Google, African institutions launch WAXAL to advance African AI

Google, in collaboration with a consortium of leading African research institutions, has announced the launch of WAXAL, a large-scale, openly accessible speech dataset aimed at accelerating research and fostering the development of inclusive artificial intelligence technologies across Africa.

The dataset is designed to bridge a longstanding digital gap affecting more than 100 million people by providing foundational speech data for 21 Sub-Saharan African languages, including Hausa, Yoruba, Luganda, and Acholi.

Despite the widespread adoption of voice-enabled technologies globally, the lack of high-quality speech data has limited their development for most of Africa’s more than 2,000 languages, effectively excluding millions of users from accessing digital tools in their native languages.

Developed over three years with funding from Google, the WAXAL dataset comprises 1,250 hours of transcribed, natural speech, alongside more than 20 hours of high-quality studio recordings intended for building advanced synthetic voice systems.

Speaking on the initiative, Head of Google Research Africa, Aisha Walcott-Bryant, said the project is focused on empowering African communities through technology.

“The ultimate impact of WAXAL is the empowerment of people in Africa,” Walcott-Bryant said. “This dataset provides a critical foundation for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to build technology on their own terms and in their own languages, reaching over 100 million people. We look forward to seeing African innovators develop solutions ranging from educational tools to voice-enabled services that create real economic opportunities.”

A key feature of the project is its community-led approach. African academic and community organisations, including Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Ghana, and Digital Umuganda in Rwanda, led the data collection process with technical guidance from Google. The partner institutions retain full ownership of the data, establishing a model for equitable, partnership-driven AI development.

The dataset supports the following languages: Acholi, Akan, Dagaare, Dagbani, Dholuo, Ewe, Fante, Fulani (Fula), Hausa, Igbo, Ikposo (Kposo), Kikuyu, Lingala, Luganda, Malagasy, Masaaba, Nyankole, Rukiga, Shona, Soga (Lusoga), Swahili, and Yoruba.

Commenting on the project, Joyce Nakatumba-Nabende, Senior Lecturer at Makerere University’s School of Computing and Information Technology, said the dataset is already strengthening local research capacity in Uganda.

“For AI to have a real impact in Africa, it must speak our languages and understand our contexts,” she said. “WAXAL gives our researchers the high-quality data needed to build speech technologies that reflect our communities, while supporting new student- and faculty-led projects.”

Similarly, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana, Prof. Isaac Wiafe, said the initiative has empowered institutions to build their own language resources and train a new generation of AI researchers.

“Over 7,000 volunteers participated because they wanted their voices and languages represented in the digital future,” Wiafe said. “That collective effort has already sparked innovation in health, education, and agriculture, proving that when data exists, opportunities expand.”

The WAXAL dataset is now publicly available. More details can be found on the Google Africa blog.

  • Google-Ipsos report highlights Nigeria’s rapid rise in AI adoption

Google-Ipsos report highlights Nigeria’s rapid rise in AI adoption

A new joint report by Google and Ipsos has revealed that Nigerians are among the world’s leading adopters of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with widespread use cutting across education, work, and entrepreneurship.

The study, titled “Our Life with AI: Helpfulness in the Hands of More People,” shows that Nigerians are not only embracing AI rapidly but are also highly optimistic about its potential to drive learning, innovation, and economic growth.

According to the report, 88 per cent of Nigerian adults have used an AI chatbot, representing an 18-point increase from 2024. This figure places Nigeria far ahead of the global average of 62 per cent, highlighting the country’s strong engagement with emerging technologies.

Reacting to the findings, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google in West Africa, said the report reflects Nigerians’ creative and purposeful use of AI.

“It’s inspiring to see how Nigerians are using AI to unlock new opportunities for learning, growth, and economic empowerment,” Kola-Ogunlade said. “This report goes beyond high adoption rates—it tells the story of a nation actively shaping its future with technology. We remain committed to making AI helpful and accessible to everyone.”

The survey shows that Nigerians are using AI extensively for both personal and professional development.

