    Hope beyond Chibok

The girls’ freedom is as unforgettable as their abduction was unparalleled. Never in the history of Nigeria or, for that matter, any other country, had some 276 pupils been seized and taken away from their school in one night. And never had any government betrayed such lethargy and lack of character as that of former President Goodluck Jonathan when the unthinkable did indeed happen, a failing which, some have said, ruled out prompt rescue of the girls.
Nor have Nigerians ever come up against such an ambitious and bloodthirsty sect as Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility for the Chibok abduction. Not that there wasn’t anything similar. In the 1980s, the Maitasine riots shook a good chunk of the North, claiming thousands of lives across Sokoto, Maiduguri, Kano, Yola and Bauchi, but the sect which could well have been the precursor of Boko Haram, did not claim territory, hoist a caliphate flag or abduct schoolchildren.
On Thursday, two and a half years since their abduction, 21 of the girls were freed. They came looking frail and gaunt and had such a vacant gaze that even without the training of a medical doctor or psychologist, you were sure that nearly three years in the hands of their abductors left them not just physically bruised but probably mentally drained. But, bruised or drained, it was pure joy having the 21 back.
Yet, it was joy amid grief. On Wednesday a blast killed eight and injured 15 in Maiduguri, a city which the terror group coveted so much that it hit it so relentlessly. In January last year a similar explosion killed 19 persons at a crowded market in the city, a 10-year-old suicide bomber blamed for the blast. That Wednesday some eight members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as the Shia sect, were killed in skirmishes across Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto during a procession. The Shiites were reportedly attacked by mobs, which seemed to denounce them almost everywhere they turned up. Clearly, more work must be done to curb sectarian violence and reassure everyone that indeed they are free to identify with any religion and are protected to practice it within the confines of the law.

The release of the 21 girls, brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government, has triggered some academic concerns. One, did the government swap the girls for some Boko Haram commanders? Two, was money paid to the Islamist group before the girls were freed?

Both questions are irrelevant, whether the answers are yes or no. In hostage situations, both options are routinely applied provided the abducted are freed. Information minister Lai Mohammed has said there was no such swap, and that the return of the girls was the product of painstaking work and trust on the side of government and of Boko Haram.

Finding the girls and bringing them back was a task Dr Jonathan and his government clearly failed to accomplish. They doubted that the girls were taken away in the first place, and when they could no longer deny, they just did not have the heart for any rescue. Even when they tried to negotiate with Boko Haram, they came up against swindlers and remained clueless till the end.

The Muhammadu Buhari administration deserves credit. The rescue of the 21 girls happened at a time Boko Haram was factionalised and a certain Abubakar Shekau had been killed several times over. So securing the release of this number of the girls when no one was sure who was in command of the group must the result of some credible effort, as Alhaji Mohammed inferred.

The return of the 21 Chibok girls must have forced some to revise their positions, one of which that President Buhari promised more than he could deliver. Some also concluded that the girls would have been scattered, possibly across borders, married off or killed. The return of the 21 offers hope that though the girls may have been dehumanised, in fact, one returned with a baby, at least, some are alive and can recover their lives.

The best news of Thursday silenced those who said the whole thing was a hoax, a point that was driven home by a relieved Chibok community leader who, alongside his people, was not only troubled by the abduction but also haunted by the fact that some believed it did not take place.

Chibok, a little humble town, exploded in joy as the 21 were freed. But it was joy that spread beyond its borders to neighbouring communities all the way to the nation’s capital and across national boundaries. The abduction got the attention of world leaders, each adding their voice to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. With the release of the 21, they have started voicing their relief, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair being one of the first to speak. Mr Blair said he was happy the 21 have come out, urging that the rest be found and returned too. United States First Lady Michelle Obama should be too, as should others who, in vain, nudged Dr Jonathan to secure the Chibok girls’ release.

Thursday also brought hope that the nearly 200 girls still in captivity could return, and, away from abductions, that perhaps the unflattering national economy could also get a lift.

