  • ‘Insurgency sign of end times’

The General Overseer of the Wuse District of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Reverend Babatunde Idowu, has described the waves of insurgency blowing in the North eastern part of Nigeria and other countries of the world as a sign of the end time.

He, however, advocated fervent prayers and spiritual intercessions by religious leaders as a way out of the crises.

Idowu who urged President Goodluck Jonathan not to be deterred in carrying out his agenda for the country said the Church will continue to support him to “surmount the thick darkness and insurgency surrounding the country.

“Nigerians should continue to seek God’s face, they should not relent in praying and have hope that one day, peace shall return to the country,”he said

Speaking on the week-long transfiguration programme of the church which ended last week, the General Overseer said the programme with the theme, “positioned for glory” is aimed at winning more souls to Christ and giving hopes to Nigerians despite the various challenges confronting them.

“The week of transfiguration programme is designed to give worshipers the opportunity to pray and intercede and to also involve in personal ministration while seeking the face of God”he said

The programme featured  praises, evangelistic prayer meeting and anointing service for all members of the church for divine protection as the year draws to an end.

  • PDP will win all south-south states in 2015, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has  maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will win in all the South-south states in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

He made the remark at the Unity Rally of the party on Saturday  held in Benin, Edo state.

According to him, the zone used to be for the ruling party until recently when it lost Edo and Rivers states to the opposition.

He said “in the South-south at the beginning of this democracy in 1999, we know the whole region was PDP, but today two states are out. But from 2015 to 2016, we will get all our states back.

“Edo state has returned to the PDP. In Rivers state, the opposition exists only on billboards, the state belongs to the PDP. So, allow their billboards to stay. We know the party that is controlling Rivers state. All what we need is unity.”

He warned party members who are interested in contesting for one position or the other to be cautious and exercise restraints in their activities so as not to injure the unity of the party in the course of pursuing their personal ambitions.

“We are here for unity rally in Edo state; we are not here for campaigns. We would come back for campaigns. We are here for unity rally because we must bring all our members together, especially now that elections are coming. Elections are coming, we have different interests.

“So, we use this platform to appeal to our people at every level of election that so many people would be interested in these positions, but only one person would go at a time. But, we belong to the same party. So, when we are struggling to get to these positions, we should be careful so that we don’t create enemies for ourselves,” he said.

Jonathan also told the party supporters projects executed by his administration including the rehabilitation and construction of roads with the commissioning of Benin-Ofosu road in the state.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, in his remarks, challenged the opposition to bring out their best candidates to slug it out with Jonathan at the 2015 Presidential election since the party had decided to hand its ticket to the President.

“Recently, all strata of our party decided to endorse our President as the candidate of our party. What is intriguing to me is that the opposition of our government were proving they know our constitution more than us. I advise them to shut up and mind their business.

“Let’s see how they go about their own. For us, we have decided. It is up to you (opposition) to bring up your best to come into competition with ours. I want to assure you that the PDP is the party to beat,” Mu’azu boasted.

Jonathan seeks urgent UN reforms against insecurity

*Says Nigeria working hard to free Chibok girls

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday maintained that pressing challenges to global peace and security have made it imperative that urgent action be taken on the reformation of United Nations Security Council.

He made the call while delivering Nigeria’s annual statement to the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, United States of America.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, President Jonathan also called for an urgent review of United Nations peacekeeping operations across the world.

He sad: “Mr. President, the failure of unanimity of action by the Security Council over pressing challenges to global peace and security, in Syria, Iraq, the conflict in Ukraine, and the renewed aggression between Israel and Palestine, have strengthened the case for the reform of the Security Council.”

“Today’s challenges can only be resolved by a Security Council whose working methods engender transparency, inclusivity, and common ownership through equitable representation of all regions in the decision making process of the Council.”

“It is imperative that we take advantage of 2015, which also marks the 50thAnniversary of the 1965 reform, to make concrete progress on the reform of the Council.”

“We call for a fast-tracked process, in line with the initiative of His Excellency John Ashe, President of the 68th General Assembly, for establishing a working Group on reform. Indeed, the Security Council requires the collective resolve of all member states to ensure that 2015 brings decisive progress,” he added

Noting that the United Nations was established about 70 years ago to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, he said that the world sadly continues to experience conflict and human suffering.

