  • Twitter to ban cryptocurrency adverts on its platform

Twitter Inc is to ban most advertising of cryptocurrencies on its platform, joining Facebook and Google in a clampdown on the nascent industry, the company said in a statement.

The San Francisco-based firm will this week launch a policy that prohibits advertising of initial coin offerings ( ICOs ), a form of crowd funding used to raise cash by creating new coins.

Also adverts that promote token sales and crypto wallet services, the company said in a statement.

The policy will also ban adverts from crypto-exchanges, with some limited exceptions.

Twitter said this month it was taking measures to prevent crypto-related accounts from “engaging with others in a deceptive manner”, but it has faced calls to go further after bans by Facebook and Google.

Facebook restricted crypto-related adverts in February, while Google announced a ban on March 14 that comes into force in June.

  • Google pulls out 3.2 billion bad ads from sites

Google pulled out 3.2 billion bad ads from sites in 2017, an official, Ms Jessica Stansfield, said in Lagos on Wednesday.

Stansfield, the Head of Global Product Policy, Monetised Products, Google Trust and Safety Europe, the Middle East and Africa, gave the figure during a video conference.

She said that Google pulled out the bad ads with the aid of policies, technology and people.

According to Stansfield, the figure shows more than 100 per cent increase from the 2016 figure which stood at 1.7 billion.

“In 2017, we took down more than 3.2 billion ads that violated our advertising policies, which is more than 100 bad ads per second.

“This means we are able to block the majority of bad ad experiences, such as malvertising and phishing scams before the scams impacted on people.

“We blocked 79 million ads in our network for attempting to send people to malware-laden sites.

“We equally removed 66 million “trick-to-click” ads as well as 48 million ads that were attempting to get users to install unwanted software,” she said.

The official said that digital advertising played an important role in making the web what it was.

“In order for this ads-supported free web work for everyone, it needs to be safe.

“It should also be an effective place to learn, create and advertise, but unfortunately, this is not always the case.

“To make things work and move smoothly, Google has introduced many measures to checkmate online ad violators.

“For the last 15 years, Google, in a bid to keep the ecosystem safe, has invested in people, technology and policies to help fight issues such as ad fraud, malware and content scammers,’’ she said.

Stansfield listed some of the actions that constituted the violation as scraping which had to do with copying others’ contents, tabloid cloaking – deception of someone to click on a site,  malicious activity and malware.

She said that, to remove sites that created and spread deceptive content online, Google introduced a technology called Page-level enforcement that allowed removal of over 28 million URLs monthly.

According to the official, Page-level enforcement technology allows better protection of advertisers by removing more bad ads from more sites while minimising the impact on legitimate publishers.

“This new technology has been critical in helping to scale enforcement for policies that prohibit monetisation of inappropriate and controversial content,” she said.

Stansfield said that Google was constantly updating policies as new threats emerged, adding that in 2017, 28 new advertiser policies and 20 new publisher policies were added to combat new threats and improve ad experience online.

She said that in 2018, Google would be adding several new policies to address ads in unregulated or speculative financial products such as binary options, crypto currency and foreign exchange markets.

She said that Google had already updated gambling policies to address new methods of gambling with items that had real-world value.

“Google will introduce a new certification process for rehabilitation facilities, allowing legitimate facilities in this space to connect with users in need,” she added.