An overwhelming 93 per cent of respondents said they use AI to learn or better understand complex topics, compared to 74 per cent globally. In the workplace, 91 per cent rely on AI tools to support their daily tasks.

Entrepreneurship also stands out as a major area of impact, with 80 per cent of Nigerians using AI to explore new business ideas or career changes—nearly double the global average of 42 per cent.

Nigerians expressed strong confidence in AI’s role in education, describing it as a transformative tool for learning and access to information.

About 91 per cent of respondents believe AI is having a positive impact on education, compared to around 65 per cent globally, while 95 per cent said university students and educators are likely to benefit significantly from the technology.

The report also highlights Nigerians’ optimism about the future of AI. About 80 per cent of Nigerians said they are more excited than concerned about AI’s possibilities, compared to a much narrower global split of 53 per cent excited and 46 per cent concerned.

Among Nigerians who use AI frequently, optimism rises even further, with 90 per cent expressing excitement about the technology’s future impact.

The findings underline Nigeria’s growing role as a key player in the global AI landscape, driven by innovation, curiosity, and a strong belief in technology as a catalyst for progress.

Apple seeks Google’s aid to power AI upgrade for Siri

Improvements to a number of Apple services – including a more personalised version of its virtual assistant, Siri – are to be powered with AI provided by Google.

The tech giants have announced a “multi-year collaboration” which will see the iPhone-maker base some of its key tech on Google’s Gemini AI models.

In a joint statement, the two firms said the partnership would unlock “innovative new experiences” for Apple users.

However, experts say it demonstrates how Apple’s cautious approach to building and rolling out its own AI tools has left it reliant on other companies.

“By outsourcing the foundational layer of its AI to Google, Apple is effectively admitting that its internal efforts couldn’t compete with Google’s Gemini in terms of capability and scale in the short term,” IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said.

He told the BBC while the move was “a significant and pragmatic strategy” for Apple, it also marked a departure from its historic approach to development.

“Apple always preferred to own every layer of its technology,” he said, adding that doing so “gave them an edge against their competitors”.

Nonetheless he and other analysts say the deal is likely to be welcomed by consumers, noting demand among many iPhone users for AI features as Google, Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers continue to bring these to their handsets.

Tech analyst Paolo Pescatore said Apple’s latest financial results suggested AI was not the most sought-after feature for people deciding whether to buy an iPhone.

But he told the BBC “this will gradually change as AI-powered services gain adoption”.

This is not the first deal Apple has struck with an AI firm.

It unveiled a similar partnership with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI in June 2024, which made the popular chatbot available as part of its suite of generative AI tools, Apple Intelligence.

Google and Apple said in a joint statement on Monday that Apple Intelligence would continue to operate in Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system.

“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” they said.

“Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”

Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report, offering a detailed look at the events, personalities, entertainment, and cultural moments that shaped the curiosity of Nigerians throughout the year.

The data, published on Thursday, reflects how Nigerians turned to Google to track major political developments, pay tribute to national icons, decode viral slang, and explore emerging food and lifestyle trends.

Political conversation featured prominently on Search in 2025. Senator Natasha Akpoti was the most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring heightened political engagement during the year.

Global news events also sparked significant interest, with the Israel–Iran conflict and the U.S. elections ranking among the top trending topics.

Nigerians also searched widely following the deaths of prominent figures including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai, and Pope Francis.

Entertainment searches were driven largely by Nigerian music and cinema. ‘Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)’ by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills was the most searched song of the year, followed by Fido’s ‘Joy Is Coming’ and Davido and Omah Lay’s collaboration ‘With You’.

In film and series, local productions led the trends. Kemi Adetiba appeared among the most searched personalities, boosted by the success of To Kill a Monkey, which ranked as Nigeria’s top trending local series in 2025.

The cultural impact of online trends was evident in the year’s top questions. The query “What is Labubu?” topped the list as Nigerians sought to understand the viral character that swept social media. Searches for the meaning of “Achalugo,” popularised by the YouTube film Love in Every Word, also surged.

