  • The Strong Belt of Truth (5)

“…have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” A sin exposed is a sin defeated; do not hide sin. The unfruitful works of darkness are adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outburst of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, etc.- these works belong to the kingdom of darkness, with Satan as the head of this kingdom.

There is another kingdom, which is the kingdom of God; it’s also of Light. Being evident by these lifestyles: Love (for God and neighbour), joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Those who live thus belong to this kingdom and are the children of God.

Where one belongs is known by the kind of life one lives. Someone’s lifestyle tells it all. Hmm, the Good News remain that God has made a way of escape for all of us; in that He sent His dear Son Jesus Christ to die, in order to deliver you and me from the kingdom of darkness and its unfruitful works and be converted; be born into the kingdom of God.

God says, And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with ALL your heart”. If you will sincerely call on Jesus to set you free from the kingdom of darkness and its unfruitful works, He will. The kingdom of darkness is doomed forever, it’s a place of everlasting torment in hell fire, God does not want anyone to be there- please escape for your life. Know that only those who believe and accept Jesus as their Lord and saviour will inherit the kingdom of God; a place of everlasting life in heaven.

Jesus said, “…you shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free, he who the SON sets free is free indeed! This is so reassuring, satisfying, and complete. Knowing it was God Himself who planned it all, that those who believe and accept the salvation/deliverance His son JESUS offered will be FREE from the bondage of sin. They will remain free as they follow Him.

The people of Old had to offer animal sacrifices again and again for their sins to be forgiven, yet they continued to struggle in their sins and continued sinning. That never stopped them from living in sin. God sent Jesus to lay down His life once and for all to end the animal sacrifices and set you free, giving you and me complete victory over sin. He gave us the Holy Spirit to help us, to give us the power and divine assistance we need to live righteous, obeying Him always. Do not keep enjoying sin; do not hide your sin- CRY OUT TO JESUS WITH ALL YOUR HEART TO SET YOU FREE FROM YOUR SIN.

I was once in the kingdom of darkness. I did not fully understand the significance of the death of Jesus; I only had head knowledge of the story and believed it my own way. The full knowledge of my sin, its guilt, and consequences changed all of that, for I continually cried out to Jesus in my sin to set me free, I trusted Him completely for my deliverance, and He delivered me. I had an encounter with Him that forever changed my life. Now I can boldly say ‘there is power in the blood of Jesus’ because…He touched me and made me whole. Now I am in the kingdom of God, I belong to the family of God. I was blind but now I see, I was dead but now I live!

                   SONG:        AT CALVARY

    1.       Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died
    On Calvary.

    Chorus:     Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
    Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty,
    At Calvary.

    2.       By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
    To Calvary.

    3.       Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus everything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing
    Of Calvary.

    4.       Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
    At Calvary!

    TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-18, Ephesians 5:11, John 8:32, Jeremiah 29:13.

    FROM: FAITH NWACHUKWU

  • God has the final say

It is scripturally affirmed that when one is determined to get to a higher level or be somebody of importance in the society and can compliment same with discipline and diligence, dreams will be achievable. Paul, in his epistle to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 3:6-7 cf Philippians 4:13) however elucidated further on that axiom, that determination, discipline and diligence will only guarantee result if it has the backing of the Almighty God. It therefore does not matter how much of conventional efforts one put into the things of life or the atrociousness of opposition from close or far quarters aimed at eliding God’s purpose for man, life or nation, the Almighty God has the final say, and His will shall superimpose other wills, schemes and desires (Romans 9:15-16; Ecclesiastes 9:11)

Joseph was a man that God loaded with horrendous moral cum spiritual abilities and prepared for the top. Israel in a show of love made him a coat of many colors which became the kickoff for strong antipathy by his brethren. To compound this envy and animosity, Joseph in obvious innocence, shared his dreams with the brethren that hated him (Genesis 37:7,9) which made them desire to truncate divine purpose and consequently sold him into slavery (Genesis 37:25-28). The will and desire of Joseph’s brethren was to annul God’s plan forgetting that the Almighty God has the capacity to disappoint the devices of the crafty so that their hands are forbidden from performing their evil enterprise (Job 5:12). From slavery, God took over, guided his steps and ordered his movement to the place of dream actualization. He was transited from the hands of the Midianites to the house of Potiphar, moved to the prison for an offense he never committed and from there he was catapulted to the highest position in Egypt. Beloved in Christ, it doesn’t matter where you are now and what you are facing, God has the capacity to, and shall, take you from where you are to where He has destined for you, in the name of Jesus.

At what junction are you presently in life? Are people ganging up against you because of your “coat of many colours”? Are you being maligned and destroyed by people that are close to you as a result of your dreams? Has opposition been stirred against you by agents of darkness and kingdom of wickedness? Have you been sold out to a location where they opine that your star will not be manifest? Are you in trouble without having your hand in sin? Have you, even in your innocence, been convicted by powers that are superior to you or you have been consigned to the prison and it looks like all is lost? There is hope for you! The Almighty God has the final say, and not any man. Even if you have been tried in the court of public opinion and found guilty – God has the final say.

