  • So help them, God

It was a good piece of news to hear that northern governors have made up their minds to abolish the almajiri system as well as street begging, two of the critical aspects of Nigeria’s northern region requiring urgent attention. The person who made this known was Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum (NGF), Simon Lalong. Lalong, the Plateau State governor, said the forum was working towards abolishing begging and almajiri practice in the north, as well as ensure that each child benefited from formal education.  The governor said he and his colleagues had resolved not to tolerate any form of begging again from children who were supposed to be in school. He spoke in Jos, the state capital, while bidding farewell to the 1,195 intending pilgrims of the state origin, who were leaving for Saudi Arabia to perform hajj.

Perhaps this is one of the most salutary ideas from the northern part of the country in recent times. Many people have agreed that there is something wrong with the way the almajiri system was being run and that, this, coupled with street begging, had remained one of the most daunting challenges facing the northern region. Unfortunately, not many have agreed on the way out of the mess. Not a few northerners, particularly the elite, had tried to draw a line between almajiri as a socio-cultural phenomenon, and street begging. They had tried to romanticise almajiri as an acceptable Islamic practice.

The good news these days, however, is that some other people are now coming out from the region to say that almajiri, by whatever colouration, has become antediluvian and is high time it was reformed. So, basically, what is the almajiri system? Arif Kasim Bala, a lawyer of note describes the concept thus: “In traffic everyday around major towns in northern Nigeria, you see boys with plastic bowls begging. When I was much younger, I used to mistake these children for orphans but they are not. They are students of Islamic boarding schools, known as almajiri, People send their children from all over northern Nigeria to get Islamic education from respected Islamic teachers known as Mallams. This practice is common in many West African countries and goes as far as Gambia and Senegal. Some children come from as far as Chad, Niger and Sudan to learn at the feet of some Mallams in Nigeria. These children are as young as four or five years of age.”

But the truth, of course, now, is that the line between almajiri and street begging is blurred. Whilst almajiri might have worked perfectly many years ago, when population was relatively manageable and the economy was booming, it has now become anachronistic. The demography has since changed. For example, it has been widely reported that there are about 10 million out-of-school children in the northern part of the country alone. We need no one to tell us that these are potential bombs that may explode at any time.

But no one should be under the illusion that abolishing the almajiri system would be an easy matter. Something that has gone on for ages cannot be decreed out of existence overnight. It requires systematic planning and collaboration among all the critical stakeholders that have come to recognise the issue as the socio-economic malaise that it is. I have said it on this platform several times; that a child that one did not train (educate) will eventually end up selling cheaply the house that one struggled to build. This is because he would lack the capacity to know what to do with such vital investment. So, he would end up selling it at a give-away price and still see the peanuts he collected as proceeds as commensurate with what he sold just because he did not have the capacity to properly assess the property.

But, to adequately address the almajiri problem, we need to understand the psyche of those reaping from the system. A friend once told the story of what a northern elite said when they were travelling somewhere around the north a few years ago. My friend said he was alarmed by the sheer number of children he saw on the streets at a time when their age mates in other parts of the country were in school; apparently it was in the morning hours. He said the reply of his friend from the north stunned him. You want to know? I’ll tell you. Wait for it! He said who would cater to the needs of his own children if every child went to school!

This answer might have been a Freudian slip, but that was his response to the question of why those children were not in school. And it was instructive. Many northern elite might scream at this response today, but that is the simple truth about this almajiri phenomenon. Those of the northern elite who are truthful to themselves know this for a notorious fact, even if they are not willing to so admit publicly. Many of them send their children to some of the best schools around the world even after studying Qur’anic education, to study some of the best courses one can think of, but these foreign schools are not good for the children of the talakawa (the masses). Rather, they should be satisfied with the limited Qur’anic education they acquire, which cannot take them anywhere, not to talk of take them home.