Food-related searches blended tradition with experimentation. Nigerians looked up recipes ranging from chinchin and sausage rolls to Ginger Shots, Pornstar Martini, and global favourites such as hummus and lasagna.

“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa. “These lists show how Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them.”

  • How Nigerians are using fashion to celebrate heritage, by Google

How Nigerians are using fashion to celebrate heritage, by Google

New search data released by Google on Wednesday highlights how fashion in Nigeria continues to serve as a mirror of cultural pride, self-expression, and creative fusion between global and local influences.

The data, which shows a massive surge in searches for nostalgic silhouettes and traditional attire, arrives just as the city prepares for Lagos Fashion Week, beginning October 29th.

The trends underscore that Nigerians are actively using fashion as a dialogue with the past. Search interest in vintage clothing increased by +90% in the past two months (August-September 2025 vs. the preceding year), with top related searches including “vintage scarf” and “vintage jacket.” This is mirrored by remarkable growth in searches for specific retro pieces: Zoot suit searches soared by +310%, while Tube top searches increased by +140%, and Bell-bottoms saw a +60% spike, signaling a vibrant, expressive return to bold styles of decades past.

Beyond nostalgia, the data clearly demonstrates a deep-seated pride in Nigerian heritage, showing how contemporary style is being shaped by local culture. Top searches for “outfit” items included specific queries for “Traditional outfit of igbo” and “Nupe outfit.” This commitment to local identity is merged with modern styling, as seen in the trending “how to style” searches like “Scarf on bubu gown,” “Jacket with a gown,” and “Sweatshirts with skirts,” illustrating a generation seamlessly fusing classic Nigerian garments with global fashion conventions.

Footwear is also seeing a dramatic shift toward confident, classic accessories, with search interest for the slingback shoe increasing by +110% in the past 30 days. Top queries like “yellow slingback heels” and “rosegold slingback heels” indicate an immediate adoption of statement pieces.

“By combining Google Cloud’s AI technology, including its Gemini models, with the World Bank Group’s development expertise, the initiative helps governments quickly create interoperable networks for critical sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and skilling.

“Citizens can interact with these AI-powered services in over 40 languages, even on simple devices.

“The collaboration builds on a successful pro bono pilot in Uttar Pradesh in India that helped thousands of smallholder farmers increase profitability.

“To foster a sustainable and open ecosystem, Google.org is providing funding to the new nonprofit Networks for Humanity (NFH), to build universal digital infrastructure (Beckn open network and Finternet asset tokenization), establish regional innovation labs, and pilot social impact applications globally.”

  • Yahoo, Google demand cash for email service offering

Yahoo, Google demand cash for email service offering

This is not the best of time for Yahoo users. When they open their email boxes, the message popping up warns them about the imminence of the cessation of services to except they subscribe more space or delete old items to free up space.

Yahoo Mail user, who simply identified himself as Simeon, recounted that he had used the platform for over a decade and had received vital information about his banking transaction and travels out of the country.

Getting a sudden message from Yahoo Mail therefore got him upset and at the same time worried.

“As usual, I opened my email and the message I received was a warning that I might not be able to send or receive emails over the next two months if I failed to pay for subscription by way of more space or delete files that have consumed huge spaces.

“Initially, I opted for deleting old emails. I deleted well over 5,000 emails and pictures and the message disappeared,” he said.

According to him, three weeks after, the message reappeared warning him about lack of storage space and the same options were given.

He said by the nature of his job, there were certain mails and images he couldn’t afford to let go. Hence, he embraced the option of paying for more space.

“At my wits end, I agreed to buy about 20 GB but was frustrated by the payment method. The United States dollar is the vehicle for payment. I didn’t have a domiciliary account and efforts to pay with my naira card was frustrated. So I gave up the idea and went back to free more spaces,” he said.

For Mrs. Esther Kokumo, she had enjoyed her Gmail account for over a decade. According to her, she had opened the Gmail account after some internet roughnecks hijacked her Yahoo Mail account, reset her password and shut her permanently out of the account.