When God steps into your life, He suspends opinion polls that have confirmed you as a failure and changes you from a perceived underdog to the favorite (Isaiah 60:15); when He steps in, He changes your story and reverses everything that has been against you. Besides, He will ensure that as people associate themselves against you, they are broken in pieces and as they gird themselves, the anointing of God shall break them into irreplaceable pieces. As they gather to take take counsel against you, their counsel shall come to nought and whatever evil word they have been spoken or speaking against you and God’s plan cum purpose for your life shall be made ineffective (Isaiah 8:9-10). This shall be your portion in the name of Jesus.

What you need to do is come to Jesus, confess your sins to Him, depart from every evil ways, trust in Him with all your heart and don’t lean on your understanding (cf 1 Samuel 2:9). In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear God and depart from evil (Proverbs 3:5-7). God shall frustrate every evil counsel against you and all yours in the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, I commit our affairs unto you, frustrate the counsel of man and let your will alone be done in my life, in Jesus’ name.

  • God not responsible for Nigeria’s woes – Obasanjo

God not responsible for Nigeria’s woes – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that God is not responsible for the problems militating against the development of Nigeria.

Obasanjo who spoke while chairing the 38th Kaduna International Trade Fair Seminar with the theme; ‘Promoting Public Private Partnership as Panacea for Accelerated Growth and Development’ said Nigerians must stop blaming God for the nation’s woes.

He  stated that Nigeria is where it is today is a question of leadership and not God.

According to him, “somebody came to me and said we need to pray to God and I said, for what? He said, so that God can do for us, what we cannot do for ourselves. And I said, no, let us stop troubling God, because God has done all we need for us, we only need to play our own part.

“But, if we must pray to God, our prayer should be that God should not take away all He has given us as a nation.

“God in His mercy has given us all the needed resources, both human and natural, but we have not been able to put them together and manage them effectively. The countries that have developed and are performing better are not better than Nigeria in terms of resources.

“One problem that must be corrected is the problem of leadership. This is because our leaders lack focus, commitment, continuity and sometimes proper knowledge about economic and development issues, hence we have not been able to achieve meaningful result.

“Another problem is that, we take one step forward and another step backward. Nigerian leaders must be tough and ready to bite the bullet, because Nigeria cannot have it easy. Until we get the right leadership, the problem will continue,” he said.

Registering his displeasure over inconsistency in policies, Obasanjo said, “I banned importation of toothpick in 1977, because it was the most stupid thing to import when we can produce it here. But, about 40 years after, one of the Presidents that came after me, I won’t mention his name, unmanned toothpick. Then, I put on my Babanriga and went to Abuja to express my shock about the policy, but to my greatest surprise, the President told me, he signed the document unbanning toothpick without reading it.

“Another thing is that, he came in saying he will generate additional 30,000 megawatts to the 3,500megawatts we left behind, and I told him, don’t trouble yourself, if you can add 3,000 megawatts to the one we left behind, you will receive the of awards. But, to my greatest shock, he couldn’t add one (1) megawatt before leaving office,” Obasanjo narrated.

Speaking on the public-private partnership, the former President emphasised that lack of synergy in public-private sectors is responsible for the set back in the nation’s economy and growth.

He said, “the public sector perceives the private sector as a profit making Industry that reaps where it does not sow, but in actual fact, they are two legs that when brought together can accelerate development in all sectors of the economy, he stressed”.

Obasanjo therefore said that, public and private sectors must work together to accelerate growth and development.

He said, “when we were in office, we privatized NNPC and sold to Dangote and partners, but the government that succeeded me revoked it and that is why till today, NNPC cannot work optimally.

“But, today the same Dangote that was denied ownership of NNPC is building a refinery that can produce in excess of what NNPC can produce and what Nigeria can consume. So, it means he will even export”, Obasanjo said.

Earlier in his lecture, the former Minister of Finance, Malam Shamdudeen Usman said, the reasons Nigeria is facing backwardness in economic growth and development, is the lack of continuity in governance and poor will by political leaders to complete projects started by their predecessor.

According to him, “delay in budgetary approval process and also padding of the budget attributes to the slow acceleration of growth and development experienced in the Nation”.

“Short term policies affected PPP projects across the Country due to inconsistencies in government. Though several governments gave high support to PPP, only President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration recorded about 90% completion of PPP projects and they include the Garki hospital in Abuja, Lagos International airport, Port terminals, amongst others, he explained”.

“However, the Jonathan administration took a huge step in adpoting a 30years National Integrated Infrastructure master plan which targets core infrastructure in the Country, but noting much has been achieved so far”, he stressed.

  • God has been partial to me, says Obasanjo

God has been partial to me, says Obasanjo

•Abacha planned to kill Yar’Adua, Abiola and me

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo reviewed his life yesterday and said God had been “partial” towards him.

Obasanjo due to turn 80 on March 5, said given his narrow escape from death in prison during the late Gen. Sani Abacha  regime after which he became president, attested to God’s extra – ordinary mercy, grace, favour  and partiality towards him.

He spoke during a thanksgiving  service organised in his honour by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State chapter, preparatory to his birthday ceremonies.

The thanksgiving service tagged ‘Celebration of God’s grace at 80, took place at the Treasure House of God, Agbeloba, Abeokuta.

Some of those in attendance are: Ogun State Deputy Governor Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, Chairman, Ogun State Council of Obas the Olu of Ilaro Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Olowu of Owu, Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu, the Osile of Oke – Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade and Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu.

Obasanjo said considering his humble background, he  never knew his name could even be heard in the next village let alone the whole of Nigeria, Africa and globally.

