    Gombe United have concluded plans to axe six players who they have been deemed surplus to requirements while another six will be brought in to replace those that have been asked to go ahead of the start of the second round of the league season.

    The Desert Scorpions returned to the topflight at the start of the current campaign and the General Manager of the team, Salihu Ahmad  stated that it is important that the club improves on the first round performances to ensure that they remain in the elite division at the end of the season.

    He thumbed up the Manu Garba led technical crew while asserting that Gombe United will go into the transfer market to pick tested players that will enable them realise their season’s objectives.

    Gombe United are 14th on the log with 22 points from 18 games and they have a game at hand against Enugu Rangers before they end their first round proceedings.

  • Gombe Utd’s Kennedy set to resume training

    Gombe United’s Kennedy Obiokor has declared his imminent return to training.

    “I am still down injured but I am happy that the healing process has been gradual and it looks like I will resume light training soon,” Obiokor told Goal.

    “I’ve been very confident during this process to make a return but as much as I would have love to get back to the field, it’s important that I listen to the advice of the medics for proper healing. Though I have not started training yet but I am getting closer to resuming light training.”

    “Gombe United is competing along with 19 other teams in the NPFL for the top prize. Regardless of where we are, the focus is to achieve our set target and stand at the end of the season.”

    The defender has only featured in three Nigeria Professional Football League games for the Savannah Scorpions this season due to a thigh injury.

  • Commissioner showers cash gifts on Gombe Utd. players

    The Commissioner of Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Farouk Yarma has fulfilled his promise to reward Gombe Utd. FC  players with cash gifts if they perform exceedingly well.

    Yarma made the  promise when the management and players of the club paid him a courtesy on January 3rd. Yarma who is also the Secretary of Gombe Utd. and Director of the Nigerian National League(NNNL)   had promised the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand  Naira for every away win. One hundred thousand Naira  for an away draw, fifty thousand naira for home win . For each goal scored the scorer will earn twenty thousand Naira. For every assist, the palyer will earn ten thousand Naira.

    Meanwhile, the cash gifts were presented on Thursday evening by the personal Assistant to the Hon.Commissioner who is also the Team Manager of F.C Yaramalight, Hon. Habu Yau at the Gombe Township Stadium. Sanusi Ronaldo Sani and Manir Ubale were among the beneficiaries who  got cash gifts of twenty thousand n Naira each for their goals against  Sunshine Stars of Akure, Austin Oladipo also receieved twenty thousand naira for his goal against Nassarawa United.

    Enyimba attacking midfielder, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu has said his side will be tough against top-flight newcomers, Gombe United.

    The People’s Elephant are hosts of the Desert Scorpions in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 3 clash at adopted ground, UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

    Ibenegbu said his side would pull their weights against the Gombe outfit aimed at amassing the whole three points at stake in the clash.

    “It was really unfortunate the loss at Plateau United in the midweek game in Jos we worked hard to pick at least a point to no avail.

    “Right now we have shifted the whole attention on the matchday 3 clash against newcomers, Gombe United.

    “We will come out strong to attack from the blast of the whistle to ensure we claim the whole three points at stake.

    “Already, we quite understand that there is no small team in the top-flight so the idea of underrating the side will not come up at all, we will be hard and tough throughout the encounter.

    “We must assert ourselves strongly to be on the right path towards achieving our lofty dreams for the on-going season.

    “And the path to send the right signal across to other top-flights is a convincing victory against Gombe United so that we can comfortably take it up from there to other matches on the calendar,” said the former Heartland and Warri Wolves goal poacher to supersport.com.

    The six-time Nigerian champions were beaten 1-3 at Plateau United during the midweek clash heading into the Sunday’s tie against Gombe United while the debutants outplayed fellow newcomers, Remo Stars.

    Gombe United players have received money boost ahead of the forthcoming Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

    The Savannah Scorpions are currently in Kaduna for their final camping in preparation for the January 15 league kicks off.

    In his capacity as the secretary of the Gombe United FC Advisory Committee, Mallam Farouk Yarma met with the players and technical crew and promised them monetary reward.

    Yarma contributed the sum of three hundred thousand (N300, 000) to the players and N50, 000 to the technical crew, as part of the package for the trip to Kaduna.

    The Proprietor of Yarmalight FC who is also the Pioneer Chairman of the Gombe State Sports Commission also made the following pledges, in order to boost the club in the coming season:

    The players are to get the sum of one hundred and fifty naira (N150, 000) for every away win and one hundred thousand naira (N100, 000) for an away draw.

    The sum of fifty thousand naira (N50, 000) for a home win while for each goal scored, the scorer will earn twenty thousand naira (N20, 000). For every assist, the player earns ten thousand naira (N10, 000) reward.

    “Gombe United belongs to all of us, I urge individuals and cooperate organisations to complement the efforts of the state government in financial the club. We all have a stake in revatilising and sustaining Gombe United, our pride,” Farouk who is also a Director of Nigeria National League (NNL) Yarma stated.

    Gombe United technical adviser, Hassan Abubakar has invited 13 new players for a week’s screening exercise.

    Abubakar disclosed to SportingLife that the screening will start today and end by weekend.