This is the cause of the huge army of illiterate and ignorant children in the region who are now a pain in the neck for the rest of the society. The truth of the matter is that the almajiri practice has become a source of embarrassment even to the name of Islam. The ignorance, fuelled by the prevalent illiteracy in the region is a drag on national development because no country with such a high illiteracy rate can make progress, with education as the bedrock of national development. It is this same illiteracy and ignorance that fuel the prevalence of vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) in the region.

This is one strong point why the northern governors who appear to be feeling the negative effects of this huge army of illiterates now should be supported by all patriotic Nigerians. I only hope their threat to do something meaningful about the issue is not political rhetoric; I hope they would carry out the threat. But this is a matter requiring the cooperation of all the stakeholders, including the Federal Government that has also made known its intention to intervene in the matter. They do not have to work at cross-purposes. They should rather work collectively to end one of the major eye sores afflicting the northern region.

Schools have to be built and well equipped to enable the pupils and students learn in a conducive atmosphere. The school feeding should be intensified and made to speak to the diverse needs of the different people in the country.  In the same manner, there should be massive enlightenment on family planning. Parents must be ready to give birth to only the children that they can cater for. There is no point giving birth to children only to dump them on the streets or on some other people who cannot take care of themselves. We need to redirect the minds of the idle youths from the streets to the schools. As the saying goes, “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop”. So many idle hands are lurking around, and for as long as they remain in that condition, the rest of us should not think we can sleep with our two eyes closed. That is already evident in the level of insecurity in the country.

  • Wike dedicates victory to God, slain Rivers people

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike yesterday dedicated his victory to the people of the state.

Fighting back tears, the governor said that he was overwhelmed by the support and love they displayed during and after the general elections.

Governor Wike also dedicated the victory to God.

Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt after he was declared duly re-elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ), Wike expressed gratitude to the people for standing by the ruling Peoples Democartic Party (PDP) despite  the actions of enemies of democracy.

He said:  “I want to thank the people of Rivers State for showing the kind of love we have never seen before.  I thank them for showing the kind of support we have never seen before.”

He thanked PDP members “for their show of courage, despite intimidation by security operatives who illegally wanted to change the will of Rivers people.

“Those who died not because they were criminals, but because they wanted to defend their votes. We dedicate this victory to God those who were killed.

“They protected our votes and they defended us. We pray God to grant their families the strength to bear the losses. We shall continue to support the families”, he said.

He said that he will run an inclusive government, which will accommodate all shades of interest.

Wike said: “We have no other state. You may have mansions elsewhere, but there is no place like home. We must come together and build our state.

“We must make the state move forward. We must not continue to de-market the state. I cannot stay beyond 2023, but Rivers State will continue to be. If you believe you are from Rivers State, end this now.”

The governor extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents, saying that nobody won or lost, but Rivers people won.

He said the struggle to stop collation was so vicious that it continued till the end of the collation, stating: “We will not disappoint the PDP. We will not disappoint Rivers people.  We shall continue to serve.

“If anybody does anything contrary as a member of the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, the blood of those who died will visit them. I will never betray PDP.”

Governor Wike thanked INEC for working in line with the tenets of the electoral act. He thanked the Police, but berated the F-SARS.

Former vice president and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Imo State governor-elect, Emeka Ihedioha, Adamawa State governor-elect, Ahmadu Fintiri, and the party’s National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, congratulated Wike. They prayed God to strengthen him and also lauded Rivers people for standing firm and insisting  on the right thing being done.

  • 2019: God our refuge and strength

In September 2018, the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) held its Standing Committee Conference in Minna Niger State with the theme “GOD OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH”.

No topic could be more appropriate for focus at this hazardous time in Nigeria when the Christian comunity, especially our brothers and sisters in the northern part of our country face realties and threat of persecution, violent attacks and extermination.

There is no pretext about this as we witness and read everyday how the blood of the innocents is shed daily and tears and sorrows envelop communities and families of victims. Not only that, thousands of infant and school children are daily orphaned and forced to helplessly watch their promising dreams evaporate and gaze at a bleak future, eking their daily bread from dustbins!

