Adeboye to Christians: serve God in spirit, in truth

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, yesterday urged Christians to serve God in spirit and in truth if they truly want to experience the blessings of God in 2017.

He spoke at the 2017 Annual Lagos State Thanksgiving Service held at the Lagos House in Ikeja.

He drew his text from Exodus 3:1-8, Genesis 18:1-8 and Mark 10:46-52 among others and admonished Nigerians to leave the camp of the devil and embrace God’s camp.

The service featured music ministrations, bible readings and prayers for the nation, for Lagos State as well as for every citizen of the state.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode urged residents to pray for the prosperity of the state.

Ambode described this year’s thanksgiving as significant because it will usher in activities for the 50th anniversary of the creation of Lagos State. The state was created in May 1967.

Ambode said: “We are thanking God and showing supplication for allowing us to witness the Golden Jubilee Anniversary together.

“It is also an occasion, irrespective of our religion, to reaffirm our faith in Him and our belief in His grace, to make our hopes and aspirations for this New Year.

Ambode recalled that at last year’s thanksgiving service, prayers were offered for the state to grow in spite of the bleak economic outlook predicted in many quarters.

“We believe that as we are gathered this evening to praise Him and glorify His Holy name, new doors and windows of opportunities shall be opened for us as individuals, as a state and as a nation.

“We want to officially welcome all other states and governors to the Year 2017. We join hands together as Lagosians to wish Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari, who once worshipped here with us, Happy New Year, and pray that God will honour him as he leads the ship of the nation to its rightful destination.”

Among those who graced the event were former military administrator, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Senator Olamilekan Solomon, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, traditional rulers and religious leaders.

  • When did God become man?

    When did God become man?

Not many expected the sort of headline that arrested the front pages of the newspapers on Sunday. Pastor Enoch Adeboye retires. He seemed, for many, eternal on that holy couch. Every household has become accustomed to the even keel of his voice, his equable temperament, his resonance as a raconteur, his unruffled visage, his “let somebody shout hallelujah”…

For lay and faithful, Christian and Muslim, atheist and agnostics, it is first the surprise and later the why. The why because he did not step down of his own freewill. This is not the sort of retirement that swished the former Pope out of our holy ken. Or the sort that made Apostle Paul to declare to his mentee Timothy that he had finished his work and awaited the “crown of righteousness.” It is also not the example of Prophet Samuel who poked any of his flock to say it if he erred in any way during his stewardship or whether he gave or obtained bribe.

This was the case of a state coercing a bishop to step down. The state versus the church. Adeboye stepped down, but only in the Nigerian church. We are still left with a cloud of ambiguity. He becomes spiritual leader. Does it make him also the spiritual leader of his successor in Nigeria? The church will unfold that dynamic in due course, or it will unfold itself in the relations between the two persons.

The matter is just beginning to brew. How come a law comes into place to determine how spiritual authorities determine their leaders and how long they are permitted to lead the flock? The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) is the source of all this. It categorises churches with all non-profits and requires the leaders to stay in office for a specific period and step aside.

It is a case of man playing god with its institutions. It calls to mind the question asked by famous theologian and philosopher in the Medieval Age: “When did God become man?” Peter Abelard, the castrated upstart of that age, was not referring to the friction of church and state directly, but the echoes are not mistakable. The FRC may say an Adeboye, Oyedepo, Kumuyi, et al, have come to the end of the tether as leaders of the organisation they founded. But a feeling creeps in that the state is playing god over God.

The theory of the Two Luminaries in the Middle Ages bears example. The Catholic Church was the sun and the Holy Roman Empire was the moon, although it was cited then that the “holy Roman Empire was neither Roman nor Holy.” In our case, the church is the sun, the brighter light, and the Church the moon, the lower illumination.

But the Romish Church then abided in an era of ecclesiastical dominance. Today, the secular outweighs everything, including the spiritual. The church leaders have also quite often quoted Paul’s epistle to the Romans that everyone should be subjected to the “higher powers.” Even Jesus in addressing the question of loyalty to state asked his followers to see Caesar’s coin. But he said, rather enigmatically, “give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s.” what is Caesar’s and what God’s?

I have also been rather uncomfortable when our pastors cite Paul almost uncritically. The same Paul asserted that we would rather obey God than man. So, if one of these mainstays says that they would not step down and God had not spoken to them, what shall we say? Some may want to wring their arms with their assertions about subjection to state.

But Christ was clear: “Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s.” Now, a conundrum brews. How that will play out is still in the womb.

But this FRC law seems peculiar to Nigeria. No one forces the Pope to step down. Nor any of the big church leaders in Europe or the United States. John Hagee has led his church for over 20 years. So did Graham, etc. The archbishop of Canterbury steps down at 70 years.

Some have argued that the problem with our churches is that they are run like monarchies. The overseer is the accountant, chief security officer, chief educationist, contractor, et al. His is part businessman, part prelate. When he sets up a board, it is no more than a sea of rubberstamp heads, eager to bow to the visions or orders of the leader.

This is different from the story of the counterparts in Europe or U.S. Even if they founded, they are subjected to a rule of law. And if they overplay their hands, they will face great revolt, even when they sin a sin unto death. The society also rises in righteous anger and the church leader cedes authority.

