    Group decries non-payment of pension

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has decried the non-payment of pension  for May to pensioners across the country.

The union in a statement signed by the National President, Dr. A.O. Afolayan and the General Secretary, Elder Actor Zal, lamented the hardship the non-payment of the this month’s pension has caused its members all over the country.

The statement reads: “Efforts to find out what could have been the cause of the delay for the payment received no proper and convincing explanation from the Federal Government  agencies.”

The union, therefore, appealed to the Acting President  Yemi Osinbajo, to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and ensure that May pension is paid immediately without further delay in order to ameliorate the suffering of its members across the nation most of whom are aged. He added that it should be made a deliberate policy that pensioners are paid latest by 25th of every month.

The union added that this could be one of the best legacies that this government would bequeath to the nation as it is done in other normal climes that recognise and appreciate the labour and services of their past heroes.

  • Group seeks justice for Otodo Gbame residents

A group, the Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, yesterday demanded justice for all those evicted from Otodo Gbame community, including the late Daniel

A statement signed by the group’s executives – Akinrolabu Samuel, Bimbo Oshobe and Sani Mohammed, alleged that Aya was shot in the neck by policemen and Elijah a 42-year-old fisherman, was shot death the morning before Otodo Gbame’s demolition.

It condemned the loss of lives and forced displacement of over 30,000.

The statement said: “We condemn and call on others to join us in condemning the violence, impunity, and brazen disregard for the rule of law being demonstrated by the Lagos State Government, which is incongruous with a democratic society and the aspiration to be a global leader among megacities.

“A true global megacity cannot be successfully built on the blood of the urban poor. A true global megacity must be inclusive and harness the talents of all its residents to bring development to all. We must all stand with Otodo Gbame to ensure they see justice and ensure a return to the rule of law to enable us build Lagos as an inclusive megacity we can all be proud to call home.”

  • Group mobilises against malnutrition

    Group mobilises against malnutrition

A Civil Society Organis-ation, (CSO) under the auspices of Women Friendly Initiative (WFI) has raised the alarm over the high rate of malnutrition among women of reproductive age and children below five years in the Federal Capital territory (FCT).

The group advocated for concerted efforts to rid the society of the problem particularly in Abuja.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the organisation, Dr. Francis Eremutha, suggested that perhaps the best approach to tackling and reducing malnutrition in the territory lies in the quick and effective implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) which has not been introduced in any part of the six area councils.

He said the group hopes to penetrate the six area councils soon with well-packaged enlightenment plans to galvanise public support for the National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition to comprehensively address malnutrition.

Presenting a master plan of action designed by the organisation to enable it effectively penetrate the rural communities with its intervention programmes, Dr.  Eremutha, who was accompanied by officials of the NGO including Rosemary Adejoh, explained during a press briefing on the sad development, said that malnutrition is a condition that occurs when people consistently do not consume or absorb the right amounts or types of food and essential nutrients.

He stated that globally, the condition contributes to nearly half of more than three million deaths which occur among children globally each year.

He said, “Nigeria is one of the six countries that accounts for half of all child deaths from malnutrition worldwide  every year, one million children under five die, 45% of them due to causes attributed to malnutrition.

“Prevalence of child malnutrition varies significantly across the six geopolitical zones: children living in the North West and in the North East stand out as being particularly disadvantaged (percent stunted in

North West and North East is 50 and 47, 29 in north Central, 20 in the South South and in the South West, and 10 in the south east. Similar patterns emerge for underweight and wasting.”

He also said that malnutrition prevalence among women of reproductive age is also high and geographically widespread.

    “The prevalence of malnutrition among women ranges from two percent in the south east to ten percent in the North east and rates are particularly high for adolescent mothers of between 15-19 years, as compared to women aged 20-49 years.”According to UNICEF in Kaduna state (North central) 1.6 million children are malnourished; while malnutrition is responsible for the death of under five in the state;

900,000 children representing 57% children in the state are stunted meaning six out of every ten children less than five are stunted due to malnutrition.”