For so long, she enjoyed the services of Gmail until recently, she received a message with a sign that looked like a fire alert on her email.

Like Yahoo Mail, the message read: “Your Gmail storage is 99% full. You’ve used 17 GB of the 17 GB of Google Account storage that is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

“Once you run out of space, you won’t be able to: Send and receive emails on Gmail; Back up new photos and videos to Google Photos; Upload new files to Google Drive; Edit or create new files using Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and more.

“The app gave me options to either get more storage or clean up space. I chose the latter but when I clicked, it took me to the Google storage manager from where I saw Emails with large attachments 1 GB; Large photos and videos 32 MB; Spam emails 267 KB; and Large Drive files 6KB. It gave me an opportunity to review each of these files before deleting them.

“I chose to delete despite another message saying: Keep more files and photos. Get 100 GB of storage for usually N1, 900 per month now, N470 for three months,” Mrs. Kokumo said.

According to her, she did not want to start what she cannot finish. “If I click now, they could just continue to increase their prices. These are companies that don’t have offices here. We just entrust them with a vital data which we don’t even know what they do with it,” she said.

A telecom sector analyst said the companies are not out to charity; they are in for business and to make profit. “Their strategy has worked. Their business model too is superb. They first allow you to enjoy the freebies, making sure that you were already used to it before slamming charges on you.

“I am sure not many people will be willing to lose their emails because it has become an indispensable adjunct to modern life. You book your flight via your mail, get visa appointments and even bank alerts via it, so you can see how indispensable the email has become,” he said on condition of anonymity.

Yahoo Mail started demanding payment for certain aspects of its platform use, primarily related to storage. The free storage limit for Yahoo Mail has been drastically reduced to 20GB, and users who exceed that limit must either delete emails or pay for additional storage to continue sending and receiving emails.

Yahoo offers paid storage plans such as 100GB for $1.99 per month and 1TB for $9.99 per month. Additionally, Yahoo Mail Plus, a premium subscription, costs around $5 per month and includes features like 200GB storage and an ad-free interface.

“Users who do not upgrade may find their abilities to use some services restricted, though mailbox access remains for managing storage. This change has caused dissatisfaction among many users, especially those who have used the service for a long time and now face unexpected fees.

Yahoo Mail offers a straightforward pricing model with one main paid plan at $5 per month for five TB storage and premium features.

Gmail provides more tiered options starting at $1.99/month for 100 GB, with higher tiers offering advanced Workspace and AI features up to $21.99/month.

Microsoft Outlook’s personal plan is around $6.99 with one TB storage bundled with Office 365 apps.

Yahoo Mail’s storage offering is very competitive, giving five TB at a mid-range price while Gmail’s cheapest 100 GB plan is much cheaper but with less storage.

Gmail and Outlook provide broader productivity features and business-focused plans which Yahoo Mail lacks.

Overall, Yahoo Mail’s paid plan provides excellent value on raw storage at $5 for five TB but less flexibility and additional features compared to Gmail’s tiered ecosystem or Outlook’s productivity suite integration.

  • Google debuts AI Mode in Search, bringing more powerful, intuitive experience to users

Google debuts AI Mode in Search, bringing more powerful, intuitive experience to users

Google today announced the launch of AI Mode in Search for users in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, introducing a new era of AI-powered search that is more intuitive, comprehensive, and helpful. AI Mode helps users tackle complex, multi-part questions with more intuitive responses, multimodal inputs, and deeper ways to explore topics.

AI Mode transforms how people interact with Search by allowing them to ask nuanced and exploratory questions that would previously require multiple searches. Powered by a custom version of Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model, AI Mode brings advanced reasoning and context understanding to Search.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring AI Mode to our users in the region,” said Alex Okosi, Managing Director, Google Africa. “We know that people in this region are curious and have complex questions about everything from planning a trip to understanding a new concept. With AI Mode, Google is reimagining the Search experience. Users will not only find the information they need more easily but will also be empowered to explore a wider range of content from across the web.”