Those checks are not here in Nigeria. But is that the business of state? If the blind leads the blind, Jesus says, both shall fall into the ditch.

But when we look the Bible, not many of the men of God lived so long as stewards. Moses did, but he started late, and died with his vitals still intact. God took Enoch, ferreted Elijah away, allowed Paul, Peter and others to be killed in their prime.

These people were also working against the law of the land. Jesus was crucified because he was a revolutionary, calling his followers to place family lower than God’s people and naming himself the saviour with all its implication for revolution. Yet he declared that his kingdom is not of this world. If it were, his servants would have prevented him from the axe of the crucifixion.

So, the tension abounds. Where does the church fight and where obey?

That matter stands in the middle of the FRC rule. Many will miss these church leaders. The dapper Oyakhilome and his epistle of the sovereignty of grace. Part political, part evangelical Okotie. The prudish sobriety of Kumuyi. The apostolic brio of Oyedepo. The pugilist in Bakare. The genteel flow of Adeyemi’s sermons.

This will imply the birth of a new generation. Will they rise up to their founders? That is to be seen. On a secular plane, historians have said that the layer below the American founding fathers was peopled by far lesser men. They had nothing of sublimity and heroism of Adams, Washington, Jefferson, Henry, Madison, etc.

The classes of Adeboye havemade their followers acclaim them, at times, like some followers said of Paul: “The gods have come down in the likeness of men.”

We look forward to whether and how the leaders comply with the FRC. Will they accept the church as the better luminary or the lower? Whatever the answer, they will be haunted by Abelard’s question: When did God become man to determine when a pastor should quit the pulpit. Or when did man become God to do same!

  • Oyedepo urges Christians to obey God’s word to be successful in 2017

Oyedepo urges Christians to obey God’s word to be successful in 2017

The presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo has urged Christians to obey God’s word to be successful in the New Year.
Oyedepo said this on Saturday ‎during the cross over night service to usher in 2017, which held at the church’s headquarters, Otta,Ogun State.
The service was attended by members of all branches of the church nationwide by hooking to the headquarters through satellite broadcast.
According to Oyedepo, children of God who obey God’s commandments succeed in hard times.
“In 2017, the quality of life of any Christian is dependent on the level of his obedience to God.
“The obedience of any child of God can silence every opposition on his life,” Oyedepo said.
The presiding Bishop stated that Christians do not need to make noise to be relevant in the society, adding that they were distinguished by being obedient.
He stated that every commandment of the scripture was applicable at all times and to all children of God, irrespective of the denomination.
Oyedepo, however, took to the scriptures to declare God’s blessings on worshippers present at the ser‎vice.
Some worshippers at the church, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also expressed their expectations for the New Year, fairness and disappointments in the past year.
Mr Monday Kpumkapa, a worshipper in the church said he expected that country’s leadership had taken note of the loop holes in governance in 2016 in order to make amends in the New Year.
Kpumkapa said “we all know that the year 2016 was not a favourable one for Nigerians, it was a year of hunger and so many issues with our government.
“It will not be nice if the government still allows this hard economic situation to persist, they should do something and alleviate the plight of the masses.”
Miss Silvia Dominic, another worshipper, said she was grateful to God for the year 2016, adding that it was smooth for her.
Dominic noted that it was well with her economically, health wise, and each time she had issues, help always came to her.
She, however, expressed her desire to get married in the New Year.
Destiny Kindness, a boy of nine years and also a worshipper, said he hoped that the educational system of the country improves.
“In my school, we don’t really have good facilities that make learning easier, and I wish that things can change so that education can improve in my school and in the country.
“I also want God to provide for my parents so that they can cater ‎for my siblings and I,’’ Kindness said. (NAN)

  • Worshippers thank God despite recession

    Worshippers thank God despite recession

This is not the best of times for Nigerians. The rich and the poor feel the hardship prevalent in the land due to the current economic recession which resulted from fall in oil prices at the international market.

Jobs are hard to come by and some of those in gainful employment are losing their jobs. There is increase in poverty rate; high cases of robbery incidents and among other social vices are on the increase.

While there is no end in sight yet to the economic recession and as Nigerians continue in their lamentation over the country’s economic situation, members of Christ Holy Church (CHC) International, Province III Headquarters, Aba Abia State were preoccupied with preparation for this year’s harvest activities.

They overlooked all the economic misfortune the country is experiencing to seek the face of God in thanksgiving and bazaar in this year’s annual harvest of CHC Aba Superintendence headquarters.

At 11:00 in the morning, the atmosphere was charged when the harvest proper began and lasted till 4:00 p.m. as various groups, families, friends and well-wishers including invited guests took their turns to dance to the altar with their gifts.

According to some of some parishioners, thanksgiving is the only way they can show appreciation to God for His protection throughout the year. No amount of money or item brought before God can quantify the grace and favour that they have enjoyed from God throughout the year.

One of the invited guests said: “I am overwhelmed with what I saw here. Since I have been attending harvests in churches, I have never seen people making thanksgiving the way this people have done. In them you can see joy and happiness. For these people to have come before God with these kinds of gift items means that they made adequate preparation for this day. It shows how much they valued being alive.