  • Group accuses Amaechi of ganging up against Jonathan

Group accuses Amaechi of ganging up against Jonathan

The forum of Niger Delta Clan Chiefs and Elders has observed with dismay the heightened gang-up by political detractors within the current Government to completely tarnish the reputation of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The forum which rose from an emergency meeting in Warri, Delta State, Tuesday, fingered the Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi as being the arrowhead behind efforts to clampdown on former President Jonathan and his wife Patience Jonathan, with whom Mr. Amaechi has had a long history of political rivalry and conflict, respectively.

In a communique made available to the media, the group through its spokesman, Chief Comewell Derioteidou, urged President Buhari not to be further drawn into a conflict with the Niger Delta on the advice of enemies of the region, whose sole aim is political capital, but to see how amicable resolutions can be reached in order to douse escalated tensions and promote peace in the region.
The group expressed dismay that the statesmanship of the former President in conceding defeat voluntarily in spite of the many controversies surrounding the election is being mocked by the Nigerian nation and warned that the Niger Delta people will not sacrifice their own for Nigeria.

According to Chief Derioteidou, “Our people will not fold our arms and watch the good name of Jonathan destroyed by politicians. We have heard all sorts of amounts being bandied in the media against Jonathan’s wife and wonder why Abacha’s wife, YarAdua’s wife and the others who have universities in their name are not being subjected to the same scrutiny. Why is Jonathan being picked on? What are they afraid of? Did he not leave them with the power?”

The group further wondered why the Abachas who are renowned looters are enjoying clemency while leading voices of the Niger Delta are being clamped down.

“It portents danger for everyone,” the group added. “Crisis in the Niger Delta at this time of economic downturn is grave crisis for Nigeria. It is high time the attacks are put to an end. Amaechi and his buccaneers must know that they are not unknown to our people.” Chief Derioteidou maintained.

Alleged $15m fraud: EFCC docks ex-Jonathan’s aide, six others

A former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Warpamo Dudafa, on Thursday appeared before a Federal High Court, Lagos charged with 15 million dollars fraud.

Dudafa, a former Special Assistant on domestic affairs to the ex-president, is charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with six others.

The accused persons are charged on 15 counts bordering on conspiracy and fraud.

Others charged with Dudafa are Amajuoyi Briggs and Adedamola Bolodeoku.

Also on the charge sheet are four companies: Pluto Properties and Investment Company, Seagate Property Development Company, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Ltd, and Avalon Global Property Ltd.

When the case was called on Thursday, the four companies announced their representation as follows: Friday David (Pluto Properties and Investment Company) and Agbor Obaro (Sea Gate Property Development Company).
Also, Fredrick Dioghowori announced his representation for Trans Ocean Property Ltd, while Taiwo Ebenezer represented Avalon Global properties Ltd.
After the charges were read to the accused, the first, second and third accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Meanwhile, the four individuals representing the companies listed in the charge, each pleaded guilty to the offences.

Following the guilty plea of the companies, the EFCC prosecution led by Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, prayed the court to allow a short time for review of the facts, adding that he would not waste the time of the court.

The trial judge, Justice Babs Kuewumi, however, declined prosecution’s request and said he would adjourn the matter to a future date.
Meanwhile, counsel representing the second and third accused, Messrs Tochukwu Onyiuke, and Joseph Okebiemen, informed the court of a bail application filed on behalf of their clients, which had not been opposed.

They urged the court to admit the accused to bail on liberal terms.

Counsel representing the first accused, Mr Gboyega Oyewole, also informed the court that his client was already on bail on existing conditions granted by a brother judge.

He urged the court to allow his client enjoy same bail.

To this request of counsel, Kuewumi declined granting bail to the first accused and ordered him to file a formal application for bail before the court.

The court however, granted bail to the second and third accused in the sum of N250 million with one surety in like sum.

The judge added that the sureties must be owners of landed properties in Lagos, and if a public servant, such surety must produce a letter of introduction from his employer.

The judge also ordered the sureties to submit evidence of tax clearance.

He adjourned the case to Sept. 27 for continuation and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody pending perfection of their bail.

In the amended charge, the EFCC alleged that the accused between Nov. 13, 2013 and June 2015, used the different companies to commit the offences.

