Nigeria will survive beyond 2015 through prayers – Gowon

Former head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has faulted the prediction by the American government that the country would break up by 2015, stressing that similar prediction by France was already failing.

He said that God would uproot all the leaders with evil intentions against the country.

Gowon spoke on Monday during his official visit to Gethsemane Prayer Ministries Cathedral, Eleyele, Ibadan, presided over by National Coordinator, Nigeria Prays, Rev. Moses Aransiola.

According to him, Nigerians should all stand up as one and intercede on the crises rocking this nation.

He said, “That is when God will uproot all the leaders that have evil intention against this country. Nigerians need to desist from creating problems which they cannot solve and stop blaming God for their shortcomings.

“We had series of crises in the past and if Nigerians can pray fervently well, sooner or later this country will be free from its challenges; God has heard our cries and will surely answer.

“I don’t believe that the prediction by America that Nigeria will break before 2015 will happen. France said the same thing in the past that we will break up before 2014 but we still stand as one.

“Every Nigerians should stand against the claims. If everyone of us believesthat it will not happen, then it will not. I believe God will not allow such to happen. Nigeria Prays is really praying against such and that was the reason why this group came into existence.”

“The school has put in you good morals and ethics. When you leave here, remember what you have been taught and be good ambassadors of the school. The school has taught you in the way of the Lord. Those of you going into higher institutions, cultism reigns; so, be careful and don’t be lost in the crowd. Know that you have been built morally, academically and spiritually,” said Ajiboye.

Obashoro urged the youths to dream realistically for the future and ensure that they possess the drive to make such dream a reality.

Speaking on the topic: Your Dream, Your Drive and Your Destiny, Obashoro said: “It is the drive that makes your dream come through and realise your destiny. If your dream is what you are not, you will be fulfilling other people’s destiny. Your dream is like a vision. You have to discover your dream and let your interest, environment tally with your dream and let your dream make you happy,’ she stated.

Director of the school, Dr Bayo Oyeyemi, said the school would continue to provide conducive environment devoid of immoral, lewd, abusive and destructive tendencies for students to learn.

Jonathan said: “The unity of Nigeria is indivisible and non-negotiable. We must remain the forward looking people we are.

“I see a united, powerful and prosperous nation that will make the generation yet unborn very proud. Arise, we shall and prosper we will.”

Gen. Gowon described Nigeria as “a unique nation, a nation of diverse, strong and hard working people.”

According to him, not many nation could survive 100 years of cohesiveness despite the diverse nature of the nation and the challenges it has gone through.

Unveiling the centenary logo, he said: “May the emblem symbolise a rallying point for the unity of the nation.

“May it be a reminder of our entity, unity and oneness, which are not negotiable and serve as a symbol of peace, unity and prosperity.”

After his remarks, Obasanjo presented the centenary theme: ‘One Nigeria, Great Promise’.

Gen. Abubakar noted that Nigeria, for surviving 100 years and more of co-existence despite the challenges, is in the league of countries like India, China, Egypt, Ethiopia and Amenia.

He said the nation should use the opportunity of the centenary celebrations to lay the foundation of a new nation.

Abubakar thereafter presented a centenary theme song entitled: ‘This Land, Celebrating 100 years of Nigeria’, which was subsequently performed by a team of notable Nigerian musicians led by Onyeka Onwenu.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said in line with the directive of the President, the celebration would involve all Nigerians and its sponsorship would be private sector driven.

He said he was amazed at the response of Nigerians to support the celebration and make it strong, colourful and fascinating.

Anyim said the centenary celebration would be used to replace pessimism with optimism to make the country rise above its challenges.

He disclosed that the celebration would generate over 15,000 direct and indirect jobs.

According to him, the business hub would not only attract a record 500,000 visitors everyday, “by the end of its five-year development cycle, this innovative and vibrant City would have created over 50,000 construction jobs and 5,000 permanent well paying jobs.”

