Protest against plans to scrap Sure-P in Ebonyi

Beneficiaries of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) in Ebonyi State have protested against calls that the programme should be scrapped.

The programme was initiated by President Goodluck Jonathan last year to alleviate the suffering of the people.

Some of the beneficiaries, mostly youths, young widows and disabled persons, who condemned the call, said those agitating that the programme be scrapped were those who cared less about the welfare of the masses.

They spoke yesterday in Abakaliki, saying the programme had reduced their dependence on their family.

Their spokesperson, Mrs. Ifunanya Onwe, described the call as unfair.

She said: “As a widow with six children, I know what I have gone through just to feed my family. Some of my children were out of school before I was given this SURE-P job.

“The campaign against crime would not be achieved if the hundreds of youths earning N10,000 monthly are asked to go home. We plead with Presiden.t Jonathan to ignore the calls.”

She urged the minister of Labour and Productivity to constantly monitor the states and remove any corrupt chairman or coordinator.

Kwankwaso: we won’t welcome Jonathan to Kano

Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso said yesterday that residents will not welcome President Goodluck Jonathan today.

The governor, who spoke in Kano, said the President has done nothing to improve the standard of living, since he assumed office.

Kwankwaso said: “I regret voting for Jonathan in 2011. He has not done anything to move the nation forward.

“Only a few people are enjoying in Nigeria and this is at the expense of other citizens.

“We are still waiting to hear the truth about the alleged missing funds, which led to the suspension of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

“If someone alleges that N20 million is missing in one of our ministries, I will investigate the matter and if I find the allegation to be true, I must praise the person for a job well done and then take appropriate action.”

He urged the electorate to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, saying the APC is the most powerful party in Africa.

Kwankwaso accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of buying members over, saying the APC has taken measures to tackle the issue.

The governor appealed to APC supporters to be patient as the party has set up necessary machinery, which would ensure its victory in 2015.

He said those calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to conduct elections in the Northeast have lost focus.

  • Conference delegates urge Jonathan to end terrorism

Conference delegates urge Jonathan to end terrorism

Delegates to the ongoing National Conference have expressed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Reacting to the bomb blast that killed several people yesterday morning in Nyanyan, Abuja, the delegates urged President Goodluck Jonathan to take drastic steps to arrest the perpetrators and end the insurgency.

They also urged the President to implement the recommendations of two panels which examined the security challenges confronting the country.

The panels recommended the prosecution of some politicians indicted as masterminds and sponsors of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Condemning the suicide bombing in Nyanyan, the delegates, who observed a minute silence in honour of the dead, called for the rehabilitation, reconsideration and reconstruction of all areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

The decision of the delegates followed the adoption of the prayers of a motion moved by Dan Nwanyanwu, Labour Party (LP) leader, and Ishaq Kawu, a media representative.

Nwanyanwu said: “I think there is conspiracy against Nigeria and Nigerians. But there must be an enemy within. I want this conference to call on security agencies to take more immediate and urgent steps to deal with these insurgents forthwith so that Nigerians will not be dying like chickens.”

he said. On his part, Kawu regretted that security situation in the country has been plummeted in the last five years, adding that  violence has escalated in the Northeast despite the state of emergency that was imposed almost a year ago. He therefore tasked the government to embark on reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas.

  • We’ll soon get over insurgency, says Jonthan

We’ll soon get over insurgency, says Jonthan

President Goodluck Jonathan vowed yesterday to do everything possible to end the insurgency that has shaken Nigeria to its roots.

He spoke after being conducted round the blast site in Nyanya on the outskirts of Abuja, where scores died in an early morning suicide bombing. Boko Haram is temporary and that Nigeria would overcome.

Dr. Jonathan, with whom was Senate President David Mark, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Adamu Muazu and National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki condoled with the families of those who died. He directed that the best medical services be given to the injured. He also ordered tight security around the city.

Jonathan visited some of the victims at the Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja. He was conducted round the emergency wards by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Abubakar Adamu.

At the scene of the attacks, the President said: “You can see that I’m here with the Senate President, David Mark and Chairman of PDP, ministers, CDS and service chiefs, and all other very senior government functionaries. Let us collectively express our condolences to the families of those who suffered directly on the incident.

“I am also commending security services for their prompt action. Though we lost quite a number of people, we condole with our countrymen and women. We will continue to work very hard.”

