    ‘What God has joined together…’

After a three-month clash, students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko (Oko Poly), Anambra State and their host-community have reconciled on the footbal pitch.

Though the host community defeated the polytechnic by 2-1, the match restored their relationship.

Last year, students clashed with residents of the community during Oko’s masquerade festival. The incident led to the closure of the polytechnic for about three months.

Speaking before the friendly match, the Rector, Prof Godwin Onu, said the community and the institution were brought together by divine will, adding that nothing could separate what God has joined together.

While congratulating the Oko youths for winning the match, Onu said: “This is the type of spirit and unity we want in this community.”

Apart from engendering peace, the Rector said, the match was imperative to the polytechnic to prepare students for the upcoming All Polytechnics Games.

He said: “I want to thank the youths of Oko community for organising this football match and I assure them that the spirit of unity will continue. We shall continue to work together until we make the polytechnic the best in Africa.

“The polytechnic is one of the higher institutions in the country where students move around without intimidation and molestation. We have been declared cult-free. Our matriculation was joyful and no bad story. Internal mechanism has been put in place to track down all forms of crime. Again, I thank the Oko community for accommodating our students.”

In demonstration of the management’s resolution to secure off-campus students and their property, the Rector donated a vehicle to the security outfit in the community to patrol the area. He said: “As an institution, we have a great sense of responsibility. We plead for co-operation among the security operatives and that of the polytechnic. The security outfits should work hand in hand to achieve maximum security especially with our students living around the community.

“To the students, we urge you to be of good behaviour. Don’t provoke any crisis no matter the level of provocation. The masquerade festival is around the corner, so comport yourselves to avoid violence and realise that you are living with people that have culture, which they will not throw away because you are living with them. Our mission here is to make the polytechnic the first in Africa.”

The President-General of Oko Progressive Union, Mr Cyprian Nwamuo, in a short speech after the match, praised the youths of the community for the innovation, which he said would foster peace and restore lasting peace in the community.

“Today, we have gathered here to witness a friendly football match between the students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko and the youths of Oko community. This event is very special and important at this time we are on the reconciliatory path after the sad event of last year,” he said.

He urged any member of the polytechnic community, who had issues with any member of the community not to hesitate to report at the town’s civic centre or to the polytechnic security outfit, promising that such reports would be addressed.

Nwamuo praised Onu for transforming the polytechnic, which he said had improved the rating of the community and urged him never to relent in his efforts to make the institution best among its peers.

The youth leader of the community, Barrister Duke Ezeonwuka, described the match as historic, praising the management for being supportive to youth associations in the community.

He reassured the polytechnic’s staff and students of their security in the community and pledged the support of the youths to Onu’s administration. He said students had been part and parcel of the community, adding that the community could not exist without the polytechnic.

Presenting the vehicle to the community, Onu said the gesture would encourage unity among the community and the institution.

Nwamuo, who received the vehicle on behalf of the community, thanked management for the gift, describing Onu as a Rector with a difference. He pledged the support of the host community to the progress of the polytechnic.

Be more forgiving, says Pope Francis

Pope Francis  has delivered his first Sunday prayer to a cheering, laughing crowd of about 300,000 people in St Peter’s Square, amid hopes that his down-to-earth style will usher in a change in the Vatican.

The Guardian of London reports that his capacity to rouse affection and optimism were in evidence as he mixed cheery greetings with humour and anecdotes at his inaugural Angelus.

Speaking in Italian rather than Latin, he joked with the crowd and ended by saying: “Have a good Sunday and a good lunch!” Pilgrims, many from Latin America, roared their approval.

Earlier on, Francis startled passersby in the Vatican when he emerged unannounced from a side gate. He then led mass at the small church of St Anna in the Vatican.

In St Peter’s Square, he spoke of God’s never-ending mercy and urged followers to be more forgiving. “A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just,” he said.

  • Leaders urged to fear God

    Leaders urged to fear God

Nigerian leaders have been advised to get closer to God in order to move the country forward.

The Senior Pastor of The Elect Gospel Assembly (Inc) Eagles Arena, Prophet Collins Obi Favour, gave the advice when preaching during a three-day programme tagged: Altar versus Altar at the church’s auditorium at Orilowo Ejigbo Lagos State.

The cleric said: “The ugly experiences the country is going through could be corrected if the leaders and the led should put God first in all they do. They should fear and worship God in truth and in spirit. We should engage God in all we do. Every one, no matter your position must acknowledge God. When we do this, He will even make our enemies to be at peace with us. Nigerians should correct the faulty foundation by doing what is right before God. If the righteous is on the throne, the people will rejoice.”