Even those at Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps are no better off as Boko Haram terrorists are regularly raiding, looting their domains and wreaking havoc on their means of livelihood. In the same breath, their social welfare is nothing to talk about as money allocated for their upkeep is allegedly being mismanaged.

Against these pitiful and horrific tales, the choice of the theme of the bi-yearly Conference in Minna, was therefore premised on the need to seek God’s face in recognition that all human efforts had failed to solve the quagmire.

The Primate Of All Nigeria and Archbishop Metropolitan, The Most Revd Nicholas Okoh, set the tone for the conference by speaking to the theme with comforting assurance of God’s love and protection to the bereaved, homeless, widows, widowers and orphans.

Primate Okoh pointed out that the world had known great evils in the past, considering the magnitude of evil unleashed upon it by the first and Second World Wars and national, regional and international conflicts with crises across the globe which had also found their way unto the shores of Nigeria, in form of the vicious and deadly Boko Haram insurgency.

Side  by side the rampaging terrorists and suicide bombers  are also the menace of money ritual killings, invasion and burning of churches, mass murder of worshipers and predominantly Christian communities by land grabbers and power mongers by some armed gangs and youths especially in the Northern part of the country.

The Primate describes this gruesome trend as sad, unfortunate, alarming and reprehensible. He said: “The nation is being surrounded by unrelenting enemy where innocent people are being gunned down and butchered.

“Bomb manufacturing factories are being discovered. The Boko Haram terrorists have unrepentantly sworn to destroy Nigeria, unless their interests and that of their sponsors prevail.”

Describing these times as troubling, Primate Okoh asked: “Would God help her? Has He helped in the past? Can we rely on His Faithfulness?”

The Primate was affirmative in his Episcopal response, stressing the Lord has always intervened timely to rescue the nation and restore peace “following past powerful interventions in our national affairs, one can say God is a Nigerian.”

Primate Okoh admonished political gladiators and the nation not to despair but to embrace peace and faith in the Lord as demonstrated by renowned Civil and Liberty Rights crusader Rev Martin Luther’s who on hearing depressing and gloomy reports, summoned the faithful brethren around him and exhorted: “Come let us sing (or read) 46 Psalm?” and thus challenged God ‘the mighty one in battle to arise and let His enemies scatter’ saying “This is the time such prayer should continue to be repeated by all.”

The Minna meeting rounded off with an intercessory prayer by delegates and participants comprising the houses of Bishop, priest and Laity for urgent Divine intervention in the affairs of Nigeria and for immediate end to the merciless killings and persecution of Christians and innocent Nigerians by the Boko Haram terrorists.

  • Nigeria in 2019

CERTAIN things happened in 2018 which even the seers did not foresee. We do not blame them though because a man can only see as far as God allows him. It is only what God reveals to man that he can see. If God does not reveal it, forget it, no matter how gifted a prophet may be, he will see nothing.

Nothing buttresses this submission better than the story of the  Shunammite woman and his son in the Bible. She got the boy after a long wait on the Lord following the intercession of Prophet Elisha. Then, the boy died. The mother virtually ran amok. How will I lose my child which I bore after years of barrenness? She wondered and sought out the man of God for solution.

When Elisha saw her afar off, he ordered his servant to meet her and ask her if all was well. “It is well”, she said, to every question she was asked. When she poured her heart out to Elisha, he knew immediately that something was amiss. As his servant tried to shoo away the woman, who had by then, fallen at his feet, Elisha said candidly: “Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me”.

None of our prophets saw the February 19, 2018 abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls, some four years after the kidnap of the Chibok schoolgirls. If anyone had predicted that another set of schoolgirls would be kidnapped in such manner after the 2014 Chibok incident many of us would have labelled such a person a fake prophet.

Leah Sharibu, this paper’s Person of the Year for 2018, daily reminds us of the Dapchi saga, which we should have put behind us by now, if she had been released along with her mates who were let go on March 21. She is still being detained because she held on to her faith. Leah refused to renounce Christianity not because she hates freedom, but because she loves Christ with all her soul. May God touch the hearts of her captors and let her go in 2019.