He went on: “The issue of Boko Haram is temporary. Government is doing everything to make sure that we move our country forward, in spite of all the distractions that want to take us backward. We promise that we will get over it.

“We also want to use this unique opportunity to plead with the media and our great men and women to come up with enlightenment programme for our people. Those countries that face terror, they have developed great awareness. If there are unusual movement of vehicles and bags, they call security and based on this a lot of incident are contained.

“So, we believe that if people will become observant and all of us become security conscious by the movement of people, we will be able to reduce some of these incident.”

“We will do our best; the security services will continue to work very hard. God willing, we will get over it. The issue of Boko Haram is temporary; surely we will get over it.” He stated

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, posted on his Twitter Account: “Jonathan saddened by loss of lives in Nyanya bombing. Ordered heightened security in Abuja following the incident. Jonathan extends his heartfelt condolences to bereaved families. Direct medical services to do their best to save lives.”

At the Asokoro General Hospital, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Amodu Abubakar, confirmed that close to 30 bodies were at the hospital’s mortuary while 25 injured were receiving treatment.

He said: “We have around 27 to 30 dead here and about 25 victims are receiving treatment here. We only have problem of population that are trying to check for their loved ones. However, we are coping with everything here.”

At the National Hospital, 16 of the victims were confirmed dead. 47 are being treated for injuries.

There were 14 bodies at Maitama Hospital, which had 27 seriously injured persons on admission. Three persons in critical conditions were referred to the National Hospital.

Among the three referred was a man who was bleeding profusely from around the neck. The doctors battled to stop the bleeding to no avail. At a point, some of the medical personnel attending to him raised their hands in hopelessness before he was wheeled away.

A ten-month-old girl survived the blast. The baby, whose mother died survered bruises on her right hand.

She was taken to the Asokoro Hospital.

At the Wuse Hospital, our reporters counted 15 bodies. Seven injured were on admission.

The bodies were burnt, some beyond recognition. They were packed in body bags, but their faces were opened for identification.

The bodies were laid at the entrance of the mortuary and opened for families and friends to identify.

Some of the bodies have been identified and properly packed while those yet to be identified were tagged with numbers.

Among them were a mechanic and a lady with a nine months’ old baby who the hospital management referred to as Victoria.

According to the management, Victoria, along with two others, were rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) department but they died.

Relatives were going round the hospitals in search of their loved ones.

Eyewitnesses gave various accounts of the incident.

A commercial motorcycle rider, who gave his name as Wahad, told NAN that a man threw a bag containing the bomb into the congested park.

“I was conveying a passenger to the park this morning when I saw a man throw a big black bag into the park; the next thing I saw was explosion,’’ Wahad said.

Another eyewitness, David Lukman, said that the bomb was planted in a car at the park.

“I am very sure the bomb was either planted at the park last night or a suicide bomber posing as a passenger entered one of the cars with it,’’ he said.

A stockbroker, Abbas Adamu, said four of his friends died in the explosion.

“I have never seen something like this in my entire life.

“My friends told me this morning that they were going to Kaduna and because I was also going to Kaduna in my car, I told them to wait for me at the park so that we go together.

“But I asked them to enter the park and not wait under the bridge because Road Safety and VIO (Vehicle Inspection Officers) officials usually disturb along the road under the bridge.

“Seconds later, I heard a loud explosion; in fact, I can’t explain because I felt something like electric shock inside the car, and as I speak to you now, my friends are all dead,’’ Adamu said.

Mr Romanus Ugwu, an Abuja journalist, resident at Nyanya, told NAN that he ran to the scene on hearing the blast.

Ugwu said he saw a “gory sight” because many people were burning in some cars and were calling for help that never came to them. while others were on the ground, helpless, without limbs, he said.

“You have to be hard hearted to look at these things. I saw a woman lying face down without limbs. One, who was surrounded by her children, struggled for life and gave up in their arms.

“These attackers appear to be more proactive than our rescue organisations and security agencies because so many lives would have been saved if help had come in time.’’

Ugwu said he counted many bodies littered on the ground in the park, but could not say if all of them were dead.

He, however, praised the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel for their rescue efforts.

Mr Abdulrazak Haruna of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Response Unit of NSCDC told NAN that he counted more than 100 bodies, including the injured, while evacuating victims.

“It is a sad experience. We counted 20 BRT buses, 14 cars, 24 commuter buses and 13 motorcycles.’’