Dr. Francis Eremutha listed some of the key nutritional problems are as follows: Poor Infant feeding practices, Energy and Protein deficiencies Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), Iron deficiency Anaemia (IDA),

Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD], adding that the nutrition situation in Nigeria has over the years assumed public health proportion with malnutrition accounting for more than 50% of under-five deaths. The CEO advocates for adequate and dedicated budget for nutrition in the area councils of the FCT while also urging that area council administrations should be compelled to appropriate funds for the National Strategic Plan of Action for nutrition implementation.

  • Alert! Fake muslim group emerges

    Preamble

Today’s article is starting with apology to the readers of ‘The Message’ for the inability of their beloved column to float on this page last Friday. It was due to a fortuitous failure of technology which yours sincerely was unable to prevent.

    About Ramadan

Ordinarily, if ‘The Message’ had been out in this column last Friday, it would have been about the divine month that seasonally comes into the world to serve as the month of all months and the global guest of all seasons.

Regrettably however, today’s article is still not about Ramadan and that is due to a development, last week, that called for and deserves an urgent attention in this column today. A whole month is ahead of us, commencing from next week, in which we can address Ramadan from all conceivable angles. We pray the Almighty Allah to spare our lives.

    ‘Opium of the People’

In spite of the quoted maxim (by an American poet) at the opening of this article, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for religious acrimony and malice in the Southwest of Nigeria.

The battle for peoples’ souls in the name of God continues to rage unabatedly between the Christians and the Muslims in the region albeit on a disguised platter of materialism. It is difficult to pinpoint with certainty, a dominant colour in a rainbow. The eyes that saw clearly in the dark yesterday may become dim in sighting an object through a bright light today. Thus, in a world where religion has virtually become Karl Marx’  “opium of the people”, it may be difficult to prove that the rampant, deafening noises over religion in contemporary Nigeria is more about obedience to God than loyalty to material wealth. Otherwise, why is a choice of the path to Paradise or to Hell not left to the liberty of every individual without any interference? If genuinely embraced, religion should be a matter of conscience which no mortal being should endeavour to Judge upon. But the contrary is the case in Nigeria. And the real problem area is the Southwest region where no business thrives better than religion. It is quite evident that the foremost industry in the Southwest of Nigeria today is a religious solo with different choruses.

    Strange ‘Muslim’ Group

Last week, the attention of ‘The Message’  column was drawn to a media altercation between a famous Non-Governmental Organization called Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and  a fake group named ‘Oodua Muslim Coalition’ (OMC).

The Director of MURIC is Ishaq Lakin Akintola a Professor of Islamic Eschatology at the Lagos State University (LASU), whose versatility in the propagation of Islam through  human rights advocacy is  well known nationally and inyernationally.

    Oodua Muslim Coaliition’

The so-called Oodua Muslim Coalition (OMC), on the other hand, is so obscure and so fraudulent that no Muslim of note will want to associate with it because of its vague antecedent. Its name alone is

    questionable.

To which Oodua is the amorphous group claiming to be related or affiliated? Is it Oodua, the acclaimed primogenitor of the entire Yoruba tribe who was never related to Islam in any way or Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), which lays no claim to any religion?

    The Mission of OPC

To the best knowledge of all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world, OPC is a trbal youth pressure group in Yoruba land, just like Egbesu of Ijaw tribe, or Massop or IPOB in Igbo land or ACF in the north. And, like those of others, OPC has  no religious inclination in its agenda. It is rather a conglomeration of all comers in Yoruba land irrespective of religious convictions or dialects. If religion has truly crept into OPC, then Christian counterpart of OMC would have emerged. And that would have signaled an albatross for Yoruba as a

    distinct tribal entity.

The fact that some people choose to be Christians while others choose to be Muslims does not confer superiority on some people as an instrument of oppression over others.

The faceless elements behind the so-called OMC must have lost any memory of the possible consequences of their fraudulent plot to use Islam as an instrument of balkanization of the Yoruba land along religious lines. Such is often the case with shallow-minded people whose only focus is the momentary crump they would pick under the dining tables of their masters.

    The Press Conspiracy

Using the Southwest media to baptize the arrival of its clandestine but nefarious plot under the cover of Islamic religion, this amorphous group recently issued a hateful press statement in which it attacked and blackmailed the entire Southwest Muslims calling them names and labeling them  ‘Agents of Hausa Fulani of the North’.

