  • GOtv to air 176th El Clasico on Sunday

GOtv subscribers will have an opportunity on Sunday, to watch the world’s biggest club football rivalry when La Liga champions, Barcelona, host their rivals and UEFA Champions League finalists, Real Madrid, in the famed El Clasico at the Camp Nou.

The game, which is the 176th meeting between both teams, will be broadcast live on SuperSport Select 4 (channel 34) at 7.30pm to GOtv MAX subscribers.

The game will also see two of football’s biggest talents, Lionel Messi and  Cristiano Ronaldo, going head to head.  Barcelona legend and captain, Andres Iniesta, will also be aiming to bow out on a high in what would be his last El Clasico game, after announcing that he will quit the club at the end of the season.

Despite Barcelona already crowned champions following their 4-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna in their last match, the clash with Real Madrid is sure to be a blockbuster given the decades of rivalry and the declaration by Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, which Barca would not be given a guard of honour.

Following a 0-3 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu in the last El Clasico, Real Madrid would be gunning for revenge, having also recently qualified for the UEFA Champions League final by seeing off the threat from German giants, Bayern Munich.

Barcelona, on the other hand, will be seeking more relief for their quarter-final exit in the UEFA Champions League by beating their rivals to complete an El Clasico double.

Speaking on the game’s coverage, Martin Mabutho, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria, said: “MultiChoice Nigeria is thrilled to bring football’s greatest club rivalry to Nigerians. The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid goes back decades, with both clubs boasting some of the most passionate fans around the world. Nigeria is no different, as the country has one of the biggest representations of both clubs. The game is widely regarded as one of the biggest in league football globally, and our GOtv viewers can tune in to GOtv Max this weekend to catch all of the action.”

  • GoTV leads in marketing innovations

    GoTV leads in marketing innovations

    GoTV kick-starts pay-per-day

In the Pay TV sector,  GoTV is leading in terms of marketing inno-vations. The Pay TV platform launched “GoTV Lite” which offers pay-per-day at  the rate of N13. The platform is also currently running #GoTVMax which offers live LaLiga matches. On  October 24, #GoTVwAWU was launched; it offers special channels and rewards to subscribers. The crescendo of GoTV’s brand innovations was on  October 26, when it  brought the European Premier League’s trophy to Lagos. On  October 29, Nigerians were able to sight, touch and take a selfie with the EPL trophy, courtesy of GoTV. It is getting exciting.

    Kwese TV builds traction

However, Kwese TV stole the show with the Nigerian-British Antony Joshua’s victorious boxing match against Cameroonian Carlos Takam, which was aired live on the free-to-air sports Channel of Kwese TV known as Kwese Sports. Nigerians were able to follow the match and the company also live-streamed the boxing match in Sagamu, the hometown of the boxing champion.

    TSTV delays operations

The much-awaited commercial operations of TSTV postponed till November 1 2017 did not begin on that particular day. And fans of the indigenous Pay TV brand took to social media to decry the company’s failure to keep to promises. The social media account of TSTV tried to handle the situation by releasing a statement.

In the statement, Telecom Satellite Limited, owners of TSTV, said the operations could not commence due to an exercise “to ensure the proper monitoring and evaluation of the signal strength”. The company also explained that “the accreditation of selected dealers is ongoing in addition to the full branding of the dealers’ outlets across the country”. Nigerians who were initially excited about a Nigerian brand venturing into the Pay TV business are expressing their disappointments and worries over the delay of operations.

  • TSTV vs DSTV: StarTimes pay per day, coincidence or strategy?

TSTV vs DSTV: StarTimes pay per day, coincidence or strategy?

When StarTimes took to its official Twitter handle @Startimes_Ng  to announce that it was commencing Pay Per Day service in a series of tweets, most DigitalTV subscribers knew they haven’t seen the end of the announcement just yet.

No surprises as the news was well received by many Nigerians online and social media, with many celebrating what they felt was a move forced by the fiasco of TSTV. For so many Nigerians, they have waited for a day when the Globacom of the Pay TV sub-sector of the broadcast industry will make an entry.

But many questions remained unanswered. Questions like why now? Why StarTimes? Why November 1st? Why N60 daily? All of these have been asked on social media with very little answers available as the company is yet to issue an official statement with details of the plan.

    Why now?

Some people have argued that StarTimes has been in operations for over 7 years and is no longer a newcomer to the industry. So why is the pay per day announcement coming now?

Why not a year or 2 earlier, especially since the company claims to have been offering this service in other African countries. Why was the implementation in Nigeria delayed?

    Why StarTimes

Truthfully, if any cable TV operator was expected to introduce the par per day following the pledges and promises of TSTV, it would have been DSTV or Go-TV, since the agitation of most Nigerians was heard towards them due to perceived high pricing and alleged monopoly in the industry.

For most stakeholders, subscribers, critics and the ordinary Nigerian, StarTimes was not the problem for them, in fact, nobody joined issues with StarTimes when it came to providing affordable entertainment for Nigerians, partly because their pricing was fair enough.

So, when the announcement was made that fateful morning, it came as a good shock on the morning of October 19 when the announcement came from StarTimes, an announcement that set social media agog, one made on the same day Kwese TV, a new kid on the block was having their official launch press conference. Was this deliberate, to reduce the media share of voice Kwese receives on the day they launch or just another coincidence?

    Why November 1st?

