Group urges Akeredolu to beware of sycophant politicians

A group, The Aketi Vanguard, has warned the Governor-elect of Ondo State, Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), to beware of sycophants and other desperate politicians, who may want to hijack his soon to be inaugurated administration. The group said it observed that since Akeredolu’s victory at the November 26 governorship election, some desperate politicians have been hanging around him.
It noted that these people have been presenting themselves as the best hands in the state. It however warned that the antecedents of these people are some of the reasons why the state is still crawling. This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Coordinators of the group, Otunba Ola Atere and Victor Faremi, and made available to reporters in Akure, the state capital.
The group leaders lamented that a recent advertorial of Akeredolu’s transition and inauguration committees pointed in the direction that the so called sycophants politicians may be on their way to hijack the incoming government even before its inauguration. They therefore called on the governor-elect to tread cautiously.
The group, which pledged their unalloyed loyalty and total ?commitment to Akeredolu’s incoming administration, charged the governor-elect to select the best brain into his cabinet. They also urged him to ensure that he is not cajoled by some desperate politicians currently hobnobbing with him into making costly mistakes.

  • Group seeks alternative conflict resolution in Niger Delta

Members of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) Nigeria branch gathered in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital recently to discuss the need to adopt use of “Alternative Dispute Resolution” (ADR), in settling issues, rather than the stereotyped court system.

The two-day gathering was put together by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), Nigeria branch. It was the group’s 17th annual conference of the Nigeria’s branch, established in the country in 1999.

The theme of this year’s annual conference was “Exploring New Frontiers in Arbitration and ADR.” Indeed new frontiers are emerging in the arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) plane.

Issues on the proven effectiveness of ADR in resolving conflicts arising from Oil and Gas activities were discussed, with those in mainstream oil operators giving insight to the challenges. The role of Arbitrators in the ongoing terrorism, insurgent attacks, the role of modern technology in conflict creation and how ADR could be a variable means of solving the problems, as well as Nollywood issues, among others were discussed.

Earlier in her address, the branch chairman of the Institute, Mrs. Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivour said: “These are turbulent times for the Oil and Gas industry, effective and expeditious dispute resolution will assist in assuaging the effects of the downturn in the oil market.”

Concerns on new phenomenon and new challenges in Arbitration plane were equally handled by discussants.

In the same manner, new developments such as third party funding currently generating debate in various jurisdictions in view of the need to ensure that ethical considerations or the transparency of the process is not being negatively impacted by the relatively new practice were examined.

According to Vivour, the emerging improvements in industrial and technological knowhow have necessitated expansion in the nature of disputes that arise in the society, coupled with the relatively new forms of threats to the relationship among individuals, nations and corporate organisations, hence the need for faster and effective means of resolving them so they don’t get worse.

“Indeed, terrorism and insurgency threats abound worldwide and further depict the growing level of conflicts in human society. Our mission is the global promotion of the resolution of disputes through mechanisms outside the court system, alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

“We recognise the need to evolve and position ourselves in line with present day challenges and developments. Indeed the continuing relevance of any organisation lay in its ability to adapt to evolving times and maintain its relevance in a changing world.”

She expressed the need for Nigeria to review and upgrade her arbitration laws to accommodate the latest realities.

  • Group urges Buhari to give Ondo new board member at NDDC

Group urges Buhari to give Ondo new board member at NDDC

As the new management board of the Niger Delta Development Commission(NDDC), begins operation at its head office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a group, Youth League of the South West APC, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a new representative for Ondo State on the board of the interventionist agency.

A statement in Akure by the Media/Publicity Director, Southwest Zone, Desmond Iwajomo, noted that since the former state nominee, Mr Tokunbo Ajasin, had been dropped reportedly for not been from an oil producing area, there is need to fill the position with another qualified candidate from the riverine area of the state. The group was optimistic that the Niger Delta would witness another round of robust development with the new management described as men of impeccable character going by their antecedents in public office.

It commended President Muhammadu Buhari for putting together such a team of credible Nigerians who would help to vigorously drive the change agenda in the Niger Delta area through the NDDC if adequately funded by the federal government and other relevant institutions. According to the statement, “we will not be surprised if this board succeeded in transforming the niger delta. It will only shock me if they fail.”

The group described the performance of the former Acting Managing Director, Ibim Semenitari, as excellent, saying she is a true daughter of the Niger Delta and a pride to the women of APC and Nigeria. It said, “unlike what we witnessed in the last administration where women were only concerned about how much they embezzled, Ibim has created a paradigm shift with her 10 months in the saddle as the acting MD, the Niger Delta has witnessed an unprecedented development under her administration.”

“Achieving these and others not mentioned under a regime of treasury single account is a testimony to the competence of the woman. And we believe the President will consider this young, vibrant and intelligent woman for other sensitive position to assist in the change agenda because she still has more to do for the nation,” he said.
