Group commends EFCC for investigating Ochekpe , others over campaign funds

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission ( EFCC ) has been commended for investigations into the embezzlement of government money by previous administration to fund the 2015 elections.

The group, Coalition of Youths Congress of Nigeria said what EFCC is doing is instructive as another election year approaches and expressed the hope that those involved in diverting public fund to finance elections must be punished to deter others in future.

The group, which addressed journalists  on Monday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos was reacting to the arraignment of a former Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State, Mr. Raymond Dabo and the Coordinator of Jonathan/Sambo re-election campaign in Plateau State, Evangelist Lyons Sunday Jatau who were dragged to court over allegation of embezzlement of N450 million belonging to the federal government.

The leader of the group, Mr. John Pam  said the anti-corruption stance of the present administration would ensure that such perfidy and use of money meant for the development of the country by politicians at the corridor of power would not happen again.

The trio would be arraigned on February 13, 2018 at a Federal High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau state capital on charges of receiving the money from the former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke, to finance the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his deputy.

At the first hearing of the suit, Ochekpe had told trial Justice Justice Musa Haruna Kurya that she gave the money to the late PDP governorship candidate in the 2015 gubernatorial election in Plateau G.N.S Pwajok.

The group therefore urged EFCC to leave no stone unturned to make sure that money politics in Nigeria is discouraged and also to ensure that those in the custody of public fund do not deep their hands into the till to serve themselves.

“We are commending EFCC for taking these people to court so that when found guilty justice will take its cause, which will sound as a warning to others who may want to so corrupt themselves by diverting public funds meant for the provision of social amenities for our citizens. The interest of our group is to ensure corrupt free society and for the first time we have seen a government that is determined to rid this scourge from the country,” Pam said.

  • ‘Nizamiye hospital can compete anywhere in Europe, America’

‘Nizamiye hospital can compete anywhere in Europe, America’

The Public Relations Officer of the Turkish Nizamiye Hospital Mr. Mohammed Abubakar has said that the hospital which was commissioned by former President Goodluck Jonathan can compete with any hospital in Europe and America.

The Image maker of the hospital made the statement during an interview exclusively with select editors on Friday.

According to him, the hospital qualities have given Nigerians reasons not to travel abroad for medical treatments because all they needed can be done in the hospital here in Nigeria.

    Excerpts below:

The Turkish Nizamiye Hospital was established in 2014. Please, can you share your experience?

Thank you. Yes, you are indeed correct. The hospital was commissioned on 20th February 2014 by his Excellency, former president Goodluck Jonathan. Since then, we have strived not just to be in operation, but also to ensure that our services compare to what is obtainable in Europe and America. The journey has been incredible as well challenging.

As you may be aware, the Nizamiye hospital is not a magnificent building; we have very experienced doctors and nurses that have continued to give in their best in the discharge of their duties. So, in a nutshell, I would say that Nizamiye hospital has not only distinguished itself as a reliable medical facility in Nigeria, it has also given Nigerians a reason not to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Talking about your services, don’t you think it might be out of reach for most Nigerians?

The hospital renders specialized services like Open Heart Surgery, Angiography, CT Scan, MRI, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Algology, to mention but a few. These are highly skilled services that are on their own quite expensive even in western countries.

That does not mean that we are ignorant of the implication of getting care for such services, but you can be assured that our prices are less than what you get when you travel to Europe and America. Again, we are all aware that it is estimated that Nigeria spends about $1 billion on medical tourism annually. The question thus is what the illnesses that take Nigerians abroad?

Take the example of Open Heart Surgery. You will agree with me that open heart surgery entails more than just the procedure itself. There is also the periodic check. Now, say individual travels all the way to India for Open heart surgery; the risk is much higher because such an individual would be dealing with a long flight and the cabin pressure which might not be suitable for his condition.

Okay, say the operation was successful, such individual would also need to travel back to India for a follow-up check with the doctors, and that would even cost money. So which is the best option? So I still maintain my position that our services might not be out of the reach of Nigerians because of the added benefits.