“It shows how much thankful they are that God preserved their lives even in the midst of the current economic situation that the country is experiencing. It takes discipline and respect for God for a people such as these to deny themselves pleasures to do what they are doing today.”

The officiating minister, His Eminence, Rt. Rev C.C Obiefuna, Bishop of CHC Province II Headquarters, Nkpokiti Enugu Enugu State in his homily reminded Christians of the need to be thankful to God who have sustained them throughout the year.

Quoting copiously from Psalm 150, Bishop Obiefuna went further to list some of the benefits attached to thanksgiving and urged the parishioners to present their gifts before God with pure heart which he said comes with a lot of blessings.

In an interview, Elder Reginald Umeike, Barrister Donatus Ikpeogu and wife of Province III and Head of Women/Children Department Aba Superintendence, Senior Deaconess Christiana E. Umeh described this year’s edition of the harvest as a success.

According to Ikpeogu and Umeike, the annual thanksgiving day is one of the most important days in the calendar of the church as it provides them with the opportunity to thank God with whatever they have.

However, Deaconess Umeh also called on the people who are yet to imbibe the culture of thanksgiving to do so, even as she expressed hope that the 2017 harvest will be better than this year’s.

  • God’s ultimate desire for your marriage (4)

    DEAR READER,

You are welcome to God’s presence! I have shown you some of God’s desires for your marriage. Today, I shall be looking at how Marriage is for Better Living.

Marriage was instituted for the better living of mankind. It is not to bring hurts or constitute a hindrance. If you want your home and marriage to exhibit a better living, God must be at the centre of your heart and home. You have to be open to His Words and follow His instructions. His Words, instructions or commandments are not grievous or burdensome (1 John 5:3).

In other words, it is an easy thing to do because God created man with an innate desire to please Him and follow His will (Scripture). The Lord Jesus came to make it easier for man to follow and obey the Word of God. He said: Come, all that labour… for my burden is light and my yoke is easy (Matthew 11:28). Instead of seeking to do things your way, why not do them God’s way to get the results you desire cheaply.

Because family life originated from the Lord, He must be the centre of your family life to enjoy a better living. Countless people are having a near death experience in their family lives. Some married many wives and are still dissatisfied. Others are separated, while some live a cat and dog life, wishing that someone would deliver them from it. Despite all these, there are some who are enjoying family life and making a success of it. This is not just by luck. Success is not by luck, you programme yourself for the type of success you desire.

As a born-again child of God, enjoying a better family life is your birthright. It is God’s will and desire for you to enjoy an exciting marriage, home, life and family. Apart from making God the centre of your family, the next thing you must understand is that family life is meant for better living. It is meant for help, not hurt. The Bible says: I will make him a help meet (Genesis 2:18); Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9).

Family life was created to help man and not hinder him; it is not meant to make life worse for him. If that is what you have been seeing in the lives and homes of others, or maybe in yours, I can assure you that it is not what God desires for you. Whether you are a father, mother, husband, wife, child or relation, can you boldly say with sincerity from your heart that you are a help to others in the home? Or have you been a hindrance to the success of others in the home? Is it your policy at home to help family members? Or do you maintain a survival-of-the-fittest attitude?

In case someone has told you: “That’s how life is”, “Just bear it”, or “Maybe that’s your lot in life.” That’s not what God has designed for you. Don’t accept less than what God has purposed for you. Don’t allow the devil to cheat you into believing that a better living and marriage are not for you to enjoy. Your family can still stand out; your situation can still change. The breath of life can still find its way into your family, if you will co-operate with God.

As a wife/mother, God put you beside that man and those children, so you can help them. As a husband/father, God put you beside that woman, children, so you can help them, be an example to them and bring them up the right way. It is not your teachers’ responsibility to train your children. Children, God put you in that family to be a blessing (Psalm 127:3). Are you a pleasure to your family or a pain? If you are about getting married, are you ready to be a help to your mate? Or are you just looking for someone to service your needs? If you are not ready to be a help, watch it and retrace your steps.

To be a help transcends all areas of life. If one party is faltering, the other needs to lift him or her up. The Word of God says: If they fall, the one will lift up his fellow… (Ecclesiastes 4:10).

No matter how much your success, your connection or family members will also need to succeed. If you ignore their progress, you may eventually be faced with mending their failures. No matter who that member of the family is, the grace of God is sufficient for you. It will enable you to be a helper in Jesus’ name!

Financially, you are also meant to be a helper in your family. Money seeks worshippers; refuse to be its convert. Some Christians go to church, sing together, lift up hands to God, but when it comes to money, that is their god which must not be touched. Read this testimony: “I am newly married and was touched by what you narrated about homes in the article of “Family Matters”. Since then, through my application of the knowledge gained, things have changed positively for me…” Chidube, N.A. (Aba).