The accused were alleged to have conspired to retain over 15 million dollars, which sum they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of crime.

The alleged offences are said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 15 (d), 17(a), 18(a), and 27 (3) (c) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004.

The offences are said to have also contravened the provisions of sections 1(2) (c), and 1(19) (6) of the Miscellaneous Offence Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

It also contravened the provisions of sections 18 (a) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2012.

  • Jonathan’s wife sues EFCC, Skye Bank over frozen accounts

Jonathan’s wife sues EFCC, Skye Bank over frozen accounts

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience, has sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Skye Bank at the Federal High Court in Lagos over the freezing of her bank accounts.

She is demanding N200million in the fundamental rights enforcement suit.

Mrs. Jonathan said four of her frozen accounts with Skye Bank in the name of four companies have a balance of $15, 591,700.

An aide, Sammie Somiari, deposed to an affidavit on behalf of the former first lady.

EFCC reportedly placed a No Debit Order on the four accounts in July in the course of probing a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to Jonathan, Waripamo Dudafa.

The EFCC has filed an amended 17-count against Dudafa and seven others, including the four companies.

They were accused of conspiring to conceal $15, 591,700, which the EFCC claimed they ought to have known formed parts of proceeds of crime.

Somiari said Mrs. Jonathan was abroad for an urgent medical treatment.

The deponent said Dudafa helped Patience to open the four banks accounts which the EFCC froze.

He said Dudafa, on March 22, 2010 brought two Skye Bank officers, Demola Bolodeoku and Dipo Oshodi, to meet Patience at home to open five accounts.

The deponent claimed that Patience is the sole signatory to the accounts, adding that after the five accounts were opened, Mrs. Jonathan later discovered that Dudafa opened only one of the accounts in her name while the other four were opened in the names of companies belonging to Dudafa.

The four companies, whose accounts have now been frozen and charged with money laundering along with Dudafa are Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited; Seagate Property Development & Investment Co. Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Development Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited.

Somiari said: “The applicant (Mrs. Jonathan) complained about this to Honourable Dudafa, who at his prompting and instance promised to effect the change of the said accounts to the applicant’s name and to effect this change, Dudafa brought the said bank manager, Mr. Dipo Oshodi, who purported to have effected the changes. This was about April 2014.

“The applicant is not a director, shareholder or participant in the companies named in the aforementioned four accounts.

“The bank official, Mr. Dipo Oshodi, as it would appear did not effect or reflect the instruction of the applicant to change the said accounts to her name(s) despite repeated requests of the applicant.

“Besides, the ATM credit cards bearing the said companies’ names were brought to the applicant by Mr. Dipo Oshodi of the 2nd respondent bank, who promised to replace them once the cards bearing the changed names were available but he never did.

“However, since 2010 up until 2014 and thereafter, the applicant had been using the cards on the said accounts and operating the said accounts without let or hindrance.

“Even in May, June and July 2016, the applicant traveled overseas for medical treatment and was using the said credit cards abroad up until July 7, 2016 or thereabouts when the cards stopped functioning.”

In her fundamental rights action, Mrs. Jonathan is urging the court to compel the EFCC to immediately remove the No Debit Order placed on her accounts.

She also wants the court to order Skye Bank to pay her damages in the sum of N200m for what she termed a violation of her rights to own personal property under Section 44 of the Constitution.

The case has been adjourned till September 15.

  • Alleged security breach: Soldiers take over Jonathan’s cousin’s construction site

Alleged security breach: Soldiers take over Jonathan’s cousin’s construction site

A cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan is in fresh trouble for alleged security threat.

Armed soldiers yesterday sealed off the construction site of   Kakarta Civil Engineering Limited owned by Azibaola Robert for sharing a boundary with the Lungui Barracks of the Nigerian Army on the Kubwa/Asokoro Expressway, Abuja.

Azibaola, his wife, Stella and their firm are currently on trial over alleged payment of $40million into the bank account of one of their companies, One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited, by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The EFCC has traced the source of the $40million to a bank in London.

The cash was allegedly wired through Citibank N. A. Canada Square Canary, Wharf London E 145 LB into the account of One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited.

