  • A life for God and community at 90

I was in Fiditi with my wife when Nigeria gained independence. There is no one that witnessed that period then that would not be sad with the situation of things now. Nigeria held a lot of promises then because God has been very good to us as a country. We were rich in almost everything, but we wasted all our benefits. This is why we are not developing as a country.”

“God really loves this country. We should blame ourselves as a people for the sorry state we are today. The church where we spent virtually all our life is not what it used to be. Things have gone bad.”

—- Rev. John Adegoke Okesiji in The Nigerian Tribune, August 19, 2018.

Attaining 90 anywhere, and especially in our clime, is itself a blessing. David pegged the days of our life to 70, or at best, 80, and he regretfully added that anything longer is fraught with struggle and sorrow. It is a depressing prediction from one of God’s beloved children who He made a reference point for future kings of Israel. If, therefore, we have another child of God defy that prediction, not only by attaining 90, but also in good health and physical fitness, we have reason to be appreciative of God’s grace.

We also know, however, that life itself is meaningless unless it is purposeful, and its purpose is for the good that it promotes for God’s creation. This is what we all strive for. When one of us attains the height, we are naturally pleased, and we rejoice. This is the lot of Rev. John Adegoke Okesiji, retired since 1998 as Pastor of Okeelerin Baptist Church in Ogbomosho, which he led for more than 30 years.

Rev Okesiji’s life has been a shining example of Christian fortitude, and God’s grace has been a fitting reward for His faithful servant. He was born without the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. He was 12 years old before he was registered in school. He endured hardship, but he persevered. He was rejected in his first attempt to attend Olivet Baptist High School because he was “too old” for Form 1. As God would have it, he ended up having a full scholarship to the school years later. He received the B. Th degree from Baptist Seminary, Ogbomosho. He served creditably in several churches including Oke-Isokun Baptist Church, Oyo, First Baptist Church, Okeho, Ori-Oke Baptist Church, Ogbomosho, Okeelerin Baptist Church Ogbomosho and others.

The measure of a man and a woman, no matter his or her station in life, is the quality of the value he or she adds to the community, be it local, national, or international. For those who know him, Rev Okesiji’s contribution to the communities of which he has been a part is exemplary. He was a teacher of teachers and a pastor of pastors.

With his loving wife, Mama Sarah’s support, he has set a shining example as a man of God and a worthy son of his community and nation. A respected elder of Okeho, he has participated actively in its development efforts for decades. He served on the committee that researched the history of Okeho and published Iwe Itan Okeho in 1976. A family man of no mean repute, he takes seriously his obligations to God and community.

It is these two parts that cohere in Rev. Okesiji without conflict that makes him a fitting subject for study and the rationale for my comments today. A man of God and a concerned patriot, he, like many of us, finds our present predicament in both spheres quite unsettling.

The two quotations above are from the same interview that Rev. Okesiji gave on his 90th birthday. I only separated them for my purpose. In the first part, we see the frustration of a patriot over the unenviable condition of his country, whose fortunes at independence have been terribly reversed over years of the rule of incompetent and uncaring despots, some of them in democratic grabs. In the second part, we see the exasperation of someone who gave his life to God’s service, one who knows God’s desire for His church, and how that desire has been stymied by human ego and greed. He also witnessed first-hand the sacrifice and suffering of the early converts.

Like a few others of his calling, the man of God agonized over what could have been but is not: “Nigeria held a lot of promises then (at independence) because God has been very good to us as a country”, he observed. “We were rich in almost everything, but we wasted all our benefits. That is why the country is not developing.” But for the greed and selfishness of those who got themselves into power, God’s promise to Nigeria would have been fulfilled. Who, except the human locusts and wicked exploiters, would perceive no need to cry on the state of beloved country!

