to focus on our next game against ABS [in Aba].

Wednesday’s goal is Abalogu’s third overall after two strikes in the Federation Cup against Remo Stars and the same 3SC. Enyimba’s leading goalscorer remains Ifeanyi Ede who have scored 10 goals in all competitions.