He stated that many people are undergoing great suffering because there are evil forces that try to silence people’s destiny.

“Since there is an Altar greater than other altars, we are calling upon Him to rise up and rescue His people. The Altar of God is coming against the altar of darkness.

“Christians should come out en masse and stand firmly on the Altar of God to counter the altar of darkness that is out to overshadow this country. I know Nigeria will rise and shine again. Soon, the Altar of God will exterminate the altar of darkness in this country.

“A faulty foundation has no respect for righteousness. The foundation must be right. Any city or country that is laid on a faulty foundation will suffer it in time to come.

“Children of God should endeavour to have a strong Altar with God so that the princes of this world would not get at us unprepared. If God is in a man, he will understand that nothing is done without God’s will. His will is uppermost in the heart of man.

  • College dedicates activities to God

The Bayelsa State College of Health Technology (BYCOHTECH) has held a solemn assembly to thank God for seeing the college through the past year. The management used the occasion to dedicate the college to God in the current year.

The event, which was jointly organised by the management and the Joint Christian Campus Fellowships (JCCF), BYCOTECH chapter, started with an opening prayer by Dr Memory Queensoap, who is the Dean of the college’s School of Foundation Studies. Hymns were also rendered by the congregation.

The Provost, Dr Teddy Charles, said it was imperative that the college handed over its programmes and activities to God in 2013. “As an institution, it is only wise that we offer ourselves anew every year, month, week and day to our creator. We set aside today to offer ourselves new unto God and to seek for His mercies and pray that He lead us through the rest of the activities of the year,” he said.

In his homily entitled God is able, the guest minister, Dr Patrick Awotula, reiterated God’s capability to do everything beyond human imagination. Reading from Ephesians 3:14 and Luke 5:11, the pastor advised the congregation to always hold unto God’s unchanging hand for the desired solutions to their problems.

According to him, man could only be saved if he accepted Jesus Christ as his saviour.

The JCCF president, Europe Stephen, who is a final year student of Environmental Health Technology, said: “Except the Lord builds the house, the builders build but in vain. We felt that beginning the New Year with a dedication service isn’t a bad option for the college.”

Dr Awotula led the congregation into a session of prayers dedicating the college management, members of staff and students to God. A brand new set of musical instruments acquired by the college were also dedicated to God.

Prince Stephen, 200-Level Environmental Health Technology, praised the management and the JCCF for organising the programme. Officials at the event included Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr Precious Oru-bo, Bursar, Mr Kiereseiye Aseria, Registrar, Chief Yousuo Iruo, directors and heads of departments.

  • Nigerians need to seek God’s face

Nigerians need to seek God’s face

SIR: The federal Government needs to declare a national day of prayers and fasting in order to seek God’s face for favour and mercy. Sincere prayers and fasting will change bad things to good and prayers will also influence God to turn the hearts of those in authority from doing evil. The national prayer and fasting would connect Nigeria and her people to the power of God.

Our leaders should be warned that unfaithfulness and corruption will continue to make people frustrated and the more frustrated the people are, the more problems should be expected.

Our leaders in every sphere of governance should read the handwriting on the wall and repent, hence, they should be expecting more problems for the nation. Proverbs 15: 27 says, “He who is greedy for gain, troubles his own house, but, he who hates bribe will live”. Also, Proverbs 14: 34 says “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”

Therefore, let our leaders repent from their wickedness, selfish ways, so that, God can hear our prayers. When a country is well governed, there will be peace, prosperity and progress throughout the nation.

    Akpabio: let’s draw near God

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has urged Nigerians to draw closer to God as they start another journey of their sojourn on earth, adding that this is the only way they would succeed and achieve their objective this year.

He said this in his New Year message.

Said Akpabio: “As we end 2012, let us count our blessings and thank God for everything. Let us pray for the best in 2013 and draw closer to our creator because this is the only way we can receive his blessings, protection and provision in the New Year as individuals, state and a nation.

“As a people and state, we have moved from the fringes of national life to the centre of national attention. We have run a good race in terms of infrastructural development, human capacity building, economic growth and educational advancement and health care services.”

The governor thanked Akwa Ibom indigenes for the lovely sentiments they expressed during his 50th birthday celebration.

He said: “We set out to change Akwa Ibom State, but it looks like we are changing Nigeria. The tidal wave of development we have unleashed on our state has caught the imagination of the nation. Our state has become the destination of choice for conferences in Nigeria and the Gilgal of our nation.”