If you spent a lifetime teaching, preaching, and counseling youths and adults in the fear of God and love of country, if you took seriously your calling and you walk your talk and lived what you preached so that you present yourself as a worthy role model, you would also be disappointed at the turn of events for your nation. Where do we get our ethics? Why are we purportedly so religious but so blatantly immoral? Does the proclamation of faith in God or Allah immune us from God’s judgement against a life of immorality?

Then, of course, there is the more concerning untoward state of the church vis-a-vis its expected role as a bulwark against sin and wickedness in high places. This is the point of the second quotation: “The church where we spent virtually all our life is not what it used to be. Things have gone bad” is Rev. Okesiji’s summary of where the church is in Nigeria today.

Things have gone bad because many of our contemporary church leaders are fake. The early converts suffered for their choice of Christianity. The Late Revd. Paul Ogunyale was Rev. Okesiji’s classmate. At my father’s funeral in 1991, Revd. Ogunyale recalled the frightening experience of early Christians of Okeogun in their communities. Only the grace of God, which endowed them with uncommon courage because he needed them for His purpose, saved them.

Among those first converts was Rev. Moses Okesiji, the father of Rev. Okesiji. Common to all of those first converts across the regions of Nigeria was the conviction that God’s purpose for their salvation was to serve Him in life no matter their situation. And they looked up to their heavenly home where they expected a crown of glory. They took to heart seriously the story of Lazarus and the rich man and how the two ended up, one in eternal bliss, the other in eternal suffering.

Does the faith of our fathers and mothers still motivate our attitude to life? Is the old-time religion still good for us? Surely, we have church buildings in every nook and corner of our major cities and multiples of church buildings in small towns and villages. The same is true of mosques. We have millions of congregants proclaiming belief in God or Allah. Now, however, many church goers, like Pharisees before them, are simply hypocrites.

Now our men of God preach only prosperity in this world. They fake morality while they live in infamy. A viral video of a pastor having sex with a church member in an open field on the mountain where he had lured his victim for prayer shows the depth of our depravity as a people.

We have good reason to believe the man of God’s observation. We are witnesses to the hypocrisy. We know of the sons of Eli in our midst. We are aware of the Daddy Elis who feign ignorance of their sons’ evil deeds against man and God. But we also know what became of Eli and his sons. Above all, however, we also know that we have a God of justice.

Happy Birthday, Papa! Igba odun, odun kan.

  • Draw closer to God, Adeboye charges

Nigerians will experience bloom again as soon as they turn to God, General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has declared.

He spoke at the just-concluded 66th annual convention of the church at the Redemption Camp, Kilometer 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode; his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Emmanuel Udon; Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olanisakin; Wife of the Benue State Governor Eunice Ortom; Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside and Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceutical Limited, Stella Okoli were prominent Nigerians who attended the weeklong event.

Adeboye said Nigeria will blossom, excel, dominate and exceed the expectations of the world in all areas if Nigerians recognise the place of God and turn away from evils.

Speaking at a special fellowship for royal fathers, the respected cleric charged traditional rulers to speak with one voice against the ills in the society.

He said when the unite, they can get politicians to implement policies for societal goods.

He lamented traditional rulers cannot leave their domains without permission of their local government chairmen, declaring such development as absurd.

“I am not a politician, nor am I an activist. I am a pastor but issues like this must be addressed and I am happy the politicians are talking about restructuring and issues like this should be look into so that that the royal fathers will take their rightful position in the scheme of things in Nigeria,” he stressed.

He further charged them: “Please do not submit to forces that want to share your throne with you. God will take care of you.

“You must allow any high Priest to have dominion over your throne or businessmen to dictate how you run your throne.”

His wife, Pastor Foluke, charged Nigeria leaders to exhibit the fear of God so that it may be well with Nigeria.

Leading a 20- minute prayer for the nation, she expressed optimism Nigeria would rise again.

  • God, save us from our friends

I want to assume that all we have heard, read and seen on television about the Abuja aberration is a one-off incident that must never be allowed to happen again in our country.