Unfortunately the same Southwest media has never seen the association of the Southwest people with those of the Southeast and South-south in their joint campaign for secession from the commonwealth of Nigeria in the same vein.  OMC’s press statement which was aimed at attack Professor Lakin Akintola of MURIC was foolishly turned into a general tool with which to throw away Islam’s baby with the bathwater in the Southwest.

Even the duo of one Mallam Lateef Adeyera and an Alhaji Ambali Olubodun Noibi who sheepishly but mischievously signed the obnoxious statement as Chairman and Secretary General respectively could not delineate between the sensible and the insensible  if only for firming up their flanks of tribal pedigree.

    Clarification

For clarification, the Muslim Ummah of the Southwest which is the umbrella body for all the State Muslim Councils/Communities as well as Organizations in the six State of the Southwest reagion. And, if as the Southern counterpart of Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) in the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), which has the record of all legitimate Muslim Organizations in the Southwest, does not know the so-called ‘Oodua Muslim Coalition’ what is the antecedent of that fraudulent group?

It is therefore necessary here to warn all genuine Muslim Councils, Communities and Organizations as well as indiduals in the region to beware of certain evil elements who are now parading themselves as Muslim groups or Associations  with the intent of constituting a spiritual virus in the region, Their objective is to break the ranks of the Ummah in order to subject the Muslims to the manacle of Satan..

    Press Statement

In the press statement that the so-called OMC issued recently, the faceless but highly diabolical group adopted the well known tactic and vulgar language characteristic of certain self-acclaimed Yoruba

    leaders.

These elements and their cohorts are notorious for creating amorphous proxies and using them for their anti-Islamic agenda and other evil machinations. Thus, whenever such proxies raise their heads and attempt to dance like a dragon on the surface of a brook, we should automatically know where the drummers are hiding.

    Evil Agents

The contents and language of the said press statement by the so-called OMC could not have come as a surprise to any genuine Muslim Organization  because it has become a recurrent decimal in from their

    masters.

As a divisive gimmick, in the said press statement, the amorvous group, like those of its senior brothers in their clandestine game, told the Southwest Muslims generally, to stop cooperating with the northern Muslims whom it described as enemies of the Yoruba people. It also went ahead to ask them to drop their Islamic identity for a new toga of Yoruba irredentism of the primitive era.

    Unity as Headache

Apparently disturbed by the progressive unity between the Northern and Southwestern Muslims, under the banner of NSCIA, the YSF proxy calling itself OMC ignorantly insinuated that accepting the leadership of the President General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad

Abubakar, CFR, mni, could not profit the Southwest Muslims. It will be recalled that a similar press statement was issued in November 2015 in which one obvious renegade by the name Yinka Odumakin singled out  the venerable personality of the Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, Professor D. O. S. Noibi, OBE, DSc. FISN for a venomous attack just because the latter signed a MUSWEN press release that objected to Afenifere’s threat of secession bid at that time.

    Putting the Record Straight

Ordinarily, MUSWEN, as a responsible Islamic body with millions of Muslim members, would not have reacted to such frivolities, but when some bread and butter parasites in the society attempt to distort plain facts and replace truth with falsehood, ‘The Message’ as an Islamic column will be left with no choice than to put the records straight.

It is immoral for those who in their actions, utterances and body languages, swallow the Christian doctrine hook, line and sinker to hide under unbridled tribal irredentism   to want to prevent  the Muslims of the Southwest Nigeria from associating with their brothers and sisters in other parts of the country.

    Not a Secular Country

Nigeria is a multi-religious and nor a secular country as often claimed by mischievous elements to suit their evil desire. In a country where all citizens are at liberty to choose and practice their religions, no religious bigots have any right to want to prevent other religious groups from practicing their faith.

    Euphoria of the past

Those who are still basking in the now forgotten euphoria of the colonial era should wake up from their slumber and face the reality of the moment. Nigeria is not the the lad of anybody’s father and nobody can claim ownership of it.

    Language of Communication

English language is no longer anybody’s monopoly and it can no longer be used to bamboozle any group into a new slavery or colonialism as in the past. We are all Nigerians. The meaning of the opening poem in this article should suffice for people who can correctly reason. Islam is not for sale in the Southwest Nigeria. Ramadan Karim in advance!

