  • 2019: Tension in Imo APGA over Obiano’s alleged plot to impose governorship candidate

THE alleged plan to impose a sole governorship candidate on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the 2019 election in Imo State by the Anambra State governor, Mr. Willie Obiano is generating serious tension among the party’s gubernatorial aspirants and other stakeholders.

The Nation exclusively gathered that the Anambra governor, who is regarded as the leader of the party in the entire Southeast, has allegedly communicated his choice of candidate to the party leadership at a meeting held in Awka, the Anambra State capital recently. Although, the identity of the Anambra governor’s candidate is still being held as a top secret, but investigations by this newspaper, revealed that the said aspirant, holds a national office in the party and was actually drafted into the race by Obiano and other APGA chieftains from Anambra State.

The Nation gathered that development has heated up the polity within the party, and also made the leadership of the party in the state apprehensive over what will be the outcome of such imposition, after they had repeatedly assured the aspirants of free and fair primaries. It was also learnt that the said aspirant, a Lagos State based legal practitioner and property developer from Owerri zone, has just recently conveyed his intention to contest the governorship election to the leaders of the party. Meanwhile, APGA parades the highest number of governorship aspirants in the state with over 20 persons indicating interest to fly the party’s flag.

Some of the major aspirants include, Okey Ezeh, Uche Onyeaguocha, Frank Nneji (CEO ABC Motors), Steve Nwoga, Ike .C. Ibe, David Mbamare and Dr. Obi Njoku, among others. According to an aide to one of the aspirants, “any plan to impose a candidate on the party by any person or group of persons will be resisted. All the aspirants have equal stakes in the party and they are all committed to free and fair primaries. Anything short of that will scuttle the chances of the party”. Contacted, the state’s Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr. George Nkworji, said that the Anambra governor is only interested in strengthening the party in the state ahead of the 2019 elections and does not harbour such plans. According to him, “the insinuation is the handiwork of the opposition and enemies of the party who are afraid of the party. Governor Obiano cannot even contemplate that. He is only working to strengthen APGA in Imo and other Southeast states. So there is no plot to impose any candidate by the Anambra governor or any other person.”

  • Imo APC yet to endorse governorship candidate

Imo APC yet to endorse governorship candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has distanced itself from the ongoing endorsement of candidates for the 2019 governorship election.

The party said it can only support candidates who emerge after a credible primary which will afford aspirants a level playing ground.

The Chairman, Hillary Eke, insisted that Governor Rochas Okorocha’s endorsement of his Chief of Staff and son-in-law Uche Nwosu, as his likely successor, is a private decision which does not reflect the party’s position.

He, however, said the governor has the right to support anyone for any position “but should not be mistaken as the party’s position”.

  • Appeal Court reserves judgment in Jegede’s appeal against Ibrahim

Appeal Court reserves judgment in Jegede’s appeal against Ibrahim

A Special 3-man panel of the Court of Appeal constituted to hear the appeals on the dispute of governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has reserved judgment in the appeal by the substituted candidate of the party, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

The panel, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa told parties Wednesday that they would be informed when the judgment was ready.

Jegede appealed the October 14, 2016 ruling of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to substitute Jegede with Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

Justice Saulawa’s announcement elicited complaint from the camp of the respondents comprising state’s executive of the PDP in the South West (loyal to the Ali Modu Sheriff leadership of the party), led by Biyi Poroye, Chairman, PDP, Ondo State.

Their lawyer argued that Jegede’s lawyer was allowed to adopt the appellant’s brief where the respondents were yet to file their reqponsents’ brief as required and to allow the court hear from both sides.

Respondents’ lawyer, Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN) had argued that the court could not hear the substantive appeal in view of the pending appeal at the Supreme Court.

He told the Appeal Court panel that his clients have appealed its earlier ruling granting leave to Jegede to appeal and that they have also filed a motion for stay of proceedings before the Supreme Court.

Nwofor, who tendered certified true copies of the record of appeal and motion for stay of proceedings, urged the court to abide by the long held tradition of deferring to a higher court once an appeal is entered and record of appeal compiled.

He argued that since their appeal was entered at the Supreme Court and a motion for stay of proceedings also pending before the apex court, the appellate panel has lost jurisdiction to proceed with the appeal by Jegede.