The siege on the National Assembly in the nation’s capital remains a blight on the image of the Buhari Administration and it gives room for concern as to whether or not the present central government is not gradually drifting towards authoritarianism and intolerance of opposition.

One or two newspapers had written editorial opinions to condemn the siege and I’m almost swayed to think in the same direction.

When it became known that the director-general of the department of state security service, Lawal Dauda ordered the sting operation, I almost had my heart in my mouth, wondering why the Buhari civilian administration would contemplate drawing the ire of the democratic world to itself at this time.

Yes, at this time, when the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is decidedly desperate to return to power and continue to do what it knows how to do best – please don’t ask me what that is, as if you didn’t know! It was an unwise gamble to take, to attempt to muzzle the legislature in what could be described as an attempted coup against democracy. Which was what it really was, if the Federal Government of Buhari could be pinned down to it.

But the prompt intervention of the Vice President who is for now the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and the decisive action to call off the siege mitigated the damage done to the country’s image and our democratic credentials. The condemnation even by the ruling party, the APC, helped in a way to douse the tension created and that, with the acting president’s quick-silver thinking and action, went some way to erase the impression before it had time to form in people’s minds that Buhari, currently holidaying on the UK, knew about the siege and authorised it.

The immediate sack of the security chief by the acting president and his ordered detention, point conclusively to the fact that some enemies within as well as collaborators’ without, were at work to make this federal government look ugly in the eyes of the enlightened world community.

If, as it is being strongly suggested that the siege had the imprint of the Senate President because of his close ties with the DSS chief, then there can be no greater vindication of the First Lady’s rooftop alarm of a cabal within her husband’s presidency that was holding him ‘hostage’.

Bless the Yorubas fertility of mind when they philosophise about the enemies within. “God save me from my friend, the enemy I can take care of” is another interpretation of the Yorubas saying that “ehinkule l’ota wa; inu ile laseni ngbe”.

If the insinuation is correct, I think it is the height of betrayal for an insider and a supposed friend to betray and embarrass his principal this way. And if indeed Saraki is complicit in this, it gives him out as a deadly political operator indeed.

Nothing short of a high-powered probe into the siege will do, to really establish the motive for this scandal of no mean dimension. It is in Buhari’s interest and integrity that the truth of this issue, be unravelled, for our democracy to survive.

  • Pastor donates N1m for completion of Mosque in Calabar

A Senior Pastor with the Peniel Church of God in Calabar, Apostle Essien Ayi, has donated the sum of N1 million to the Muslim Community to facilitate the completion of a central mosque and Islamic Centre in the Cross River State capital.

Ayi, who represents Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar-South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said Nigerians should be their brothers’ keepers, irrespective of religion.

The clergyman and lawmaker, who made the cash donation at Gbogobiri, a Hausa settlement in Calabar, said the gesture was also to appreciate the support he has enjoyed from them.

He said, “Every human being whether Christian or Muslim believes in God, the creator. The religion may be different. The mode of practicing may be different, but it is tilted towards one being, which is God.

“Also the Muslim society has been very supportive of me right from when I was chairman and they informed me that their former mosque had been demolished and they are trying to erect a new and befitting mosque. I feel as a representative, they too are my constituents. I am bound to make a token donation towards the completion of that mosque. We should be be our brothers’ keepers. We are all Nigerians irrespective of our religion.”

Ayi also made donations to two orphanages at Uwanse and Bateba Streets, as well as the Pope John Paul Home for the aged and needy along Target Street.

He said it has been his tradition over the years, to the less privileged in the society and encourage harmonious coexistence.

“Whenever God bless you, use part of that blessing to bless others. I came from a disadvantaged home and by the grace of God he has lifted me to this height. I always have a feeling for the less privileged in the society,” he said.

Head of the Hausa Community, Sarki Lawan, who spoke through the Secretary of the Mosque Committee, Mr Hashimu Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the N1 million donation, which he said would go a long way in the completion of the project.