The $40million came from the account of the Special Services Office of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

It was gathered that the Kakarta Civil Engineering Limited site was allocated to Azibaola by the last administration.

The company is providing engineering infrastructure for the Maitama Extension District in Abuja.

The army, The Nation gathered yesterday, is uncomfortable with the site sitting so close to the Lungui Barracks.

The army is said to be particularly worried by the blasting of rocks and crushing of granite near the barracks, claiming that terror sect Boko Haram could take advantage of the site to attack the barracks.

Sources said that the administration of ex-President Jonathan ignored the fears raised by the army prior to the allocation of the land to the company and proceeded to give the go ahead following a strong recommendation from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The new official residences of the Senate President and some principal officers of the National Assembly as well as other highly-placed Nigerians are located in the affected Maitama Extension District in Abuja.

The site is being used as a base for the coordination of the provision of services for the owners of plots in the District.

Soldiers who were drafted to the site at about 8pm on Friday, sealed off the site yesterday, preventing workers from entering the construction site.

The soldiers said they were “acting on orders from above.”

A top military source said: “The truth is that the site was actually annexed from the land belonging to the Nigerian Army in violation of the FCT Master Plan.

“Lungi Barracks is just part of plans for military use of the land. Despite the fact that it is a military zone, the land was allocated to some bigwigs including Azibaola’s company (Kakarta Civil Engineering Limited).

“If you ask the management of the construction company, they will tell you that there had been issues on the site from the onset.

“For political reasons, the Jonathan administration approved that the site be converted from military use to other purposes.

“If you go to the site, you will see that it has grave security implications for Lungi Barracks. Each time there is a blast, it affects the military.

“The incessant blasting of rocks had forced soldiers to mobilise many times as if enemies were around.”

It was not clear on whose instruction the soldiers took over the site at press time.

One of the site workers, Mr. Maxwell Udom, alleged that no eviction notice was served on Kakarta Civil Engineering Limited.

Udom said:”We closed from work yesterday (Friday) peacefully. We came to work on Saturday to continue with our previous job only to see that the site had been invaded by armed military men.

“Their leader refused to explain what brought them here. He only warned us not to come close to the gate in our interest. We have no option than to obey the order. As I speak, we are confused on what led to this action.”

The Public Affairs Manager of Kakarta Civil Engineering Limited! Mr. Austin Ekeinde, admitted that the site was under soldiers’ siege.

He said: “I can confirm to you that armed military men have suddenly taken over our site in Maitama and we have asked our workers to go back to their respective homes till further notice, while we try to get clarification from the military on their provocative action.

“This action has led to huge losses as even asphalt we cooked overnight for laying this morning has been allowed to cake and waste.”

  • Count Jonathan out of avengers – Bayelsa elders

Count Jonathan out of avengers – Bayelsa elders

Elders from Bayelsa State, Monday, called on security agencies to investigate and arrest persons behind the linkage of former President Goodluck Jonathan to the notorious militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

The elders from Ogbia, Jonathan’s Local Government Area, asked security agencies to rise up to the occasion and apprehend economic saboteurs, vandals and militants in the Niger Delta region.

The elders under the aegis of Ogbia Brotherhood said it was unfair for anybody to sponsor a campaign of calumny against the former President.

Speaking in a press conference in Yenagoa, the state capital, the National Chairman of the group, Chief Benson Agadaga, described the allegations against Jonathan as dangerous, spurious and wild.

Also referring to persons behind the accusation as mischief makers and faceless group, Agadaga said the allegation was false, baseless, mischievous and wicked.

He urged the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) which made the allegation to look elsewhere for its uncanny campaign of calumny.

He said there was a criminal and devilish intention and cheap propaganda to rubbish the political status of the former president.

“It is unthinkable that the former President by an iota of imagination could be linked with sponsoring or even establishing an armed outfit like the Niger Delta Avengers to antagonize the Federal Government where he has just served as President by the goodwill of all Nigerians.

“May I add with unequivocal terms that the allegation lacks substance and does not bear true reflection or semblance to the nature, original beliefs and intent of the prominent son of Ogbia who holds the revered title as Grand Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, he said.