  • Group praises JAMB amid challenges

A civil society   group, Joint Action  Coalition on Education (JACE), has showered encomiums on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the success of the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which began over the weekend. This is in spite of a handful of challenges that confronted the conduct of JAMB UTME.

The group said this year’s edition met set standards when juxtaposed with past experiences, and that a few incidents recorded were largely due to human factor and not by systems or the process

Speaking to  reporters at Ogba, Lagos, the group’s Southwest zonal coordinator Mr Ayokunle Adumashin, noted that no system is ever perfect, adding that the few glitches recorded could be corrected by continuous investment in broadband penetration and stability, in addition to improving on power supply in the country.

Adumashin said the mock UTME conducted a fortnight to the main examination, proved useful in exposing candidates to what to expect in the examination. He admonished the government to strengthen  ICT in secondary schools to ensure that candidates do not experience cyber phobia anytime they are exposed to computers or technology.

He praised JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq  Oloyede, and his team on the handling of the UTME, urging them to conduct an evaluation of the ongoing examination to forstall possible pitfalls in future.

  • Group passes confidence vote on Okorocha

Group passes confidence vote on Okorocha

As critics slam the leadership style of Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, a group Ndi Imo in Lagos whose members are indigenous to the state, has described such criticisms as mere distractions from the opposition and those who have no access to the state’s treasury to pilfer as was the case in the past.

Rising from their monthly meeting held at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre, Okota Lagos, members of the group noted that critics of the policies and programmes of the governor were ignorant of the impressive achievements recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Imo State.

“Within few years in office, Governor Okorocha has achieved laudable, dramatic, and exhilarating changes at all levels of government, in all strata of the state and in every nook and cranny of society. The Rochas’ fame for good governance is applauded by an anonymous many even beyond his state. He has, in a positive manner, touched the lives of the common man to the chagrin of his opponents,” they said.

The group further noted that Rochas is the man the people wanted, adding that he is fulfilling his campaign promises to the people.

“Governor Okorocha is a man who wants to enhance the welfare of the downtrodden. Every technocrat in Imo  State had maintained that free and compulsory education is not possible but he has proved them wrong by providing free and compulsory education for the people,” they said.

On infrastructural development, Ndi Imo in Lagos maintained that Okorocha has performed wonderfully well.

“Consider the number of roads being opened in just few years. It’s incredible and unheard of in any state in Nigeria. People are asking where the money is coming from.  Imo State has enough money to do whatever it wants to do. The unfortunate thing is that previous administrations had been siphoning the money meant for development and taking care of the welfare of the so-called godfathers who take enormous share of the state’s funds every month.

“Rochas has no godfathers except the Almighty God. He is really God-send because he is doing things the way the people want them done,” they said.

The group regretted that unnecessary criticisms in Imo State against all serving and former governors of Imo State was as a result of business men in the state who indulge in partisan politics.

In other states, the group said, business men do not indulge in partisan politics; rather they sponsor those who are interested in politics. They also stated that “Rochas Okorocha has done so well more than any other previous governor of the state which some of us have witnessed when we had visited Imo State in various times.”

On issues of pensioners and workers owed months of salaries, the group maintained that “the impression being created that pensioners and workers were not paid was  erroneous based on our interactions with some of the workers. Pensioners have been paid and are happy for having substantial amount of money to start up tangible businesses.”

Explaining how Governor Okorocha struck a positive deal with pensioners, the Special Assistant to Imo State Governor on Liaison/Liaison Officer Imo State Liaison Office, Lagos, Nze Steve Asimobi said: “Having considered the huge amount of money owed to pensioners by previous administrations, Governor Okorocha summoned the pensioners for a meeting where he discussed with them the possibility of giving them 40 per cent of the backlog of pension arrears owed them by previous administrations while they continue to receive their current monthly pension every month. They agreed, not out of coercion but after many meetings even at ward levels of the concerned pensioners.”

Continuing, the Liaison Officer said: “Governor Okorocha is making giant strides to enhance the economy of the state, noting that some moribund industries have been revitalised. He also revealed that Imo Airport has been approved as an international cargo airport.

“In the circumstances, Governor Okorocha, in his determination to ameliorate the sufferings of Southeast traders, has acquired five cargo aircraft to enable them to bring their goods straight to Imo State instead of going through other states.