“We have asked this court to hands off and await the Supreme Court’s decision on our motion for stay of proceedings. This court has lost the jurisdiction to proceed with this appeal. It should await the decision of the Supreme Court.

Appellant’s lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) faulted Nwofor’s argument and urged the court to proceed to hear his cleint’s appeal.

He argued that, for his client, time was of the essence because by the new provision of the Electoral Act, a person, who did not participate in all process of an election cannot challenge its outcome.

Justice Saulawa however overruled Nwofor, noting that the court had, on November 10, 2016 granted an accelerated hearing in the case, abridged the time within which parties are to file their processes and a departure from the rules.

Shortly after the judge’s spoke, Olanipekun adopted his client’s appellant’s brief and urged the court to allow the appeal.

Nwofor, who expressed surprise at the development, said his clients had been shot out. He said the court failed to abide by tradition where appeals are entered.

As Justice Saulawa announced the reservation of judgment, supporters of Jimoh Ibrahim and Sheriff, who occupied a section of the court, began to murmur.

Meanwhile the court has adjourned to 12noon today to enable Poroye and other respondents in the appeal by Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ben Obi to file their respondents’ briefs.

Makarfi and Obi are appealing the June 29 judgement of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja recognising the Sheriff-led National Executive Council of the PDP as the party’s authentic leadership body.

The court, in two separate rulings Wednesday, refused applications by Ibrahim to be made a party in both appeals.

  • ‘I’ll not step down for Mimiko’s candidate’

‘I’ll not step down for Mimiko’s candidate’

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Ondo state, Roland Arigbede Monday said he would pursue his aspiration to become Ondo state governor  to a logical conclusion .

He emphasised that he would not step down for a candidate allegedly being sponsored by Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Arigbede who spoke with reporters in Akure, the state capital alleged that he had being offered money and other promises to drop his ambition for the PDP candidate.

He said he was in the governorship race to make Ondo state an envy of other states in Nigeria.

Arigbede however warned that PRP would resist any attempt to rig the coming election.

Besides, the governorship candidate urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently address the current economic recession in the country.

The politician sought the support of the citizenry in the state, stressing that he would bring rapid development to the state if he becomes the governor.

He promised to utilise the human and material resources endowed the state to bring succor to the citizenry who are groaning because of harsh economy ravaging the state.

  • Igbinedion spends ‘looted’ funds on Oshiomhole’s election -Ize-Iyamu

Igbinedion spends ‘looted’ funds on Oshiomhole’s election -Ize-Iyamu

Governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has asked Governor Adams Oshiomhole to refund the money Chief Lucky Igbinedion expended on his elections in 2007.

The refund, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said, became necessary because Governor Oshiomhole has consistently accused his predecessor of looting the state treasury.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu for the first admitted that the man behind the mask that financed Governor Oshiomhole in 2007 was Chief Igbinedion.

He spoke last weekend at the unveiling of a book titled “Betrayal of Trust” written by an ex-aide to Governor Oshiomhole, Orobosa Omo-Ojo.

The PDP governorship candidate said Lucky Igbinedion was one of the biggest contributors to the money that was spent to making Oshiomhole governor.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu stated that Governor Oshiomhole as President of the NLC never protested against Lucky’s policies ‘because he deliberately needed Igbinedion friendship.’

Ize-Iyamu also urged Oshiomhole to refund the money collected from President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 to ensure the defunct ACN lost the presidential election.

According to him, “Lucky Igbinedion recommended him to some of us that people are saying he had not done well, let him appoint a man who is popular, who appears to have popularity among the people. Let it be on record that he helped him to become governor. That was how he introduced Oshiomhole. We did it for two reasons.”

“First was that because Edo is one and an Afenmai man has never become the governor. We felt it was time for an Afenmai man to become the governor. I also bought the story of Lucky Igbinedion that this man just left office as President of the NLC. This man will be interested in the masses, he will be interested in our pensioners, he will be interested in students. This man will excel. On that note, we supported him. He declared he had no money, we have to put all the resources together to support him.”