Two thousand and nineteen is a year of great expectations for us as a nation. It is an election year and the parties and their candidates have been selling their programmes to the people. The candidates are as many as the parties. The electoral umpire has told us that 79 candidates would contest the election. Of the lot, two stand out and they are President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

We can liken what is unravelling right before our eyes to what has since evolved in the United States (US) which presidential system of government we adopted. In the US, there are many parties, but you hardly hear about them. Before, during and after elections, the world only gets to hear about the Republican (the Grand Old Party, GOP) and the Democratic Party. These parties have dominated the scene for ages. Nigeria seems to be heading that way. The other candidates have been doing all they can to shift attention from Buhari and Atiku, but they seem not to be succeeding.

Everywhere you turn, talks centre on these two. Will Nigerians return Buhari or will they vote Atiku in 2019? Those in support of Buhari point at his integrity, the attribute which got him into power in 2015, and his ongoing war against corruption which some say is selective. Indeed, Buhari is a good man, but having been in power for over three years now, the question is how has he fared? Many voters may not look at his integrity but at his achievements in deciding whether to return him or not.

As for Atiku, hmmmmm! He has been tarred by the corruption brush. Even his number one supporter today and former boss Chief Olusegun Obasanjo did not see anything good in him until now. But it took a split with President Buhari for former President Obasanjo to see the good in Atiku. Is it not too late in the day for that? If Atiku is that good why didn’t he back the former number two citizen to succeed him in 2007? Isn’t it this same Atiku that Obasanjo accused of selling public enterprises to himself under the guise of privatisation in his book ‘’My Watch’’? What happened to his claim that Atiku’s source of wealth is suspicious.

But fortunately for Atiku, the government says there is no evidence to nail him. How lucky can a much vilified man be. Despite he and Buhari not being the most outstanding of all the candidates, the focus continues to be on them because of the strength of their parties, which will never give their tickets to any of the other contestants no matter what, except the unthinkable happens.

For the Lagos State governorship election, it is going to be Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (BOS) of the APC all the way. Jimi Agbaje of the PDP does not stand a chance against him. Agbaje has said he is running because his party could not get a younger candidate. Can that be true? So, of all the youngsters in the party, none is good enough to be governor? That’s hard to believe. What this shows is that Agbaje is a reluctant candidate; he is not ready for the arduous task of managing the burgeoning Smart City.

Our economy is still a source of worry. With the price of oil tumbling, the government has to buckle up to ensure that it gets money from other sources for the provision of infrastructure. The 2019 budget is hinged on a $60 per barrel of oil benchmark. In the past few months, we have seen the price shoot up to $80 per barrel and from that height fall to its current $53.82, which is lower than the budget benchmark. If it continues on the downward trend, implementing the budget may be a huge problem. Will oil price go up again?

Yes, it will, but we should not continue to rely on a commodity which topsy-turvy nature can derail any well laid plan. No matter how good our budget may be on paper, as long as we do not have control over the price of oil, which is our major revenue earner, we will continue to hold our breath whenever the price crashes. When the price goes up, let’s be wise and save for the rainy day and not behave like the prodigal son. In the meantime, let us pursue the diversification of our economy with vigour.

Better days lie ahead. But let us pray that we do not start 2019 with a workers’ strike over minimum wage. Happy New Year in advance.

  • ‘God will answer citizens’ prayers’

GOD will answer Nigerians’ prayers in 2019, General Overseer of God’s People Worldwide Ministry Apostle Ehijiele Unuanyan has said.

Apostle Unuanyan, who spoke at the end of Christmas service at the church’s headquarter at Illeh-Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State, said God told him that He will surprise the citizens by answering their prayers.

The cleric, who urged Christians not to give up hope on their expectations for 2018, assured that God would bless them in the remaining days of the year.

He said the electorates should be prepared to elect leaders that would better their lots in the forthcoming general elections.

“God told me very clearly that  year 2019 is a year He will answer the prayers of Nigerians. That Nigerians are crying. Nigerians are in desperate need of His intervention. They are finding it difficult to believe He can actually answer their prayers. That He is going to answer.