Money has brought division into many families. Don’t let it bring division into yours. Ensure that you are a helper to your spouse in this area. Hiding your money from one another is not the way to financial success. Render financial help to one another. The humorous thing about money is that if you don’t know how to send it on errands, it will send you and often times, on evil ones. If you have been defaulting, you can repent by saying this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

Congratulations! You are now born again! All-round rest and peace are guaranteed you, in Jesus’ Name. Call or write, and share your testimonies with me through contact@faithoyedepo.org; OR 07026385437 and 08141320204.

  • God’s ultimate desire for your marriage (2)

    Dear Reader,

I am grateful to God for the privilege to share God’s Word with you today. Two weeks ago, I taught you how to keep yourself pure.  Last week, I taught on divine favour. Today, I want to examine: How Abundance Is God’s Desire for You.

The first family that ever existed was born into abundance.  The Bible says: …Male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be FRUITFUL …have dominion over fish…, …fowl… and …EVERY living thing… I have given you EVERY herb, EVERY tree to you (Genesis 1:27-29). This, as an example, tells us that abundance implies surplus, more than enough, prosperity, excess, plenty, an increase, etc. The Lord’s desire for your home is abundance. Prosperity is meant to be your portion not only in your office, Church or with friends, but most especially in your home.

God has said concerning your home that it shall be: …A watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not (Isaiah 58:11). ‘Fail not’ means you will not be short of provisions at home both spiritually and physically. Thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens (Proverbs 27:27). Yet, you are wondering: Why is God slow concerning His promises? Has He changed His mind concerning me? Is He angry with me? Maybe He has not forgiven me that sin I confessed to Him the other day?  Or the one committed in my youth?

The Lord is a God of mercy and slow to anger; at the same time, He is a Holy God Whose eyes are too pure to behold sin in your life (Habakkuk 1:13). He wants your home not to only reflect increase, blessing and joy, but also holiness, righteousness, grace and peace. Both sides of the coin are necessary: you can’t have one side without the other. You can’t desire the Lord’s prosperity and increase in your home, and reject His holiness and righteousness. The Word of God says: Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and BLESSED him and INCREASED him (Isaiah 51:2).

Abraham our father of faith enjoyed abundance and: …Was VERY RICH in cattle, in silver and in gold (Genesis 13:2). But how did the Lord bless Abraham? Did he just wake up one day to see riches, cattle, men and maid servants, etc.? No! The Lord blessed Abraham and his household because he fulfilled a major requirement. The Word of God says: …Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do. ….For I know him, that HE WILL COMMAND HIS CHILDREN  AND HIS HOUSEHOLD AFTER HIM, and they shall keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgment that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken to him  (Genesis 18:17&19).

The Lord’s will and desire is to see you and your household swim in abundance but are you willing to fulfill the requirements? That is, will you command your children and household to follow the Lord or will you turn away from God when abundance arrives? God can’t afford to bless some men financially because they will just use the money to acquire more wives and begin to do things that cause their household to turn from God. It was Abraham’s diligence in commanding his children (household) in God’s ways that secured abundance for him and generations after. He was not only an example of what the Lord required, because God was able to say, “I know him; He will make sure everyone follows his example. In your home, can you boldly say others can follow your lifestyle? Can they look at how you live and see God’s glory, holiness and commendation? If you can’t answer this questions positively then something is wrong somewhere. Don’t be too quick to say, “Yes.” Instead, closely examine your lifestyle. Can you tell the little children at home to follow your example and God will be pleased with them?  The Lord knew Abraham was able to do this. From the above passage, the Lord reveals something vital to us. “…That the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him” (Genesis 18:19).

The fervency which Abraham gave to conduct his life and household according to God’s Word, determined how much of God’s abundance and prosperity he enjoyed. It was Abraham’s diligence in applying God’s Word that secured God’s blessings and abundance for him. You need to follow the instructions you have heard God speak concerning your home, your family, your marriage, your parents, etc, before you can see his promises come true in your life. For almost every instruction God gives, there is a reward; and for almost every reward or promise of God, there is a responsibility.

Abundance in your family life is the Lord’s desire for you.  However, it must be accompanied by a God-fearing lifestyle not only for you, but also everyone under your roof. Note: There is no success without a successor.

Abundance in the home is not just financial wealth. You can have all the money in the world and still not be prosperous. Also, you can have all the children, furniture and possessions you want, but still lack true prosperity.

You may ask: How do I enjoy abundance in my home? The Lord Jesus said: The thief comes only in order that he may steal and may kill and may destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in ABUNDANCE to the full, till it overflows (John10:10 Amp). The Lord’s presence in your heart and home is the first step to abundance. Allow Jesus to come into your heart now and your story will change. Say this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today.

  • My failure to become Ooni was an ACT of GOD

My failure to become Ooni was an ACT of GOD

Dr. Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin is a renowned educationist and founder of many institutions, including Our Saviors University, Delware, United States of America; Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Osun State; Unique Citizen University College, Ghana, and The Polytechnic, Ile-Ife.  In the build-up to the appointment of a successor to the immediate past Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, there were speculations in some quarters that Adedoyin would step into the shoes of the deceased monarch. Things, however, did not go the way many had speculated as the lot fell on the present Ooni, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi. For the first time since the appointment of the new Ooni, Adedoyin speaks on why the final selection did not go in his favour and his relationship with the late Ooni and the current one. He spoke with GBENGA ADERANTI

WHAT prompted your deep interest in education as the founder of tertiary institutions like Oduduwa University, The Polytechnic and Our Savior’s University, among others?

