Google, institute partner on new policies for Africa’s digital space

Google in Africa and Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP) are partnering to explore ways of evolving new policies and regulatory environment that support digital innovations in Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that academics in relevant disciplines drawn from across Africa are gathered at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan for a three-day conference to end on May 5.

The conference tagged: “2017 Africa Academic Network on Internet Policy” is organised by ISGPP and Google in Africa.

Mrs Titi Akinsanya-Bolarinwa, the Public Policy and Public Affairs Lead, Google in Africa said that the gathering was an opportunity to bring Africa’s intellectual minds together to identify the gaps and evolve plans to address them.

She said that the effort was to ensure that it worked with the government on policies that directly impact the technology sector as it was critical to the development of the country.

“Technology will always move faster than we can make policies as human beings due to less restriction.

“But this does not mean that we should not make or do enough to ensure we have the right policy and regulatory environment that will support innovation, particularly the digital sector,’’ she said.

Akinsanya-Bolarinwa said that the conference was an avenue to interrogate and look at policy formulation in a sound manner as well as key issues around accessing infrastructure.

According to her, if we are moving forward with digital economy, we have to support it with innovation and for that to happen, we have to support it and invest in intellectual work.

She said that the conference should be able to look at copyright and intellectual protection because increasingly there were innovations that emerge from the market.

Akinsanya-Bolarinwa said that knowledge and capacity building would also be considered at the roundtable and expressed optimism about a better outcome.

“We recognise that we are multinational in Google and we are putting this in motion not to serve our particular needs but to ensure that the space we are doing business is ripe for innovation.

Google is going to be 20 years soon and we have continued to support academic narratives wherever we are, be it Europe, America, Asia and now Africa.

“We have 80 percent representation in this conference and we have ensured that there is representation from the Southern, Eastern, Western and Northern Africa,’’ she said.

Dr Tunji Olaopa, the Executive Vice-Chairman, ISGPP said that the key objective of the gathering was to lay the foundation on the status of Africa considering the way the internet was evolving.

Olaopa, a former permanent secretary in the civil service said the objective was to ensure that policy was not stagnant, saying it would leverage on the IGSPP network with the government.

“Nigeria is said to have 93 million internet users, which is the largest in Africa. Frankly speaking, it is not enough to have a large presence on the internet.

“There is need to start-up a thinking process that explores the deeper capacity the internet possesses to transform Africa into a formidable digital economy,’’ he said.

Prof. Akin Mabogunje, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, ISGPP expressed happiness for the collaboration to investigate emerging problems with global expansion and unfettered use of the internet.

“It is remarkable that as of 2002 when the world held the conference on Sustainable Development in South Africa, the teledensity of most African countries including Nigeria was hardly up to1 per 100,000 of the inhabitants.

“Today, the situation has changed dramatically. Most countries in Africa are now part of the global revolution in information technology.

“Nigeria can boast of over 160 million subscribers to the mobile phone system with enormous capacity for accessing the internet,’’ he said.

Mabogunje said that the far-reaching impact of the revolution on human productive and reproductive activities were no longer issues in doubt.

NAN reports that the conference with the theme: “Strengthening Internet Policy through Theoretically Grounded Research’ will also discuss the state of internet policy innovation in Africa and Internet security.

Other issues to be discussed are economic diversification through innovation and start-ups, inclusiveness in internet access and content protection, policy and strategy action points.

Academics at the conference include Prof. Sola Aderounmu, President, Nigeria Computer Society, Prof. Ado Dan-Isa, member of Board of Trustees, Nigeria ICT Forum and Prof. Olufunmilayo Arewa.

  • Google calls for policies to enhance internet access in Nigeria

Google calls for policies to enhance internet access in Nigeria

Google, an online search tool company, on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to formulate policies to deepen internet access by Nigerians.

Mr. Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Communication and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa of the company, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the government always played a role in web content development and ensured that citizens had access to internet.

“For people to find content on the web they need to be online in the first place; we need adequate policies enabling the web search.

“Sometime ago, the Federal Government launched the broadband plan to enable many Nigerians connect online.

“Policies like that will really help.

“Out of about 68 million Nigerians internet users now, how many of them go online to read stories?

“The web helps us not only to consume information but also to export our own cultural stories,” he told NAN.

The officer commended Nollywood, the country’s movie industry, for playing a good role in exporting the stories of Nigeria.

According to him, many “You Tube” content creators produce their contents based on Nigeria’s cultural heritage and they have been able to attract target audience from all over the world.

He identified education as a great tool the government could employ to empower people in the area of acquiring digital skills and access to internet.

“Educating people on digital skills can improve the number of online entrepreneurs in the country.

“Education is also very important because it can avail people the access to the web.

“When we (Google) make our intention known to train a million people on digital skills in Africa last year, the Nigeria government was very supportive of it.

“Many young people have been able to attend the training; the government, through the office of the Vice President, organised some of the training.

“I won’t be surprised to see Nigeria’s online entrepreneurs from this initiative in the next few years if this training on digital skills is consistent.”

The communication officer said that acquiring digital skills could only be driven successfully by the government.

NAN recalls that Google, in April 2016 at a news conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, announced its commitment to train one million young Africans in digital skills in the next one year.

The training was to enable the young people, seeking to develop a digital career, become empowered in the area.

Google plans to train 6,000 media practitioners in 2017

West Africa Google says it  plans to equip more than 6, 000 media professionals in the region on the appropriate use of Google tools in 2017.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, the Head of Communications of West Africa Google made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said that Google had already trained more than 300 media professionals in West Africa in the first quarter of the year.

“We are currently working on a programme where we can train thousands of media people across West Africa.