“We are very happy. We appreciate his concern about coming here to give us his donation. This is the first time it has ever happened. He donated N1 million and we assure him the money would be put to use. The name of the mosque is Central Mosque and Islamic Centre in Calabar.

“Work started about four months ago and the money would help us a great deal. Our message to other politicians is to emulate what he has done so that the people they are representing would feel their impact,” he said.

He called for harmonious inter-religious relations.

“That is all we preach about. We call for a harmonious living environment because if you don’t have a peaceful atmosphere, you cannot even practice your religion. Let us come together. We should not start fighting ourselves and make the environment unconducive for us to stay. If we are in peace everyone can practice their own religion. That is what we believe. Peaceful coexistence is what we need,” he said.

  • Not Buhari’s job to change Nigerians, says Kukah

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, on Friday urged Nigerians to give up unrealistic expectations of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s change agenda.

Kukah said it was not the President’s responsibility to change people’s ethics or attitudes, rather Nigerians would have to do that by themselves.

He delivered the keynote lecture at the launch of the New Narrative for Good Governance newspaper yesterday in Lagos.

The New Narrative, with its headquarters in Lagos, is published by Kalu Okoronkwo, who is also its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), while Mike Nzeagwu is its Editor-in-Chief.

Guests at the event included, former Akwa Ibom Governor and Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, founder/CEO, Centre for Values in Leadership, Prof. Pat Utomi, Chairman Swiss Spirit Danag, Port Harcourt, Daniel Chimezie Okeke (Omereoha) among others.

Kukah said: “In the paper I’m going to present tomorrow, because I’ll be speaking to a Catholic audience. I’m going to ask them the question ‘Are you not ashamed of yourself? That were expecting Buhari to change Nigeria, that we think that Buhari has not changed Nigeria?’

“The question is: How does Buhari change Nigeria? By going into the kitchen and changing our menus? By going into our towns, our communities and changing the way we do business? By going into the banking hall and forcing us to do business in a different way?

“This tendency of outsourcing our responsibilities either to God or to other external agents, what it does to us is that it saves us from the difficulty of thinking about our own complicity.

“I am saying to my Christian audience tomorrow, I should be ashamed of myself if it is to a politician that I am looking for change, because the very essence of my life as a Christian is to – when Jesus tells me I am the light of the world, I am the salt of the earth – so, if this country is in need of redemption, Nigerians say they want a messiah, but I say you cannot have a messiah in Nigeria because the Nigerian messiah has to be recognised. The Muslim will not recognise the Christian messiah and the Christian will not recognise the Muslim messiah.”

He urged Nigerians to not be carried away by the euphoria surrounding June 12 without finding a solution to the underlying problem of nation-building.

Kukah said: “Now we are in the excitement of June 12. Suddenly we are now for Abiola or against Abiola, for June 12 or against June 12.

“Meanwhile the deeper issues remain unresolved and they concern the content, structure of the system that we are running. We are refusing to deal with the question: How are nations formed? How do nations grow?

He described Nigeria’s ethnic diversity as “a great asset, not a problem”, adding, “Contrary to what our people say and contrary to what has become popular, diversity is an asset. The critical question is, how do we manage the diversity?”

Akpabio, the chairman of the occasion, who was represented by Dr Kachi Onanuju, said the launch was “very apt. We are at a place in our country where we have never been before in 104 years.

“New Narrative will be an instrument that will aid our country.”

He urged Nigerians to “put your hands together in building a new country. God has put us all in this country. We must find a way to go on this journey together.”

  • David Mark renews pact with God at 70

•Danjuma, Saraki, Tambuwal, others showers encomium

FORMER Senate President David Mark at the weekend took stock of his 70 years sojourn on earth.

He used the event to renew his covenant with God to serve Him and humanity faithfully.