He described the former President as an embodiment of peace and stability, adding that from his antecedents, pedigree and actions, Jonathan was a firm believer in the sanctity of life and the unity and prosperity of Nigeria as an indivisible entity.

He said: “The Niger Delta cannot benefit anything by eliminating or frustrating Dr. Jonathan, our only national and international voice.

“Dr. Jonathan’s commitment to the sanctity of life is further demonstrated by the fact that throughout his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa state and as President of the country; there were no reported cases of extra-judicial killings and high profile assassinations.

“If MEND is in existence and wants to ‘emancipate’ the Niger Delta, as the name implies, then surely the right way to go is not through sinister moves to pull down and eliminate the divinely given and anointed personalities of their own region.”

He called on the attackers call to stop persecuting, blackmailing, mudslinging and campaigning against Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

  • President Goodluck Jonathan and corruption

    President Goodluck Jonathan and corruption

If I were President Jonathan, I would put a stop to these arranged lectures and talks until such a time my innocence would have been established

“Nigerians know that Buhari is not the architect of their pains, which he is doing everything  to stop by stemming the bleeding caused by the rapacious PDP.. Whenever the condition in which we have found ourselves is discussed, it should be stated  clearly that Buhari has got his teeth into clearing the mess of about 16 years during  which PDP chiefs, at our expense, led a rollercoaster champagne life that would make Hollywood greats green with envy. They lived like kings and partied like movie stars. Nigerians said “enough”, kicked them out and handed Buhari the mandate to demolish the edifice of vices built by fraudsters, pranksters and gangsters parading  as leaders. Now the rebuilding has begun. It will take some time and patience. –Gbenga Omotoso, Editor, The Nation, Thursday, 09.06.2016.

Looking at the duo of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Mrs. Patience Jonathan the other day, smooching, hugging and dancing azonto, one question that raced through my mind was: what do the Jonathan’s  now think of Obasanjo, the man who brought them fame, fortune and ultimately,  perdition? You do not need to have known former President Goodluck Jonathan up close to appreciate the fact that he was a perfect gentleman, neither  a Pharaoh nor a Nebuchadnezzar. But that was until Obasanjo, out of   his utter disdain for the duo  of  Ibrahim Babangida and Abubakar Atiku alongside the slew of Northerners keen on contesting for the presidency in 2011,  cajoled and  ended up railroading a quiet, peaceful and easy going  Jonathan into contesting the 2011 Presidential election, thus single-handedly tearing PDP’s zoning arrangement into tatters. The party recently attributed its  shellacking in the 2015 Presidential election,  majorly to that very  incident.

I have read and heard  a whole lot of Jeremiad coming  from  those the  new media describes as the wailing wailers.   I have read and listened to many say Buhari should stop whatever it is he is doing, pack, go and let corruption come back in all its fury, a wish God forbids.  As I often say in this column, I am not here to eulogise Buhari as I do have reservations  of my own about some of the things he did and those he left undone.  For instance his appointments have been mostly sectional, rather than inclusive.  Also, he ought, by now  to have given the Fulani herdsmen’s  menace  much more attention  than  just asking  the police and the army to handle it because  undisputed  research has shown that  some  top guns in these agencies are not uninterested parties.  The President, we pray,  will come back  from his 10-day leave much more invigorated. He should   therefore waste no more time in  frontally  and properly interrogating a problem that has left thousands of Nigerians  killed for nothing. Another area of my being ill at ease with the President is how, a full year into his administration, he  still sits  pretty  seeing the National Assembly  remain  a sink hole with legislators carting home multi-millions  quarterly  despite  the country’s  parlous  economic circumstances. This past week, we saw them self-eulogising and back slapping regardless of how  greatly Nigerians  have come to loathe them. These are people who awarded themselves ridiculously huge allowances which were not approved by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission. I think  the President should stop this illegality by whatever means he can , not minding the fact of the Legislature being a different arm of government since the appropriate government agency has  severally denied  approving such allowances. After all, the buck stops  at  his  table.

    I digress.