He recalled that during the heady days of Abacha, three persons including him (Obasanjo) were marked for elimination.

The other two, according to him, were late Maj-Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Ardua and the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election and philanthropist, the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola – two of them died detention.

Obasanjo said: “When I came out of Prison and the pressure started mounting for me to contest for the post of President of Nigeria, I was confused for a while, particularly bearing in mind what I had gone through after my service in the military, after my service as Head of State and then I finished up in prison without doing anything wrong.

“People were coming to me again, I say look, how many President do you want to make out of me? You want to send me to jail again? But in that confusion, I decided to seek advice and to listen to the word of God.

“One of the places I went was South Africa. Mandela was still alive and Desmond Tutu. I went first to Mandela. I said Madiba, you know my story and of course he was one of those who stood firmly with me when I was in Prison. I said look, I am getting pressured to become the President, what is your advice? He said, Olu, whatever your instinct tells you to do, follow it.

“I went to Desmond Tutu and I listened to him. We were in his little garden in South Africa and after listening to me, he said yes, my brother, I hear you. What you are telling me is that you are tired of serving God. I said no. I said Desmond, you haven’t heard me correctly.

“I said I have done so many things in the past and so on, and this is what I got out of it. He said but your people are now asking you to continue to be of service to God and to them and you are now saying you are not going to do so.

“He advised me to go and do what my people requested from me. I came back and my confusion was getting a little bit clearer. One day, I just opened my Bible systematically to the book of Esther, the story of Mordecai and Esther. By then, about three people have told me that Abacha assured them that three of us would not come out of prison alive. Myself, Shehu Yar’Adua and MKO Abiola.

“I read that section of the Bible and then I said to myself, maybe the reason why I did not die in Prison was that God has a purpose, when the man who put me in Prison has vowed that I will not come out alive. At that point I changed my mind.

“When I look at my life, and you called this grace, there is nothing else that can described what God has done for me, rather than immeasurable grace. God has been gracious to me and my family and he has used me tremendously as you have heard.

“I thank God and I thank you more importantly and all those who have worked with me. If not for them, whatever I can claimed to achieve could not have been possible. What do I have to say than thank God.”

The preacher at the event, Bishop Wale Oke of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Ibadan, said Obasanjo was a man of destiny whom God destined   for a specific purpose in Nigeria.

He likened Obasanjo’s time and experience to biblical leaders such as Abraham, Joseph, Ezra, Samuel, Esther and Apostle Paul.

He said: “Once in a generation, God raises a leader for a generation. We have such people like Abraham, Joseph, Samuel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther and Apostle Paul.

“They were raised and commissioned for a specific task and they were focused on that task. God has raised Baba Obasanjo to be in this mould,” Oke said.

  • God has been partial to me, says Obasanjo

God has been partial to me, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has taken another critical look at his life, achievements amid daunting challenges and admitted that God has been quite “partial” to him all through.

Obasanjo who would be 80 years old by March 5 said his narrow escape from death in prison during the regime of Late General Sanni Abacha and later becoming an elected President is an indication of God’s extra – ordinary mercy, grace, favour and partiality towards him.

The Ebora of the Owu Kingdom who also declared that he does not deserve all the favour bestowed on him by God, spoke on Sunday at a thanksgiving service organised in his honour by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, preparatory to his 80th birthday.

The thanksgiving service tagged ‘Celebration of God grace at 80, held at the Treasure House of God, Agbeloba, Abeokuta.

The ex – President said considering his humble background in a remote Ibogun Olaogun community and the illiterate parents that gave birth to him, he never knew his name could even be heard in the next village, let alone the whole of Nigeria, Africa and globally.

He recalled that during the heady days of Abacha, three persons including him(Obasanjo)were marked for elimination while in detention, saying by providence, he was the only one that survived the death scheme.

The other two according to him were late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Ardua and the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election and Philanthropist, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola – two of them died prison.

Obasanjo however revealed that when he was being pressured to run for the office of the President upon leaving the prison, he prayed to God, consulted with Dr Nelson Mandela before his death and Arch – Bishop Desmond Tutu before making up his mind to make himself available for the office.

He however, used the occasion to also call on the Egba traditional rulers to work for the greater unity and progress of Egbaland, saying the unity among Obas in Egba fall short of expectation.

    State.

“Let me say most sincerely I thank all of you, and more importantly I thank Almighty God for this day and for what God has done in my life. I used to say and I mean it that God has been so partial to me by giving me so much favour that I do not deserve.

“My Lord spiritual, Kabiyesis, if you don’t know anything at all, you just go and locate the village where I was born. There should be no one born in that village by the parents, who are my parents, stark illiterate, no road to our village where I was born and you should hear his name beyond the next village. So God has done for me, much more than I deserve and I praise God for this.”

  • THEME: THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD (3)

Sub-Theme: The Strong Belt of Truth (3)

Know this: Our weapon of warfare are not carnal but mighty through God for the pulling down of strong holds. Also, know that there are spiritual purposes overriding earthly circumstances, everything that happens on earth has a spiritual dimension to it, the spiritual drives the physical. Therefore, we are not in battle with the physical and should not fight with physical weapons like gun, cutlass, knife, sword, charms, etc. We battle not against flesh and blood; we battle against principalities, against powers, against rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, God says, we need His full spiritual armour to be able to win this battle. The armour of God is not what many people want it to be, but they are truly the armour that give complete victory. I pray the Lord opens our hearts to conceive this revelation, so we can begin to battle with the right armour and by so doing be victors and not victims of the devil.