The former Senate President, who spoke before a crowded gathering in Abuja, said: “I have resolved to serve God and humanity ceaselessly for the rest of my life.

“I will intensify my prayers and do the work of mercy for peace and unity of Nigeria, where genuine friendship and brotherhood, devoid of parochialism reigns.

“When I was growing up, I made friends across board devoid of ethnicity, tribe or religion.  And we saw ourselves as brothers and sisters with a common destiny. But what we see today is a celebration of ethnic or religious champions in our national life.

“This is not the Nigeria of our dream. We must rise up to re-orientate our people in order to reverse the trend for good. We must see ourselves as one people with a common destiny and purpose.”

He expressed optimism that a better Nigeria, where everyone is free to live and pursue his or her legitimate ambition in any part of the country without fear of intimidation or molestation, is possible “if we see ourselves as brothers and sisters ”

President Muhammadu Buhari, who spoke through his Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, described Mark as a brave soldier and astute politician who has made positive impact in the country’s growth.

Senate President Bukola Saraki showered encomiums on his predecessor for the foundation he laid in the Senate as well as his contributions to national growth.

He requested Mark to always make his knowledge and wealth of experience available for upcoming leaders to profit from.

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal described Mark as a patriotic and relentless public servant, who  over the years demonstrated unquestionable loyalty to his fatherland.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Uche Secondus hailed Mark for his steadfastness, noting that in the wake of the gale of defection that hit the party after its defeat in 2015, the former Senate President stood firm, when he said he would remain in PDP, no matter the odds.

Mark’s classmate, General Alwali Kazir, who spoke on behalf of Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Course 3 Alumni association, commended Mark for his relentless and unblemished service to the nation.

Chairman of the occasion General T. Y. Danjuma noted Mark’s indomitable spirit, which he said is needed to navigate through the country’s murky political water.

Eminent Nigerians, including four former Senate Presidents, Iyorchia Ayu, Adolf Wabara,  Anyim Pius Anyim,  Ken Nnamani, the incumbent Saraki, governors, past and present members of the National Assembly,  Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Cardinal John Onaiyekan,  captains of industry among others attended the event.

  • 2019: God will reshuffle Nigeria at all levels, says cleric

A cleric, Ezekiel Acha, has assured of God’s determination to cause major upsets in the nation ahead of the 2019 general elections.

God, he claimed, has promised to reshuffle the nation’s political scene from the presidency to the local governments during the elections.

The Abia-based prophet, who spoke while briefing newsmen, said God directed him specifically to come to Abuja and deliver the message to the entire nation.

He said since killings, destruction and starvation are everywhere in the country, God is moved to take actions based on the blood of the innocent crying before Him day and night.

Acha said: “I, the Almighty God will never, ever allow what happened in 1966, about 52 years ago to repeat itself anymore.

“For a long time I kept silent. I did not answer my people but now the time to answer them has come

“The sky is loaded with blood vapour and blood is flowing all over Nigeria.

“Yet some group of people are still killing millions and more souls, why? It is because the law is weak and useless and justices never done.

“It is time to give my people good leaders come 2019. Those who will show them love, peace, unity, kindness and also bring justice to all levels and no more rulers anymore.”

He added: “Therefore any fortunate person that found him or herself in any of these important positions come 2019 and goes contrary will die instantly, I the sovereign Lord and the Almighty has spoken

“I, the Almighty God will shake this nation called Nigeria, over throw their kingdoms and destroy all their occult powers.

“I will also remove and destroy all the cankerworms and reshuffle from the presidency to local government authorities.

“I will destroy the groups and individuals responsible for the cry of my people hoping that nobody sees them.”

  • God will destroy oppressors of Nigeria, says cleric

God will destroy oppressors of Nigeria, says cleric

There is no hiding place for oppressors of the nation because God will destroy them all, General Overseer of The Saint’s Gospel Church of Christ (also known as Hand of Fire Ministries), Pastor Jacob Shodeinde, has declared.