“Every discovery usually starts with a search. People usually go online and search for ideas, innovations and what is trending in the global world.

“Google has provided a platform for young people who are seeking to bridge the knowledge gap by connecting with people of like-minds in order to make their innovation a reality,” he said.

The communication officer explained that the focus on media was because of the extreme important influence as a primary mode of communication of informing the public on new developments.

“When the media knows most other people know. Helping the media to tell stories more interesting and also helping to ensure the media has the right tools to inform others is important to Google.

“That is why we have decided to embark on a massive training procedure to equip the media with the appropriate use of utilising the Google tools to their benefits,” he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that basic data tools for media such as web basics, advanced search, trends, news verification and other social media search techniques were taught at the workshop.

He said that other tools such as storytelling with geography tools, web-stripping and data visualisation were also added to make the workshop more informative and educative.

  • Google’s Women Techmakers to train 300 females

Google’s Women Techmakers to train 300 females

Ms Britt Deyan, the People Operations Diversity Lead, Google on Friday said that Google will train 300 females in technology.

Deyan told a news conference in Lagos that the training was part of Google’s Women Techmakers summit, to be held on April 8, 2017 aimed at celebrating women in technology.

She said that Google Nigeria was hosting one of 19 global Women Techmakers summits (and the only one in Africa), which recognise and celebrate the achievements of women in the technology space.

According to her, through these events, Google aims to encourage diversity and inspire more women to take active roles in the technology space.

“The event has attracted three times as many women in technology as the first event, held in 2016, an indicator of the level of demand from the women in technology community for opportunities to engage, network and learn with, and from, each other.

“The theme for the Saturday event is ‘Tell your story’ and attendees will have a chance to listen to leading women in the technology sector, including Google Nigeria country director, Mrs. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor.

“The attendees will attend hands-on workshops for both a technical and non-technical audience, including a technical TensorFlow Workshop and a Develop Your Story Workshop, featuring improved coaches from the US.

“Other attractions on the lineup include a Fireside Chat with Kemi Adetiba, Music Video Director, moderated by Honey Ogundeyi, Founder and CEO at Fashpa.com,’’ she said.

Deyan said that 700 applications were received for the summit but 300 were selected.

Ms Mich Atagana, the Communications & Public Affairs Manager, Southern Africa, Google said that the Women Techmakers summit 2016 was an eye-opener.

Atagana said that technical skills were becoming more critical, hence, the female folks should acquire them.

She said that a lot of the female folks do not have technological role models in Africa, thereby finding it difficult to take up careers in technology.

The Google Nigeria Director said that Techmakers was Google’s global programme for women and it provided visibility, community and resources for women in technology to drive innovation and participation in the field.

Ehimuan-Chiazor said that Google achieved this by hosting events, launching resources and piloting new initiatives with communities and partners around the world, to ensure women were supported and empowered in the industry.

She said that Techmakers was one of a number of initiatives that Google was running in Africa, with the aim of developing the local ecosystem.

According to her, others initiatives included the Digital Skills initiative, which saw Google train one million African youths in digital skills between April 2016 and March 2017, which is expanding this year.

“Another is Google Launchpad – Google’s mentorship-driven global startup programme, with the goal of driving real success for startups.

“Launchpad comprises three phases – Build, Start and Accelerator. Applications for Launchpad Accelerator class 4 are now open – and for the first time, the programme will be accepting applications from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

“Google is serious about Nigeria and our strategy is to continue to help get users online by developing an accessible, relevant and sustainable internet ecosystem.

“As part of that strategy, we are helping to strengthen the developer community in Africa and empowering the next generation of developers,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Pan Atlantic University’s Lagos Business School is partnering with Google to host the summit.

The Dean of Lagos Business School, Dr Enase Okonedo, said that it was essential to recognise the need for more women in technology and leadership roles in the continent.

Okonedo said that the event presented a unique opportunity to demonstrate the school’s commitment to developing responsible leaders for Africa.

Mr. Smart Akande, the Legal Adviser, Office of SSA to the President on Sustainable Development Goals said that one of the goals of government was to remove poverty in the country and Google Digital Skills training was an avenue to do so.

According to her, making sure that there is an impact on the trainee was the next thing on the mind of Google.

She said that out of the one million trained, 500,000 were from Nigeria, attributing that to the support it got from government and the private sector.

Banjo said that going forward Google would develop an offline kit that did not have access to data, adding that local languages would be introduced more to focus on women to bridge gender gap.

She said that an impact accessing programme would also be conducted to make sure that the training they got was better utilised.

Some of the beneficiaries of the Google Digital Skills for Africa One-Million Milestone are Oluwamayowa Oshidero (Ibadan), Vanessa Morris (Lagos), Tele Williams-Aina (Lagos), Vanessa Mbaramah (Coutonu) and Segun Abodunrin (Lagos).

A trainee, Morris said: “I learnt to do things strategically and that came from the tools and skills I got from the training.”

Another trainee, Abodunrin said that the training provided a platform for him to access businesses that would help him to succeed.

Earlier, the Google Country Manager, Mrs. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, said that the web was a driver of economic growth and was transforming society as a whole.

According to her, people must be equipped through training and re-skilling to make use of the tools and take advantage of it for entrepreneurship, employment and e-inclusion.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in April 12, 2016, Google pledged to train one million Africans between the ages of 18 to 35.

It announced on Oct. 26 that it had achieved half-way mark by training 500,000 people.

“This is being hailed as a relief after remaining at N500 per dollar rate in the last few months.

He added that release of the video of the song of the late talented singer, Eric Ayobami, also trended on Google.

“Although the death of talented singer has continued to shock his friends and fans, the long-awaited video of his song, The Sound, was released during the week,’’ he said.