But here at Nizamiye hospital, we have our doctors’ resident within the hospital premises, and we operate on 24 hours and seven days a week basis for all cases including open heart surgery. So tell me which is cost effective?

You mentioned that the hospital has an open heart surgery clinic; can you shed more light on it?

Yes. We have an open heart surgery clinic headed by a renowned cardiovascular surgeon with over 30 years experience and with over 15,000 open heart surgeries in Turkey. And since we opened the clinic in 2016; we have performed 18 successful open heart surgeries, two valve replacements, and 16 coronary bypasses.

Our open heart surgery team is also resident in the hospital premises, and what this means is that they operate on 24 hours and 7 seven days a week.  I dare say we are about the only hospital in Abuja that has this kind of setting.

Given the fact that the hospital is well equipped, there have been some issues with the high number of deaths in the hospital. What do you have to say?

Thank you for this question. There is an expectation that regardless of the medical condition of any patient, doctors at the Nizamiye hospital should be able to perform some miracle of some sort. While this is understandable given our level of expertise, however, in medical science, when a case is severe, it is terrible and there is little or nothing some doctors can do.

As regards your question, the Nizamiye hospital as a policy does not turn down patients. We accept and give an objective assessment to relatives and give them all the options. In terrible cases that such patients have a couple of days to live we advise and in most instances the relatives insist that we take in the patient so he or she can die in peace.

What am I saying in essence? Nizamiye hospital seems to be the last resort. And that is a massive challenge for us because we see cases which we would have handled comfortably if the patient had turned in early. So this saddens us and a burden we have to carry.

Please tell us about the quality of staff at the hospital as well as the employment criterion?

The Nizamiye hospital boasts of a remarkably brilliant workforce. From our consultants to doctors, nurses, laboratory attendants, everyone one has distinguished him or herself. We took time to source for the best hands from Turkey and Nigeria because we pride ourselves as a world-class medical facility.

It was stated in some quarters that the hospital was built at the cost of $20 million. If true, why such investment in Nigeria?

You are correct. But as we speak, expansion works are ongoing at the hospital. So in a way, the $20 million mark has been extended to something around $30 million. Let me also inform you that the Nile University, which is a sister organization intends to use the hospital as its teaching hospital because it now has a fully accredited medical school.

So why the massive investment? Nigeria is worth the investment. Let me start by giving a background on the promoters of the Nizamiye hospital. The hospital is promoted by First Surat Group of Companies with interest in the educational and health sectors.

I am sure you are aware of the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges ( NTIC ) and the Nile University. These are organizations under the First Surat Group of Companies umbrella. The organization is owned by a group of Turkish and Nigerian investors, and they have been in operation since 1998. As regards the hospital, the massive amount of monies spent on medical tourism was a factor.

We as an organization sat and said cant we bring what is obtainable in Europe and America to Nigeria? And the answer we got was yes. And we set out to work; we travelled to most world-class hospitals in Europe and America and understudied them. This was what gave birth to the Nizamiye hospital essentially.

You recently celebrated 18 successful open heart surgeries. It appears that is one area the hospital has capacity?

Like I mentioned earlier, the hospital has various clinics that operate on 24 hours and seven days a week basis. That is not all; our doctors are resident in Nigeria and the hospital premises. So in a couple of minutes, you have a doctor with you regardless of the medical care. Secondly, Open heart surgery is not the only area we have the capacity.

The open heart surgery clinic is just one. We are also specialized in Algology, which is the treatment of extreme pains. This is also not common in Nigeria. But we have a specialist with over 20 year’s experience. I think we are among the few hospitals with neonates ICU with ventilators in Abuja. And we have about 6 of such.

There is also neurosurgery, orthopaedics, general surgery, ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Anaesthesiology & Reanimation, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dermatology and many more. I think the Nizamiye hospital can compete with any hospital in Europe and America.