    The former  Technical Adviser of Olympic FC of Niamey, Niger Republic, who guided the team to the premier league, said he wants to beef up the team ahead of the Super Four clash.

    He also stressed further that the team will start the pre-season camping at the end of the screening in a bid to have a good outing at the Super Four which he aims to win.

    “I have invited 13 good players for screening to reinforce the team. The screening starts on Monday and ends at weekend. We are planning for pre-season training but it is not yet decided. The purpose of the pre-season is to prepare ahead of the super four competition which I hope to win and get the cup,” Abubakar disclosed to SportingLife.

    The former Technical Adviser to Niger Tornadoes, Kaduna United, Zamfara United, Sunshine Stars, Wikki Tourists, JUTH and Dolphins also said he is not distracted with the speculation going around about his position at the club.

    “Everybody has the right to make his opinion. As you are hearing it I am hearing it too. All I now is that I am still in charge of the team for now. The club’s management has not told me that  theleadership position  has changed. We are preparing well and we are not distracted.”

    Coach Abubarka hails stakeholders on Gombe Utd promotion

    Chief Coach of Gombe United, Coach Hassan Abubarka has praised the Governor of Gombe State , Hassan Ibrahim Dankwambo for his morale and financial support to Gombe United which has resulted to the promotion of the team back to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

    The former Niger Tornadoes, Zamfara United, Kaduna United, Juth FC of Jos and Olympic FC of Niamey coach spoke of his appreciation for the enormous support from the governor and the former accountant general of the federation to Gombe United.

    Abubarka who spoke to crestnewsng.com with delight of his team’s promotion to the NPFL was also full of praise to  Salisu Ahmed Saad, the General Manager of Gombe United, Ibrahim Kwairanga, a board Member, Haruna Garba the Team Manager and other associates of Gombe United and football stakeholders in Gombe State of their selfless contributions, sacrifices and concerted efforts that contributed in bringing back the Jewel of Savanah to the Nigerian  elite league.

    He also thanked God Almighty with special acknowledgment of the contributions of his assistant coach, former youth international, coach Oladuni Oyekale for the feat they both achieved, though  an enormous task as at the time of his engagement to Gombe United.

    The Coach did not leave out the contributions of the Supporters Club and football fans in the state and promised to build on the successes achieved so far with Gombe United as soon as hostilities resume in the 2016/2017 football season.

    El Kanemi play Gombe Utd Friday

    •Travel to Cameroon Saturday

    El-Kanemi Warriors are expected to play a friendly  game against Gombe United on Friday.

    The club’s media officer, Anthony Obaseki said the team will play its final friendly game in Maiduguri on Wednesday before moving to Gombe State on Thursday.

    According to him,  the Warriors will leave for Cameroon on Saturday to play some friendly matches and return to Katsina for a closed camping for its last phase of programme.

    The team has been training at the University of Maiduguri Sports ground where they played two friendly matches at the weekend.

    The first match was against Real Madrid FC of Gombe which ended 3-2 in favour of the Borno Army while the second match against Yerwa Academy also in the same margin.

    “The friendly matches were tough but El-Kanemi Warriors proved that they were not in the same class. We are getting set for the league with what the team played in the two friendly games. I am sure we will go far in the league. We will play our last friendly match on Wednesday before leaving for  closed camping,” Obaseki told SportingLife.

    “I want to say here that coach Ladan Bosso is doing a great job of building a new El Kanemi Warriors and everybody here is happy we have him as the new coach,” he said.

  • Oyekale leads Gombe Utd against First Bank

    Coach Oladunni Oyekale will perform his first official assignment as Gombe United gaffer when the club faces First Bank in the Federation Cup Round of 32 clash at the Confluence Stadium, Kogi State this afternoon.

    Oyekale was appointed chief coach of the Desert Scorpions this week to assist Austin Aguavoen who is the team’s Technical Adviser.

    SportingLife understands that Eguavoen and Oyekale arrived in Gombe early this week to fine-tune their agreements with the club.

    But after their presentations to the players on Monday, Eguavoen was allowed to return home and resume officially this Monday while Oyekale stayed behind to take charge of the team for the Federation Cup.

    Eguavoen replaced former manager Maurice Cooreman after his release by the club on mutual agreement.

    Gombe United progressed to the Round of 32 after winning a protest against Baton FC of Imo State for fielding ineligible players during their round of 64 clash on Wednesday. Baton had originally won by 3-2.

    Gombe’s media officer, Halilu Mohammed said his side are ready for the match

    “We won a protest against Baton because they fielded ineligible players. We’ve learnt our lessons from what happened last week and we are ready to redeem our image by going all out to secure victory,” Mohammed said to SportingLife.

    Agbim joins Gombe Utd

    Gombe United has signed Super Eagles goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim, on a one-year deal.

    Gombe team manager Alhaji Kwaranga told MTNFootball.com that the team has secured the services of the experienced goalkeeper.

    “We have signed Nigeria international goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim,” Kwaranga informed MTNFootball.com

    “His experience will be useful to our team as we look forward to new season. He signed a one-year deal.”

    Agbim has featured for Rangers and Warri Wolves previously.