“Imo Air, he said, will be operated by Dana Air.

“Again, the dilapidated Imo Concorde Hotel has been revived and it’s fully functional.”

Along Aba Road, he said, there are many industries that are springing up which will provide employment opportunities for Imo people.

The group also noted that it was not correct that Governor Okorocha had sold off most of the parastastals in the state, even as they said some of the parastatals such as Imo Transport Corporation and Imo State Water Corporation were concessioned to some agencies for efficiency and they are working hard to make them efficient, even as they are paying members of their staff.

On security, Ndi Imo in Lagos noted that Imo people can now sleep with their two eyes closed, in contradistinction to what used to be. They revealed that Governor Okorocha had put in place serious security plans that made criminals to flee the state.

They stated that “there are still few isolated cases of kidnap and robbery, Imo Security Network has been able to checkmate the activities of criminals. Robbery and other related vices have drastically reduced.”

The group advised Ndi Imo back home to draw a line between politicking and governance. Mingling politics and governance, they said,  should be consigned to the trash can of history in 2019.

On the mandate for every local government to construct 15 kilometre roads, the group noted that: “If all the 27 local governments construct 15 kilometre roads, it will ensure rapid development.

However, while one may admit that some roads in the grassroots lack quality or standards due to lack of commitment to job specifications on the part of some contractors, it is incontrovertible that no government in Imo State has opened more roads than Okorocha’s administration.

  • Group garners support for APC

    Group garners support for APC

A pro-All Progressives Congress (APC) group in Rivers State, under the aegis of True Rivers Initiatives, has promised to garner support for the party ahead of the 2019 election.
The group also reaffirmed its support for the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, praising him for his role in building the party.
The President-General, Lucky Omenka, who addressed reporters after its inaugural meeting in Port Harcourt, said the group will correct the wrongs experienced within the party in the last elections.
“This True Rivers Initiatives is for the APC and we came up with this initiative based on previous experiences. It’s high time we are carried along in the scheme of things. We, the youths, now have the opportunity to choose our own leaders. We would have the privilege to support anybody who has the competence to be governor,” he said.
Publicity Secretary Comrade Gift Okpara said: “We are not a violent group. This is just a pro- APC group that is ready to ensure the party takes over power in 2019.
“We have declared our support for the party wholeheartedly; we recognise only one leader in the party, and he is the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi. We are not here to support any gubernatorial aspirant, we would only support the candidate chosen by the party and endorsed by our leader, Amaechi.
“We are not sentimental; we are just here to ensure that the right thing is done appropriately.”

  • Group roots for ‘green revolution’

    Group roots for ‘green revolution’

As part of its centennial celebration, the Lions District  404B1 Nigeria has adopted the Tree planting project to save the environment from deforestation.

Last week, Lagos Valiant Lions Club took the campaign for tree planting to Olorunfunmi Junior Grammar School, Idimu, a Lagos suburb, where it planted some trees.

Its President, Mrs Jennifer Benson-Akinremi, said the club selects a project yearly, and that this year’s event specifically came up last month with the choice of saving the environment.

‘’What we are working on was based on a directive from our international office. It is not we only that are doing this, it is all over the world. But we chose this school as our project,’’ she said, adding that the funds for the projects were raised from her colleagues, who are committed to Lions’ three Ts – Talent, Treasure (money) and Time.

She promised to check the plants regularly to ensure that they do not die.  “Our Tree Planting Chairman, Ibrahim Odunsi, would come here to see to that,’’ she added.

Odunsi said they chose the school because they felt that the ‘green revolution’should be taken to the grassroots too. ‘’When you protect the environment, you protect lives,’’ he said.

The state Ministry of Education District 1 Director Dr Olufolayimika Abiose Ayandele, the school’s Principal Mrs Olufunmilayo Adeseri and her deputy Mrs Odeyemi as well as the Head Boy took turns to plant trees, urging that the trees would provide oxygen, shelter and wade off evil winds.

Mrs Ayandele said: “We pray the trees will germinate and give us fresh air in this environment.’’  Mrs Adeseri thanked Lions for the gesture. ‘’We appreciate Lions. May God bless you. We are planting trees. Tree is life,’’ adding: “We also need your assistance in our perimeter fencing. We have tried and tried, but no help came to  us.’’