“When he is busying talking about Lucky Igbinedion, let Edo people know that it was Lucky Igbinedion that brought him. In 2007, I want him to tell Edo people where he got the money he spent to become governor. In case, he has forgotten, I will like to remind him that most of the money comes from Lucky Igbinedion. Since he is saying Lucky Igbinedion stole Edo State money, can he please refund the money he collected from Lucky.

“In 2012, Oshiomhole was in ACN. I know that a governor in ACN collected money from Jonathan in 2012 to betray his party such that ACN lost in Edo.

“I did not betray my party. A governor collected money from Jonathan to betray his party and ensure his party lost in Edo. As he is talking about people refunding money, please remind him to refund the money he collected from President Jonathan. He should please refund that money.

“Let me confess that when I was his DG, he brought a lot of money for us to use for campaign, I don’t know where he got that money from. I have been told he got that money from the state government coffers. Can he please refund the money.”

Author of the book, who was a former Commissioner for Transport, Orobosa Omo-Ojo, said the book gave an insight into the person and administrative style of Governor Oshiomhole.

He said the book revealed those that supported Oshiomhole to power and why Oshiomhole lost focus in governance.

  • Edo PDP begins search for governorship candidate

Edo PDP begins search for governorship candidate

The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun the search for a credible candidate to present against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s governorship election.

PDP chieftains said to have shown interest in the race are: Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, Chief Solomon Edebiri, Matthew Iduoriyikemwen and Mike Onolememen.

It was learnt that a special committee has been set up by the top hierarchy of the party to scout for a popular candidate.

A source told our reporter that all lawmakers, except Ehiozuwa Agbonnayima, representing Ikpoba Okha/Egor Federal Constituency, attended the meeting when the committee was set up.

The source said Ehiozuwa was barred from the meeting because of his alleged romance with the APC.

But in a telephone chat, Ehiozuwa said he was not barred from any PDP meeting.

The lawmaker denied acting the APC script at the National Assembly.

He said: “The National Assembly is not APC or PDP. You do what is in the interest of Nigeria and your constituency once you are a member.

“I am PDP member. The Captain Hosa they are talking about is no longer a politician. Everybody goes to his house, irrespective of party affiliations.”

Former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, in an interview, had said he would join other well-meaning leaders of the PDP to scout for a credible candidate without connection with PDP’s failed government.

He said: “The 2016 governorship will not be based on political platform; it is going to be about who the candidate is. For the PDP to be seen to have broken ranks with irresponsibility, we have to be sure that our candidate will not have any relationship with previous failures of the PDP government in Edo.”

Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion said the next PDP governor would be a founding member of the party in the state.

  • Borno group rejects PDP governorship candidate

Concerned Borno State indigenes in the Southwest have kicked against the choice of Alhaji Mohammed Imam as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in their state.

Members of the Yerwa-Oodu’a socio-economic society said yesterday that Borno State should be led by the best the state could offer, especially as it was passing through difficult times in the hands of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The group said they either belonged to the PDP nor the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that its interest “is the future of the state”.

The Borno State indigenes said this was why “we believe that the two leading parties ought to present credible candidates to enable the citizens make their choice”.

They addressed reporters yesterday in Lagos.

The Borno indigenes spoke through their Secretary, Haruna Wamdio, and Chairman, Alhaji Kachalla Bulama.

The Yerwa-Oodu’a is a socio-economic society of Borno indigenes doing business and living in the Southwest. They expressed worry over the situation back home, having lost relations and friends to the insurgency in their state.

Some of them said they were hosting in the Southwest family members who escaped from insurgency in their state.

Wamdio said they were opposed to the candidacy of Imam, especially because he had not demonstrated good leadership in his private capacity.

Besides, they said the PDP candidate was imposed on the party by former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.

The former governor had been under fire for single-handedly replacing Imam with Alhaji Gambo Lawan, who was “validly elected” by PDP delegates as the party’s standard bearer.

The Borno indigenes said Imam ought not to be any party’s candidate because of his antecedent.

They claimed that Modu Sheriff once refused to allow his daughter to marry Imam because of certain misgivings about his person.

They queried why Sheriff would “impose on the people of Borno State the same man he refused to allow to become his son-in-law? Why should a man Sheriff considered not suitable for his own daughter to suddenly become suitable to manage the affairs of the over three million people of Borno State?”