I read education in the university. That could be one of the reasons I am into education. I have said it many times that while I was an undergraduate at the university, a professor in the university, the University of Ife then, now Obafemi Awolowo University, in the Department of Mathematics, identified me among the students and asked me, ‘Can you assist our children in Mathematics?’

It was the belief in those days that Mathematics was a difficult subject. Every parent was always desperate that they gave good education to their children and knew fully well that Mathematics was the basic subject. It was the basic science to become anything in life. I believe that if you are good in Arithmetic, Mathematics or whatever, the sky is your limit. I read Mathematics in the university and the professor told me to teach the children while I was still in Part 2. As I was doing this, the other professors saw this, because it was in one of the classrooms in the university, and they started bringing their children. This was precisely how a student became a teacher in the university.

Immediately I graduated from the university, I was no longer interested in doing any other business. So I established a remedial school, which I called Universal Tutorial College. How did I start? My mother had a beautiful house in those days. The only thing it could cost me was a single sign board. It was only when you got to the back of the house that you would see that all that was called a school were just some planks joined together. Because my mother gave out the rooms to tenants, definitely there was no way I could have turned the rooms into classrooms. As a matter of fact, she saw it as a child’s play. I started renovating this into a normal classroom. Each time a tenant left our house, I would turn the room into a class room. Before you knew it, I took over the whole house from my mother and so a good school started as the Universal Tutorial College.

In those days, so many people attended free school. There was the need to go to school after passing their school certificate, their GCE O level, but there were no schools as we have them now. They wanted to go to tertiary institutions.

Another thing came to my mind. I could still establish another school, but it was still Universal Tutorial College. There was no law for polytechnic or whatever. I now went to the University of Benin where they were offering diploma. I started offering diploma to these people. As God would have it again, the Federal Government promulgated a decree, Decree 9, in January 1993, on the establishment of private universities, private polytechnics and so on. I applied and changed the name of Universal Tutorial to Universal College of Technology. It later metamorphosed into The Polytechnic, Ife, which is what you are seeing today. If I am not making a mistake, it was the first private polytechnic in Nigeria. Later, the concept of the university came in, and by the special grace of God, I have what is called Oduduwa University today.

If anybody gets to Oduduwa University today, they will begin to wonder if it is a state-owned university or a federal-owned one. We keep expanding every day.

Establishing a university requires a lot of money. How have you managed to cope?

Like I said, my own case is exceptional, unlike nowadays when you see a motor dealer saying I want to go into school business. A contractor would say I want to go into school business. A politician who is in government makes a lot of money and decides he wants to establish a university. Which is also good. In my own case, I started from the scratch. The buildings were already there as tutorial centre, polytechnic and so on. It was just a kind of metamorphosis. I just graduated into the university system.

Apart from that, I have some other businesses that are doing well, and with the growth, we were able to finance the university.

You mentioned other businesses you used in kick starting your university. What are these other businesses?

Yes, I had other businesses. In those days when we used to run remedial school, it was just remedial school. Look at what is happening now. If you go to any corner, you will see a remedial school. But if you don’t diversify a bit, your base will suffer. Today, I can boast of other businesses which are mostly educational, like The Polytechnic Ife; Our Savior’s University in Delware, USA; Unique Citizen University College in Ghana; Oduduwa University; International Secondary School. I still believe that all the businesses I am doing are one business, because 95 per cent of them are educational.

The businesses you venture into are usually risky. What is it that that gives you the push each time you want to start?

I am an optimistic person. I always believe that whatever I do must succeed. Anytime I intend to invest in a thing, I don’t normally doubt. When we were to get our licence and Professor Julius Okogie was there, we went to him and he said, ‘You want to establish a university? It is only wasteful people that establish universities. You have started building, you have started buying things, you are not sure whether they will approve it, you have started spending your money.’

So I agree with you that it is a very risky business, because you invested so much and the government keeps telling you that it remains this or that. The process of accreditation is not a joke. Before you get a licence to operate a university, you have about 11 steps to take, and I’m sure that each step is not a joke. So if you look at the steps you have to take to get to the approval stage, if you look at it critically, you may say I don’t want to continue with this business. But if you are sure that this is what you want to do and you are determined, I think that success will come.

Was there a time you felt discouraged that the business of education is not worth the hassles?

There was a time at the polytechnic level when I had not got the accreditation, some students rioted, destroyed the school building, destroyed the school bus and burnt everything down. I was not happy. One iron bender came to me. He did a lot of work inside the school and he said, ‘Oga, I don’t think this thing can succeed again, I advise you to start another business.’

I looked very well. It was a sober reflection. And I said this guy is making sense. Later, something again came to my mind. I told myself that was what I would pursue. I pursued it and later got the programmes accredited. Look at it today.