With  what Nigerians now know about the  Goodluck Jonathan era,  the  suffering  we are presently  experiencing   be it power, foreign exchange  etc and  which  the wailers  never stop shouting about,  even as they left a putrefying Augean stable  for Buhari to clear, would have  been  nothing but  a child’s play  had  the former President got re-elected. Indeed, by now,  Nigeria would have become  another Venezuela, that other  country where oil boom has turned oil doom  with its citizens queue-ing to have the lowest item needed for survival .  The signs were all there as the Jonathan government has started feeding Nigerians on a daily  diet of lies.  For instance, MrsOkonjo-Iweala was serially denying the fact  that Nigeria was broke even as they have already borrowed close to half a billion naira  to pay workers’ salaries.  President Jonathan lost the election but certainly not  for lack of trying. As Orubebe was busy ranting his inanities, tying to provoke Professor Jega, the INEC chairman,  in order to precipitate a situation where their goons would teargas everybody and stop the announcement of the election results, Diezeani’s  bribe money  for the purpose of  altering the  Presidential election results  nationwide  was going round every part of  the country. As God would have it, those to whom she shelled the money knew it was too little,  and too late as  Nigerians have  put an ignominious end to the era of lootocracy. Rather than part with the money,  most  simply held to their own share of the loot. Had Jonathan won, nobody  would have heard a whimper about this humongous amount of money sourced, illegally by Diezeani from her rogue accomplices in the oil industry which she had dominated like a colossus.

With daily breaking news about the heist  perpetrated under  his  nose , it is a shame  President Jonathan  is going round the world  trying to burnish his name  and claiming, tongue in cheek, that he fought corruption. So massive was the looting that his ministers  very easily  convinced him not to cooperate with the incoming administration  as a result of which he could only give his handing over notes to his  successor a  few days to his exit. By going out making those claims are we to assume that he is unaware of many of his men who have confessed to looting the treasury one way or the other? Did his cousin,   Robert Azibaola, just chanced on 40 Billion dollars  for a  contract  which the EFCC describes as dubious, for the supply  of  Tactical equipment for special forces but details of executing which it says does not exist? What of how  people around him turned a so-called negotiation for the release of  the Chibok girls to a casino? While regaling his audience in a speech at the Bloomberg studio in London claiming he fought corruption by not making money available to people, was it that he had not heard what Hassan Tukur, his Principal Secretary, was reported to have told the EFCC about the 40 Billion dollars  he, Jonathan, approved, and Azibaola picked from the office of the National Security Adviser which had  by then become an automatic teller machine, for the release of the Chibok girls? Is it possible the former President has  not heard that Tukur has confessed to diverting the money and sharing it with somebody? Or what corruption can be greater than authorising, as reportedly claimed by the National Security Adviser, the sharing of 2.1 Billion dollars meant for arms purchase for items not remotely  related to arms? And what about the millions of dollars raked in from oil crude sales which  should have gone to the federation account to relieve states,  but was diverted  and used by the  oil empress for the purpose of altering  the presidential election results?

If I were President Jonathan, I would put a stop to these arranged lectures and talks until such a time my innocence would have been  established. Or  hasn’t he just said he is being investigated?

Sir, this time around, silence will be golden.

Jonathan exempted APC states from N2billion ecological funds – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole on Thursday disclosed that All Progressives Congress (APC) states were exempted from the N2 billion ecological fund released to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) states by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, the last administration was discriminatory against some state governors in the distribution of bailout funds.

He spoke with State House correspondents at the end of governors’ meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In the face of the worsening state of the economy, Oshiomhole, however said that President Buhari has remained a rallying point for all state governments in the country irrespective of political affiliation.

He said: “We are very lucky to have President Buhari at this time. I have been here now for seven and half years and I have had the opportunity to work with three Presidents,  that is the truth.

“Under the last President it would have been impossible for us to approach Abuja to give us support because we have personal challenges. We have been given lectures on fiscal responsibility and all those kind of talks, even though the wastage was more here than any other place at that time.

“We have a President who recognises that he is not just President of the federal government he is the president of the federation of which the states are part and regardless of our political affiliation, this is very important, everybody is able to ask this President to give him support and he is giving.

