  • Jonathan, wife, Mrs. Atiku at Rivers PDP rally

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and wife Dame Patience Jonathan on Monday graced the presidential campaign rally of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.

The Jonathans were at the occasion in the company of wife of the presidential candidate of the PDP Dr. (Mrs.) Jennifer Douglas Abubakar and wife of the President of the Senate, Dr. (Mrs.) Toyin Saraki.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, wife of the PDP candidate, Mrs. Abubakar, urged women across the state to mobilise their entire household for victory for PDP on Saturday.

Mrs. Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of women, advised them to protect their votes and ensure they are counted.

She stressed the need to vote out the ‘incompetent’ government of APC, which according to her, “represents hunger, insecurity, economic hardship” and all manner of vices.

She assured women that the Atiku administration will not relegate them but will give them a level playing ground to unleash their potential.

“A vote for Atiku is a vote for a better Nigeria,” she said.

On his part, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate vowed to uphold the rule of law and protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I assure you that I will protect the constitution, protect separation of powers and will not interfere with the National Assembly and Judiciary because I believe in checks and balances.

“My administration will uphold rule of law and will never allow the rule of law to be trampled by anybody,” he pledged.

The PDP candidate also promised to complete the long-abandoned East-West road and complete the dredging of old Port Harcourt and Onne sea ports, ” to create more job opportunities”.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan who was also in attendance declared that Nigerians are working hard for the election of Atiku Abubakar, because they believe he has the capacity to make Nigeria work again.

  • I am the author of restructuring – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has described himself as the author of restructuring, claiming that he will be Nigeria’s President from May 29 this year and that President Muhammadu Buhari must go.

The former Vice-President spoke on Monday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, near Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State, while campaigning, along with other leaders of PDP.

President Buhari will also be at the same Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Tuesday, in continuation of his presidential campaigns.

Atiku, who was accompanied by one of his wives, Jennifer, and other leaders of PDP, got to the stadium at 2:27 p.m., for campaign slated for 10 a.m., when many tired members of the party had left the venue, in view of stress, caused by the scorching sun, with one of the Masters of Ceremonies (MCs) continually announcing: “Close the back gate,” when the stadium almost became empty.

When the vice-presidential candidate of PDP, Peter Obi, was asked to speak, he kept shouting in pidgin English: “Rivers people, make una wait now.”

The rally was also attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was accompanied by his wife, Dame Patience; Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike; his counterpart of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; the Director-General of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President; the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, an indigene of Andoni LGA of Rivers state; and Rivers Chairman of PDP, Chief Felix Obuah; among other leaders of the party.

Atiku said: “Let me use this opportunity to pay tribute to a Nigerian who is patriotic, who is fearless, who is courageous, who is hardworking and who believes in this country. That Nigerian is Governor Wike. Wike and I have a few things in common. We no dey fear ooo. Do you want somebody we dey fear to lead you. It means if he is afraid, you will all be finished. I want to commend him (Wike) for the hard work he has done in Rivers State. I have been part and parcel of this state (Rivers) since 1984. I have not seen one single governor who has transformed this state to such a level that you can compare it with any modernised state.

“I have been to many parts of this state (Rivers). The places where I used to go with boats, now I can do by road and cars, sitting comfortably. Wike did all this. He deserves a second term. He deserves to be re-elected. I know you are going to re-elect him. Wike, carry go.

“If you elect PDP, which I am sure you are going to elect, and if you elect Atiku, you know that I am the author of restructuring. I will give it (restructuring) to Niger Delta and I will give it to all parts of this country. We must restructure.

“It is the Obasanjo/Atiku administration that started the East-West Road. Till today, it is not finished. It is not finished, because you did not vote for PDP in 2015 to continue. APC came and halted it. If you vote for PDP again, we are going to finish it.

“Your ports (sea) that do not work to create jobs, the Port Harcourt Port and Onne Port, we will complete them, so that we can create thousands of jobs for young men and women in Rivers State.

“You can see that APC has not done anything for you. They have not done anything for Niger Delta. They have not done anything for Southsouth. Every development that you have got in Rivers State, Southsouth or Niger Delta is PDP. So, continue to vote for PDP. I beg you.