  • I’ll industrialise Ekiti, says AD governorship candidate

The governorship candidate for the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Ekiti State, Victor Osekita, has promised to industrialise the state if elected.

Osekita spoke yesterday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, Ekiti is blessed with abundant mineral and human resources which if properly harnessed would make it an industrialised state.

“The state has abundant human and natural resources to be an industrialised state. What is needed is for the political leaders to work towards the realisation of this goal.

“If elected into office, I will facilitate the setting up of industries in every constituency in the state which will transform and help the state to develop, while reducing unemployment,” he said.

On education, Osekita promised to give free education to every child in the state from primary to secondary school levels, adding that free education was part of the party’s ideology.

He also promised to reduce the cost of healthcare in the state by ensuring that drugs were purchased directly from the manufacturers.

  • My daughter asks about ‘Daddy’ but I don’t know what to tell her – Widow of slain governorship candidate

My daughter asks about ‘Daddy’ but I don’t know what to tell her – Widow of slain governorship candidate

For two years, the family of the late candidate of Citizens Peoples Party (CPP) in the 2011 governorship election in Delta State, Chief Ogbe Onokpite, engaged the Nigeria Police in a legal battle over the death of the politician. During the period, several rounds of autopsy were conducted on Onokpite’s body to determine the cause of his death.

But all that seemed to have come to an end on December 28 last year as Onokpite’s body was finally laid to rest at his Ugolo-Okpe native town in Delta State. The late Onokpite was allegedly shot by some policemen at Beeland International Hotel, along Orhuwhorun Road, Udu Local Government Area, Delta State on November 26, 2011. He was accused by the police of engaging in gun-running, kidnapping and armed robbery. But the family has refuted the allegations, insisting that there was more to the death of the politician than the police would want the public to believe.

At the time Onokpite was allegedly shot, his wife, Helen, was said to be away in Canada to be delivered of a baby. The grief-stricken widow is still sad that her husband could not live to see his baby and the baby would grow up not to know her father.

Still miffed that her late husband was branded a criminal, she claimed that the man she married was an activist and a God-fearing man. She also described the late Onokpite as a caring husband and father “who the enemies did not allow to play a fatherly role in the life of her daughter as he had done in the lives of many down-trodden people in Delta State through his foundation, the Ogbe Forum.

“But to God be the glory for the gift of life, which no man has the right to take. I seek justice for my husband’s death. I wish to use this medium to appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan, Her Excellency, Dame Patience Jonathan, the Senate President, the Chairman Human Rights Committee of the National Assembly, the Inspector General of Police and all human rights commissions to help bring my husband’s killers to justice.

“I have been turned into a widow at an early age and left to look after a baby of three years. The quest for justice continues. The Lord is our strength.”

In a tribute to her husband, Helen wrote: “Ogbe, you were my everything. It’s so unfortunate that they made me a widow at a young age, thoughtless that death has no sacred cows. The death knell toils for everyone: the very young and old, male and female, affluent and the poor, the good and the wicked, the infirm and the weakest of all.

“They denied our little angel, Giggo, the opportunity of meeting you, hugging you or playing with you. A day came and Giggo asked me, ‘Mummy, where is Daddy?’ I could not give her a reply. That was the most tearful day since they took you away from me. I cried all day.

“My Ogbe, I will mourn your unlawful killing forever. You were actually dragged into death from this wicked world. My husband, my best friend, my soul-mate, my hero and my everything, I am proud of you.

“To live in the hearts of those you love is not death. You have transmitted from mortality to immortality. You are not dead but asleep in the Lord. Sleep on, my darling, in peace.”

The deceased’s widow was said to have spoken with her late husband from Canada for about 15 minutes, two hours before he was killed. According to Helen, Onokpite was full of life and was so excited about his two-year-old daughter, Omovigho, who was billed to start school the following Monday.

She recalled that Omovigho, who was with her in Canada at the time of the incident, was always excited to see her father’s picture and the family had planned to come to Nigeria on December 10 last year.

The widow said her husband was a man of the people who founded some NGOs to cater for his kinsmen, especially the youth. She said her late husband would forever remain alive in her mind, even as she charged the Nigerian government to do the right thing by bringing her husband’s killers to book.