Mr Femi Lawal, a survivor of the blast who could not contain his joy and gratitude to God for sparing him, said he had dropped from one of the green buses from One-man Village and was heading to the park when the blast went off.

Lawal said he fell and was dazed momentarily before realising what had happened.

He said he heard a loud bang, which nearly blinded him, and saw a thick smoke while people ran in confusion.

The 32-year-old man, who was wounded on the wrist and neck, said: “It is a day I will live to remember.”

  • 2015: Plot to dump Sambo as Jonathan’s running mate thickens

2015: Plot to dump Sambo as Jonathan’s running mate thickens

    •Four serving governors favoured

The plot to dump Vice President Namadi Sambo as running mate to President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of next year’s election is far from being over, according to indications last night.

The fresh plot is the brainchild of some political heavyweights from the North who believe that for the PDP to make the desired impact in that part of the country in the election, it must have a presidential running mate that is widely acceptable and politically savvy across the region.

Sambo, in their view, is too far removed from the realities of the politics of the region and therefore incapable of either addressing the issues or galvanising support for Jonathan ahead of the 2015 election.

Although the president is yet to publicly announce his intention to seek re-election, political watchers believe that his political machinery is already in place as he meets with different political interests across the nation on a regular basis.

A reliable source said in Abuja that the decision to drop Sambo was reached at a high level meeting and that Jonathan’s body language on the proposals must have influenced the decision of two of the PDP governors, who are at loggerheads with the President, to drop the idea of joining the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Accordingly, four governors were pencilled down to replace Sambo.

These are Aliyu Babangida of Niger State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Isa Yuguda of Bauchi and Ibrahim Shema of Katsina.

Some of the governors had, in the past, dissociated themselves from the alleged plot to replace Sambo who was the governor of Kaduna before he was picked by Jonathan as vice president after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The source said the political heavyweights behind the plot include some retired but influential Army generals from the region, emirs and an ex-president who is pushing for Lamido.

The source said: “Don’t be deceived by the denials and counter-denials. Would you have expected them to publicly accept the plot? What I know is that these persons have been meeting and Sambo might as well be on his last tour of duty as vice president unless something drastically changes the run of event.

“I can tell you that the strategic choice by Aliyu and Lamido to remain with the PDP was due to the promise extracted by some political heavyweights in the party to make one of them, preferably Lamido who is considered to be highly disciplined and with impressive political savvy in the North, to be nominated as vice president after Sambo has failed to command the kind of respect expected of anyone in that position in the North.”

Asked if the president would not be inflicting a grave injustice on his loyal deputy should he accept the suggestion, the source said the reality is that the president would have to analyse the options before him and take a decision that would positively affect his future.

“First, it was understood that the failure to bring the Boko Haram menace to an end or even try to talk to its leadership to stop the carnage and come to the roundtable for a peace talk was due to the fact that most persons in the North still do not recognise Sambo as a Northern leader. They see him as a businessman who knows little or nothing about the politics of his domain.

“What if I told you that Shema is also scheming to be vice president in spite of his repeated denials and there is a belief that former President Ibrahim Babangida might not support Babangida Aliyu as vice president due to some reasons?”

It was gathered that the political heavyweights rooting for a Lamido vice presidential ticket have been holding talks with Jonathan and may soon reach an agreement that would seriously endanger the political fortunes of Sambo in 2015.

The source said former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s sudden silence on the Jonathan presidency might not be unconnected with how far the political discourse has gone.

It is believed that Lamido should be able to garner support to match whatever threat the Buhari or APC strategy in the North might engender.

However, it was learnt that Sambo is not taking the matter lying low as he was said to have been meeting with some of the northern governors excluding those interested in his seat, in order to garner support for his candidacy.

  • Don’t depend on me to solve your matrimonial problems, Jonathan tells daughter

Don’t depend on me to solve your matrimonial problems, Jonathan tells daughter

President Goodluck Jonathan took time off his busy schedule yesterday to offer some advice to his newly wedded daughter, Faith, on marital life.

Faith was married to Godswill Edward at a ceremony in Abuja.

President Jonathan told the couple at the wedding reception in their honour at the International Conference Centre, Abuja to try as much as possible to solve every matrimonial problem that might arise in the course of time.

He said their parents should be left out of such problems.

He said that parents, generally, should leave couples to sort out themselves as parents and their children belong to different generations.

He described the parents’ period as ‘analogue’ and that of their children as ‘digital’.

