    Jigawa: Capital projects, human development takes lead in N901.8b estimate

    Governor Umar Namadi yesterday presented a N901.84 billion proposed budget for 2026 to the Jigawa State House of Assembly, describing it as a plan to accelerate his administration’s development agenda.

    Titled “Budget of Innovation and Transformation for Greater Jigawa II,” the proposal, anchored on the state’s updated Comprehensive Development Framework and 12-Point Agenda, builds on the 2025 fiscal framework.

    The budget prioritises capital spending, with N693.4 billion (77%) allocated to capital projects aimed at expanding infrastructure, boosting agriculture, improving social services, and strengthening human capital.

    Education also received priority with 26 per cent of the total budget allocated to the sector to improve learning outcomes, expand tertiary education, and upgrade facilities.

    The agricultural sector got N75 billion for food security, irrigation, mechanisation, market development, livestock services, and youth agribusiness programmes. The government plan to implement AfDB-supported agricultural transformation projects.

    The power sector was allocated N50.7 billion for grid extension, rural electrification, renewable energy projects, and solarisation of public facilities, including streetlights in 40 local government headquarters.

    Road construction and rehabilitation were also central to the plan, with major works lined up across all emirates. Priority projects include Kafin Hausa-Gafasa-Jabo, Guri-Margadu, Gwiwa-Daurawa-Shafe, and Harbo Tsohuwa-Gilima, alongside bridge works and tertiary road upgrades by SREMA.

    Other key allocations include N12.3 billion for water and sanitation, N25.4 billion for housing and urban development, N35.4 billion for environmental management, N27.2 billion for secondary healthcare, N20.1 billion for primary healthcare, and N38.6 billion for tertiary education.

    Youth, sports and culture received N2.8 billion.

    Namadi said the budget also incorporated measures to strengthen governance, improve institutional efficiency, and enhance transparency.

    The consolidated budget for the 27 local government councils stands at N288.85 billion, including N137.59 billion earmarked for capital projects such as mass housing, irrigation schemes, nutrition programmes, Tsangaya support and efforts to reduce out-of-school children.

    The governor described the budget as realistic and aligned with the state’s long-term development goals. He urged the Assembly to ensure quick passage to enable early implementation of priority projects.

    Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Abdul Hamid Malamadori, has expressed confidence that Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State will secure a second term in office with ease, regardless of the number of contenders.

    Senator Malamadori, who represents Jigawa North East Senatorial District, gave the assurance on Tuesday during the Citizens and Government Engagement Programme held in Birniwa Local Government Area of the state.

    “There is no vacancy for Jigawa number one seat in the coming 2027 general election, because Namadi has already gotten it,” he declared.

    According to the senator, Governor Umar Namadi’s unprecedented performance is enough to allow him do second term.

    “The governor’s human development, education and economic reforms have given him second term come 2027,” Senator Mallamdori said.

    He added: “Today, Agricultural growth has taken its tolls in Jigawa just as youths and women empowerment has become one of the top priorities of the Namadi administration.

    “But, despite all these achievements, Governor Namadi, remains humble and focused, he still refuses to rest or go about beating his chest; rather he is looking on many areas that are yet to feel the touch of his administration.”

    The Senator advised those ”dreaming” of the number one seat in Jigawa state within the APC other other political parties to jettison their ambitions as there will be no vacancy in the Jigawa Government House come 2027 polls.

    The Senator explained that the governor deserves to be re-elected to complete his project of building “a mega agrarian state.”

    “Let me advised every politician in this State to rally behind Governor Namadi and support his re-election bid, and stop dreaming of taking over his job.

    “Governor, Umar Namadi is doing very well, therefore, there is no need for anybody to think of challenging him in the 2027 race, because doing so would be tantamount to wasting time.

    “Governor Namadi deserves to serve his second term come 2027 because of his outstanding performance,” Senator Mallamdori said.

    APC national youth leader commiserates with Namadi over mother’s, son’s deaths

    The National Youth Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dayo Israel, has commiserated with Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi over the deaths of his mother, Hajiya Maryam, and first son, Abdulwahab.

    Israel, who sent his commiseration with the governor in a statement yesterday in Abuja, described the incident as tragic and unfortunate.

    The condolence message was issued on behalf of APC youths across the country and the Diaspora.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abdulwahab died in a car crash on December 26, last year.

    The incident occurred barely 24 hours after Hajiya Maryam Namadi’s death and burial.

    Israel said: “We, the Progressives’ Youths, are deeply saddened by the demise of our beloved mother, Hajiya Maryam Namadi, and our dear brother, Abdulwahab Umar Namadi, who died recently.

    “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the immediate family and relatives of the governor.

    “While the party is still mourning the loss of our dear mother, I was shocked to receive the heartbreaking news of our brother’s unbelievable demise too.

    “Who are we to question Allah? We can only pray to Allah to grant them Al-Jannatul Fir’daus and give the governor and his family the strength to bear the irreplaceable losses.”