  • Google launches new job Search experience

Google launches new job Search experience

American multinational technology company, Google has announced a new job Search experience that aims to help job seekers find employment opportunities.
This was announced at an event held at the country office at Ikoyi, Lagos State, hosting stakeholders like Jobberman, NGCareers, MyJobMag among others.
In her speech, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, Google Country Manager in Nigeria observed that unemployment contributes largely to the pressure that families, the society and the Nigerian nation suffer from, posing serious threat to national security.
The Google Country Chief noted that unemployment is a major problem but emphasised another problem as “Connecting the right people with right employers.”
“Job seekers say no job, employers say no employable persons. So even if the jobs are available, seekers don’t know how to find them, hence Google launches Job Search Within Google.”
“Through the job search feature on Google, when someone uses their phone or computer to search on Google for a job, they will see a streamlined experience letting them explore, research and find relevant, local job postings.
According to the search engine giant, this launch builds on its existing commitment in Sub Saharan Africa to improve economic opportunities for job seekers and employers, demonstrated through its Grow with Google initiatives.”
Recall that the Digital Skills for Africa program, which Google committed to between April 2016 and March 2017 to train 1million African youth, was achieved and surpassed.
In July 2017 this program was extended to see 10m youths trained by 2022 as well as 100,000 developers trained across the region. Ehimuan-Chiazor noted that the company took 6 startups to Silicon valley last year and will bring the initiative to Nigeria this year.
Also speaking at the launch, Afolabi Imoukhuede Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Job creation & Youth empowerment, confirmed Ehimuan-Chiazor’s observation of the unemployability cases in Nigeria.
According to him, the root causes for unemployment in Nigeria is largely unemployability. He stressed that when anyone disaggregates the unemployment rates in Nigeria, the real issues is when you begin to cascade down to youth demography.
The NPower Project Coordinator noted that the whole point on the core of technology is that a lot of things would have been difficult to achieve without technology.
“The job world is really evolving and I guess it has changed. In Nigeria, maybe our catch-up is a little slower but the job world is changed. All the job contracts I could see are traditional job contracts.
“Thanks to Google, the world is moving in a completely different direction with new and emerging skills that are not even thought within the four walls of the university.
“This is clearly an initiative, and a project that speaks very closely to the heart of what we do. Because it is a problem that we must attack head-on, and platforms like this, alliances and networks like this are the sustainable ways by which we can give a lasting solution to it.
“This project is what the federal government is proud to endorse. We must commend Google for what they do. We recognise what technology means to us in Nigeria and what it means to the world.
“We have the assets. The greater number of our population is the youths demography. Our focus is how to turn these our youths into an asset and not a liability,” Imoukhuede said.
Ehimuan-Chiazor further added that fnding employment is still very difficult for many people. This new job Search experience will help the millions of Nigerians searching for new opportunities.
“We believe that the web allows anyone, anywhere, of any age, to grow their business, learn the skills they need to get a job, to grow in their career, become an entrepreneur or developer. This new jobs Search tool will be a key driver for connecting job seekers to open opportunities, helping more people to Grow with Google,” she summed.
What the launch means is that job seekers in Nigeria,  South Africa and Kenya will be able to use the new job search experience to quickly and easily find opportunities suited to them, through an immersive experience that lets them explore jobs from across the web and refine their search to meet their specific needs.
Similarly, users will able to view at-a-glance details about the posting, such as job title, location, whether it’s full-time, part-time or an internship, as well as detailed information should a job be of interest. Using Google Maps integration, job seekers can search for jobs any place they can find on the map, and if they’re signed in, they can even see how long it would take to commute to the job from home through Google maps.
Searching for a new job can take time, so if you step away from your job search, Google has made it easy to pick up where you left off as well as stay in the loop on opportunities that are right for you. Simply push the “get alerts” button to get email notifications when new jobs matching your search appear.
“As this is an open ecosystem, Google is inviting all job sites, platforms and employers — big and small — to integrate with us and make their jobs eligible to display in the new jobs search experience.  With Google’s newly released open documentation, any jobs provider is able to integrate its content through open structured schema.org web markup standards Google supports,” the tech firm said.
To optimise the feature and make it more useful, Google is working with a broad and growing cross-section of partners, such as the Federal Government, Jobberman, NGCareers, MyJobMag and other job resource websites in Nigeria. These collaborations ensure Google is able to present job postings content accurately, as soon as it is posted, to exactly the people that will find it most relevant.

Google pulls out 1.7 billion bad ads from sites

Google pulled out 1.7 billion bad ads from sites with machine learning technology in 2016, an official, Ms Jenn Kaiser, has said.