As that happened, I used to have a hostel, that hostel was like 10 rooms. And I said if this polytechnic should fail, just as the guy suggested, let me try a hotel business. That was how Hilton Hotel came into existence. I turned the hostel of the school into a hotel because of the problem I had at that time. But again, look at Hilton Hotel, it is one of the biggest hotels in Ile-Ife. I am always optimistic in whatever I do that success will come and success has come.

About 70 per cent of your businesses are located in Ile-Ife. What could have been the reason?

When I got to Jarusalem, my wife took me to the place, we slept in one hotel there. Around 5 am, I heard ‘Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.’ I told my wife that could not be Jerusalem but she said it was Jerusalem, Allahu Akbar in Jerusalem? When we started moving round, I listened to the way they talk about Jesus. The way we talk about Jesus here is deeper than the way they talk about Jesus. I think when you establish a business in your own town, if care is not taken, people who knew how you started, they will want to pull you down. That is why when people establish businesses in their town, such businesses hardly survive.

Apart from this, I believe that there is a certain force which I don’t think I understand myself. I have houses in Ghana, Lagos and the USA. When I travel and I tell myself that I’m going to spend three days in my Lagos house, before the second day, I would want to return to Ife. That force, I still don’t understand it up till now. I believe that there is a force that keeps bringing me to Ile-Ife and says keep on doing this. Honestly, by the time you pick seven Ife sons, you will be making a mistake if you don’t know one boy, Ramon Adegoke Adeoyin.

A professor, Professor Eyindero, once said, ‘Give me an Ife son, dead or alive, who has contributed immensely to the development of Ile Ife up to this moment.’ I cannot answer your question very well because I do not know myself. Because I don’t know the force that says sit down and keep doing it and I’m doing it and it is successful. You know that they say we have 401 deities in Ile-Ife, and there is no day in Ile-Ife that they don’t worship one god or the other. And people believe that there are many witches in Ile-Ife and that if you try anything in Ile-Ife, so and so will happen. We thank God we are here and instead of them attacking us, they are encouraging us.

Since you have done businesses and succeeded, why is it difficult for you to persuade other Ife people to establish businesses in Ife?

I have told you that my experience when I contested the position of Ooni of Ife has really made me to see that notion about Jerusalem and Jesuism. If you start business in your town where they know you well, they will likely pull you down instead of encouraging you. Each time we encourage people to come, they would want to come, but they will start thinking about other factors that could hinder them. We will keep encouraging them to start something in Ile-Ife. I’ve chatted with a number of them in the United States today to come and start something in Ife. I even encouraged one who has now settled down inside my university. How? He said he wants to start doing something in Ife just like I did. I said okay, what is your profession? He was a pilot in the United States, married to a white woman. He is now in Oduduwa University. Instead of continuing with his pilot job, he abandoned it. He came to this place and I asked him to start something inside Oduduwa University. He was able to set up something which he called Institute of Aviation, Oduduwa University, just like I encouraged him. When people like us were young in this business, attempt to get affiliations with big schools were frustrated. I just gave this thing to him on a platter of gold. If I had wanted to frustrate this my brother, I would have said go and bring $25,000 so that he can have affiliation with Oduduwa University.

Except for the faith-based universities, it is difficult for individuals to manage private varsities and succeed. How have you been coping?

People have said several times that the Federal Government should give money to private universities. Currently, they give money to state and federal universities. But with what happened many years ago when federal and state governments took over schools from their owners, even if you had invested all your life and the government gives you so and so money, then it is possible for them to take it over, even when you have spent your money. That will be different from when they say they invested their money into this. So, each time we talk about inviting government to give you money or whatever, I have a different concept on that. I feel that so many people have seen the importance of private universities and I begin to think that very, very soon, you will see that people will not go to government schools again.

It is happening at nursery and secondary levels. No reasonable person who is earning a good salary will send his child to a public school, except for what the governor of Osun is doing which I quite appreciate. Because if you see the type of buildings the man is constructing in Osun State, it is highly fantastic. Forget about politics and sentiments. The man has got 100 per cent on the building of schools. So if you look at the general attention to public schools and so on, riot and other problems, have you heard something  about that in our school?

Every day, every time, the system is running. Before you know it, students have graduated.

What is your vision in the next 10 years?

If I tell you that I don’t go to the university, you will not believe. I just go to the university to sit down for two hours in a week. I also do that at the polytechnic. If you look at it critically, you will say two hours? How do you then manage the university two hours in a week? I think if you have done the system very well, the system will organise itself. You will see that everything will work out very well. When I go to the university, I just go there to attend to people and talk to them. At least, let them see my face. If not, there will be no need to be there. That is to tell you that everything about me is organised. That is to tell you that I have removed myself from the system. With the two hours, if I don’t go there at all, the school is going on by the special grace of God. I believe that what I have done, what God has made me to do, is for generations and generations to come. If I’m not there, I want the system to continue. I believe there is a system of doing it. That is why the place is running.

At a point, everybody thought you were going to emerge the Ooni of Ife when the race was on. And you said you had never failed in anything you put your hand on. At what point did you get it wrong?