“God is going to surprise Nigeria by answering the prayers of Nigerians in 2019.”

  • God will not allow any other party in Lagos except APC – Oba Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Akiolu 1, has said that God will not allow any other party to take over governance in the state in the forthcoming general elections apart from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oba Akiolu stated this in his remark yesterday at the 11th Annual Hijrah Lecture and inauguration of the new House of Assembly Mosque at the Assembly complex yesterday.

The new mosque, he said, is unique especially as it is built inside the Assembly complex where bills are passed into laws.

The Oba also pointed out that it is not enough to build mosque but that the custodians of the mosque should be properly taken care of.

He also advised the custodians not to do or be involved in anything that would tarnish the image of the religion.

Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, commended the congregation for donating fund for the rebuilding of the mosque.

He described a mosque as a holy place to worship Allah and supplicate to Him, adding that the custodians should do everything to ensure that it serves the purpose for which it was built.

Special guest of honour was Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who was represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr. AbdulHakeem Abdulateef, who is the Chief Imam of the House of Assembly Mosque, while the chairman of the occasion was Oba of Lagos & permanent chairman, Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, HRM Alaiyeluwa Oba Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu 1.

In his speech, the chairman of the Muslim community of the Assembly, Hon. Sikiru Osinowo, thanked God Almighty for the completion of the mosque.

“We started the mosque project so that we could fulfil the purpose of our coming here. We have seen Muslim speakers, and God made it possible for us to build the new mosque during the time of the current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa,” he said.

Two clerics delivered lecture on the theme and title of the lecture, ‘The place of the mosque in human civilisation’.

The first guest lecturer was the Director, Islamic Affairs, Nigeria Air Force Base, Ikeja, Lagos State, Wing Commander Abdullahi Hassan Inuwa, and second lecturer was Shaykh Abdur Rasheed Mayaleke, chairman, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Ogun State.

Mayaleke describes a mosque as the “first house God provided for man. It is a place of learning, meeting, judgment, worship, a place where we meet on how to defeat our enemies.”

And that praying in the mosques for men is more acceptable than to pray at home, and that all Muslims must be given an opportunity to pray in the mosque.

  • Osinbajo tasks youths on scripture reading, better life promotion

Wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, has called on young people to imbibe reading of scriptures, to learn proper ways of ensuring better future for themselves.

Mrs Osinbajo made the call at the closing ceremony of the maiden National Old Testament contest in Abuja.

The contest, organised by the Israeli Embassy in collaboration with the Christians United for Israel (CUFI), started from September to November.

She said that the call had become imperative to encourage young people to gain requisite knowledge to become self-reliant through their knowledge of the scriptures.

“I am delighted that visits to Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Red Sea, have exposed many people to study the scriptures.

“Imagine all the students have been exposed to the peace that is found within the word, the knowledge, wisdom and understanding that is found in the verses.

“I pray for all that as you study the scriptures you will indeed arise, that all the glory, all the blessings, all the goodness that is found in the word of God will come to light in your life.

“If we know better, we can do better, now I know that through this context we can do better, arise, and shine according to the word of God.”

She, however, read Isaiah Chapter 59, verse 20-21 and chapter 60 verse 1, from the Bible to admonish the participants to always read the scripture, to understand culture of Israel.

Mr Nadav Goren, Charge de Affairs, Embassy of Israel in Nigeria, said that the Bible contest was initiated to be eye-opening towards the desire for knowledge about God among Nigerians.

He described the Bible quiz initiative as a testament to the bridges of kinship and the shared values between Israel and Nigeria.

He explained that this year’s edition of the competition marked 70 years celebration of Israel’s independence and 60 years since the first Bible contest was held in Israel.

According to him, the theme of this year’s competition, “living peacefully in the promised land”, is to promote relevance of peace and reconciliation as reflected throughout the Bible.

“As knowledge of this competition spreads near and far through the nation, let the message of tolerance sound.”

Rev. Samson Ozovehe, the Executive Secretary of Christians United for Israel Prayer Outreach, a faith-based organisation, said that the competition began with 1,800 people nationwide.