Renewing hope in Nigerians with the message that judgment of God was imminent on those disturbing the peace of the country, the cleric said that God as the defender of the defenceless will rise for the people.

Shodeinde spoke during the annual celebration of his call into the vineyard of God at the church auditorium in Ikotun-Igando Lagos.

According to him, the Lord will destroy the powers oppressing the country and making life meaningless for its people.

Recalling how his journey began, the cleric said he was studying engineering overseas when God called him into full-time ministry.

Though he initially declined, he said the fear of dying if he refused to heed the call forced him to abandon his studies and return home.

He said: “I was studying in England but the Lord called me to return to Nigeria to pray for its deliverance.

“I was reluctant at first, but God said if I failed to heed, I would die. Everything the Lord revealed to me was also revealed to Sister Olaniran for confirmation and when I met her, she prophesied everything the Lord had shown me.

“And since I returned, there have been signs and wonders. I have not regretted the call since I answered it. And when I hear testimonies of what God has done in the life of the people, I cannot but appreciate Him the more.”

On why he is hardly in the media, he said: “I don’t believe in unnecessary publicity because only God can publicise the ministry.

“It is His work and He alone knows what to do to make it big.  I don’t celebrate birthdays but I am celebrating my call because the Lord instructed me to always celebrate this call and many other celebrations, like the Feast of Passover, like Moses did in the Bible.

“I also don’t ask for financial help because I don’t believe in forcing people to give money.

“Since I am also not sure of the source of their income, I trust only God to keep His business afloat.

“And I must tell you that God has been more than faithful to that pact. He gave me Isaiah 55 verse 1 at the inception of the call and He has never failed.”

The cleric reiterated that prayer remains the only weapon the people can use to conquer the many challenges bedevilling the country.

“The only solution is prayer and nothing else. The Lord said he will destroy the oppressors.

“I was called because of Nigeria and I will continue to pray for the good of Nigeria so I won’t be guilty,” he added.

  • CAN urges Nigerians to return to God, restore losses

CAN urges Nigerians to return to God, restore losses

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President Rev. Samson Ayokunle has urged Nigerians to return to God in repentance with a view to heal the Land and restore all losses in the past years.

Rev. Ayokunle made the appeal in a statement signed by the CAN Head of Media, Pastor Bayo Oladeji yesterday in Abuja.

“As we begin a New Year together, I congratulate every Nigerian, both the leaders and the led, on being among the living who entered this New Year.

“As we enter into this New Year, it’s natural to reflect over the previous year and consider gains and losses.

“In spite of the economic recession, our God did not allow depression to consume us all. We feel with those innocents who met their untimely death within the year as a result of Communities, farms, Churches and Mosques attacks.”

The CAN president urged politicians to avoid hate and inciting speeches to maintain the unity, peace and tranquility enjoyed by citizens.

He called on every eligible voter to register for the voters card, adding that it would empower them to elect the right people.

“If you are involved, you get the leader you demand and if you failed to be involved, you get the leader you deserved.

“My appeal to the security agencies is to be dedicated and loyal to the nation in their duties. Let there be rooms for gainful employment for our youths roaming the streets.

“They have what it takes to stop the needless bloodletting in the country. Let there be peace and unity. The three tiers of government should strive hard to make the much-awaited dividends of democracy available to the people.”

He noted that Nigeria would be a better country if only both the government and the governed upheld justice and the fear of God.

Rev. Ayokunle prayed for God to direct the leaders to get it right in every facet of life and wished the country peace and unity in 2018.

  • THEME: THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD (22)

    Sub-Theme: The Breastplate of Righteousness

The second armour of God is the breastplate of righteousness. After Jesus the Truth sets one free from the bondage of sin and the kingdom of darkness, He fills such with the Spirit of Truth who empowers one to live as a true child of God. To be victorious in the battles of life one needs to live righteous. Hence, righteousness is a shield in warfare. It is God’s armour given to His children to be able to stand strong in all battles.