There are a lot to learn from the story of David and Goliath. Young David fought and defeated the giant Goliath who fights with all kinds of sophisticated armour; he won all battles until he met someone who fights with spiritual armour, then was he defeated.

Goliath was a giant; he was over 9 feet tall, he wore a bronze helmet, a 200 pound coat of mail, bronze leggings, and carried a bronze javelin several inches thick, tipped with a 25 pound iron spear head, and he had his armour bearer who walks ahead of him in battles with a huge shield. While, David had a close fellowship and a strong relationship with God, and certainly a strong faith in the Almighty. With just his shepherd’s stick, sling, and a stone, he fought and defeated the champion Goliath to the amazement of everyone.

Prior to the defeat, David said to Goliath, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Hosts. ‘this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s.” Nothing but David’s strong faith in his God granted him victory over Goliath, not the sling and the stone, he did not depend on physical weapons. He depended on God and trusted Him for victory- oh! That boldness and courage in David strengthen me, they leave me with so much ‘hunger’ for more God. He knew God and had encountered Him personally.

This brings us to the first armour: The Strong belt of Truth.

Jesus said to some Jews who believed in Him, “If you abide in my word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the Truth and the Truth will set you free.”

They were angry with Jesus, so said to Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, “You will be made free?”

Jesus answered them saying, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin, and a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

The Son sets free from the bondage of sin. With sin in one’s life, one is already a victim of Satan; sin puts one in captivity of Satan, so such person needs to be set free from sin. God sent His Son to bring about this freedom. Therefore, Jesus is the Truth; He is the Son who sets free from sin.

Jesus is the very beginning of the full armour of God. He is the Way, the Truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Jesus and He is the only way to freedom from sin and eternal death in hell. He is the only way to righteous living and eternal life in heaven.

Those Jews were slaves to sin, and Jesus saw the need for them to be delivered, but they were not true to themselves. They denied their true state of sinfulness, the need to be set free and refused to believe Jesus. These men were murderers, liars, violent, envious, cheats, hypocritical, etc. Those of them that continued to refuse deliverance from their sins were destroyed. The devil’s utmost desire for everyone is to get people into the bondage of sin and then destroy them, this you should fight against by calling on the saviour Jesus whom God sent to set you free from the bondage and slavery of sin. Satan uses all kinds of tricks, schemes, and strategies to get people continue to be in bondage of sin.

Know that everyone needs Jesus, for we were all born as sinners. Hence, the need to be Born- Again; to have another birth

(A spiritual birth); aside from the physical birth everyone came into this world through. David recognises this fact when he said, “…I was born a sinner-Yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.” The people, who lived before God sent Jesus, desired this spiritual rebirth but they did not have it, they struggled to please God by obeying the law but they could not fully obey it. We are so blessed to have this new life through Jesus. The new birth is by choice but it is the will of God for all. God provided the WAY to pleasing Him, which is by faith in Jesus Christ who lives the new life of righteousness through those who believe, accept and follow Him.

Jesus the Truth came to set you free from your sin. One who commits sin is a slave to sin, being under the devil’s captivity. Fight for your freedom, you have been given all it takes to be free- call on Jesus and Follow Him.

If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed!”

  • Day Obio/Akpor APC rededicates party to God

The gathering of members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the 17 wards in  Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State was to rededicate the party to God.

The event, which was held at the premises Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Port Harcourt, started with exhortation of the name of God. There was also praise and worship session. Party members danced round the open field to celebrate God.

Political chieftains across the 23 local government areas, including the APC chairman in the state, also attended the thanksgiving service.

The General Overseer, Adullam Praise Embassy, Pastor Oyewole Ayo,  in a short sermon, said the only way APC members in Obio/Akpor can move on is to forgive one another and forget about the past. The man of God said if the party continues to look back it would be very difficult for them to forge ahead.

Pastor Ayo, who prayed for the leaders in the 17 wards in Obio/Akpor, said for the party to win any future election in the area they must be under God. “Members of this party must learn to obey God and to obey your party leaders. Your leader cannot be speaking or thinking for an issue and the followers are reasoning differently. Then, they party will not move forward. You must strategize, be united with one voice then leave the rest to God. But you cannot move forward when you cannot forgive one another.”

A chieftain of the party, Dr. Gift Worlu, who delivered a lecture at the event, asked party members to forgive him in anyway he had wrong them.

He said APC is God-fearing party and challenged the party to rise above where they are at the moment. He said they must be ready to play the role of opposition and forget the bitterness of yesterday especially among themselves.

Worluh said: “We must learn from the failure, at the last election we cannot say we totally failed because we won at the national level. That’s alone should encourage us to move ahead and play the role of an opposition party. We must also reflect on those things that made us to fail because failure is not final, so that we can learn from it.  People say both APC and PDP are the same that means it is time to exhibit character that will describe us differently from PDP. Nigerian must see the difference in us.”

The leader of APC in the area, Chief Tony Okocha,  who called for the observation of one- minute silence for the death of APC ward leader,  alleged that  the government committed sacrilege in politicising their cultural norms and values as well as desecrating traditional institution with the dethronement of Royal fathers who are not supportive of his policies.