If you look at Ile-Ife today, I still believe that a lot of people love and appreciate me. I still believe that the kingmakers in their inner mind will know that this is a material. I believe that the present Ooni knows that this is an Ife son, but you know that everything now is about politics. I’m not a politician. Honestly, I don’t pray to go into politics. I’m not a failure. I’m still relevant in Ile-Ife. What happened was the way God wanted it. Because if what you want is going to affect you, God may say, ‘Shift this way.’ I believe that what has happened was the way God wanted it. Man proposes, God disposes.

I’m happy and friendly with the present Ooni. We are from the same house. He sat beside me here. He is a peaceful person. The way some people wanted it was to allow commotion and violence, but I did not do it. When the Area Commander, the Assistant Commissioner of Police came to this place and said, ‘Chief Adedoyin, they said Ife is going to burn tomorrow, so many people will be killed and so many houses will be burnt. That is the message from Abuja. That there is a rich man in Ile-Ife. He has a university. He has security. He has guns.’ I don’t have a gun. I assured him that there would be no problem. When the people came to my house here, saying ‘we no go gree.’ I said you are not going to agree about what? I gave them what I could afford and told them to go.

Me, who you say you want to fight for, don’t fight for me. The second day, I called my wife and children and I I travelled out. You want to fight for someone that is not around? When everything had cooled down, I came back and congratulated the the Ooni of Ife. We are very close. We are always chatting. We were born here. We are succeeding here and the Almighty God is helping us in Ile-Ife. How can we imagine Ile-Ife burning? Ile-Ife will never burn, by the special grace of God, and we will continue to succeed in Ife, by the special grace of God.

You were very close to the late Ooni. What are your memories of him?

One thing that I’m going to miss is his disposition at things. There was a time a high-ranking civil servant needed my assistance. He wanted the late Ooni to give him a letter for an appointment. Since I was close to the late Ooni, the big man wanted me to help him get a reference from him. In my usual characteristic, I went to the Ooni. When the late Ooni wanted to do something for me, he would be restless until he did it. But whenever he was not disposed to doing something for me, rather than discuss my request, he would say something else.

On this our Oduduwa University, he handled it as if it was his own. He gave me 25 acres of land, and the land was his own personal land. I remember again that there was a problem with a piece of land at Parakin, Ile-Ife here. I gave N2 million to somebody for the land and the land became a controversy and I insisted that I would not allow those contending the land with me to take it over. They knew the person they could talk to in Ife that I would always listen to, so they went to the late Ooni.

When they got to him, he said, ‘Leave those people, leave the land, I have so many lands. I have land at Parakin, come and take the papers.’ Somebody who just gave me 25 hectares of land, I should go and take it again? Somebody who just gave me 25 hectares of land, if I’m not a foolish person, I think I should use my common sense not to take the land. I left the land. I don’t want to say the man loved me more than his son.  He also created a town in the name of Dr. R.A. Adedoyin to be called Maye town. I have the letter surely signed by the chiefs. The man was God-sent for all the success that I have, and I believe that his contributions must have brought me to where I’m today.

Again, before he died, each time he was travelling, he would send a text, saying, ‘Take good care of our people. As you continue to do this, the Almighty God will continue to bless you.’ The last time he did that, I think it was the second day or the third day that he died. Prior to his death, he told the left chiefs and the right chiefs, ‘Do not make a mistake when I die. This is the man that will carry the luggage of Ile-Ife. Gbogbo Ife lowa nibi loni yi ooo. E ma se mistake o. Ti oju ba ye oju, ki ohun maye ohun o (the entire Ife people are here today. Do not make the a mistake). They are still alive except the Obalufe (one of the kingmakers) that is dead. All of them are still there.

There was a time I was chatting with Ooni Ogunwusi, he said the load was enormous. I told him that we will all carry it together. I reminded him of what Baba (the late Ooni) said. He is carrying the load. Look at what he is doing to that. All the 401 spiritual centres in Ife, he is remodelling them just so as to make Ife a place where we can invite people, just like we saw in Jerusalem where they took us to where Jesus was born. That will be good. What people should do now, because the luggage on his head is not a joke, is to support him so that he can succeed.

Was it the passion you have for Ife that made you think that even if you didn’t get the Ooni stool, life continues?

There was this kingmaker that called me. He said, ‘Adeoyin, be careful. We know you very well. You are the one that has the largest property in Ife. If you want Ife to burn, burn it and let’s see.’ Even if they had come to cane me inside my house because I want to become the Ooni of Ife, I would still say sorry to them. I will be the last person to fight. Some people invited me that these are the secrets of the present Ooni of Ife, let us go to court. I said this man is already the Ooni of Ife. We are from the same place. Even if I fight him and remove him as Ooni of Ife, can I still be the Ooni of Ife? Because it is going to go to another ruling house, so why am I fighting?

Apart from the fact that it was reasonable that I should not fight, because if you look at the largest investor in Ile-Ife, it is Dr Ramon Adegoke Adeoyin. I will never fight. Instead of that, if there are things I should tell him, I will tell him. He knows that I don’t need chieftaincy title. I’m not interested in becoming king. I don’t need money from him. He knows I’m not a politician. Whatever I tell him is the bitter truth. I know if he looks at it left and right, he will think twice before dismissing it. I know we can make Ife great and I will never be a party to destroying Ile-Ife.