According to him, the number is the total of people of those who took the contest in the first stage being conducted via the internet in September.

“Seventy-four top scorers competed in the second stage across the six geo-political zones of the country in October, while 12 finalists competed in the grand finale today to produce three winners,” Ozovehe said.

Miss Nkechinyere Chidi-Mbah from Abia emerged winner of the competition.

While Master Lukeman Lawal from Lagos and Master Odiba Stephen from Katsina took second and third respectively.

Other finalists include Masters Samuel Jibion from Adamawa, Jakannde Josiah from Borno, Jacob Daodu from Lagos and Chibuike Daniel from Imo.

Also, Bate Barde from Jigawa, Joel Ngozi from Nasarawa, Emmanuel Nzubechukwu from Cross River and Ayegba Oyare Akwa Ibom.

The high point of the event was the presentation of awards of all expenses paid trip to Israel tickets to the three winners by the Israeli envoy.

  • Place God at the centre of your home (3)

Dear Reader, it is my pleasure to welcome you to another encounter with  God’s Word today! Without any doubt, I know that you have really taken time to put God first in all your ways to set the pace for your blessings this month. So far, I have examined the truth that God’s help is all you need and last week, I taught you on God’s requirement for living. This week, my focus will be on some vital steps your family needs to take to enjoy God’s help.

Christ must be allowed to be a living presence in your home and not just an inscription or painting. There is a popular inscription in a lot of families (especially Christian homes) which says, “Christ is the Head of this home, the Unseen Guest at every meal, the Silent Listener to every conversation.” Are you in need of peace in your home?  Make Christ, the Prince of Peace the head of your home. How do you do that?

Get your family saved! This is the first step to take in securing peace in your home. In other words, you must take a definite and practical step to be born again and to get your family members saved. The Word of God says, Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).

Salvation is not in Church attendance. It is one thing to be a member of a particular church and it is another thing to be born again. You may have a family church and bear a Christian name. These do not make you a born-again Christian. Someone explained it like this: “Going to poultry on a daily basis does not make a man a chicken.” It will take undergoing a supernatural change for a man to become a chicken. Why then do some people think that going to church daily and even sleeping in church from morning till night make them Christians.  It will take a supernatural change or operation for a sinner to be born again and to become a child of God!

Whether you are a member of a Church or an activity group in your local church, the question is, are you born again?  It is only then that Church or service group attendance becomes relevant.  Prior to this, it is just religion.  If you want Christ to be the Head of your family, it comes by being born again, not by being religious. The Word of God says, Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace; thereby good shall come unto thee (Job 22:21).

Your family members might all be born again and serving God in various capacities, but still lack financial peace. Then, here is the secrete! For anyone desirous of a great financial future, you must possess an attitude of giving.

In a home environment where love and harmony are meant to be the foundation stones and bedrock of its existence, Love is never selfish (1 Corinthians 13:5). Therefore, you must have a ‘Giving’ attitude. For God so loved the world that He GAVE. He demonstrated His love for man by taking the initiative and giving us His son (John 3:16). It was in His selfless giving that the world was won. Jesus admonished us “give and it shall be given unto you…” (Luke 6:38). A tight fisted mentality is a sure way to remain dry and in lack. It also kills the atmosphere of love in the home.

    Giving to God

God is a giving God and giving is a god-like attribute. If we claim to be God’s children, we must imitate Him in all things including – giving. Giving to God of your financial harvest (income or finances) is a sure way to ensure your purse doesn’t run dry, especially tithes. Tithing is a good insurance against the devourer and enemy. Those who give to the Lord hardly ever end up worshipping money. Remembering God first before distribution is a way of ‘Putting God first’ above money.