Okocha  who took over from Governor Nyesom Wike as Chief of Staff, Government House, in the second term of former Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi also accused PDP led government in the state of recording high rate of kidnapping and hostage taking in the state especially in Obio/Akpor area.

He called on the APC members to always pray and support Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

“ We are solidly behind our leader, the performing Minster of Transportation, Rt. Hon.  Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. APC in Obio/Akpor is united as a family and gives her total support, loyalty and followership to him. We therefore appeal to the party at the state to support us in our quest to battle the abnormality meted on our members in Obio/Akpor and beyond.

“Please let our party at the local government enjoy its pride of place at the state. Our utmost desire is for the leadership to support us as we strive to translate our challenges to victory in 2019. We have 460 registered voters in Obio/Akpor. We wish to extend our gratitude to the President Muhammadu Buhari, we appreciate his fatherly support for Rivers State. We see in the President the qualities of a true friend, one who never forgets his friends.”

  • Cleric preaches closeness to God as mosque clocks 10

Cleric preaches closeness to God as mosque clocks 10

A Muslim cleric, Sheikh Mustapha Yusuf Temidire, has urged the citizenry to turn to God in prayer for divine intervention over the challenges facing the country.

Quoting the Quran, the cleric said through supplications, God “shall be our guardian to the right path. He will surely ease our hardship”.

He spoke in a special sermon at the 10th year anniversary of Jama’at of Temidire Salam International Central Mosque, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Sheikh Temidire, who urged Nigerians to respect their leaders irrespective of the hardship they were facing, said: “Allah made us understand in the Holy Quran that He created all His creatures for a purpose and also among His creations he choose whom he pleases to be in high position such as the president, leader of a community, commissioner and others (Suratul Qasas V 68).

“As the situation of Nigeria is that everyone is feeling hardship, the only way out of the problem, according to the Quran, is to run back to Almighty Allah, pray to him and he shall be our guardian to the right path. He will surely ease our hardship. During the lifetime of Prophet Shuiab (peace be upon him) in Modyan city, he advised his people then not to backbite and avoid all evil such as killing, embezzling and others this can be seen in (Suratul Aaraf V 73)

“Therefore, the only way out of the problems in Nigeria today is prayer as we all know that “prayer is the master key.”

He counselled leaders that they occupied positions of trust and they would be accountable to God.

The cleric said: “However, whoever Almighty Allah Has appointed the leader or the head of a state should execute his or her leadership as it is laid in the Holy Quran.

“According to the Quran ‘surely Allah commands you to make over trust to their owners and that when you judge between people, you judge with justice, surely Allah admonishes you with his excellence. Allah is all seeing and Hearing (Suratul Nisai V 58)’.

“This noble verse of the holy Quran makes us to know that for you to be a leader, you have to be trustworthy, dependable, loyal and faithful to your people, and these has to begin with your family and neighbourhoods and the justice that is well welcomed by Almighty Allah. And this is what we can see with the administration of our president and his subordinates. They are firm with Allah’s commandments…”).

He explained that the mosque has been offering special prayers to God to ease the hardship facing the citizenry.

According to him, the mosque was founded on November 1, 2006, “on the basic tenets of Islam that must be observed as can be found in the holy Quran in Suratul Baqarah verse 177, which states and I quote ‘it is not righteousness that you turn your face east or west but to believe in Allah, the last day, the angels, the book and the messengers”.

Its members, the cleric said, also spent part of their wealth out of love for God on not only their families, “but on the orphans, the travellers and the beggars”.

In obedient to God, he said, his members “are steadfast in prayers and give Zakat, fulfil all contractual obligations, are firm and patient under any circumstances and God-fearing’.

“This is Islam code of conduct, which must be observed before ever practising the five daily prayers to qualify to be called a Muslim.  This is our guiding principle in this society called Temidire Salam International Central Mosque and that is what is lacking in our society today. We Nigerians are neither our brother’s keeper nor God-fearing, including our so called leaders.

“We do not limit ourselves to just preaching and propagating the cause of Islam, we award scholarships to indigent students and those that excel in our Annual Quran competitions to cover both their western and Islam education, irrespective of whether they are our members or not and whether they attend private or public schools or class,”  Sheikh Temidire said.

  • THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD: Introduction

We are in very dangerous times; perilous times indeed. A time of great Lawlessness, sin is continually on the increase, and people’s love for God is growing cold. Sin is fast becoming a way of life, it is being accepted and forced to be accepted as right. The divide between good and evil is gradually being erased.
We are in a generation that says all is well when all is not well.
    – A generation that believes one can’t write examination without expo (exam malpractice). A young girl was put in a special centre (unknown to her) to write her Jamb exam. Special centres are arranged for candidates who pay to be ‘helped’ to pass their exam. She wrote the exam without ‘expo’ knowing it is wrong to do so. The invigilator who was monitoring her, refused to collect her script when she was done, insisting she must use the expo like everyone else, he forced her to collect the expo free of charge and sent her back to her seat to use it. The poor girl, out of fear that her paper may be ceased, collected it, but didn’t use it. Wrong is being forced down on people to be accepted as right.
    – A generation that wants you to accept the LGBT (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual) acts as legally right and acceptable by everyone and all nations, hence forcing their ways on people and advertising themselves as being successful and happy- living in much self-deceit.
    – A generation that continually reject God’s way, choosing to go their own way.
    – A time when the rich is being honoured and celebrated- how the riches came is inconsequential; celebrating the wrong people.
    – False prophets and false teachers among religious groups have risen to deceive people. During a birthday party with some youths and children, the master of ceremony (MC) called for people who know the celebrant to come talk about her…a youth I never met came out and said things about me, adding that I led him to Christ personally. I didn’t remember leading him to Christ, so I went up to ask him when that happened and how, only to realise he was lying. I told him it was wrong to do so but he said I shouldn’t bother about it- I was really pained that someone could be ‘joking’ in the name of God. I told the crowd he was lying and that I didn’t know him – the intention wasn’t to embarrass him but to teach him it was very wrong to do so; lying in the name of JESUS!. This is the generation we are in and the kind of young people being raised. I kept wondering how he came about that, then it ministered to me, that a lot of ministries and churches hire people like that to testify lies about their ministry just to get crowd and members- what a deceitful world.
    – Some religious groups teach doctrines that raise violent members, inciting especially youths to hate, kill and destroy their fellow human beings they cannot create, thinking they are offering service to God.
Jesus already said these things would be so in the last days; He said “…many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved”

Apostle Paul also exhorted Timothy about perilous times and perilous lifestyles, he said – “…But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”.(2 Tim 3:1-7).
You will agree with me that this is where we are right now in Nigeria and the world in general.

All the tricks and strategies of Satan are targeted at you and me to get us live as stated above making our love for God to grow cold. There is battle and this battle has to be won. To win this battle the word of God enjoins us thus: “…Put on all of God’s armour so that you will be able to stand safe against all strategies and tricks of Satan. For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies—the evil rulers of the unseen world, those mighty satanic beings and great evil princes of darkness who rule this world; and against huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world. So use every piece of God’s armour to resist the enemy whenever he attacks, and when it is all over, you will still be standing up”.

Armour is a protective covering, a shield used as defence in battle.

Satan moves back and forth all the earth seeking for souls to destroy, destinies to be wasted, so we need to resist Satan. We are in battle on earth and our weapon of warfare is THE FULL ARMOUR OF GOD.
We shall be discussing each of the armour in subsequent editions.

I’ll REMARRY if God wishes —66-yr-old Bishop Bola Odeleke

Last year, Bishop Bola Odeleke, the first African female Bishop and widow of Late Brigadier-General Lasun Odeleke, floated an online radio station in Lagos. But rather than making her more relaxed and fulfilled, it seems it has even increased her workload. Why? That’s because the famed Agbara Olorun Kibaati preacher, probably may have chewed more than she bargained for. According to her, “Tomorrow I will be in Badagry. I have churches all over the world, and I travel from time to time to oversee them. More so, I am an evangelist and a revivalist. Being a bishop is just for administration of the church, I am a core evangelist. I travel a lot to places to preach. In April I will be in Edo State. I am booked from now till July.” Bishop Bola Odeleke, who just arrived from a Christian ministry tour of six American states, in this interview, shared with PAUL UKPABIO, memories of her recent US trip, the success of her online radio abroad and her lifestyle as a travelling bishop, mother and grandmother.

YOU are the General Overseer of Power Pentecostal Church. Early last year, as a bishop, you set up the first online radio station, how is it doing?

We are doing well; surprisingly, it picked fast. It’s alive in over 60 countries of the world. People phone in to participate in different programmes on air. In fact when I was in America, I granted about three interviews, one from Finland, and another from Amsterdam and then the last one from New York. So Kibaati Online Radio has come to stay. We are planning the next line of action; that is to have a community radio station here. That hopefully will take place in the next one year.

What kind of response have you been receiving so far and what’s your programming content like?

I preach online. For response, I can say people love the preaching I do online. We have different Yoruba programmes where people call in. The man from Finland, for instance, he said he heard the preaching and it was refreshing since he had not heard his language, Yoruba, spoken for a very long time. We have a legal person who talks about people’s rights, another programme where health is discussed and so on. The online radio I can tell you is moving fast.

You used to be a tele-evangelist but seems like you stopped, what happened?

For now, I am not into television preaching. Yes, I was into it, but it is too limiting. They tell us don’t preach this; don’t say that. They also told us not to talk about miracles and so on. Since then I lost interest in circular radio and television. So right now, we are fully online. But you know I was the first woman to preach on television in this part of the world. But right now, I need to look at other areas. But God willing, in future, I hope to have a television station. But I know for that, we will need a lot of sponsorship.

How did the label, Agbara Olorun Kibaati, come about?

It means ‘the power of God that never fails’. Kibaati is ‘never fails’. It was about 1981-82 when I was at Christ Apostolic Church in Yaba area of Lagos that the Lord gave me that word! The Lord said that He wanted to give me a programme, a programme that will be like a market. So I asked: what will people be buying and what will they be selling? And God said people will be selling their sorrows and sicknesses to Satan, and that, they will be buying in return, good health and prosperity. He eventually gave me the name Kibaati. And truly, sooner than I thought, I commenced a crusade there, which became very popular. People came from everywhere, and I know many will still remember Agbara Olorun Kibaati. It was that programme that gave me the fame because of the miracles. It was indeed a big market.