Jonathan said: “Today’s terrorism is vicious and aimless. Its consequences are extremely agonizing, marked by a tendency to annihilate victims, and completely destroy infrastructure and properties. The involvement of foreign fighters has remained a common feature of terrorist groups – whether Al Qaeda in the Maghreb, Al Shaabab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria, or the newly emerging Islamic State (I.S).”

“The new dimension introduced by I.S. to conquer territory and establish its destructive ideology, is a major challenge that must be collectively halted before it becomes the norm. This refocuses attention on the need to review present tools for United Nations peacekeeping operations,” he said.

The President assured the gathering that the Federal Government will continue to do everything possible to rescue the abducted Chibok girls and  curb  the violent and criminal activities of Boko Haram.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the countries and organizations that expressed solidarity with us, and have continued to support our determined efforts to free our daughters.”

“Although it has been over three months since they were abducted, we have never relented in our efforts to set them safely free. Together with our partners, we are working assiduously to free our daughters and reunite them with their families.”

“Let me underline today, that we shall not waiver until we end this mindless war on the innocent, and bring all the perpetrators to justice. We will triumph over terrorism,” Jonathan stated.

Moving on to the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus disease in West Africa, the President confidently assured the United Nations that Nigeria is now free of Ebola, but said that the world must act in unison to stop the disease from becoming a global disaster.

He said: “While Nigeria was able to respond effectively to control the spread of the disease, the situation in Liberia and Sierra Leone requires sustainable, collective global action to contain. Through the concerted efforts of our healthcare professionals, the World Health Organisation and our international partners, we have been able to contain the EVD and we can confidently say that Nigeria is today, Ebola-free.”

“We have however continued to support efforts at containing the spread of the disease in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. It is pertinent to stress the need for the international community to properly appreciate the enormity of the EVD challenge.”

“Indulging in isolationist and discriminatory tendencies will only worsen an already critical situation. To prevent the disease from becoming a global catastrophe, the UN must accord it the concerted effort it deserves,” the President said.

He concluded the statement by reaffirming Nigeria’s belief in  the indispensable role of the UN in the global bid to overcome the challenges of conflict, terrorism, climate change and economic development.

“We have been, and will remain a reliable and active partner, especially as we collectively work to resolve the new and emerging threats to global peace and security,” President Jonathan told the assembly of Heads of State and Government.

  • Federal Govt to sign Mambilla Dam contract

President Goodluck Jonathan will sign the Mambilla Hydro Dam contract next month.

The Minister of State for Power, Mr. Mohammed Wakil, who spoke at a rally of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) in Gombe, said: “President Goodluck Jonathan has broken the jinx of the Mambilla Hydro Dam, which is worth about seven billion dollars.”

He added that the Kashambilla Hydro Dam has reached about 95 per cent completion. “This is in addition to the new transmission lines across the zone.”

The minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Olawale Rasheed, who spoke yesterday in a statement, said the dam would generate over 3,000 mega watts and was about the biggest on the continent.

“This project has been on the drawing board since 1970.”

Wakil described President Jonathan’s record in the power sector as unrivalled in the history of the country, saying the Northeast was grateful for the power projects in the region.

He said: “Jonathan has implemented the most ambitious and very successful power sector reform in Africa. Major international agencies have acknowledged this fact.” The minister toured the sites of the power projects in Borno State. Despite insecurity, he visited a sub-station on Baga Road in Maiduguri where a newly-approved transformer would be located.

He also visited the site of the 330KV transmission sub-station on Damboa Road. Work was suspended at the site due to insecurity.  Wakil said work would resume after the tightening of security at power installations in the state.

  • Putrid flesh served a la carte

Putrid flesh served a la carte

For the Goodluck Jonathan administration, it does not just rain; it simply pours. For Nigerians, the best way to describe current flight of public morality across the board is perhaps to borrow from Obi Okonkwo, the main character in No longer At Ease. His characterisation of decadence being served with putrid flesh in the spoon is apt. From Modu Sheriff, to the seizure $9.3 million by the South African authorities and now, the Synagogue affair, the presidency is proving to be the most accident-prone in the world.

It seems unlikely that most Nigerians gave much thought to President Goodluck Jonathan’s widely publicised visit to the Synagogue Church of Nations (SOCAN) on Saturday. With more than four score souls – most of them nationals of South Africa – confirmed to have perished by the close of last week, ordinarily, it would be hard to question the judgment which informed the President breaking off from his busy schedule for a formal, if merely, symbolic visit.

In order words, while it could be argued that the presidential visit amounted to nothing beyond its symbolism, it takes nothing from the exalted office that the president saw the need for the visit having earlier arrived town for his party event.