“I want to assure you that I will protect the constitution (of Nigeria). You know sey nobody go court reach me in Nigeria, to protect our constitution. I will protect separation of powers. I will not interfere with the National Assembly, because I believe in checks and balances. I will not interfere with the judiciary, because it is part and parcel of our checks and balances. I will uphold the rule of law. I will not allow rule of law to be trampled by anybody.”

The presidential candidate of PDP also alleged that his counterpart of APC was preaching violence, claiming that it was not the first time that President Buhari would do so, stressing that Nigerians wanted peace, development, prosperity and jobs, while not being ready to fight one another again, declaring that: “Buhari must go.”

Jonathan stated that Atiku would be Nigeria’s president from May 29, 2019, describing Rivers state as totally PDP, claiming that Nigeria had not made progress since he left office on May 29, 2015, after his humiliating defeat by President Buhari, the first of its kind in Nigeria’s history, for a sitting president to lose election.

Wike said: “We have darkness and light (in Nigeria). APC is darkness. PDP is light. Do you want to vote for darkness? It is a war between dictatorship and freedom. Do you want dictatorship? Dictatorship is APC. Freedom is PDP. Are you Atikulated?”

Secondus described Atiku as the next president of Nigeria, alleging that APC was in disarray, with its leaders desperate and confused, making them to allegedly be running from pillar to post, while insisting that the presidential candidate of PDP would be a winner on February 16, with Buhari to have no choice, but to leave the presidential villa on May 29 this year and return to his Daura hometown.

National chairman of PDP maintained that Atiku had capacity, energy, being innovative, would be able to work for 24 hours daily and would be fully in charge as the Commander-in-Chief, claiming that the party’s presidential candidate would be the next helmsman of Nigeria this year.

Saraki urged Nigerians to come out en masse on Saturday and vote for Atiku and other candidates of PDP, in order to move the nation forward, while claiming that his party’s presidential candidate would change Nigeria and put an end to the current poverty.

Obi claimed that the only person who could make Nigeria to work again would be Atiku.

Rivers chairman of PDP assured that people of the state would give Atiku 100 per cent votes, while presenting 58 governorship candidates of other political parties in the state, who decided to adopt Wike, thereby withdrawing their candidacy to back the PDP’s governorship candidate in Rivers.

While also speaking, the Presidential Campaign Coordinator in Rivers state, Senator Olaka Worgu, noted that for better life, Nigerians must massively vote for Atiku on Saturday, stressing that Nigerians deserved better than they were currently getting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Buhari.

The rally was rounded off at 3:36 p.m.

“…it is has been a long desire because wherever the military is found, we are there and by implication and by our establishment, we are the next to the soldiers. We are your closest, most reliable friends and the closest confidant that you can trust.

“By our principles, we are independent and neutral. We don’t discriminate and that is why we are always with you.

“We have come to establish that relationship and to show that we are here for you. You can always rely and call on us. It is unfortunate that the junior officers amongst you don’t seem to understand our relationship with them.

“Elections are coming up, so many things are coming up and you are here (for Egwueke III), so that is why we have come to tell you that we are brothers. We want to work with you and establish that relationship for proper understanding.

“We have competent internationally trained first aiders who can come into your various camps and train the soldiers to add to what they know and yet to know that would better their lives in the military and in your various families.”

The secretary of Red Cross, Pastor Ebere Okite speaking on preparedness of Red Cross towards ensuring that they handle emergency cases across the state during and after the 2019 elections said “Election is the current thing and we know that in Nigeria, although that we don’t preempt it, as Red Cross, we prepare for emergencies before they occur.

“That is why we are effective. From what we have seen, if there is anything like violence, we won’t be surprised and so, we have started preparing emergency first aid team for this particular election.

“We want to make sure that our emergency team is on ground so that on the day of the elections, we will be in various units across the state. Our duty is to come into action whenever there is wound or disaster. We will even stay after the elections because we know that there could be post election violence. We will continue to stay some day in areas where there are expectations of violence to take care of any emergency.

“We have come to make ourselves known to you so that you will know that we are there. When you see us, you will see us as friends who don’t take sides. We are independent, neutral and universal, these three things gives us the opportunity to be at our best. Anytime that you are ready, we will send our personnel who will come to train your men on internal and domestic first aid.”

  • Elections: Jonathan, Abubakar, preach peace

    ….Attributes keen competition for tension

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar (rtd) have called on all political actors in the country to ensure peace as the country goes to polls in some few days’ time.

