    Governor to reposition media

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said his administration is leveraging on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to reposition the state-owned media, to align it with global media trend.

He spoke when he received the management of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), led by its Director-General, Alhaji Is’haq Kawu, at the Government House, Benin.

Obaseki said plans had been finalised on how to reposition the state-owned broadcast media.

He assured the NBC that his administration will support it in the digital switch-over.

The governor said his administration would procure state-of-the-art digital equipment, upgrade skills and solicit NBC’s support in achieving goals.

Kawu described the rich cultural heritage of Benin kingdom as unique, saying with the digital switch-over, stations would package and beam the country’s rich cultural heritage to the outside world.

He implored Obaseki to assist in solving the flood experienced by NBC zonal office.

Group assures governor of 3m votes

A group of young Lagosians, under the aegis of Itesiwaju Ipinle Eko Vanguard (IIEV), has assured Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode of three million votes in next year’s election.

The group, which was founded to propagate Ambode’s ideals and achievements, is led by Seyi Bamigbade as its General Coordinator and Olusegun Olulade, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Bamigbade announced the promise of 3 million votes while inaugurating the United Christian Family Initiative (U.C.F.I) chapter of IEV yesterday at Oshodi Local Government secretariat’s Legislative Hall.

Mr. Israel Alagbe, a commissioner in the State Civil Service Commission, praised Ambode for his achievements in many spheres.

He recalled that when he was the Executive Secretary in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area, there were security challenges, which Ambode quickly solved.

Bamigbade said: “We are not here for a jamboree but to do an immense work and make you all to go out to your various units, wards and local government areas to mobilise people from age 18 and above towards ensuring our 3 million votes in 2019.”

Olulade said: “As from today, UCFI has become the solidarity physique of the Itesiwaju Ipinle Eko Vanguard.”

Another Lagos lawmaker, Olushola Shokunle (Oshodi constituency), said going by massive transformation in his area, Oshodi had become “an avenue like Lagos Island”.

  • A governor at work

    A governor at work

It was an operation conceived in utmost secrecy and executed at dawn when many were still snoring in bed. By the time they woke up, the huge storey building had been levelled, flattened.

The building used to be the home of a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna. It was the symbol of the defiance of some party men, who are opposed to Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s style. His Excellency was alleged to have personally led the operation. This may not be far from the truth, considering the clinical manner in which it was executed and the delicate nature of the assignment.

A few days ago, the Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi- led faction suspended El-Rufai and some of his aides. It was the climax of many months of bitter bickering between the factions.  Famous for his reticence, El-Rufai was calm. But, can a ship  have two captains? Will any governor worthy of the Executive Mansion tolerate such insubordination and calculated insult?

Just as the Hunkuyi faction began to gloat over its success, the governor deployed an old strategy of his that has never failed. The bulldozer moved in. Now, Hunkuyi and his men are grumbling like a child stopped from sucking on his thumb.

So incensed at the action was Senator Shehu Sani that he told the Senate: “Governor El-Rufai is an affliction on Kaduna State. He is a curse to us. We want to call on Buhari to caution his son. If this crisis is not nipped in the bud, it will grow into something bigger. We in Kaduna State cannot accommodate somebody who has the tendencies of Adolf Hitler, Mobutu Sese Seko and Nebuchadnezzar.”

The Senator recalled that, exactly one year ago, His Excellency’s bulldozer smashed  APC Vice Chairman (Northwest) Inuwa Abdukadir’s house.

Sani is not alone. Also complaining are those who know nothing about governance, state policy and power. They are crying like hired mourners who must outdo the bereaved. They say El-Rufai is inhumane, wicked and destructive.

Does El-Rufai deserve the name calling and abuses? Why won’t anybody consider the peace that has suddenly descended on Kaduna since this demolition and many others? Why won’t anybody praise his mastery of this strategy as the final solution to stubborn problems? Or the governor’s inventive ability.  Instead, they talk about “his huge capacity for mischief, his unbridled ambition, his tempestuous and abrasive mannerism”.

This is not the first time His Excellency has been excoriated for demolishing a property. He was harassed and cursed in Abuja when he was minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). So bad was the situation that he had to face an inquiry after his tenure. He was accused of grabbing other people’s land and allocating choice plots to his wife, concubines, girlfriends, friends and babies. Not a word did he deny. In fact, he told his inquisitors that he acted in the public interest and dared his critics to go to court. That was the end of the matter.

When the Shiites ignited a bloody clash by blocking the Chief of Army Staff’s convoy, many were convinced that what they had seen as an age-long problem needed to be resolved immediately. But, they did not know what to do. El-Rufai’s  bulldozers simply rumbled through the place and knocked down the Shiites’ enclave. Hasn’t there been peace ever since?