Kaiser, the Head of Ads PR, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Google and YouTube, gave the figure on Monday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

She spoke on “Good Advertising, Our Products and Policies’’ at a Google Online Advertising Conference for Media Personnel.

According to the official, some of the bad ads are misleading and redirect someone to other sites.

Kaiser assured the global business community that policy enforcement by Google would ensure that bad ads would not infiltrate sites easily.

She said that Google would provide tools that would ensure good decision making for advertisers and publishers involved in online ads.

“Google policies are evolving; this is to ensure that bad ads do not infiltrate sites easily.

“This has to do with regulation changes from various countries, legal and user safety market trends and technology.

“The changes are made through investigations, user feedbacks and market trends that have to do with emerging businesses,” she said.

Kaiser said that the policy would be valuable and transparent for it to make the required impact.

The official warned that one could be blocked from the Google ecosystem if seen as a constant defaulter, although access could be returned later.

According to the official, by February 15, Google Chrome would have a feature that ensures good ads on sites in the North America and Europe.

  • Google honours Keshi with Doodle

    Google honours Keshi with Doodle

Google on Tuesday marked the 56th birthday of the late Nigerian football icon, Stephen Keshi, with Doodle.

A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages that commemorates holidays, events, achievements and people.

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, made the assertion during a chat with Google in Lagos.

According to Kola-Ogunlade, Stephen Keshi was born in Azare, Bauchi State, Nigeria, and was a member of the famed St. Finbarrs College Football Academy of 1977.

He said that he was later called up for the Junior Eagles and subsequently the Super Eagles in preparation for the 1980 African Cup of Nations competition.

“Football took Keshi all over the world as he played across Africa, Europe, and the U.S.

“Known affectionately as `Big Boss’, he was beloved as a player for Nigeria’s national team, where he earned more than 60 caps and for representing the country at the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations,’’ he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that after his great success as a player, Keshi moved into coaching, the next phase of his career, adding that when the “Big Boss’’ became the coach of the Togo national team, he brought his trademark passion with him.

The Google manager said that against the odds, Keshi led Togo all the way to a qualifying spot in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

“He achieved his personal dream in 2011, when he became an indigenous national coach of the Super Eagles, cementing his place in African and world football history.

“Coaching the Nigerian team, Keshi won the African Cup of Nations in 2013, and in 2014 became the first African coach of an African nation to make it to the knockout round of a World Cup.

“Keshi is one of the only two men to win the Africa Cup of Nations as both a player and a manager, a testament to his wit, talent, and love for the sport.

“A big cheer for this football legend on what would have been his 56th birthday!’’ he said.

  • Google pulls YouTube from Amazon devices, escalating spat

Google pulls YouTube from Amazon devices, escalating spat

Rare public spat in the technology industry escalated when Google said it would block its video streaming application YouTube from two Amazon.com Inc devices.

Google also criticized the online retailer for not selling Google hardware, Media reports on Wednesday.

The feud is the latest in Silicon Valley to put customers in the crossfire of major competitors.

Amazon and Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, square off in many areas, from cloud computing and online search, to selling voice-controlled gadgets like the Google Home and Amazon Echo Show.

The stakes are high: many in the technology industry expect that interacting with computers by voice will become widespread, and it is unclear if Amazon, Google or another company will dominate the space.

Amazon’s suite of voice-controlled devices has outsold Google’s so far, according to a study by research firm eMarketer from earlier this year.

In a statement, Google said, ”Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make (its) Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of (our sister company) Nest’s latest products.

“Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon,” Google said.

Amazon said in a statement, “Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website.”

It said it hoped to resolve the issue with Google as soon as possible but customers could access YouTube through the internet – not an app – on the devices in the meantime.

The break has been a long time coming.

Amazon kicked the Chromecast, Google’s television player, off its retail website in 2015, along with Apple Inc’s TV player.

Amazon had explained the move by saying it wanted to avoid confusing customers who might expect its Prime Video service to be available on devices sold by Amazon.