Your righteousness is a protection against all evils. Note that it is impossible to live this righteous life without faith in Christ Jesus, for He makes us righteous and empowers us to live righteous. This is the reason the first armour is the strong belt of Truth, the Truth being Jesus Christ whom we must first believe in, in order to obtain this full protection against all evil forces, rulers of darkness of this age and spiritual hosts of wickedness.

Satan strikes and defeats an unrighteous person because such has no protection/shield from God; protection from ungodly means surely fails. Satan uses all sorts of tricks, strategies, and schemes to get someone to live continually in disobedience to God’s word, so he will have free access to the person’s life for chaos and destruction, this we must be sensitive to guard against. Again, only in Christ Jesus is our victory sure, as we willingly follow in His teachings.

The man Job is a good example of God’s unfailing protection over the righteous. At the time, the Lord asked Satan, “Satan, from where do you come?” Satan answered, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

When Satan says this, know that he does not just go to and fro the earth doing nothing, he is on an aggressive mission to destroy. The scripture admonishes us, saying, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him…” Satan roams about all the earth looking for victims, people he will destroy.

He is a thief whose mission is to steal, kill, and destroy using all kinds of tricks to accomplish his goals; his chief aim is to disaffection one towards God and godliness, making such an easy prey for him. We have to resist him and to do this we need to put on the Full Armour of God.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” Satan answered, scoffing “does Job fear God for nothing?” “Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?”

“You have blessed the works of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land…” From Satan’s statement it is clear that he had tried several times to hurt Job but all his efforts continually failed, this made him very frustrated; he tried to hurt his household but he could not, he tried to destroy his possessions he could not, he tried to attack other areas of Job’s life, still he could not, why?

This is because God had built a hedge round about Job, his household and all that he had, so Satan could not hurt him in any way. Hmm, this is what God does for the righteous; He builds a hedge round about them and all that concerns them, making it impossible for Satan to break through. Note also that the righteous is blessed with earthly riches.

If there is one thing a person should desire in life, it should be to live righteous, for such gets God’s attention just like Job, nothing happens to such without God’s knowledge and approval. God’s ever-abiding presence is with the righteous, they never need to fear any evil. Therefore, the weapon over evil is righteousness. Job understood this truth; he knew righteousness is his weapon against Satan’s attack and righteousness makes him acceptable before God.

We are not to fight back our enemies with physical/carnal weapons, Jesus taught saying, “you have heard that it was said, ‘you shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. That you may be sons of your Father in heaven…” When you are the son of your Father in heaven then you definitely have His protection. As you give your life to Jesus Christ, He gives you the Holy Spirit who helps and empowers you for righteous living that is acceptable before God.

I have had all sorts of hurtful false accusations laid against me, but I found out that I did not have the stamina to defend myself, unlike my old nature who never lets go, who would argue, quarrel, and use all aggressive means of self-defence to prove my innocence even in the simplest of matters. Thank God, for delivering me from such a lifestyle of strife, it drains one’s energy, it is time consuming, and one will live in constant bitterness, hatred, unforgiveness, and be revengeful. This is Satan’s trick to defocus, demoralize, and defeat a believer. God wants us to forgive genuinely and let go of all hurts, the word of God says that I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I that live but Christ lives in me. More things that are hurtful will be said and done to you but you need to keep forgiving and keep loving just as Jesus did, this is being broken and it the believers armour against evil attacks. It is very possible to live this way if you so desire, as you walk with God He gives the needed grace.

Jesus rightly said that those who follow Him shall not walk in darkness. As we submit to His shepherd/sheep relationship, we will not hear the voice of the hireling but only hear and obey the voice of the good shepherd. In Him alone lies our victory. When you hear God and do as He instructs you in total obedience then you are righteous and He will protect you, and grant you victory in battles.

Put on the breastplate of righteousness!