Why Wike still hates Buhari, Amaechi – Rivers APC

*President was never under pressure to declare state of emergency in Rivers, insists APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has revealed that Governor Nyesom Wike still hates President Muhammadu Buhari and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for masterminding the ouster from office in 2015 of the then President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ).

It also insisted that President Buhari was never under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, as alleged by Wike.

Rivers APC, through Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the Senior Special Assistant on Media/Public Affairs Consultant to Rivers State Chairman, Chief Davies Ikanya, stated these yesterday in Port Harcourt.

Rivers governor, while receiving Anglican Bishops of Niger Delta Province at the Government House, Port Harcourt over the weekend, alleged that President Buhari was under intense pressure from leaders of the APC to declare a state of emergency in Rivers.

The main opposition party in Rivers ( APC ) said: “Wike’s hatred for President Buhari and Amaechi is legendary, since the two APC leaders masterminded the ouster from office of his ATM, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, under whose watch our common patrimony was looted with impunity.

Because of this, he is ever ready to use any forum to castigate, insult and malign these two great leaders, not minding the dire consequences.

“President Buhari never complained to Wike of any pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. We are shocked that Wike could bring the exalted office of the governor to odium, in such a reckless manner, to ascribe to President Buhari something he never said.

“To the best of our knowledge, the three issues that Wike discussed with President Buhari were Ogoni clean-up, the Nkpogu Junction (Port Harcourt) incident with Amaechi, where attempt was made on the life of the Transportation Minister and the detention of Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) for one week.

“Nobody is interested in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, not minding the abysmal failure of Wike to ensure protection of the lives and property of the people of Rivers State.

“We urge Wike not only to call himself to order, but to formally apologise to President Buhari for ascribing words he never uttered to him, to score cheap publicity, always associated with him.”

Rivers APC also stated that the Neighborhood Watch about being established by Wike’s government would be used to cause more mayhem in Rivers state, to boast his chances during the 2019 governorship election, declaring that the Rivers governor stood no chance in any election, without violence.

The main opposition party reassured the peace-loving people of Rivers state and other Nigerians that not minding the abysmal failure of Wike in governance, the Federal Government would always protect lives and property in the Niger Delta state.

Kaduna rail: Obasanjo not Jonathan’s idea – El-Rufai to Bruce

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of  Kaduna State said on Friday that  Senator Ben Murray Bruce (Bayelsa East) was wrong to claim that the Kaduna rail system was initiated by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

President Muhammadu Buhari and El-Rufai had jointly taken a train ride in Kaduna on Thursday, with Bruce teasing the  President to thank ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for the ride.

The train took Buhari and El-Rufai from Rigasa to Kakuri on the outskirts of Kaduna to enable the president to inaugurate the country’s first Inland Dry Port.

Bruce, writing on his Twitter handle on Thursday said the rail system was “entirely” Jonathan’s achievement.

“I hope President @MBuhari remembers to say thank you to former President @GEJonathan for the train ride he enjoyed in Kaduna. Some of us haven’t forgotten that that achievement was ENTIRELY the handiwork of the Jonathan government. Nigeria should give honour to whom honour is due

    — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) January 4, 2018

The governor’s response, also on Twitter, was swift in coming.

He said: “Wrong distinguished senator! The Obasanjo administration which Jonathan was not part of, designed, raised the financing and started the EPC of the Lagos-Kano dual track-standard gauge rail system, and the Abuja Light Rail,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Yar’Adua-Jonathan stalled both projects for two years!”

  • Stable government best for Africa — Jonathan

Stable government best for Africa — Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says stable government is the best way of attracting development to Africa.

He also added that Liberia is becoming a model of democracy in Africa and beyond, having attained “political stability’’.

“Looking at the political history of Liberia, the country has passed through challenges.

“They conducted elections and the (outgoing) president stayed for the complete two terms, and this president is about handing over to another elected president.

“That shows that Liberia is now politically stable to be a good example of democracy. Democracy is being institutionalised in Liberia.