Amazon and Apple mended ties earlier this year when it was announced Prime Video would come to Apple TV; not so with Google.

In September, Google cut off YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show, which had displayed videos on its touchscreen without video recommendations, channel subscriptions and other features.

Amazon later reintroduced YouTube to the device.

However, the voice commands it added violated the use terms and on Tuesday Google again removed the service.

The Fire TV loses access to its YouTube app on Jan. 1, Google said.

Amazon has sold that device for longer than the Echo Show, meaning more customers may now be affected. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Google launches app to reduce mobile data usage

Google has launched Datally, a smart and simple Android app that helps smartphone users understand, control and save mobile data. Datally works on all smartphones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher, and is available for download on Google Play Store globally.

Datally was developed to help solve one of the biggest concerns of smartphone users around the world, and especially in Nigeria – worries about data usage. During extensive user research around the world, we found that many smartphone users worry about running out of data, especially the new generation of internet users known as the ‘Next Billion Users.’ Not only are they constantly thinking about data balances, but they do not understand where their data is going, nor do they feel like they can control allocating data to the apps they really care about.

The app will empower users to manage data more effectively on their smartphones through four key features: Data Saver: Apps frequently use data in the background for updating content and information. Datally’s Data Saver feature lets users control data on an app-by-app basis, so that data only goes to apps they care about; data saver bubble: once data saver is turned on, Datally’s Data Saver bubble will appear when a user goes into an app. Whenever that app uses data, the data saver bubble will show the current rate of data usage, and users can easily choose to block that app’s data use if things start to get out of control. The Data Saver bubble is like a speedometer for mobile data.

The others are personalised alerts:  Datally alerts users when apps start consuming a lot of data, and it allows them to see how much data they’ve used on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis; and WiFi finder. There are times when users want to use more data than they have on their mobile plans, such as when they want to watch HD videos. Public WiFi is an important access point for high-bandwidth connectivity. Datally’s Find WiFi feature reveals the networks nearby, rated by the Datally community. Once connected, users can rate the WiFi networks based on their own experience.

Speaking at the launch of Datally in Lagos, Google Nigeria Country Director, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor,   said: “For the last few years, our Next Billion Users team has been doing a lot of research on the ground in fast growing Internet countries like Nigeria, We have found that data is a major constraint for the next billion users. Introducing Datally into the Nigerian smartphone market will help users understand how to control their mobile data better.

“Google tested Datally in the Philippines for most of 2017, and the insights from the product tests there shaped the final app. The user research showed that people testing the app saved up to 30 per cent of their mobile data, depending on the way they used Datally.”

  • Atiku ‘s defection from APC, UNILORIN fake admission list dominate Google search

Atiku ‘s defection from APC, UNILORIN fake admission list dominate Google search

The defection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) and the University of Ilorin fake admission list dominated searches on the internet search engine, Google, this week.

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, disclosed this in a dispatch on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, this week’s top trending search terms on Google Nigeria were dominated by both foreign and national new items.

“Abubakar, on Tuesday resigned from the ruling APC and plans to seek the opposition Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) presidential ticket to run for President in 2019.

“In his statement of resignation, he cited maltreatment by the party and the failure of the party to live up to the expectation of Nigerian youth as one of the major reasons for his resignation.

“Interested Nigerians raced to Google search to read his full statement of resignation,’’ Kola-Ogunlade said.

The Google manager said that the University of Ilorin came on the search light when a fake admission list was circulated on the social media.

“The management of UniIlorin has urged candidates seeking admission into the institution for the 2017/2018 academic session to patiently wait for the release of the authentic admission list by the Institution.

“The university in a statement on Tuesday said that its attention had been drawn to a fake admissions list currently circulating on social media, and urged students not to fall prey to admission fraudsters.

“The institution has directed students to check their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) portal for admissions’ updates.