However, that wasn’t my church. I was just there doing crusade everyday in the morning and in the evening. I was in that church for three years, after which the Lord gave me this present place we are. Here also, God has been moving in miraculous ways. So, that is how I got that name Agbara Kibaati. Though people also know me as Bishop Odeleke, but I know a lot of people who also know me with Agbara Olorun Kibaati (laughs). That is also a name God gave me when I was a ‘Nobody.’ I am presently building a mall and when it’s ready, it will also be called, Agbara Kibaati Mall.

You are mostly always in the church here attending to your members, doing one programme after another, do you go out at all?

(Laughs) I am not always here like that. Tomorrow, I will be in Badagry, I have churches all over the world, and I travel from time to time to oversee them. Moreso, I am an evangelist and a revivalist. Being a bishop is just for administration of the church, I am a core evangelist. I travel a lot to places to preach. In April, I will be in Edo State. I am booked till July. That is why there are pastors here for administration for everything. This is the headquarters of the church but our church in Ibadan is even bigger than the one here in Lagos.

But recently you were in America, was that a holiday?

Holiday? There is nothing like that for now. I don’t rest. I pray that one day I will be able to go on holiday. Yes, I was in America late last year, but I was there to preach. I preached in six states, and I did 22 sermons in total. I was in Baltimore, Washington, New Carolina, New York, Chicago and other places.

So what is your impression of USA? The white man brought Christianity to Africa, are they now as religious as we are?

It is true that they brought Christianity to us, but I guess it is our turn to take it back to them. It is their grandparents that brought it to us, not the present generation. And you know, Nigerians can preach, when we open the scriptures to them over there, they look at us with astonishment. This new generation of Americans has no time for God, they have everything. I bought a phone card of $40 over there and I used it endlessly. Over here, we pay for every little comfort that we can get. And phone is not even a luxury but we pay heavily for recharge cards. They have things easy for them there, their government care for people and property. And because they have a government that cares about them, sometimes they then feel they do not need God, until cancer, earthquake, all manner of sicknesses wake them up, and then they remember that there is God. But in Nigeria, everyday you need God to intervene in your matter. Here we seek God every day; we search God everywhere in the scriptures to find Him so that He can solve our problems, which are many.

We hear that your church is having a fasting period presently, how long will you be fasting for?

We will be fasting for 21 days; we do this every year. Fasting is important and I have written books on fasting. It is not the fasting however that works, it is our mind. The African mind is too hard, so we need something to soften it down. That is why fasting is important. When you are fasting, you are calmer and it helps you to remember to read the scriptures and pray. When you are not fasting, it is likely you will have an excuse not to pray, but if you are fasting, you will pray because you won’t want the fasting to be in vain. Fasting is to humble us. In the churches in America now, they fast. The Christian ministers over there fast; they have started seeing the importance of fasting. And they have embraced everything concerning deliverance.

As a nation, do you think that prayers can solve our problems?

They will. I was on a television programme recently and I said the same thing. Prayers can solve our problems. If we move closer to God, He will solve our problems. Our leaders’ minds are twisted as it is right now. People in circular leadership are selfish; it’s all about their family and themselves. They are not thinking about the common man on the road. It is even a little bit better in Lagos but when you go outside Lagos, the leaders are too selfish and corrupt. They are not mindful of the common citizens because they are not close to them. That is why prayers come in. We have to pray that God touches their minds. We are praying that our leaders will hear our language; they need to hear us. We need to have a common ground. Their children are overseas, the common man’s children are in the villages; the common man is entering buses and they are entering aeroplane; no common ground. So we will pray and speak to their minds that God, who is the owner of their minds, will go and touch them.

Now, we have many female bishops and female ministers of God unlike when you were the only female bishop around, are you happy with the growth?

I am happy we are coming up, women ministry has come to stay and the women are getting bolder. I was talking to somebody who called in from the US last night on marriage. She told me she will get married but she does not want a regular husband. So I wondered what that means and I asked her. She told me that she is not a regular woman, so she cannot be a regular wife. She said that a regular Nigerian husband wants his wife to cook for him three meals a day, and expects his wife not to think of any other thing except him. She said she is a leader, that she has a vision to run a big company and she is already on it. She is already big and still wants to be bigger. So how is she going to be thinking of a husband who wants to be served three square meals every day?

I then replied, urged her to get married anyway and have children. She asked me if it is important, and I answered that it is important. She said she will just want to have one child and not marry. So that is the mindset of these younger women, and that is because of what women have gone through in the hands of men. They no longer trust men. Men have not allowed their women to grow. Only a few give their wives opportunity to grow.

But what has your case been?

When I started ministry, I was growing it in my husband’s house. He (my husband) who rose from a 2nd Lieutenant to become a General. There was an understanding, which I use to teach women now, an understanding between the couple. You tell your husband in transparency that this is what the Lord is asking you to do. This is how much I have to start it; you already have what you are doing as my husband, so let us get one or two house helps to assist us at home. So, I advise them to however shine their eyes at home because if they are not available, their husbands will take the next flight and before you know it, he is gone. So plan your life in such a way that you run your company, find time to be at home, and as the owner of your company, you have time to sit at home do what you have to do at home, before going to work. I am happy that we have more women bishops now.

USA has just missed having a female president at this time. Do you think Nigeria will get a female president in near future?

By the grace of God, very soon; 2019 is almost here, we are warming up. We are looking forward to it; we are raising a woman to contest.