On the occasion, the Minister of Culture and Tourism Edem Duke said: “We must re-orientate our minds to the fact that this City would also house middle income earners, who work within the City, but the principle of this development is to reposition Nigeria as the cultural, commercial and entertainment capital of the continent.”

Gowon wants Electoral College for 2015 poll

    …Opposes creation of new states

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) on Wednesday advocated for the use of the Electoral College system in the conduct of future Presidential elections in the country, beginning with the 2015 elections.

He also asked the National Assembly to end the agitation for new states.

The former Nigerian leader spoke just as Kaduna State governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa lamented the security situation in the northern part of the country, which according to him, has chased away potential investors who were willing to invest in the Agriculture, mining and solid mineral sectors in the region.

Speaking at a two- day conference on the north and strategies for sustainable development, the former head of state who was represented by the Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Aliko Mohammed however said that the north must come together to forge a common front in other to enjoy political progress and development.

Although he did not elaborate further on the Electoral College system, he said, “Unless we come together in the north, we would continue to have problems. I met with the Senate caucus in the north in Abuja last week and I asked them to reconsider the introduction of Electoral College in electing the president.”

Gowon said the creation of new states will only increase the cost of governance, pointing out that it will not resolve the catalogues of problems bedevilling the country.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Yakowa said that the north has always remain a catalyst for the unity of the country, adding that despite the current security challenges, the region will remain a rallying point for the unity and development of the country.

Yakowa said, “The north has been a catalyst for the unity, stability and development of the country. The country has been relying for direction from the north. This is contrary to what some out there would want the world to belief about the region.

“History has shown that the unity and strength of the north, with a collective sense of purpose and focus has been the bastion for the unity and strength of Nigeria. We must do everything to sustain this responsibility bestowed on us by providence.”

The governor, who commended the organizers of the conference for their foresight, said it was gratifying that Nigeria has remained a single country despite the security challenges, saying, “we must give credit to Nigerians and to God that Nigeria still remains a country, albeit beleaguered by towering security challenges.

“In this difficult time, we must work assiduously to adequately address the tolerance level among our people, if we must succeed collectively. Nigeria, as a multicultural and multilingual nation of diverse people, with more than 250 distinct languages and ethnic groups, cannot continue to behave as a group of irreconcilable religious and ethnic nationalities, contrary to the ‘One North One People’ bequeathed to us by no other than the late Sardauna, Ahmadu Bello,” Yakowa said.

How Gowon blocked arms, food from entering Biafra-Ofonagoro

Former Minister of Information, Dr Walter Ofonagoro, has said that the former Head of State, Gen.Yakubu Gowon, ceded Bakassi Peninsula, which truly belonged to the present day cross River State of Nigeria, during the civil war, so as to block arms and food from entering Biafra.

Making this revelation in a key note address delivered at the Igbo Day Celebration which held in Lagos on Saturday, he said, “General Yakubu Gowon ceded the oil-rich region to Cameroon to stop food from coming into the defunct Republic of Biafra.”

The former minister said when Nigeria Army discovered that it would not be possible to defeat Biafran soldiers with arms, they opted for economic blockade of the old Eastern Nigeria.

He said when they discovered that food and arms were still coming into Biafra through Bakassi, Gowon decided to cede the region to Cameroon so that the blockade would be effective.

His words: “I want to say that Bakassi Peninsula belonged to the people of the old eastern region. But during the war, the Nigerian soldiers discovered that Biafran soldiers were their match so they opted for economic blockade of the region .It was in the process that Gowon went into negotiation with the president of Cameroon and ceded the oil rich region to them so that the blockade would be effective. We all know what happened, though some people are now feigning ignorance.”

On the Major Chukwuma Nzogwu Coup of January 15,1966, he said that the purpose of the coup was to revolutionise Nigeria.

He said that calling the coup an Igbo coup was wrong since Igbos were controlling over 75 percent of the government in the First Republic.

According to him, the purpose of the coup was to bring dynamism into the government of Nigeria in line with Ghana and other African nations that were already attracting international respect.

Ofonagoro also lamented what he described imbalance in the Nigerian political system.