“Whereas, in the recent past some PDP governors got N2 billion from ecology fund, we APC governors were not given.  But we promised to be different and I am happy this president is showing that difference,” he added.

On the new proposal for increase of minimum wage by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), he said that he always believe in a living wage for workers.

The governor said that he has been able to pay Edo State wor‎kers’ salaries despite the financial crunch because of his belief that their wages ranked high in terms of priorities for his government.

According to him, there was no need for him to borrow to pay salaries as he had increased revenue generation from taxing the wealthy more in the state.

Jonathan paid Metuh for image laundering – witness tells court

The spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh opened his defence Monday before the Federal High Court, Abuja after unsuccessful attempts to stall proceedings.

Last Friday, trial judge, Justice Okon Abang threw out a series of applications he filed on the ground that they were meant to stall proceedings.

The judge adjourned to Monday, warning him to open his defence in the case, failing which he will forfeit the opportunity.

Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited are being tried before the court for unlawfully receiving N400m from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and allegedly engaging in money laundering.

Monday, rather than commence his defence as directed by the judge at the last hearing, Tochukwu Onwugbufo (SAN), who announced appearance for Metuh’s company, began a long argument on why the court should adjourned proceedings on the ground that he was new in the case.

Justice Abang, in a ruling, rejected his oral application for adjournment and ordered Metuh to open his defence by calling his witnesses, an order Metuh’s lawyer; Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) complied with by calling Metuh’s first witness, Ike Ogbonna.

Ogbonna, who said he had worked as a journalist, starting with the defunct Triumph newspaper, through the Champion newspaper, New Telegraph (as a Deputy Managing Director) and ended as with Thisday newspaper, from where he was appointed as Media Adviser to former National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Okwesileze Nwodo.

He gave details how Metuh was paid by former President Goodluck Jonathan for the publicity activities he carried out for the PDP during the run off to the last general election.

“I know Olisa Metuh. While I was Media Adviser at the PDP national secretariat, I met Olisa Metuh close, although I have been hearing of him.

When I came to the party, he was the National Vice Chairman, South East. Since I also came from the South East, Metuh was part of the team set up by the then National Chairman to reposition the image of the party. That assignment brought us together. To the extent that when I returned to the newsroom, I remained in contact with Metuh, who was with the party.

He called me and said that he is not a media person, but his new role involved media activities.

And that by virtue of my experience and relationship with the party, he was going to rely on me, and that he did, consulting me on virtually every issue, even though I was not directly working for him.

Dr. Nwodo engaged a PR firm called CMC Connect. Which help Dr. Nwodo packaged his programme of improving the image of the party.

Since Metuh was part of Dr. Nwodo’s team, he also came in contact with CMC Connect.

Soon after his election as Assistant Publicity Secretary, he called me to arrange with CMC Connect to meet with him. This I did and the Managing Director of CMC Connect, Mr. Yomi Badejo came with his team, which met with Metuh and some officials of the Publicity Directorate of the party.

He appealed to the consulting firm that he would want them to return and continue from where they stopped when Dr.Nwodo was there.

The firm said it was willing to return, but that the party was owning them. Metuh promised to push a case for them at the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.

Following their presentation at the meeting, Metuh said he will engage them. But as at that time, there were no resources to engage them. He promised to get back to them if he gets resources from the party.

Eventually, towards the end of 2014, Metuh approached me, where I was the Deputy Managing Director of the New Telegraph newspapers, and requested that he will need my full services this time.

“He said he will like if I can come into the party as a consultant to help him on the new challenge of improving the image of the party, which he said, was in a bad shape, and by his position, all eyes were on him to come up with strategies to shore up the image of the party, ahead of the general elections.

“That was at the point I left the New Telegraph to join him for the purposes of addressing the challenge he spoke about. He told me CMC Connect would be needed. I told him CMC Connect is too expensive, and that we can work with smaller PR firms, but he insisted on CMC Connect, saying the assignment was enormous and that he would rather go for the best.

“When I told him about the issue of funding, he said the general election was coming and that the issue of lack of money in his department would soon be a thing of the past, because the leader of the party, who was the President of Nigeria, will have no choice than to fund his department.