The duo spoke on the need for the political actors to douse tension which has always been part of the country’s electoral process.

The two former leaders spoke at a one day conference on peaceful elections and national development organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), with the theme “Peaceful Elections and National Development”.

They also pointed out that peace is essential for the survival and development of the country.

In his opening remark, former President Jonathan pointed out the strong connection between the struggle for power and national development.

He noted that despite the improvement recorded in the country’s electoral process, election related violence has continued to occur. This, he said has hinder peaceful co-existence, economic growth and sustainable development.

He therefore called on political actors to change their approach and disposition towards stewardship; stressing that as a nation, emphasis should be on the development of the people.

Jonathan further explained that the ten most developed nations on earth are those countries that experience the least conflicts while the ten least developed countries, many of them here in Africa, are the once wallowing in the worst form of conflicts.

He said: “No doubt, there is a strong nexus between the struggle for power and national development. There is a vicious cycle in Africa where the struggle for political power leads to conflicts that bring up poor governance and creates hardship which fuels the struggle for change of leadership; thus, creating further conflicts and poor leadership.

“It is my considered view that as African leaders, we must change our approach and disposition towards stewardship. We must get to the stage where we should be more interested in developing our people, rather than ruling or just governing them.

A development-minded leader is visionary and selfless. He does not seek power at all cost and will not wield it for its own sake.

“The ten most developed nations on this earth are those countries that experience the least conflicts while the ten least developed countries, many of them here in Africa, are the once wallowing in the worst form of conflicts. The lesson in this existential reality is that any leader who is committed to the development of his country will do everything to save it from turmoil and conflicts.

“There is no gainsaying that when politicians resort to desperate measures in the bid to occupy important political positions, they run the risk of plunging their countries into serious crises that often lead to loss of lives, degradation of values as well as destruction of private and public assets.

“These breed of politicians often ignore the fact that to be patriotic is to love your country and be prepared to live and die for her honour, reputation, freedom, progress and the ascendancy of the common good. You can restore destroyed infrastructure almost to its former state or even better, but you cannot easily repair people’s psyche, reconcile aggrieved persons and restore hope in a nation, once they are damaged in destructive leadership struggles.

“In Nigeria we know that the injuries of the civil war which ended since 1970 are still in our memories.

“We know that good governance is the fertile ground upon which peace and sustainable economic growth are planted. In this regard, it is important to point out that in a democracy, periodic, credible and peaceful elections is the necessary gateway to improved governance and people-oriented development.

“Although it is reassuring to note that democracy is being consolidated on the continent, with elections now conducted routinely by many African nations, it is however difficult to express such optimism on the peaceful nature of the electoral processes.

“It is on record that despite the marked improvement on the regularity and number of democratic nations, election-related violence has continued to be experienced in many African nations, often to the detriment of peaceful co-existence, economic growth and sustainable development.

“This year, hundreds of millions of Africans will go to the polls in at least 20 nations, from the south to the north of the continent, including Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa where general elections are holding.”

“As the ongoing democratic process unfolds, with the rest of the world watching with keen interest, we are also mindful of the worries of Nigerians on whether it would end peacefully,” he added.

In his remark, Abubakar who was the chairman of the occasion noted the place of violence in the country’s political space, saying that Nigeria is not strange to electoral violence, as the country has had its share of electoral violence in the past.

This he attributed to the keen competitions among the various contenders.

According to him, “The period of elections in this country is often tension soaked because of the competition involved. Nigeria is not strange to electoral violence.”

African countries are usually tension soaked because of the very cutthroat competition involved. Africa indeed is a hot bed of election controversies. In African countries like Kenya, Cote d’ Ivoire and the Gambia, we have seen the serious implications of electoral tension to national security and development.

“Nigeria is not a stranger to electoral violence. This country has historically had its fair share of election violence. Some of the violence even dates back to pre-independence era and Nigerians have witnessed the destruction that took place and retarded development.”

He also added, “All Nigerians and indeed the whole world are praying that the election will be peaceful. As we all know, peace is absolutely necessary for the survival a nation because without peace there will be no nation, without a nation there wouldn’t be any election.”

Abubakar also commended the former president for handling 2015 general elections well, especially with the prediction of that the country will be Balkanized.

He noted that Jonathan saved the country from plunging into political crisis by keeping to his words that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

By conceding defeat in 2015, he stressed that Jonathan saved the country from falling into crises.