    The Chairman, Southern Governors Forum (SGF), Governor Dapo Abiodun, has expressed condolences to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State over the loss of his son, Abdulwahab.

    Abduwahab was involved in an auto crash on the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road on Thursday barely 24 hours after he lost his mother, Hajia Maryam Namadi.

    In a statement he issued on behalf of the forum and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta yesterday, Abiodun said the tragic events coming in quick succession could break anyone’s spirit.

    He, however, added that the forum takes solace in the life that the deceased lived, urging the bereaved governor to take solace in the fact that his loved ones are in the bosom of Allah.

    “Members of the Southern Governors’ Forum and I can hardly find the words to describe the devastating news of the loss of our brother’s son, Abdulwahab, in a road accident.

    “This happened just a day after the death of his very dear mother, Alhaja Maryam Namadi.

    “Abdulwahab Umar Namadi, a young man full of life, died in a motor accident along the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road on Thursday.

    “No doubt, these extremely tragic events, coming in quick succession and at a period of the Yuletide festivities when His Excellency and his loved ones were no doubt looking forward to the New Year with joy and excitement, can break anyone’s spirit.

    “By a cruel twist of fate, Abdulwahab, who was mourning the loss of his dear grandmother, lost his life in a road accident.

    “We are completely heartbroken. We commiserate with the governor and people of Jigawa and pray for the repose of the souls of these very dear loved ones.

    “May the Almighty Allah, the Most Merciful and the Most Benevolent grant them Aljanat Firdaus. May He comfort His Excellency and members of the Namadi family at this terrible hour of trial.

    “On behalf of my brothers in the forum, I offer our deepest condolences to His Excellency and pray that he will have the fortitude to bear these sad events, knowing that his loved ones are in the bosom of Allah,” the statement read in parts.

    Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi’s first son, 24-year-old Abdulwahab, yesterday died in an accident.

    Abdulwahab’s death occurred a day after the governor’s mother, Mrs. Maryam Namadi, died at a private hospital in Kano at the age of 90.

    It was learnt that the vehicle conveying Abdulwahab and his friends from Kafin Hausa to Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, lost control and summersaulted. Survivors of the accident are said to be receiving treatment at a hospital.

    A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Gumel, confirmed Abdulwahab’s death.

    It reads: “With a heavy heart, Governor Umar Namadi announces the passing of his beloved son, Abdulwahab Umar Namadi.

    “The 24-year-old departed this world on Thursday, December 26, 2024, due to a ghastly motor accident along the Dutse-Kafin-Hausa Road.

    “The burial rites are currently underway in Kafin Hausa town in accordance with Islamic traditions.”

    The statement said Abdulwahab is survived by his parents, Governor Namadi and his wife, as well as his many siblings.

    A large crowd of mourners and sympathisers had gathered at the Kafin Hausa Central Mosque on Wednesday to offer funeral prayers for Mrs. Maryam Namadi.

    The deceased was laid to rest in the Kafin Hausa cemetery in the presence of family members, mourners, friends, and dignitaries from far and near.

    A matriarch of her family and a figure of immense respect in the community, she left behind a legacy of kindness and humility.

    She is survived by her two sons, Governor Namadi and Dr. Abdullahi Namadi.

    The funeral rites were witnessed by eminent Nigerians, including Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Jigawa State Deputy Governor Aminu Usman, Jigawa State House of Assembly speaker Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, the emirs of Dutse, Hadejia and Machina.

    Others were members of the National Assembly and those of the Jigawa State House of Assembly as well as community leaders, government officials, many residents and mourners from various walks of life.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed heartfelt condolences to Governor Namadi on the passing of his mother.

    Jigawa Gov suspends Special Adviser over minimum wage claim

    Jigawa Governor Umar Namadi has suspended his Special Adviser  on Salary and Pension, Alhaji Bashir Ado Kazaure, with immediate effect.

    Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, announced this in a statement. 

    Kazaure was suspended for his alleged involvement in a purported media report claiming that Governor Namadi has approved N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the State, which the aide later denied  in an audio clip sent to a radio station.

    The SSG also announced the setting up of a five- man committee to investigate the source, actual content and motive behind the statement.

    According to him: “The Jigawa State Government viewed with serious concern a statement circulating in various sections of the Media alleging that His Excellency Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi,  has approved N70, 000 as new minimum wage”.

    “This sounds embarrassing and pre-mature as the Committee headed by Head of the State Civil Service, set up by the Government to advise on the appropriate wage is yet to complete its assignment and submit report.

    “Accordingly, the State Government is compelled to set up a Committee to investigate the source, actual content of the statement and the motive behind it”.

    The Committee, he said, is to be chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Bello Abdulkadir Fanini while the  Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmed; Commissioner of Health, Dr. Muhammmad Abdullahi Kainuwa; Permanent Secretary Establishment and Service Matters, Muhammad Yahaya Jabo will serve as members with Permanent Secretary REPA, Abba Mustapha Yola as Secretary of the committee, which is given two weeks to submit report.
