  • Akpabio dismisses impeachment plot against him

Akpabio dismisses impeachment plot against him

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, October 16, dismissed reports about an impeachment plot against him, saying members of the red chamber are united.

Akpabio spoke during plenary amid reports that personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) had occupied the National Assembly Complex in the early hours of Wednesday to stop the alleged move to impeach him as Senate President.

The online reports fueled speculation that some aggrieved Northern Senators, (allegedly dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu) are reviving an earlier attempt to remove Akpabio from office.

The Senate President urged the general public to disregard the rumour, saying that senators were holding plenary peacefully and observing their official duty without any hindrance.

Akpabio said: “We are here, sitting down and doing our work, very peacefully, oblivious of the mischief that is going on behind us.”

He thereafter referred the issue to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for further investigation.

He directed the committee to report their findings back to the Senate in plenary in 24 hours.

He said: “The fake news is hereby referred to the committee on special duties and should report back to the senate in 24 hours.”

Akpabio said the reports of a plot to impeach him were aimed at blackmailing him and the entire Senate to drive readership and traffic to the media platforms that reported the rumour.

“It is part of what we pass through daily. You see that they use AI to inject something to turn it around to drive traffic.

“I understand that they are being paid by YouTube if they have a lot of traffic.

“Whoever brought out this fake news must be getting a lot of payment because of the traffic going on, but I hope the public is aware that this is total fake news,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President reiterated that members of the upper chamber are united.

“The chamber is very stable and the issue of impeachment does not come in. So, (Senator) Kaka (Shehu), please investigate and report back to us as soon as practicable,” Akpabio said.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Kaka Shehu, in his response, assured that his committee would investigate the issue and report back to the Senate as soon as possible.

This is the second time there will be an impeachment report against Akpabio.

Barely two months after the Senate was inaugurated, there were reports of a plot to remove Akpabio from office.

One of the allegations was that he could be a “yes man” of President Tinubu and may ultimately turn the 10th National Assembly into a “rubber stamp” of the presidency.

Some also claimed he needed to be more tactical and sensitive whenever he spoke.

However, none of the senators confirmed that there existed a plot to impeach Akpabio.

The spokesman of the Senate, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed the speculation, claiming that the upper chamber was united and that removing Akpabio from office was impossible.

Southern youths flay fake video against Akpabio

A coalition of youths in Southern Nigeria has condemned  a negative viral video against Senate President Godswill Akpabio describing it as the handiwork of mischief makers.

The groups from the Southern Youth Development Forum inc and youth leaders from Eket, Ikot Ekpene, Oron, and Uyo federal constituencies of Akwa Ibom State said the video was to undermine the integrity and humanist posture of the Senate President.

In a statement in Uyo jointly signed by Mr James Akpan, Uduak Humphrey and Uchenna Idechukwuka, the group said that Akpabio couldn’t have said that Nigerians should go and eat free food because of the hard times.

“The fake video circulating in social media against the Senate President, senator Godswill akpabio is an insult to the people of Akwa ibom and the Niger Delta where the Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio comes from.

“We see this as sponsored by the people who are unhappy with the Senate President’s popularity in the country and are  making attempts to cause  disaffection among the people,” the statement said.

The group warned the enemies of Akpabio to know that he is loved and appreciated by Nigerians because of his humaneness and track record of good governance.

“We are solidly behind him and  no amount of blackmail will make the people to hate him. The doctored video is also to create impressions that Akpabio is anti people but they don’t know him as we do.

“As commissioner, governor and minister Akpabio has carved a niche for himself as a man who turned boys to men, a detribalised Nigerian, a great philanthropist, a great man who has affected the lives of so many people.

“This is a man who changed the face of governance in Akwa Ibom state and the Niger Delta. His support for President Bola Tinubu is also making some people envious of him. Akpabio as Senate President is busy mobilising the grassroots for Mr President.

“No amount of fake news will distract him or his followers who are growing across region. We are ready to raise more followers for the President through Akpabio because he is a man who loves the masses,” the youths maintained.

They cautioned those playing politics of blackmail, and fake news to desist henceforth,  “as we are with the Senate President, his followers cut across nigeria and are  beyond religion and ethnicity”.