Read Also: Foundation, Google train visually-impaired students, others on AI, Android tools

AI Mode is especially useful for longer, more detailed queries. A key feature of AI Mode is its advanced reasoning, which uses a query fan-out technique to break down a user’s question into subtopics and simultaneously search a multitude of queries on their behalf. This allows for a deeper dive into the web, uncovering hyper-relevant content. Furthermore, AI Mode is designed to be truly multimodal, allowing users to interact in the most natural way for them, whether through text, voice, or even images.

Simply tapping the microphone icon or uploading a photo allows users to ask questions using their voice or camera. A core principle of AI Mode is to help users find the best of the web. The AI-powered response includes prominent links to web sources, expanding the types of questions people can ask and opening up new opportunities for content discovery.

Google remains committed to supporting the open web and ensuring that its AI-powered features are rooted in its core quality and ranking systems. With AI Mode, web links are prominently displayed, ensuring users can easily click through to discover more. Data from AI Overviews shows that AI-powered results lead users to visit a greater diversity of websites and spend more time engaging with them. While AI Mode aims to provide a reliable AI-powered response, in cases where confidence is not high, the system will default to a set of traditional web search results.

AI Mode will begin rolling out today and will appear as a tab on the Search results page and within the Google app for Android and iOS.

Google also announced $3 million in funding to the Masakhane Research Foundation, the open research collective advancing AI tools in over 40 African languages. The funding will support the development of high-quality datasets, machine translation models, and speech tools that make digital content more accessible to millions of Africans in their native languages.

To further empower innovation, Google is launching a catalytic funding initiative to support AI-driven startups tackling real-world challenges. This platform will combine philanthropic capital, venture investment, and Google’s technical expertise to help more than 100 early-stage ventures scale AI-based solutions in agriculture, healthcare, education, and other vital sectors. Startups will also receive mentorship, access to tools, and technical guidance to support responsible development.

Africa’s AI talent is growing rapidly, but the infrastructure to support it must grow in tandem. That’s why a cornerstone of this announcement is the launch of the AI Community Center in Accra — a first-of-its-kind space for AI learning, experimentation, and collaboration in Africa.

The Center will host training sessions, community events, and workshops focused on responsible AI development. Its programming will span four pillars: AI literacy, community technology, social impact, and arts and culture — providing a platform for a diverse ecosystem of developers, students, and creators to engage with AI in ways that are grounded in African priorities.

To help meet the rising demand for AI and digital skills, Google is rolling out 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships for students in higher learning institutions across Ghana. These fully funded, self-paced programs will focus on AI Essentials, Prompting Essentials, and other high-growth fields like IT Support, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity, enabling more learners to access job-ready training and build careers in AI and the digital economy.

Beyond Ghana, Google.org is committing an additional $7 million to support AI education across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. The funding will support academic institutions and nonprofits building localized AI curricula, online safety training, and cybersecurity programs.

Additionally, two new $1 million grants from Google.org aim to bolster AI research capacity across the continent. One grant goes to the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI) at the University of Pretoria to support applied AI research and training.

The other supports the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute in South Africa, which will fund MSc and PhD students to conduct foundational AI research and help shape Africa’s role in the global AI landscape.

Speaking about the announcements, James Manyika, Senior Vice President for Research, Labs, and Technology & Society at Google, said, “Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today. We are committed to supporting the next wave of innovation through long-term investment, local partnerships, and platforms that help researchers and entrepreneurs build solutions that matter.”

Yossi Matias, Vice President of Engineering and Research at Google, added: “This new wave of support reflects our belief in the talent, creativity, and ingenuity across the continent. By building with local communities and institutions, we’re supporting solutions that are rooted in Africa’s realities and built for global impact.”

These new initiatives build on Google’s ongoing work across the continent. Past efforts have included partnerships to support AI-powered maternal health dashboards in Ghana and Nigeria, wildfire alerts in East Africa, and regional language models developed by teams in Accra and Nairobi. They also reflect Google’s continued focus on shared infrastructure, open research, and inclusive innovation that ensures AI works for everyone.