“Allow me to on behalf of all Nigerians once more thank former President Goodluck Jonathan for saving the country from falling into political crisis and in further strengthening the growth of democracy not only in Nigeria but in Africa and indeed the world,” he said.

“The General elections where the doomsayers were predicting the balkanisation of Nigeria, but thank God through the action of Nigerians and the then president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, they were proved wrong because this gentleman kept his word that his presidency is not worth the blood of any Nigerian and he graciously conceded defeat at that election,” he added.

In his presentation, Bishop Mathew Kukah pointed out that the problem with Nigerians is that they assume a lot about their leaders.

Voters he further added must not leave our fate in the hands of politicians, saying that leaders should be interrogated.

The outspoken Bishop also advocated for inter-tribal marriage as a way of uniting the people.

According to him, only common solidarity can save the country from electoral violence.

  • London Arbitration Tribunal awards $8.9b fine against Nigeria

A London Arbitration Tribunal has awarded $8.9 billion fine against Nigeria in favour of a British firm, Process and Industrial Developments Limited (P & ID).

The P & ID had initiated moves to recover a judgment debt of $6.6 billion in damages plus $2.3 billion in uncollected interest, which was calculated at $1.2 million a day, according to a lead judgement by Lord Hoffman.

If Nigeria fails to pay the judgment fine before February 15, P&ID can enforce the award against the country by seizing its assets in the United Kingdom (UK).

The fine emanated from the contractual breach of three previous administrations of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan.

According to court papers, the judgment debt arose from failure to perform its contractual obligations under a gas supply and processing agreement it signed with P & ID.

The judgment sum had snowballed into $9 billion as a result of interest calculated at seven per cent from the date the decision was reached by an arbitration tribunal in the UK.

According to the UK Tribunal ruling, it was noted the agreement was executed on January 11, 2010 by P & ID and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources for and on behalf of the Federal Government to refine associated natural gas (also known as wet gas) into non-associated natural gas to be used by Nigeria in powering its national electric grid.

The ruling also stated the Tribunal found that Nigeria had repudiated the agreement by failing to satisfy its contractual obligations and eventually abandoning the project contemplated there under, causing the British firm to lose substantial profits it would have earned over the 20-year period during which Nigeria was to supply the company with natural gas.

Under the agreement, the P&ID project would have generated 3000 megawatts (Mw) of electricity for Nigeria.

Natural gas that was being flared off would instead have been processed and used to generate electricity for Nigerians.

Court documents also showed March 20, 2013 was the date on which P & ID accepted Nigeria’s repudiation of the agreement.

However, Nigeria did not move to set aside the final award at the seat of arbitration, and under English law, the deadline for doing so has long passed.

The failure to accept and secure a settlement has led to saddling Nigeria with over $9 billion of additional debt.

According to court documents, earlier efforts to settle the contractual breach had been stalled by the Nigerian government.

On 3 May 2015, P&ID offered to settle the dispute with the Nigerian government for $850 million.

On 30 May 2015, the matter was brought before President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The government rejected the $850 million settlement, which was less than 10 per cent of the current judgment sum.

It was also learnt at present there is no idea which Nigeria assets would be affected, as this has not been decided but oil revenues might likely be target.

It was learnt if P & ID is successful at the hearing next month, it can enforce the award against Nigeria by seizing its assets in the UK. The tribunal ruling would give the company permission to enforce the award.

The consequences of the judgment will be devastating because Nigeria’s foreign currency reserves are $43.2 billion which means the P&ID judgment alone is over 11 per cent of Nigeria’s entire reserves.

Nigerian government contractual breach related to supplying P & ID with agreed-upon quantities of wet gas at first; 150 million, and finally, 400 million standard cubic feet per day during the 20-year period of supply while the firm was to strip away the heavy hydrocarbons known as Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) that make wet gas unsuitable for electricity generation, then return to Nigeria the lean gas thus created.

The refining process was to take place at the gas processing facilities to be built by P & ID on a site in Calabar.

Reacting to the issue, the Director Press, Ministry of Petroleum, Mr Idang Alibi who spoke with The Nation , confirmed the financial obligation.

He also confirmed the Ministry of Petroleum and Federal Government were aware and doing something about them.

He, however, did not provide details.

He only said that the Ministry will respond to it at the appropriate time.