  • Of private jets and men of God

Of private jets and men of God

SIR: Let the truth be told, there is absolutely nothing wrong in acquiring a mere means of transportation like aircraft that will enhance the productivity of divine assignment of men of God. The plain truth is that these aircraft are not acquired for pleasure as insinuated by uninformed minds but primarily to enhance performance of these ministers.

Take for instance, the Redeemed Christian Church of God presently in over 130 nations of the world; Living Faith Church and Word of Life Bible Church also have branches in many nations of the world.

The schedule of General overseers of these ministries cannot be handled by public or commercial airlines. Most airlines in Nigeria service several airports. So one can see that there is an urgent and inescapable need for airplanes by these ministries. It is complete fallacy and reasoning borne out of sheer ignorance to insinuate that the men in charge of these ministries are enriching themselves at the expense of the members of their congregations.

As a matter of fact, to the best of my knowledge, these amazing men are living sacrificial lives to better the lots of members of their congregation and humanity in general, through provision of hospital and basic needs of lives, scholarship to indigent students, community development projects like road construction, repairs, boreholes, entrepreneurial skill acquisition, donation of school buildings to public schools, donation of food and clothing materials and so on.

David Oyedepo Foundation for instance has been giving scholarships to countless indigent young men and ladies up to university level across the length and breadth of this nation. Let us face the facts and let nobody distort the truth, these ministries are not part of the problem of this nation, they are rather the solution to most of her problems. Consequently therefore, the argument of Mr. Femi Falana, SAN published in Thisday November 30, that resources used in buying these jets could have been made available to poor members of the church is uncalled for. These men do not need counseling on how to minister to the poor, it is what they teach, live and do almost everyday.

Is it not “busybody” to be speaking on behalf of members of these ministries that have best of brains in the world that their general overseers are exploiting and cheating them? Not one member of these ministries have expressed displeasure about this development of acquiring airplane for the work of the ministry.

Let those critics of ministers of the gospel watch it. They may be treading a dangerous path without knowing it. If not for the intercessory prayers of these amazing ministers of the gospel Nigeria will not be standing as a nation today.

Furthermore, let them also make proper investigation about the stories behind the glory of these ministries before rushing to express their views in the public, otherwise an unenlightened mind may be misled to mistake agents of genuine national transformation as cheats.

Finally, we should not become soulish and technical in our minds and start neglecting to appreciate the roles spiritual watchmen are playing in our quest for national development and nation building.

  • In God we trust

Many people think they can no longer be rich. Some think they cannot recover what they have lost. While some have lost hope of getting married, bearing Children of their own, gaining promotion and getting healed. However, one undisputable fact is that from the Bible days till date nobody that reposed confidence in God Almighty has been disappointed. So it is crystal clear that with God, there is hope. All your aspirations are embedded in God from whom all things are possible.

Paul the Apostle told the Philippians that attended to his welfare that God has an abundant treasure in glory and will repay them. Phil 4: 19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” This Scripture is for you also. God of al expectation has assured that He will supply all your need today. Is there anything that you are hoping that God will do for you? I want to assure you, He will not disappoint you. Are you sick, He will heal you. Are you poor, He will prosper you. Are you barren, rejoice for your time of visitation has come. You will conceive and bear your own Children. Are you looking for salvation, it is already granted to you.

Phil 4: 13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” .Brethren you can do all things. With God all things are possible. He is the hope of the hopeless. No matter what your need is, He will grant answer to it.

John 11: 28 –35, 41-44 says, “And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 ¶ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept”

“ 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go”.

Wherever God arrives all things become possible. He is the Master. Wherever or whenever He arrives the blind will see, the deaf will hear, the cripple will walk etc. Today He has arrive in your situation and if you believe it, you shall experience the goodness of God.

Mt 11: 4- 5 says, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them”.

    THE REASON AND EXAMPLE

The reason is that with Him all things are possible. It does not matter how long you have hoped or who is behind the delay of your hope, what is sure is that He has all power to change situation. Power to give Children, job, promote, heal the sick, make the lame walk, the blind to see, deaf and dumb to speak and hear, and above all provide for the needy, defend the defenceless, preserve, etc. Whatever you are going through today God will address it in Jesus name.

He healed all that came to Him and He never changes. What He did in the Bible days, so shall He even do today in your life who is reading this.

    OUR RESPOND AND BENEFIT

Having knowledge that our God can do all things, we should therefore trust Him to do all things for us. Don’t give up hope no matter what you are going through believe that God will give you hope. He will do it. Don’t give up hope.

Mt 11; 28 says, ”Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” God is inviting you to bring your entire problem.  Lu 14:23 says, “And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled”. So come your children are ready, your hope is ready etc. Come and be blessed.