“Concerned students raced to Google to search for more information about the anticipated admissions list,’’ he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the rhythm and blues singer, Bankole Wellington and wife, Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi trended when Banky W mistakenly posted picture of his naked wife on social media.

“On Nov. 25, R&B singer, Banky W and Nollywood actress, Etomi tied the knot in a ceremony held in Cape Town, South Africa.

“A day after, Banky W wanted to give a shout-out to his fans, by showing them their honeymoon lodge and Zebra right outside his bedroom window but, unknown to him he posted an image on social media which had his naked wife in the background.

“The image went viral before the mistake was noticed. Banky W deleting the image has not stopped fans from searching for more details, making ‘Banky W’ a top trending search term on Google,’’ he said.

On the international scene, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement got people’s attention online.

“The Prince of Wales, Charles announced the engagement of his second son, Prince Harry to his American girlfriend, actress Meghan Markle on Monday at Kensington Palace.

“The happy couple who will tie the knot by spring next year granted their first interview as an engaged couple to the BBC, where Prince Harry described how he proposed to Meghan.

“Since the announcement, controversy has arisen about Meghan’s background, which made her name a top trending search term on Google this week,’’ he said.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the Brazilian professional footballer, Robson de Souza, commonly known as Robinho, was sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of gang rape.

He said that the Brazilian striker was sentenced by a court in Milan for being one of a six-people involved in the assault of a 22-year-old woman at a Milanese nightclub in 2013.

Kola-Ogunlade said that Robinho’s current club, Atletico Mineiro, had declined to comment on the sentence, stating they would only speak through the team’s lawyers, if necessary.

The news of Robinho’s sentence has made his name a top trending search term on Google, he said.

Google Trends launched in May 2006, allows one to see how popular, search terms and its demography have been over time on Google.

  • Google introduces Datally, a mobile data-saving app

Google introduces Datally, a mobile data-saving app

Google has inaugurated a new product known as  ‘Datally’, a mobile data-saving app that helps one to understand, control and save data  into the emerging market.

The Google Country Manager, Mrs Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor in a media briefing in Lagos, said that with Datally, one could save and do more with data.

An emerging market is a country that has some characteristics of a developed market, but does not meet standards to be a developed market.

This includes countries that may become developed markets in the future.

According to Ehimuan-Chiazor, the app is a technology built to tackle some of the challenges being faced by internet users of the emerging market.

“Some of the characteristics of the emerging market are their aspirations for better life, appetite to lift family out of poverty, and highly mobile among others.

“They face some challenges such as; huge percentage of people who use low earned phones, connectivity and localised content which forces them to either use airplane mode, rationing, or tethering to save data.

“Datally, the new data management app will help them understand how data is being used on the phone and help to control and save it,’’ she said.

According to her, Datally can also help one to understand where data is going, to save up to 30 per cent of data, and turn-on data saver bubble to see a real-time speedometer of one’s data.

She said the new app could also help one find great Wi-Fi nearby, and rate Wi-Fi networks among others.

“Datally shows you how much data you have used on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis and alerts you when apps consume a lot of data.

“Over time, Datally will learn your usage patterns and offer more recommendations to save data,’’ she said.

Ehimuan-Chiazor said that apps frequently use data in the background to update content and information and one may not know it happens.

She added that Datally’s Data Saver feature would turn off background data for these non-essential functions as well as let one manage data usage on an app-by-app basis.

According to her, Data Saver bubble will be used to block background data and track real-time data usage, whatever app one is using at a particular time, it works like a speedometer for ones data.

She said that one could also block data with one tap if data usage gets out of control.

The country manager said finding quality public Wi-Fi could be challenging, adding that within the range of a public network, Datally’s Wi-Fi finder would notify one and help you connect.

She said that directions were also given for one to be able to locate the Wi-Fi and once one was connected to a network, it was important to rate it in order to help others in the Datally community find great Wi-Fi.

“Datally app takes about 6MB of space, easy on ones phone’s storage, works on all phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher, and it is available globally on the Google Play Store,’’ she said.