For a cleaner city, the government demolished many houses and threatened to remove beggars from the street. Now, Kaduna ranks as one of the world’s cleanest cities – to the envy of others.

The only situation in which the demolition formula was not applied was that of the Fulani herdsmen, probably because the nomadic cattle men had no fixed property worth demolishing.  El-Rufai simply plunked down a fortune to buy their commitment to peace.

The government explained that Hunkuyi had not paid ground rent for eight years. In these days of aggressive revenue drive, will any responsible government tolerate that? Besides, to demonstrate that it was all in the public interest, the governor directed that the land should be turned into a public park. A less magnanimous governor would have built public toilets on it.

Now, according to a Government House source, all the landlords who are yet to pay their ground rent will have their buildings demolished. Watch out, company executives who have failed in remitting VAT and other statutory obligations, your buildings may soon host El-Ruafai’s bulldozers.

As I was saying, His Excellency has been scorned by many for deploying  demolition as a state policy. To such busybodies, the fact that it has always worked wonders does not count.  They ask in an attempt to deride the formula: Is demolition of a building the same as the demolition of people’s resolve? What manner of governor is this? Was he elected to build or to pull down?

Going personal, some of his critics have asserted without any scientific proof that diminutive people, among whom I’m proud to number, are prone to sudden anger. How true is this? Is it the fear of domination that drives us to strike first and so fatally? Or just the “I’m in charge here” syndrome?

Whatever anybody may say about the El-Rufai formula, it is arguably one of those effective policies of this era. It is in the class of stomach infrastructure, the vote harvesting formula that has seen every Ekiti resident sporting a round tummy and chubby cheeks – all in less than four years. Or the Imo formula that professes erection of statues as a recipe for peace and general well-being of residents. Like the El-Rufai formula, the Imo solution continues to be derided, particularly the Jacob Zuma statue after the former South African president threw in the towel. Many now look at it contemptuously and hiss: “what a wrong erection”.

The Government House source aforementioned has just told me that the demolition formula was being considered for restive communities. The residents will just wake up someday to discover that their homes are gone. There will be nothing to fight over or somewhere to launch attacks from.

From many states and neighbouring countries, I am told, inquiries have been pouring in on how to acquire the ABC of the El-Rufai formula. Some of the governor’s aides are said to be packaging a working document on how to set up a centre where the legion of people who want to be well grounded in this formula can be trained. At a price.

    Obj’s adventures in Ijawland

It was thought to be a rumour. Then, the pictures hit the social media. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was hosting former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Otuoke, his Bayelsa State home. “Editorial Notebook” has approached many sources in a desperate bid to report the details of their discussion. Here is an account of the meeting, according to an unconfirmed source, who claimed to be close to a cousin of the sister of one of the cleaners in the sprawling compound:

(Obasanjo, decked in an Ijaw dress- sparkling buttons and dangling chain – walks in briskly. He is surrounded by a retinue of guards. Jonathan meets him at the door). Welcome sir; you do well Baba. Very courteous of you to visit us here.

Obasanjo: You see, I don’t dwell on the past. All is forgotten; all is forgiven. You are my son. Even the prodigal son in the Bible got a warm embrace after his repentance. So, let’s leave politics for politicians. I’m now a statesman.

“But Baba (Jonathan laughs heartily) everybody is talking about your special statement on Buhari and your Coalition for Nigeria Movement, CNM. You even told Buhari not to run.”

“Yes. Why should he run again? Please, please, I don’t want to discuss politics. Why should he run? I concede to him that he has been fighting the insurgency, but I need to warn that other areas are crying for attention. The economy is not doing well. If people now think that CNM and all that na politics; dat na dem toro.”

“Even the so-called anti-corruption war; is that how to fight it; going after key opposition figures? Look at my wife. Nobody has complained that his money is missing, yet Magu and his people won’t let her rest. I don’t understand. Perhaps,  all this would not have happened if you had backed me.”

Obasanjo chuckles, his lips pursed.  He raises his right hand.”My dear, forget the past. Even me, one yeye boy who said he was a governor and now a senator was saying I should face trial for corruption; Halliburton and all that. And I said, ‘okay o. I dey my house. Come catch Obasanjo. He was so disrespectful and I was wondering the kind of senators we now have. Senator my foot!

“Where is Mama Peace? Where is my pounded yam? Wey fisherman soup? ”

Jonathan signals to an aide to fetch the former First Lady who had earlier joined him to receive Obasanjo. She walks in fast, beaming.