He said of his mood yesterday: “A day you are giving out your daughter out in marriage is a day of glorious sadness. My advice is that, today is a very special day: we are all smiling and dancing but also note that there will be periods when the relationship will not work smoothly. That is a part of the life of husband and wife.

“There is no couple that will not have some moments when their faces will not be too bright, but it depends on how you reach out ……. and really find time to understand themselves. And we pray that you have a really happy married life and we will continue to pray for you as your parents.”

Continuing, he said: “Our duties as parents is to continue to pray for you, to encourage you and if there are some issues you feel we can solve, you can tell us. But don’t depend on your parents to solve your matrimonial problems. If you have disagreement with your husband…., don’t always run to parents or get advice of your mother or father. Sometimes, they will not give you the best advice. Because your parents are analogue people while you are digital generation.”

The Chairman of the occasion and former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon said marriage is all about give and take.

“No matter the problem that may come your way, never allow the day to pass without resolving the problem through prayers and love,” he said.

“It is only you that can make it a success. Look at your parents and emulate them.” He said

The new couple, who were conveyed from the church to the reception on horse-carriage, cut the cake under the direction of the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Helen Mark.

At the wedding reception yesterday were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih.

Governors at the reception included Jonah Jang (Plateau), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) Theordor Orji (Abia), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina) Liyel Imoke (Cross Rivers) and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim .

Guests were entertained by Iyanya and D’Banj among other artistes.

  • Probes: Pressure mounts on Jonathan to sack Petroleum minister

Probes: Pressure mounts on Jonathan to sack Petroleum minister

President Goodluck Jonathan is under increasing pressure to sack the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke following fears within the Presidency and the top echelon of the ruling party that the various committees of the House of Representatives currently investigating her and the activities of her ministry may pronounce her guilty.

Madueke is facing probe by the House of Representatives over her alleged expenditure of N10 billion on a chartered jet.

A couple of weeks back, aviation experts under the aegis of the Concerned Aviation Professionals (CAP) sent a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan over what they described as the worrisome spate of plundering the nation’s resources by the Minister. They accused the minister of spending not less than N10 billion of public fund on maintaining a private aircraft in the last two years.

The aviation professionals asked the presidency to immediately institute a probe into the ownership, maintenance and usage of the aircraft marked OE-ILA, domiciled at one of the private hangers in a Nigerian airport in the last two years.

The Budget Office recently added to Madueke’s headache when it said it was never aware of any approval and or directive in writing from a higher authority mandating NNPC to import kerosene on behalf of the nation, and subsequently collect subsidy.

Following with the insistence of the House of Representatives to probe the embattled minister and with criticism of the government daily increasing, sources said President Jonathan’s associates and the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are urging him to remove Madueke to save the reputation of his administration and ensure that the party’s chances during the 2015 general elections are not adversely affected by the impeding probe of the minister.

And while the Presidency was still wondering how it could save the Minister, the Reps passed another resolution to the effect that the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas had not remitted revenue to the Federation Account since 2004. It resolved that its Committee on Gas Resources should investigate the issue within three weeks as well.

Sources said that with the House of Reps out of control of the PDP,it would do the party and the Presidency a lot of good to remove the minister thus taking the initiative from the Reps who may indict her.

Even the leadership of the party is calling for a decisive action to be taken so as to save the party further embarrassment.

Recently, Ahmed Gulak, President Jonathan’s special adviser on political matters, has said that the presidency would not shield the minister but added that the president would not take a decision based on media reports but on verifiable facts.

Madueke is said to have paid the sum of 500,000 Euros (N130 million) every month on the maintenance, meaning that, over the last two years, a total of N10 billion has been expended on payments of allowances to the plane’s crew, hangar parking and rent based on a lease agreement.

  • Jonathan’s doleful re-echo of 2007 elections

    Jonathan’s doleful re-echo of 2007 elections

EARLY last week, former Senate President Ken Nnamani presented the report of the National Stakeholders Forum on Electoral Reform to President Goodluck Jonathan. While receiving the Nnamani delegation, President Jonathan spoke of how the 2007 polls caused him great embarrassment. But he pulled his punches, and refused to accept blame or moralise. Though he did not clearly condemn a perverse election in which he was a major beneficiary, the import of what he had to say, however, doubtless showed his true opinion on the discredited poll.