  • God’s ultimate desire for your marriage

    Dear Reader,

You are welcome to another segment on Family Forum. Throughout this month, I shall be deliberating on the topic: God’s Ultimate Desire for Your Family. First, it is important to know that God is particularly concerned about your marriage and family. He wants to see you have the best of marriage and to enjoy a successful home. He has made everything available for you to experience a successful home. Moreover, it is God’s desire for all His children to have the best on earth, in life and for their marriages to be peaceful, and fulfilling. That includes you! Today, I will be teaching on: Keeping yourself pure.

It is God’s desire that your marriage be kept pure. You must, therefore, ensure that you keep the marriage-bed pure to enjoy the honour in marriage. The Word of God says: Marriage is honourable in all and the bed undefiled… (Hebrews 13:4). The word ‘undefiled’ there simply means kept pure. Whether as singles or married, to enjoy the honour in marriage, you must ensure that you keep the marriage-bed pure. If this was impossible, God won’t tell you to do it. Young men, don’t keep messing around with ladies, thinking that nobody knows. God’s Word says: The eyes of the Lord are in every place beholding the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:13). Don’t take away the honour that God has in store for you in marriage.

Marriage is honourable in all when the bed is undefiled. As singles, if you must enjoy honour in your marriage, you must lay a good foundation for it by keeping yourself pure. Parents, begin to train your children against pre-marital sex. It does not matter whether it is acceptable in the society or not. If you say, “After doing it, God will forgive me”, please note that the scar will be there.

The marriage bed must remain undefiled, because sex is the seal of the marriage covenant. Any sexual relationship engaged in outside marriage breaks the seal and attracts God’s punishment.  Therefore, you must never get yourself involved in it. However, if you have already defiled the bed, repent and ask God for forgiveness, then forsake it immediately.

Many people get emotionally distorted when they defile the marriage bed to the extent that it disturbs their marital life. You can save your marriage from torments by keeping your life pure. When you defile the marriage bed, you are behaving like a beast and whatever happens to a beast can happen to you anytime. Therefore, you must make a change in the right direction, in the name of Jesus Christ. The later part of our anchor Scripture says: …but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. The word ‘whore’ simply means harlot. Give no room to the devil if your soul is actually precious to you. Defiling the marriage-bed whether you are single or married, proves that your soul is not precious to you.

God made man with certain physiological and emotional needs, and marriage provides the best fulfilment for those needs. Physiologically, man needs sex; it is part of his physical nature, and the satisfaction of that urge is permitted only within the parameters of marriage. God honours the physical union of a man and his wife by ensuring that they find fulfilment in each other’s body. This is why He frowns at adultery and fornication. 1 Corinthians 7:2 says: Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. This is not to say that young men and women should rush into marriage for the sole aim of satisfying their sexual urge. That would make them nothing but bedmates. The love and excitement in such a relationship never last, and that is not God’s plan or purpose for marriage. As a single man or lady, you are expected to control your urge until you locate a suitable partner with whom you are ready to spend the rest of your life; then, get legally married. The truth is, if you cannot tame your sexual drive while single, you probably will not be able to exercise control when you are married. Flaunting God’s purpose in this area of marriage can be very costly to your home and destiny. Don’t do it.

Refuse to fall a victim if you truly have value for yourself. Don’t say that you want to earn yourself a living by whoremongering because God will judge those who do that. Stop it! Don’t wait for the fire of God to come upon you; plead for His mercy, call upon Him now that He is ready to hear you, before it’s too late.  The Word of God says: I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1). In order words, the presentation of your body unto the Almighty God as a living sacrifice is your reasonable service unto God. Any service done unto God without your body being a living sacrifice is not acceptable. It does not matter what you do and the volume of money you give in church every day, if your body is not kept pure, that service is not acceptable unto God. Whether single or married, illicit sexual affairs render your service to God “unrewardable” and will deprive you of enjoying the honour He has destined for you in marriage. God is much more interested in your person than your money or what you can do. When your person is acceptable unto God, then your service will become acceptable.

Honour in marriage is your heritage in Christ. You need to take it by force by stopping every form of harlotry in your life. Receive grace to practise the Word of God so that you can truly enjoy the honour destined for you in marriage in Jesus’ name!

If you are not born again and you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, please say this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today.

  • Elizabeth Atuche seeking God’s face

THE dark-faced beauty and wife of Francis Atuche, the former helmsman at the defunct bank PHB, Elizabeth Atuche who recently clocked fifty in February has been dancing to one song of misfortune after another ever since the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission bulldozed her husband and herself into court on charges of embezzling funds at the defunct Bank PHB. Since the rain of misfortune first fell on the Atuches, it has refused to let up and since become a torrential downpour, eventually forcing Elizabeth to seek refuge in the house of God. It was gathered that since 2014 she has been a regular visitor in church, no doubt supplicating the almighty to take away their affliction and shame. Her new-found religious devotion has amazed observers However, it seems her sojourn in the house of God is yet to yield the desired dividends as the trial of her husband alongside two other former bank MDs is set to recommence in earnest. Perhaps Elizabeth needs to pray harder.