Emeka Obielom, a supporter of the Senate President and International coordinator of the Team Good Governance group,  said that Senate President remains the strong voice for the masses.

Obielom, who spoke from outside the country, said that Southeastern youth groups stand with the Senate President adding that the group will continue to invest their loyalty and support for him  because of what he  represents in terms of good governance and his well vouched pedigree.

Akpabio: Senator Ubah was a pillar in 10th Senate

    • Says I threw away my phone when I heard of his death

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, yesterday described the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as one of the pillars of the 10th Senate.

He said he threw away his phone when he heard the news that he had passed on.

The former Akwa Ibom State governor recalled his instant reaction when he received the news of the sudden death of Senator Ubah, over a fortnight ago, saying, “I was jolted.”

Akpabio made these assertions when he led some of his colleagues on a condolence visit to the widow of the late lawmaker, Uchenna, in his Lagos residence.

A statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, quoted him as saying: “I was jolted when I received the news of the death of a very dedicated and patriotic colleague, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

“When I received a call from Senator (Barinada) Mpigi, that I should talk to you, I never knew it was the news of Senator Ubah’s death.

“I was thinking of something else and even asked to speak with him not knowing that it was about his demise.

“If you could remember, I didn’t conclude the conversation with you. I threw away the phone because of the shock.

“We never thought Senator Ubah would die in the next 40 years, but who are we to question God?”

According to Akpabio, “Senator Ubah was one of the pillars in the 10th Senate. Let me also apologise for my inability to get back to you after that call that ended abruptly. I was so devastated and traumatised about the news.

“We learnt of your arrival in the country two days ago and so we decided to come and condole you and the children as well as other members of the family.”

To the children, Akpabio said, “your father brought you to the world and handed you over to God.  You have to keep the memories of your late father alive. Death can happen to anybody but my prayer is that none of us should bury our children. Be proud that you are alive to bury your father and not the other way round.

“On behalf of the 10th Senate, where your late father and husband belonged, we console you all. We can’t question God, we can only say, it is the will of God. We wouldn’t have wished this for any of our colleagues or anyone else.

“We would be there with you all the way, in order to give him a befitting burial. He left so many legacies. May his soul rest in peace and may you be strong in the Lord to take care of the children.”

In his response, on behalf of the family Prince Chidi Orizu (Capt), thanked the President of the Senate and his entourage for finding time to visit the family. He promised to keep the Senate and its leadership informed on the burial plans.

Akpabio said: “The theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day is in sync with the global attention accorded to issues of environment and as the conscience of the society, it behooves the media to be deliberate in their reportage of climate issues.

“Environment and climate are life and we must be part of the conservation of the environment for humanity to thrive before we talk about politics and related issues”.

The Senate President noted that the world was faced with the issue of global warming, which Nigeria is also not immune to, adding that the media could do more in public enlightenment and education for the understanding of every citizen.

Akpabio, however, celebrated the Nigerian journalists for their sacrifices despite working under inclement conditions promising that the 10th National Assembly will always stand for a free press in the country.

“I want to say congratulations. I pray this commission will bring a lot of development to Southeast.  It will assist them to stop any form of agitation and bring peace to the region. When harmonised, it will address  the fears of the people of the Southeast.”

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu expressed gratitude to the Senate for passing the bill.

Kalu, who sponsored the bill, said its passage came at a time when the Southeast Caucus of the National Assembly is championing an initiative, known as   Peace in Southeast Project (PISE-P).

The initiative is a non-political movement that would adopt a non-kinetic approach to resolving the problems in the Southeast.

Kalu said that once the commission is established, its impact would be felt in the region, especially in terms of jobs, businesses and infrastructure.

He expressed optimism that President  Tinubu would assent to the bill when transmitted to him.

Kalu said: “I’m grateful to my colleagues in the Senate led by   Senator Godswill Akpabio for passing through 3rd reading of the bill seeking the establishment of Southeast Development Commission (SEDC), which I sponsored.

With the passage at both chambers, a conference committee will be set up to harmonise differences between the one passed by the House and that of the Senate before it will be transmitted to President Bola  Tinubu for his assent.