“The main consideration for involving CMC Connect was the quality of their services. In addition to quality, the party was owing CMC Connect, and Metuh has promised to pay them. He also made a commitment to them (CMC Connect) that when funding comes, they would be considered first.

“Even when I tried to lure Metuh out of CMC Connect, so that we can use other firms, he reminded me that he had made a commitment and will not like to go against it.

We eventually called CMC Connect to join a team of other journalists and some politicians, where Metuh told us that he has been given an assignment by the leader of the party, then President Goodluck Jonathan to come up with a strategy that will help the party win the forthcoming general election.

“Metuh told us that the assignment given to him, was also given to some other professionals. And that we should see it as a challenge and make sure that our own strategy will prevail in the choice that the party’ leadership and the President will make.

“The team anchored by CMC Connect, prepared some strategies and after testing and rehearsals, with Metuh presiding in most of the meetings, we all agreed that we had a good product to present. And Metuh said we should wait for clearance from the Presidential Villa, the seat of power, for a date for the presentation.

“One afternoon, he came to me that he has just received a call from the National Chairman of the party, Adamu Muazu, that the President will be ready for the presentation that night.

“All the other members of the team were resident in Abuja, except CMC Connect, which was based in Lagos. We called its Managing Director, Yomi Badejo to take the next available flight to Abuja for the presentation. Because he was already expecting the day of the appointment for the presentation, he took the next available flight and arrived Abuja at about 6pm.

“When we arrived at the Presidential Villa, it was only Metuh’s car that was allowed to enter. But he and Metuh waited for us at the security clearing area. After the clearance, we were ushered into a waiting room.

Metuh left us and entered into an inner room. 15 minutes later, Metuh came to call us. And we entered a very large parlour, with the President sited, with the Vice President, Senate President and the National Chairman of PDP and the then Governrs of Cross River and Anambra states and some media aides of the President, including Dr. Reuben Abati, Doyi Okupe.

“We sat down. Then the Presidnet said, ‘Olisa where are your men,? He called us and the MD of CMC Connect was the first to speakfrom our team. He wnt in with a projector and demonstrated most of the strategies we had in mind.

“After the presentation, the President requested for comments from other members of the team. And after our comments, he said jokingly that we were too hard on him, because virtually all, who spoke in our team told him that his image was in a bad shape and that he himself was not helping the matter the way he was handling it.

“At a point Reuben Abati, the President’s Media Adviser, who saw our presentation as an indictment on him, told the President that the situation was not as bad as we tried to portray. But the President overruled him.

“After the presentation, the President asked for comment from those sitting with him. And most of the speakers made positive remarks and that they were impressed with what we presented.

“The Office of the Media Adviser also did a presentation. Dr. Doyin Okupe, the Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs, and other professionals brought in by party and government officials, made their own presentations too.

“Ultimately, given the comments of people that were sitting with the president, I recalled vividly, the comment of former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, who told the President that, if what this team presented can be put into action, they should be quickly mobilised because if nothing is done immediately before the President started campaign, it would be difficult to win the election, given the public perception of him and his government at that time.

“The President then said, since there appeared that to be the consensus of the people with him them, that Metuh and his team, did a better job, he would advise that all the others should collapse into Chief Metuh’s team, because he would want the consultant to provide the direction.

“At that point, the President told Chief Metuh that he has done a good job, but that the real job is still out there to put all these into action and told him to bring a corporate account to him for immediate mobilisation and action,” Ogbonna said.

When asked if he knew how the Office of the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, headed by Metuh was funded, Ogonna said “the extent that I operated as Media Adviser there and as a political journalist that is familiar with political activities, I am aware that the funding of the Office of the National Publicity Secretary come mainly from the party and the leader of the party, who happened to be President Goodluck Jonathan at the time,” Ogbonna said.

Under cross-examination by the prosecution lawyer, Ogbonna said he was not privy to the source of the money paid for the job they did, but “Chief Metuh told me that the President called him and said the money had been paid. I was no paid as an individual.

Further hearing resumes on April 20.