The first problem is what the President chose to do with the visit. To start with, it’s hard to miss the import of the photo-op session with TB Joshua, splashed on the pages of newspapers, a day after when body counts were still on-going. That – if you ask me – was a barely disguised politicisation of tragedy by the supposed mourner in chief. I have not even here passed judgment of what appears to me, as derogation from the stature of the number office as symbol of our collective morality which the outing represented.

The second problem is the destination of the visit. With Deputy Governor Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire in tow, the president’s party could be excused of throwing protocol to the dogs. But then, we are talking of a presidential visit to a disaster scene, not a solidarity visit to a religious leader. The president should have known the difference between the two. Whether or not the state government is involved does not matter: they ought to know better – that is, if they were.

That leads us to the composition of the welcome party.  I do not shy from saying that the dictates of public policy requires that TB Joshua be kept from the president’s sight. The scores of federal and state officials on ground should ordinarily suffice without the president’s presence. In any case, one sees nothing in the trip that a call at the governor’s office would not achieve by far.

By the way, what message does the President seek to convey by the solidarity visit to the party under investigation – is it that the key ’culprit’ is his friend?

Let me be clear: I do not think that anyone has dared to presume Joshua or anyone for that matter, guilty of any offence. It goes beyond saying, however, that the leadership of the church have some explaining to do in the circumstance that some of the structures in the church, including the one which came down, were alleged to have been modified after the initial approval granted by the government. That is if we grant the criminal obtrusiveness of members of the church to the rescue efforts at the onset of the tragedy.

Between the state government and the church, the judgement of how either handled the crisis is a matter of opinion. Perhaps, it is just as well that several theories – including those of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and terrorist attacks – are already flying in the air. In the past week, we have seen partisans go on frenzy, rolling out one rationalisation after another to explain why a structure originally designed to carry two floors should bear the weight of four. Perhaps, all of that are to be expected in what remains of our pre-industrial world of gnomes and superstition.

The truth of course is that the handling of the Synagogue tragedy by the state government leaves so much to be desired. For while Lagos can claim to be the clear leader in disaster management, the incident reveals a new face of institutional paralysis, the lack of abiding standard in the application of the law that would ordinarily be considered unthinkable in the Centre of Excellence.

Admittedly, the state government did not operate in vacuum. If anything, the state government is only too aware of the on-going atavistic politics as 2015 presidential politics hits the home run. Call it therefore practical politics that the state government has been somewhat tame in its response to the point of being impotent. As it stands, the judgment about whether the nation is better or worse for it is only a matter of time.

I return to the point of that visit by President Jonathan. And what did the visit achieve? It’s worse than nothing. In fact, it is injurious to the cause of institution-building. More than that, it offends public morality.

And what did the President promise?  He vowed to investigate the cause of the collapse of the six-storey building – a job he should ordinarily know – belongs to the state government!

Next, he promised that the federal government “will deploy the machinery to ensure that investigations into the collapse were treated speedily”. How? Where is the point of intersection between presidential directives with that of a state bureaucracy? The usual politics of opportunism?

And finally, the President promised to convene a meeting with state governors to discuss the need for advice or measures that will check illegal erection of high-rise buildings”. Couldn’t there be a better forum to announce the meeting of the governors than the very scene of disaster under investigation?

To the main point. I have no idea why our Presidential handlers would find nothing untoward in dragging the President – supposedly the symbol of public morality – into the needless session. If you ask me; I’ll just say that it’s partly to be explained by the free-fall in public morality across the board.

That to me is the only way to explain how a luxury jet said to have been procured to serve the cause of the gospel would be entangled in a money laundering mess in a foreign soil. Soon enough, we will know Jonathan’s real friends.

  • Intrigues as PDP chieftains, others scramble for Jonathan campaign jobs

Intrigues as PDP chieftains, others scramble for Jonathan campaign jobs

There is a big scramble among chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders over who handle the re-election campaign of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Nation gathered that the huge financial war chest that has been earmarked for the campaign is responsible for this intense jostling by politicians within the PDP, members of some opposition parties who are sympathetic to the re-election of Jonathan, some unnamed businessmen and technocrats.

In the Southwest, sources say there is a stiff rivalry among party leaders including the governor-elect of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose; a PDP chieftain, Chief Olabode George; chairman, South West Mobilisation Committee, Buruji Kashamu and Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, over who takes charge Jonathan’s 2015 campaign in the zone.