Really, why November 1st? Isn’t this the same day the other operator promised to launch? Something is fishy here. Or is this just another coincidence?

    StarTimes Demand Soars!

Since the announcement was made on October 19th, the demand for StarTimes and general interest in the company has risen dramatically. Some social media users went as far as taking pictures of themselves purchasing the decoders at subsidised rates and with a promise to enjoy 1-month free view.

An inquiry from 2 dealer partners in Lagos mainland indicated a 9% hike in product demand. Can one attribute this to the new pay per view package or just the ripple effect of the publicity the company has enjoyed in past week?

    Why 60 Naira Daily?

While we celebrate, let’s ask ourselves questions before we accept a greek gift. Why so cheap? N60 is a very affordable rate by any standard. These days, N60 cannot even buy you a bottle of drink in traffic or any store. Why would StarTimes offer their daily subscription at such a cheap rate? is there more to it than meets the eye? A quick check on the company website reveals little information about the new package. Why so much secrecy?

In the meantime, all we can do is wait and see what details are made available on November 1st. It is my hope that this is not just another appetiser or publicity stunt, something similar to what we experienced in September when TSTV came with bags of undelivered promises.

12th Gotv Boxing :It was my toughest bout, Oto admits

Despite maintaining his career record against Israel “Money Machine” Kammwamba of Malawi at the GOtv Boxing Night 12, Joseph ‘Joe Boy’ Oto has admitted that the victory against the Malawian was the toughest in his two-year professional career.

In a tightly-contested bout, Oto defeated Israel “Money Machine” Kammwamba of Malawi to make history as the first ever winner of the Commonwealth Africa lightweight title and also, emerged the second runner-up with N500,000 cash prize.

But the pugilist told NationSport yesterday that the bout was not as easy as most fans witnessed it.

“I must tell you that it was the toughest bout of my career because my opponent was a very technically sound boxer. He never gave up easily as he was all over me throughout the encounter. I never really expected the bout to go all length because I thought I could easily knock him out early into the fight. But I have also realised that a good boxer should not just focus on knocking out his opponent but just focusing on fighting till the end. I have also learnt a lot from the fight because it got to a stage, I was a bit tired. I must also credit my coach for his support and motivation throughout the bout,” he said.

Oto who will be aiming for the Commonwealth title later in the year said he hopes to return to training next week in preparation for the bigger task in December. “I am going back to training from next week in readiness for the main Commonwealth title bout which I believe will be against a tougher opponent and for me I need to correct some of the mistakes I noticed in my last bout. I am going to be fully ready for the title fight in December,: Oto added.

He however, commended the management of WEO ALLSPORTS, who are the managing firm catering for the boxer alongisde Olaide Fijabi.

Subscribers protest against DSTV, GOTV services in Bayelsa

Subscribers of DSTV and GOTV services owned by Multichoice Nigeria Limited, Wednesday, besieged the firm’s outlets in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, complaining of poor services.

The aggrieved pay TV users lamented that they had been denied access to their preferred channels days after renewing their subscriptions.

They further decried poor reception signals and lack of compensation despite inconveniences and loss of viewing hours caused technical hitches from the company.

Subscribers now pay N14,700 for DSTV Premium bouquet, Compact Plus N9,900, Compact N6,300 and Family N3,800.

It was learnt that the angry customers who stormed the DSTV offices in Kpansia, Opolo and Okutukutu areas of the state capital, demanded refund of their monies.

One of them, Betty Sotonye said: “I came here (Kpansia office) to renew subscription on Saturday but until Wednesday, I and my family cannot watch DSTV. What kind of nonsense is this?”.

  • ‘GOtv is part of our strategy to contribute to Nigeria’s digital migration’

‘GOtv is part of our strategy to contribute to Nigeria’s digital migration’

Reacting to this, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, has said that the company is very excited about the role of GOtv in various homes. He made this known when he was reacted to the pay TV subscribers’ testimony award recently.

According to him “It is a true testament of our vision to transform the pay television landscape in the country and make digital television services a must – have for all Nigerians. GOtv forms part of our broad-based strategy to contribute to Nigeria’s digital migration via sensible infrastructure investment and competitive service delivery. We realised that when people think of digital television they immediately imagine it has to be expensive, but this is not the case with GOtv which offers great family entertainment at affordable prices,” he said.

During the subscriber’s testimony award, Mr. Emmanuel Oshin, a Lagos State civil servant, his television viewing experience is akin to that of a guest at a buffet table, offering so much to choose from. A GOtv subscriber since 2012, Oshin is thrilled by the diversity of exciting content offered by the pay-tv service. GOtv, he said, gives his family exciting times together, with something for every member to enjoy.

“GOtv gets us spending time together. Channels such as ZeeWorld and Africa Magic are for everybody in my family. I love watching films, while my kids love watching cartoons, which are very entertaining.

Every member of the family is taken care of,” he said.

His experience mirrors that of Mr. Bankole Ezekiel, also a civil servant and a GOtv subscriber since 2014. Mr. Ezekiel believes that the biggest benefit provided by the service is quality family time.

Members of his family, he disclosed, are huge fans of the AfricaMagic channels. He is especially excited about the two free additional channels and airtime bonus made available to him through the GOtv WOW reward promo. “I remember that I called my wife with the last airtime bonus I earned and we spent a long time speaking. These days, before my subscription expires, she would have called me to renew it.