Speaking at the burial, the officiating minister, Apostle Love Ededuwa, said: “It was the truth and his opposition to oppression that led to the death of Chief Ogbe Onokpite. It is better to die as a hero of truth than to die as a deceiver and corrupt person.”

Family members are also appealing to the government to bring Onokpite’s killers to book. They regret that rather than prosecute the suspects, the powers that be were trying to shield the culprits. Onokpite’s brother, Diemo, said he was disappointed with the attitude of the authorities to the issue.

Diemo said: “For more than two years that we have lost Chief Ogbe Onokpite, we are still waiting to get justice. It is common knowledge that he was assassinated. We have been waiting to get justice till date but no arrest has been made. We are still calling on Mr. President and the Inspector General of Police to look into the murder case.”

Pained that his brother’s killers were still roaming free, Diemo said he would not mind going to the International Court of Justice if he had to do so to get justice in the matter.

“There are laws in this country and there are international laws. If we don’t get justice on this murder case, we will be forced to go to the World Court and let the world know that some people in this country can kill and get away with it. We are asking for the policemen who have been implicated in the case to be prosecuted. It is a thing of surprise that the policemen alleged to have killed Onokpite were granted bail,” he lamented.

In a statement, one of the solicitors to the family, Odiana Eriata of Eriata and Partners, said: “There is a strong conviction that the late Chief Ogbe Onokpite had no primary issues with any law enforcement agent. Because before he contested the governorship election on the platform of Citizens Peoples Party, requirements of the law as to his eligibility were determined by the

appropriate authorities saddled with the obligations of screening to determine whether or not he was an eligible aspirant, qualified to contest an election as CPP

    governorship candidate.

“The late Chief Ogbe Onokpite was killed on Saturday November 26, 2011. He was besieged, captured and shot in both legs at Beeland Hotel, Orhuwhorun Road, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, and taken to Warri Police Area Command, where he was humiliated and summarily executed unlawfully.”

He added: “On Sunday 27th November, 2011, at about 7:30 am, a former Commissioner of Police, Delta State came to Warri and addressed a press conference and alleged that a petty criminal, a gun runner and an armed robber was killed by policemen in a gun battle with the police. To give effect to his assertions, he paraded one Mr. Okporokoro with two AK47 assault rifles and with 60 live ammunition.

“The police story was that Mr. Okporokoro was accosted at a police check point in a Honda car with registration number AM 528 JRT belonging to Chief Ogbe Onokpite, transporting two AK47 assault rifles and 60 live ammunition. The police further stated that Mr. Okporokoro confessed to the alleged crime and that he was sent by Chief Onokpite to deliver the arms and ammunition to one Mr. Agbara, who resides in Agaga community in Uvwie LGA.

“The police further stated that Mr. Okporokoro was asked by the police to direct them to where Chief Ogbe Onokpite was staying (Beeland Hotels). The police alleged that on their arrival at Beeland Hotels, Mr. Malik Okporokoro pointed at Chief Onokpite and that in an attempt by the police to arrest Chief Onokpite, he (Onokpite) fired at the police with a locally-made gun.

“The police said in fear of imminent danger and in self-defence, they fired at Chief Ogbe Onokpite to disarm him, and that the police were taking him to Warri General Hospital when he died on the way.”

Eriata, however, faulted police claims, saying the motive for the murder of Onokpite, according to investigations, was undemocratic and uncivilised. He wondered why the policemen involved would allow themselves to be used as tools.

In her own tribute, a former Commissioner for Education in Delta State, Dr. Mrs. Veronica Ugbuagu, described the late Onokpite as a dogged fighter for any cause he believed in and a hater of oppression.

She said: “I remember I told him about a fearful dream I had concerning him and I said it was not a good dream. I can go on recalling my dreams. I prayed deeply for him throughout the 2011 election period. I was shocked beyond words when the news of his death reached me.”

In a terse reaction to the latest lamentation from Onokpite’s family, the Delta State Command’s image-maker, Mr. Charles Muka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said “an alleged accomplice of Onokpite Ogbe”, who was arrested with the late politician, had been charged to court.

He added: “I’m not aware that the matter has been withdrawn from the courts.”