The struggle was so fierce until recently when Jonathan allegedly told a gathering of PDP leaders in the South West that Fayose is the key to the party’s success in the zone.

Jonathan reportedly stated this in Abuja at a meeting chaired by George at the Presidential Villa. According to reports, the group had met the president to discuss how to take charge of the campaign structure and funds in the zone ahead of the 2015 elections.

Sources said plans to appoint a director general for the group was allegedly turned down by the president, who explained that such a move could cause confusion within the party in the zone.

“These people who cannot even win their polling units want to compete with a man who defeated sitting governors on two occasions,” an ally of the Ekiti governor-elect said.

But in spite of the alleged knocks to its plans, the Bode George group is said to be unrelenting in their bid to get the job. To further strengthen its base, the group recently recruited former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel and former speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, into its fold.

“With Bankole and Daniel as additional selling points, we will approach the president and let him know we are the ones who can get him the votes across the states in the Southwest. This is not about ego; it is about getting the job done and ensuring the victory of our party in 2015,” Lanre Collins, a chieftain of the party in Ogun West said.

In the Southeast, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi’s name is being mentioned as the right man to lead Jonathan’s campaign, even as there are indications that Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, wife of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, is also being considered.

Our sources disclosed that Bianca’s interest in the Jonathan 2015 campaign may have prompted her latest bid to reconcile the warring factions in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

But a presidency said Ojukwu’s interest in the job is an afterthought, as she had earlier supported the choice of Obi for the same assignment.

In the North Central zone, there are unconfirmed reports that the Niger State governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu and PDP National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Yusuff Ayitogu, are allegedly scheming to head the president’s re-election team in the zone.

While Aliyu is banking on his new found closeness to the Presidency to corner the job, Ayitogu is said to be the preferred choice of the party leaders in the zone given his track record as a team player and mobiliser.

The scramble for Jonathan’s re-election campaign job is not limited to the chieftains of his party alone.

Recent statements credited to the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali revealed that there are over 8, 000 pro-Jonathan groups across the country.

Among the groups include the Goodluck Support Group (GSG), founded by the former Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak. Following his sack by President Goodluck Jonathan in May, his former deputy, Eddy Olafeso, became the leader of the group.

The National Consolidation Group (NCG), established by Mr. Ajon Ugboho, is another pro-Jonathan body that has been mobilising support for the President across the country.

There is also Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) reportedly backed by Senator Ifeanyi Uba, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, among others.

The Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, sources say, has also launched a group named Believe Nigeria, Trust Goodluck (BNTG) to campaign for the re-election of the President.

The National Coordinator of the group is Mr. Idris Usman, who won the best state coordinator of the defunct Neighbour To Neighbour (N to N), which worked for President Goodluck Jonathan’s election in 2011.

There are also the Protectors of Nigerian Posterity (PNP) and Friends of Goodluck which is headed by Tom Itua.

Even outside the shores of the country, the struggle for Jonathan’s campaign job is tense. In Spain, Jennifer Alawari Okechi Diorgu, an aesthetician and cosmetologist, is being challenged for the job by Jolaoluwa Aderinokun, the President of the nNigerian Community in the country.

•To meet with governors over building collapse

TO check incessant building collapse, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday said he would soon call a meeting of all the 36 state governors in order to take policy decisions on raising high rise buildings in the country.

The policy decisions, he said, will prevent use of defective structures in buildings, strengthening regulations concerning high rise buildings, among others.

He spoke in Lagos at the scene of the collapsed six-storey building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), situated in Ikotun, where about 84 persons were said to have died and many others sustained various degrees of injury.

Describing the situation as “very sad story and very sad incident”, he expressed condolences to the Church members, the Head of the Church, Prophet T. B. Joshua and those who lost their dear ones in the incident.

He also condoled with the South African people and the President, Jacob Zuma, whom he said he had already spoken with to extend the nation’s condolences.

He said: “Today when I arrive Lagos, my first port of call was where a six storey building collapsed and 80 people confirmed dead, about 131 people were injured.

“It is a very sad story, very sad incident to us and the international community because most of the people that died in that building collapse were not Nigerians, in fact a majority of them are South Africans.

“I spoke to the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma to first express our own sentiments and condolences to the President and people of that country.”

On the collapse of the church, Prophet T B Joshua, alleged that the collapse of the building was caused by an attack on the Church and that it wasý beyond the allegation of structural defects.