“Baba, na like this una go dey look me? All my money, they say it is money laundering. How can I carry money to a laundry; is it cloth? And I say, ‘okay, make we settle. They refused. Is that not persecution? Am I a launderer?”

Obasanjo, smiling, moves to the dining table, sits. “My dear, don’t worry. We will soon know who owns this country. Just then, the light goes off (for a few minutes and Obasanjo, frowning, speaks. “They even said I, Aremu Olusegun Okikiolakan Obasanjo, chopped $16 billion for light. Me? We shall see o.”

Lunch over, Obasanjo stands up and the former First Family sees him off to the car.

Register for national ID card, governor tells Lagos residents

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has urged residents to register for the national identity card.

The governor said it was important for residents to register for the scheme because it would scale up data planning and financial planning as well as boost delivery of democratic dividends to the people.

Ambode spoke yesterday at Lagos House in Ikeja, the capital, after registering for the scheme.

He said: “I have just finished registering myself as a very proud Nigerian. I am very proud to hold this identity card. I also urge all Lagosians to do the same. We are proudly Lagosians and we are very proud Nigerians.

“I urge every Lagosian to come out and get their national identity cards. It is in our best interest; it is also good for data planning and financial planning for all the things that we are trying to deliver to our people.

“So, I urge everyone to come out and register.”

NIMC’s Regional Coordinator for Lagos, Mr Kayode Adegoke, hailed Ambode for leading the registration and for his administration’s massive infrastructural development across the state.

Adegoke, who presented the transaction slip confirming the governor’s enrolment into the national identity database, said the NIMC was proud to be associated with the state government to deliver on the scheme.

Council chief hails governor for road repairs

The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Kayode Adejare Omiyale, has hailed Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for constructing Tokunbo/Ishola streets in the LCDA.

The chairman said it is an historic partnership between the state government and the LCDA to bring succour to the residents.

Tokunbo/Ishola streets are the best options to escape the huge traffic on the popular Herbert Macaulay road.

It is a strategic way to link the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and other important places to safe travelling time on the mainland.

Omiyale urged the Community Development Associations (CDAs) on Tokunbo/Ishola streets to monitor the contractor in order to achieve the best results.

The LCDA chief said it had become the responsibilities of the CDAs and the landlord associations to speak with mechanics on the road.

He said mechanics are not supposed to turn the roads into their workshops.

Omiyale said: “We, the residents, will need to decide consciously whether to have a good road or a bad road.

“If we are determined to have good roads, we need to apply necessary sanctions on those who deface the roads.”

Governor pays N16m to decongest prisons

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has paid N16 million to facilitate the release of 400 inmates and Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATI) in three prisons across the state.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Ibrahim Mukhtar, said the move would decongest prisons across several local governments.

Mukhtar told The Nation that most of the beneficiaries were persons convicted of light offences who could not meet the fines imposed in lieu of imprisonment.

Others were those awaiting trial over minor civil transactions for which they were given options of fine which they failed to pay.

He said: “About 400 prisoners were released from various satellite prisons across various Local Government Areas, including the Goronduse Kurumara Central Prison to make life better for all segments of the society.

“The state government is committed to the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, we emphasise on restorative sentences rather than custodial sentences.”

Mukhtar spoke while receiving the national stakeholders’committee on prison decongestion led by the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello.

The committee will oversee the implementation of Federal Government’s prison decongestion programme.

  • Bello: A governor and his controversies

Bello: A governor and his controversies

Many indigenes of Kogi State are up in arms against Governor Yahaya Bello over what they describe as his style of governance. The governor has also incurred the wrath of his people for supporting the proposal for the creation of cattle colonies by the Federal Government. JAMES AZANIA reports.

Less than a week after the killing of 73 people and the maiming of others in Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, along with a handful of his colleagues, were at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, ostensibly to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office. The development drew the ire of some people, who condemned the purpose and timing of their visit.

A week later, Bello announced that Kogi will support the establishment of cattle colonies in its domain, as announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh.

The minister said that work will commence next week on cattle colonies in states that have indicated interest to establish them.

He disclosed this during a visit to the Agriculture and Veterinary Complex of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He said that the National Economic Council has set up a 10-member committee, comprising the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as chairman and nine governors to facilitate the commencement of the colonies.

He said: “One of the most topical issues we have today is that of farmers and herdsmen clashes. If we do not deal with it quickly, we run the risk of damaging the harmony and the co-existence of Nigeria as a country. The killings are getting too many.