“It will help the country because it shows that the country is stable and it will attract foreign direct investors

“And for Africa, especially in the West African sub-region nit is a great achievement.’’

“When I was in office, we tried to make sure that we stabilised democracy across the ECOWAS states because the issue of all kinds of unconstitutional government, we see that it is over in ECOWAS and Africa.

“The Liberian situation will help us so much because it is another clear case of a country that has moved from some illegitimate government and crisis to an established and stable democracy.

“This transition is critical because if we succeed, if Liberia succeeds, West Africa has succeeded, Africa has succeeded.’’

Liberian voters have chosen a successor to outgoing President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, whose 12-year tenure as Africa’s first elected female head of state ends in January.

Results of the delayed run-off election, due to be announced in three days, will determine who becomes the next President between ex-football superstar, Sen. George Weah and incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai.

  • Quest for change made me team up with Buhari – Amaechi

Quest for change made me team up with Buhari – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, says that his pursuit for change made him to leave his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), to join the All Progressives Congress ( APC ).

Amaechi made the disclosure on the sidelines of the Future Awards Africa held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos last Saturday.

He said that he would have done otherwise by staying in PDP and fight for the change, instead, there was a need to cross over to APC because of his belief in President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I moved from PDP to APC because I am tired of what is happening in the party, I have the option to stay because of my position as the Chairman of the Governors then.

“I can use my position to fight them (PDP) and get what I want because I believe Nigeria was not going in the right direction by then.

“My attention and belief shifted to Buhari which was the viable alternative, I believe in the change mantra because it is the only way to improve on what is on ground.

“He has not disappointed because the economy is now back on track and is growing. This is evident in the current prices of food items because it’s getting lower,’’ he said.

Amaechi said that prices of food would further crash because of the efforts of the government at making the country self-sufficient in food production.

“With the change going on, the price will further crash because before this government came in, the price were soaring because we were importing food items, things we can grow here.

“Now the policy of government which banned the importation of rice is working, the price is now about N16,000, but before now,  we are importing about N3 billion worth of rice.

“Before now too, we were importing another N3 billion worth of poultry products, we are importing tomatoes but with the ban, we are now concentrating on our local production.

“Many states in the northern part of the country are now growing rice in large quantities though by right, the South-South geo-political zone should be doing that because they are the ones in the swampy area,’’ he said.

Amaechi said that the wastage in the PDP era was alarming, adding that the depletion of the excess crude account was supposed not have been.

“When Obasanjo was leaving, he left about 65 billion dollars in the Excess Crude Account, but this money was frittered away and we wonder where the money is.

“As at then, the price of crude oil during the president Goodluck Jonathan’s administration hovered around 140 dollars with this, they did not leave anything for the incoming government.

“With that kind of money, we should be thinking of connecting Nigeria through rail system. The rail between Ibadan to Kano would have been completed.

“Also the rail gauge between Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and Lagos to Calabar, but all the excess crude money was frittered away, we need to ask questions,’’ he said.

  • ‘Friends’ abandon Ex-President Jonathan in the cold

‘Friends’ abandon Ex-President Jonathan in the cold

WHEN fortune flees from men, they are often forsaken by the friends they made while they were riding high on the waves of fame. If former President Goodluck Jonathan did not believe these words before now, events in the past few days must have forced a rethink.

The former President turned 60 years old on Monday, but instead of the usual avalanche of glowing advertorials in newspapers and the electronic media, the gift his former associates gave him was silence.  Only a few close pals even bothered to publicly congratulate him on adding another year.

Since his defeat at the polls in the last presidential election, Jonathan has been left in the cold by his multitude of fair weather friends and political jobbers who filled his ears with false proclamations of undying love and friendship while he held sway as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

While he used his position to secure favourable deals for many of his so-called friends, they were the first to jump ship at the first sign of trouble. Now mostly alone and powerless in the grand scheme of things, Jonathan is forced to rely on the few faithful comrades who have remained as close as blood brothers to him.