Said the president: “I was embarrassed when the international observers complained that there were certain breaches in the 2007 polls. Even though after taking oath of office and the Supreme Court declared us winners, but each time one travelled abroad, people asked all kinds of questions that even got one angry. That was when I promised myself that if I had an opportunity to oversee elections in Nigeria, no other President or Vice President should suffer that can kind of harassment by the international community. That is why the 2011 elections, even though I was candidate, I said nobody should manipulate elections for me. My ambition and the fate of the country are two different things; the interest of the nation is much more superior to any other ambition and I kept faith with that. At least at the end of that election, it was accepted by observers locally and internationally. I promise that 2015 elections will be better.”

President Jonathan’s resolve to ensure a better 2011 elections no doubt presupposes his low opinion of the 2007 polls. And by promising that the 2015 polls would even be much better, he logically indicated that of the three polls, he was determined to have that of 2007 considered the worst. While 2011 polls were in some respects better than those of 2007, there is nothing to indicate that next year’s polls will be better than any of the two preceding polls, not with his undisguised lethargy towards democratic precepts, his increasing desperation to secure an undeserved second term, and his sinister and constant desire, together with the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, to safely keep all that they indirectly stole through the collusion of the Obasanjo presidency and the electoral commission.

More crucially, however, President Jonathan’s embarrassment is an indictment of the amoral politics former President Olusegun Obasanjo subordinated his entire life, theology and politics to. But Chief Obasanjo, who presided over the horrendous 2007 elections, will simply snort at this effusive and familiar display of hypocrisy by the Jonathan presidency. After all, judging from Dr Jonathan’s reprehensible attitude towards the judiciary, he has appeared to regret the penance that saw him surrender Edo, Ekiti and Osun States to the opposition.

Committee on grazing reserves, stock routes inaugurated

THE Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, at the weekend inaugurated a technical committee to develop grazing reserves and stock routes to address the problems between farmers and herdsmen in the country.

Adesina, at the inauguration in Abuja, said that President Goodluck Jonathan had also set up an inter-ministerial committee to address the issue.

He said that government was working hard to find a solution to the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country.

The minister stressed the need to integrate the state governments for a multi-dimensional and permanent solution to the challenges.

He expressed optimism that the committee would proffer lasting solutions to the crisis and tasked the committee members to deliver their report in two weeks.

Adesina said: “To address this problem, we need short term, medium term and long term solutions and this committee should also look at best practices across the world for solutions.

“Giving the urgency of this matter, the committee has two weeks to deliver their report.”

  • Dame Patience and Nyesom Wike’s guber ambition

Dame Patience and Nyesom Wike’s guber ambition

THE Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, is the First Family’s battering ram in Rivers State. In the past few months, especially in alliance with the erstwhile police commissioner in the state, Mbu Joseph Mbu, Mr Wike made himself eagerly available to carry out the First Family’s bidding in ruffling, nay, singeing, the feathers of Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Mr Wike, it must be admitted, carried out his tasks with the utmost servility and aplomb. He ranted, raved and poked his fingers angrily in the eyes of the governor, while rhapsodising the feats and accomplishments of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife.

Now is payback time for the officious junior minister, perhaps the reward he schemed for all along, the kind of quid pro quo his fawning, ingratiating mind is used to. Responding to allegations of meddlesomeness in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) affairs in Rivers, Dame Patience Jonathan, through his press secretary, denied an omnibus agenda to impose PDP governorship candidates in some states, but acknowledged she had always supported Mr Wike whom she described as popular. Said Dame Patience’s press secretary: “In the case of Rivers State, the First Lady wishes to state categorically that the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, is the leader of PDP in Rivers State and he enjoys the followership of the people of the state. The First Lady is solidly behind Chief Wike. The people of Rivers State are also solidly behind Chief Wike and are prepared to follow him…It is also imperative to state that the First Lady is always with the people and will continue to go with the wish and expectations of the people.”

Political pundits need not wander far afield in their analyses of Rivers State’s PDP selection processes for the 2015 elections: Dame Patience intends to have her way in addition to having her say. And given the uniquely brusque nature of candidate selection in the PDP, such as were witnessed recently in Ekiti and Osun States, the process will be backed fully by presidential power and resources. Indeed, where Dame Patience goes, there her husband will be. Virtue, as Samuel Richardson indicates in his novel Pamela, has its reward. Looking at Mr Wike’s infamous politics, so does vice, as Henry Fielding juxtaposed in his parody Joseph Andrews, and more succinctly in his picaresque novel The History of Tom Jones.