“In our attempt to solve the problem, we have proffered certain solutions but perhaps we were not sensitive enough to Nigeria’s fragile sensitivities and suspicions. When we spoke of colonies, we were immediately greeted with reactions that this was an attempt to cease Nigeria’s land and give to the Fulanis to colonise. The intention is not for Fulanis or anyone to colonise any territory. It is to provide a haven for cattle to graze in peace under controlled environments to prevent the conflicts between farmers and herdsmen.

“Only yesterday, a committee was set up by the Vice President with members, most of them, state governors discussing this matter and resolving that states that are interested will begin work on this matter as soon as next week.”

While some other states, including Benue, have outrightly rejected the idea, Bello, who had in the past said that the Fulanis, including the herdsmen were welcome in Kogi, agreed to it.

Despite his explanation for the open arms policy towards the Fulanis, some of the stakeholders in the state, kicked against it.

Throwing his weight behind the initiative, Governor Bello said that it is being wrongly perceived by segments of the society. According to him, the initiative would benefit farmers, herdsmen and the citizens.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Petra Onyegbule, the governor said the President decided to take the measure to curb the incessant bloody clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the nation.

He added: “This move will also enhance the security of lives and property of the people of Kogi State”.

He allayed the fears of residents that communally-owned land would be handed over to Fulanis, saying the policy is not an indirect attempt by the Federal Government to parcel their land to the herdsmen.

He continued: “To ensure that everyone is carried along, Kogi State through the Ministry of Agriculture will soon be embarking on a series of stakeholders’ engagements to sensitise the people, farmers, cattle breeders and other stakeholders on the implementation of the new policy.

“Traditional rulers, leaders of various communities, opinion leaders, religious leaders and the entire citizens will be carried along in the course of the engagement, so that we can collectively study the merits and demerits of the policy. The insinuations and speculations from various quarters nationwide that the Federal Government is conspiring to take over communal land and give it to herdsmen are far from true. The planned cattle colonies are for the interest of our people.”

Worried by the prounancement, the people of  the nine local government areas in Kogi-East petitioned President Buhari, saying that they have rejected the idea of a Fulani cattle colony in Igala land.

In the petition by the President of the Igala Project, Mr. Atayi Babs, and the Secretary-General, Mallam Musa Haruna,  they outlined their oppositiin to the idea, stating that it will lead to the breakdown of law and order.“Our people, who are largely farmers, are not prepared to host Fulani herdsmen or cattle colony masters in our land,” they said.

It reads: “Our position is further reinforced by the multiple acts of war and mayhem being unleashed daily on our innocent farmers and hapless law-abiding citizens in their villages, homes and farmlands by rampaging Fulani herdsmen.

“Mr. President, between June 2015 and December 2017, Igala land has witnessed several incidences of killings as a result of herdsmen violence in several areas, including Ebeje where eight people were killed and farms set ablaze; Agbada/Agojeju, where 19 people were slaughtered; Edede two persons were killed; six people killed in Oganenigu; three people killed in Ojapata; five people killed in Ojuwo Anawo. All these happened in Dekina Local Government Area.

“The story is not different in Ofu Local Government Area, at Ojuwo Omachi and Akpagidigbo, where the incessant attacks of herdsmen have claimed the lives of over 20 persons. In Abejukolo and Bagana in Omala local government areas, the reign of terror resonates loudly, so much that our people no longer move freely, to and from their farmlands, because of the fear of killings, maiming and rape, with some villages like Ebakume wholly sacked and entire farm produce granaries/silos completely burnt.

“Despite the brazen nature of the aforementioned acts of criminality by these would-be occupants of the so-called cattle colony, none of them has been arrested or made to account for these crimes, as these heavily armed cattle herders terrorise our land, flaunting their prowess in the handling of AK 47 rifles and double barrel guns.

“Mr. President, our opposition to this move and the hasty approval given by the Kogi State Governor is further reinforced by the inescapable fact that under your Presidency, murderous Fulani herdsmen have enjoyed subtle protection and favouritism to the extent that these herdsmen, who now treat Nigeria as a conquered territory, will eventually go beyond the purview of the so-called colony to destroy farmlands, maim and kill under the slightest provocation.

“In view of the above and many more, we the undersigned concerned people of Kogi-East, Kogi State, North-Central, Nigeria state as follows:

“We do not want cattle colony or grazing reserve in our land. We reject any attempt to convert or transfer the ownership of ancestral lands in Igala land to cattle colony master or owners who operate by killing people, destroying communities wholesale, and destroying farmlands while enjoying government protection from counter attack, arrest or prosecution. We reject attempts to turn Igala land into the next killing field of marauding Fulani herdsmen.”

In a similar petition titled: “Kogi West Rejects Establishment Of Cattle Colonies”, Senator Dino Melaye, the lawmaker representing the district at the National Assembly, condemned the governor for embracing the idea.