Tithing is important. The Bible says, Bring ye ALL the TITHES into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, I will open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing…I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes (Malachi 3:10). It is meant to be 10 percent of one’s income, earnings or profit. You may say, “We don’t have money at home,” or “I can’t afford to tithe “or “10% is too much to give God.” Can you afford not to tithe? If tithe is too much an amount to spend can you afford the devil’s charges? The Lord says if you tithe, He will “rebuke the devil and stop all his evil plans concerning you.” All those things devouring your income, unnecessary spending, hospital bills, car damage payments and businesses losses need not be your lot in life. However, your responsibility of paying 10% to the Lord holds great blessings for you and your family. As you are obedient to this injunction, your finances at home will experience a turnaround in Jesus’ name.

Giving to the work of God (Kingdom Investments).

Giving to the work of the Lord and His Kingdom on earth is very vital. It is an investment that will eventually pay off great dividends. It also involves giving for Church projects, to God’s servants and the poor (orphans, widows, needy etc.)

God loves the merciful and releases blessings upon them. When you reach out to bless the poor, God ensures that you do not lack. Also giving God’s servants as is recorded in 1 Kings 17-9-16 can make your home never to lack supernatural supply.

When you dispose of your money in the above listed ways, you are serving God with it and it is an evidence of your love for the Lord. As you continue to love and serve the Lord with your finances, He makes sure your home does not lack. The Word of God says, Worship (serve) the Lord your God and His blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you… (Exodus23:25) NIV

You can’t be a giver and lack as a child of God. It is a mystery but supplies will always be available for you. The Word of God says, One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed (Proverbs 11:24-25).

I thank God that in my family there is nothing we can’t easily give unto God; and He has made sure we never lacked because of this. Many years ago, when we had only 1 car (a Mercedes Benz) and God spoke to my husband to sell it and give the money to expand the ministry of some missionaries in the North. We gladly did! Today we are overjoyed to see these same ministries expanding and growing to the glory of God. We also have many more cars entrusted to us by the Lord.

Make your home a generous home and it will prosper. Let your financial purse be a generous one and it will gain even more. A word of caution: To be generous and zealous for the Lord does not mean one should be foolish. You have to be prudent in your giving and spending.

You need to surrender your life to Christ if you are not born again. If you want to be born again, you can say this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

  • Okotie: illusion, delusion and God

The Yoruba of southwest Nigeria have a way not just with their rich language but with words. Many of their words actually represent long string of sentence(s). One example is ‘amunisiwi’. It means he who leads one into speaking unguardedly or he who causes one to speak such ill (of another) in a manner he would never have spoken ordinarily.

Such is the situation Hardball is confronted with right now. After reading a recent interview by Pastor Chris Okotie, chief shepherd of the Household of God Church and presidential candidate of Fresh Democratic Party (FDP), one hung between debunking the clergyman’s claims and the fear of repudiating what may well be a divine injunction.

First who is Pastor Chris Okotie? He burst forth into national limelight almost four decades ago when as an undergraduate law student, he released a hit song. The plucky kid subsequently left his studies, and for a few years practically became the king of pop music in Nigeria of the 80s. He would return to school, complete his studies and when the world thought he would dive full-bodied into the world of music and entertainment which he already ruled, lo he effectuated another drastic twist. He became ‘born again’ and then full time pastor.

It must be a mark of his personal discipline and strong resolve that he never looked back to commercial music regardless that he was a huge success initially. He has been serving in the Lord’s vineyard since 1987 when he founded the Household of God Church International Ministries barely three years after he left university. And he seems to have made a success of it – by every measure.

A few weeks ago, Okotie who is now 60 years old and who has dabbled into politics since 2003 when he started running for presidency of Nigeria now insists God has mandated all the parties to hand him the country to run, otherwise…

Hear him: “I’m asking both parties (PDP and APC) and other political parties not to field their candidates for the 2019 presidential election and allow me to set up and Interim National Government with the mandate to restructure Nigeria and deal with fundamental issues that beset us as a nation in order to prevent a catastrophe…

“It’s a divine mandate from God.”

Some would say Chris Okotie is again at his megalomaniacal best. Some would laugh their heads off; some yet would say the man is eternally deluded. Many times he had claimed God sent him to contest for president and he had flopped woefully.

But just supposing now is the time?