He had alleged that a plane circulated four times before the build suddenly collapsed at exactly 12.44 pm.

The South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, was reported to have said that there could be more than 84 South Africans who died in the incident.

President Jonathan yesterday also assured the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Highness, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu I, ýthat the Federal Government would not relent in its infrastructural development programmes, maintenance of peace and security in the country.ý

Jonathan, who defied the heavy down pour in Lagos, spoke at the Palace of the Oba of Lagos while on a courtesy visit to Oba Akiolu 1, before attending the scheduled South-West zonal rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Tafawa Belewa Square, yesterday.

He expressed gratitude to the Oba and His Council of Chiefs for the warm reception always accorded him each time he was in the palace, noting that royal fathers are custodians of land and the nation, and that he would not be in Lagos without coming to pay homage to the Oba to receive royal blessings and prayers.

According to him, Lagos State is key to the economy of Nigeria and assured that the Federal government was committed to ensuring that nothing negative happens to the state.

He recalled that this informed the reason why the Government rose to the challenge against the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the state in partnership with the Governor, Babatunde Fashola.

He thanked the Oba of Lagos on how he has been rendering service to the State and nation as Oba and while he was in service as a police officer.

He said: “I thank you for the warm reception you always give to me each time I had been here, I can’t even remember how many times.

“We thank you for the service you have been rendering right from when you were in service as a police officer, and now as the Oba of Lagos.

“We must make sure that we don’t have anything that will affect the economy of Lagos. We assure you that we will continue to do our best in infrastructure development of the country and maintenance of peace and security in the country,” he said

He told the Oba that he was in the state for the PDP South-West unity rally meant to bring together the members of the partyý together, adding that he will still come for campaign in future.

He said: “We are here for unity rally, we are not here for campaign but we will still come. We are here to bring the members of the party in the South-West together.

“First, before we go, we came to tell you that we are in your domain and kingdom. We need your royal prayers and blessings because you (traditional rulers) are the owners of the land.”

Responding, Oba of Lagos, Oba Akiolu who noted that leadership is given to anybody by the Almighty God, prayed that God will be with President Jonathan and protect him to realise his vision for the country.

He urged for free and credible election in Lagos and Nigeria during the 2015 general stressing that God knows what is best for the country.

The Oba who expressed his special love for President Jonathan said, “I have special love for Mr. President. Leadership is bestowed on any person by the Almighty God. God put you in that positioný.”

“God will be with you, God will not abandon you,” he said

Despite the current security challenges, he said: “God will bring it to an end” as he advised that there should be special policies for handling security issues.

He assured the president that God would assist him as he appealed to him to ýcontinue doing whatever he needs to do for Lagos state, not minding politics.

  • PDP BoT endorses Jonathan as sole presidential candidate

PDP BoT endorses Jonathan as sole presidential candidate

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday night endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party for the forthcoming 2015 election.

The endorsement came few hours after the PDP Governors Forum led by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, endorsed Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the BoT meeting in the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, the former Minister of Information and chieftain of the party, Prof. Jerry Gana said that the Trustees are pleased with the way Jonathan has been steering the ship of state.

Towards the forthcoming convention of the party, he said that the BoT will continue to persuade members of the party to support Jonathan for the election.

Gana, who was flanked by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and the Secretary of the BoT, Walid Jubril, also disclosed that the BoT approved the party’s timetable for its primaries and electoral guidelines for the party’s primaries.

But he said that the timetable and the guidelines will have to be approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday before made public at a press conference at the PDP Headquarters in Abuja.

Disclosing that Akpabio had informed the BoT meeting of the unanimous resolution of all the PDP governors to make President Goodluck  Jonathan as the sole and unopposed candidate of the party, he said: “They resolved that no PDP governor will be interested to vie for the office of President.”

Gana specifically noted that the Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, also approved the candidacy of President Jonathan as he had called his Deputy on phone to sign the document endorsing Jonathan for the position during the PDP Governors’ meeting in Abuja.

He said that a document signed by all the PDP governors on the resolution will be presented to the President at another forum.

On the criticism of the party by the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, he noted that the governor has benefited immensely under the party before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“If anybody has the right to criticise the PDP, it is not the governor of Kano State if he is a man of integrity.” He stated

The BoT secretary commended all members of the PDP nationwide.

Ekweremadu said that democracy is part and parcel of the PDP and that the freedom of expression guaranteed by the administration was what enabled Kano State governor to freely criticise.