He stated: “It is not surprising that the governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, will quickly but strangely meet with the Minister of Agriculture in order to make our dear Confluence State as a pilot state for the proposed cattle colonies in the country. The governor’s latest shenanigans is not surprising in the sense that money is involved. The Federal Government will definitely make funds available to Bello to kick-start the pilot scheme in Kogi State.

“Therefore, as a true representative of the people of Kogi West senatorial zone and on behalf of my constituents, we warn in strong terms that our soil, land, water and air cannot be used for cattle colonies. Let it be clear to all the insensitive people behind the idea that Kogi West will resist the establishment of any cattle colony within our domain politically, spiritually, traditionally and with any means available within the ambit of the law”.

A community leader from the Kogi East, Chief Alhassan Ejike, called on the governor to jettison the idea, saying it is an invitation to breakdown of law and order, warning the governor not to venture into the establishment of cattle colonies in any part of the state in order to avoid any looming disaster that will follow such an open invitation to herdsmen.

“You are not the owner of Kogi and you cannot allocate a land that doesn’t belong to you to foreigners,” he said.

While the governor is being criticised at home, commendation has come from outside, with Governor Tanko Almakura of Nassarawa State described him as a good ambassador of President Buhari.

He hailed his Kogi State counterpart for upholding the leadership ideals of President Buhari.

Kingsley Fanwo, the media aide to the governor, said that Almakura gave the commendation while receiving Bello at the Government House, Lafia, saying Bello has been an advocate of a united Nigeria.

Almakura said: “The visit of Bello and others to Benue to sympathize with the people, was a loud testimony of the unity and peace that exists among the APC governors.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank Governor Yahaya Bello for standing up for a united Nigeria. He is a governor that possesses the leadership qualities of Mr. President.

“We are keeping track of the achievements of your administration in Kogi State. Let me tell you that you have made our party proud. You are promoting the core ideals of our great party.”

  • Governor: There is a threat to attack Taraba in 10 days

Governor: There is a threat to attack Taraba in 10 days

A governor cried out yesterday over a threat to attack his state within the next 10 days.

Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku, whose state has witnessed some violence in recent months, said he received a letter from suspected insurgents of an impending attack.

Ishaku, who spoke when he received Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Uche Secondus, said: “We are on notice that in 10 days, we (Taraba) shall be attacked. I have alerted all security agencies. We are waiting.

“A helicopter has dropped arms and ammunition in the night without its mission established. It is not a time to keep quiet; we are living in fear,” he added.

Commissioner of Police David Akinremi has dismissed the report of an arms-filled chopper landing in a Taraba village at night as “an unfounded and misleading rumour”.

But the state government is not satisfied.

Ishaku lamented that his pain as a governor, is in the fact that he promised to develop the state if the people could give him peace. “Unfortunately, I have provided development but peace has been elusive,” he said.

The governor said he had been given a crown without a sword, so he cannot fight and keep control of his power, since he relies on the Federal Government for help.

“Here, we rely on people who, when you give them instructions, they tell you to wait until they get a clearance from above.

“Before the clearance comes from Abuja, you have lost hundreds of lives. This is absolutely absurd and disappointing, particularly when you meet people like me who want to work with zeal,” he said.

The governor is asking for an investigation into the killing of over 68 persons by herdsmen and the killing of a member of the House of  Assembly, Hosea Ibi, who was kidnapped in Takum directly opposite a military barracks. No suspect has been arrested for this murder, Ishaku said.

He said: “We are sad and angry because there is no security in our land. Taraba buried 68 persons when Benue was burying 73. Should we continue like that? The choice is ours.

“But we shall continue to cry and scream. If we are not heard in Nigeria, we might be heard in Chad, Egypt, England and or US.”

Secondus urged the National Assembly to investigate the allegation that a helicopter loaded with firearms and ammunition landed  in Jubu village on January 20.

Secondus said: “In the last two years, we have witnessed in our country how the lives of innocent people are being taken away in our communities.

“The poor are being killed with no justification. They have lost their homes and sources of income. And there is a total breakdown of law and order in the country.

“It is important to note that when situations like this degenerate into a magnitude where the people are fear gripped, without the government coming to their aid, they can resort to self-help to protect themselves.

“We are not asking them to do that, but we are crying loud and praying for the government to return to its senses and heed our advice and protect our people.

Secondus urged the Federal Government to reform the country’s security architecture in the country to end the killings.

“Let the lawmakers find out its mission, aim, objective and purpose. I believe this will expose those who are behind the killings in Taraba and other places.”