Really, and what would a woman do differently?

A woman carries a child for nine months, delivers the child, nurture the child, and when the father carries the baby and play with him or her for a few minutes and go, it is this woman that will stay with the child till the child grows. Even when the husband has problems, he runs to the wife. So we can use the same caring mentality to care for our country. Nigeria has suffered in the hands of men for too long. We have tried a young man as leader of this country, we praise the Lord for that. We have tried a soldier, again, we praise the Lord. Now, we have tried an old man who is even a retired soldier. Again it is praise the Lord that we are getting. So the person we need is somebody that has compassion. The men have passion but they do not have compassion. And that is what we are missing now.

We can see that our present president is fighting corruption, that is good; he is also trying to save money, that is good. But they are collecting money from corrupt people, what are they going to do with the money? It has happened in the past and such money we did not see. So we are asking the president, what are you going to do with the recovered money? Unfortunately, our president is an elderly man; he doesn’t want to offend people too much. He is being careful. But a woman, with the compassion she has, will not hide such secret, she will name all the looters and tell everybody what the money can do. If a woman can build a man, then she can build a nation. We are praying, fasting and grooming somebody to come up in 2019.

In this last administration, we noticed that some women were also involved in large scale corruption, so is there any difference between a male leader and a female leader?

I know that you will ask me that, but let me tell you, people like such women are the bad eggs. That, however, gave us something to think about. So we gathered and asked our proposed candidate, are you going to go there and steal money like that? And she has assured us that she will not. We have told her that she should go there and be a mother for the nation, no mother will destroy her child. Even the women that have been seen to be corrupt must have been urged on by the men. It must have been the men that have told them there is money there, take it, nothing will happen. So this particular woman, we have drilled her and groomed her to be a mother to the nation.

Who is this woman you are grooming?

She is Mrs Helen Godswill. I will not reveal more than that.

Do you see Nigerians voting for a woman in the next dispensation?

I believe they will because Nigerians are tired of all that has happened and is happening now.

Nigerian politics is also about money, big money. So where is the financial muscle for this person that the women are grooming going to come from?

That is why we need a change. Our support is from the Lord. When God supports you, people will support you even without taking money from you. If God wants you, people will come to you and tell you that, they are supporting you because of God. It’s true, the money is in the hands of men but men have put us through so much trouble in this nation. We need a woman to bring that compassion into the affairs of the country. We must have a good change. The woman we are grooming is not the type that

will get to the presidency and use a whole year to look for manifestos. The woman we are grooming will not get there and use six months to search for ministers. This one already has done her research for the past 12 years, she has gone around Nigeria and if you ask her what is wrong with any state in Nigeria, she will tell you and tell you the solution.

Do you advise for young women who are in the ministry and are aspiring to become bishops like you?

They should remain focused, follow the tenets of the bible, all knowledge is there. Do not compare yourself to another, do not want to be like another, be bold and share your dreams with your husband so you can have an amicable understanding of where both of you are going. And remember, there are so many lions out there that will try to stop you.

    How about your children?

I thank God I have seven children; they are good, some of them are in the ministry. Even the ones that are working outside the church have something that they are doing in the ministry. I have 14 grandchildren and there is another one on the way to make 15. So I am a grand mom and still counting, that is, I am still expecting.

What is life like for you as a grand mom?

Life for me is beautiful. When my grand children come around me, I am usually pleased and happy. They love to play with me. They sit and sometimes run around me asking questions and I usually respond. It is a beautiful life.

You are looking youthful, what are you doing to maintain good health and beauty?

(Laughs) I am not as youthful as you may think; I am 66 going on to 67 later in the year. Thank you for the compliment that I am looking youthful. I really thank God for all that He has done in my life. Indeed, it has been a life dedicated to His calling, a life of obeying the Lord and Master.

Does that also mean that you are through with marriage?

Oh, I am a child of God. I am totally in His hands. I have no plan. God has the entire plan for me. So here I am, with no plans, but what He says I should do, I will do. If He says I should marry tomorrow morning, I will gladly do it. What God decides will be okay for me (laughs).

Has your fashion sense changed over the years? What would you say is your fashion sense now?

I started out as a boutique owner. I was selling fashion and fashion accessories before God called me into the ministry in 1974. So, I know what fashion is and I like looking good for myself. I wear clothes that look good on me.

How about fashion accessories? Do you have any that you cannot do without?

I can do without anything. Nothing is too important than God to me. Nothing is more important than preaching the gospel. It is when I am preaching that I am happy. If I am not wearing any fashion accessories, I will still go out there and preach the gospel. Beauty is in the mind, if my mind tells me I am beautiful, then I am beautiful.

Being someone who knows fashion, do you have up to 200 shoes?

(Laughs) I can even have 1,000 pairs of shoes. That doesn’t mean anything to me. So the kind of person I am is the person who accepts what God gives, if God gives me 1,000 shoes, I will take it, but if He doesn’t, I won’t think or worry about it. However, the relationship that I have with God is such that anything I need, God provides. He is my great provider, and it has always been like that.

What difference do you want to see in Nigeria?

I want to see a praying people, thinking and producing goods and services. We should also look inward; other countries want our intellect but let’s use it for ourselves. Let us go back to what we were doing and get it right, the East had palm oil, the West had Cocoa, the North had groundnut, let us search and develop our natural resources.
