    Group makes case for hijab

National Ameer (President) of the Muslim Students’ Society Of Nigeria (MSSN), Muhammad Jameel Muhammad has described as intolerable the continued denial and discrimination against the use of Hijab.

He spoke at during a courtesy visit to the House Of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker Hon Lasun Sulaiman who received them on behalf of Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

A statement by the National Public Relation Officer, Muhammad Grema Bukar quoted Muhammad as saying that since Hijab has never hindered the users from excelling in all fields, the Islamic dress code should not be denied anymore by any individual, organisation or even government.

“Moreover, as if the plotters against the Hijab are not contented with their unconstitutional act, some of them, he said, have gone ahead to advocate a legislation to totally ban the use of hijab in Nigeria on the pretext that it is used by terrorist as a cover to launch attacks on innocent Nigerians.

“Our query lies in the fact that, in civilised societies, few cases of abuse of something have never been used as an excuse to abolish such an important thing. We therefore call on you to sponsor a bill to enact a specific legislation that will criminalise the denial of the use of Hijab in this country.”

Muhammad expressed dissatisfaction over the action of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), especially in the recent time.

He said: “While we now have some sigh of relief for the timely intervention of the Federal Government on the Board’s imposition of course and institution on the candidates against their choices, we want the relevant authorities particularly the National Assembly to find whether the statutory objectives of JAMB is to generate revenue like FIRS, or to render a necessary social service-access to higher education. This is necessary given the apparent extortion of candidates in the form of sales of scratch to determine one’s posting for post UTME. We call for immediate refund of such monies.”

The National President expressed happiness that the leadership emergence issues of the House of Representatives have been amicably resolved in that a way that there is no winner no vanquished.

“In fact, we should say a win/win type resolution. As we pray the same to happen at the upper chamber, we fervently ask Allah to make the happenings of the previous weeks avenues of knowing one another and knowing the job, which will ultimately usher in a more robust, a more dispassionate and a more united National Assembly, despite multifaceted diversity,” he said.

He lamented the relegation of religious subjects in various academic institutions, saying that “at a time when we seriously need God consciousness, decency, sacrifice among other virtues as antidotes to corruption, immorality and all social vices, it is sad that religion as a subject is relegated to an elective status in our secondary schools. It is equally sad that general course of core status like Moral Philosophy have been made insignificant at a time when our higher institutions of learning are afflicted with cultism, nudity, examination malpractice, intolerance among other indicators of total moral bankruptcy.  We call for a rethink and a quick review of this unpopular, inimical policy.”

Among the team that visited the leadership of the National Assembly include Auwal Yunus (National Secretary General), Bukar, Anas Hamisu Lawal.  (National financial Secretary), Surajuddeen Abdulaziz (National Ex-Officio I) and Abdulhakeem Kolawole (National Islamic Affairs Officer B’Zone) among others.

  • Group demands incentives on water

    Group demands incentives on water

Worried by the high cost of drilling boreholes which makes provision of potable water for Nigerians difficult, the Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), has urged Nigerians who have sunk boreholes in their homes to request for an incentive from either state or federal governments.

AWDROP, which is also bothered by the plight of victims of insurgency in the Northeast equally called on the Federal Government to urgently provide bore-holes for the Internally displaced people in order to avoid epidemic.

The National President of AWDROP, Mr. Michael Ale spoke in Ibadan while addressing journalists. He assured that his association was ready to collaborate with the Federal Government in that regard.

Ale stated that the federal and state governments were not doing enough to provide clean water for the masses.

Ale, an expert in water resources, said indirectly, the private, the masses, and the Nigeria citizens have supported government even more than government can do in providing water for the masses through drilling of boreholes in their homes and offices.

”So, every individual that has sunk boreholes to provide water for themselves should demand incentives from governments because it is government’s responsibility to make potable water available for the citizens of the country.

“For instance, certain individuals have begun establishing  sachet and bottled water factories. So, where government cannot reach, water is being provided in those areas. Also some do not wait for government to provide pipe borne or borehole water because if they wait, they may wait for ages. Therefore, those individuals have sunk boreholes for themselves using their hard earned money.

“Digging or sinking of boreholes in the cities in Nigeria is an indication that the state governments have failed in the provision and distribution of water supply for its citizens. Nigerians are spending much on water generation and that is why governments need to assist them,”he said.

Ale appealed to the Federal Government to implement the National  Water Resources Masterplan by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) of last year in order for Nigerians to have access to potable water in the next 15 years.

The AWDROP boss, who further stated  that no state government in the country has a water masterplan, noted that the state governments have been losing free international water grants as a result of this.

“No State government needs to spend tax payers’ money to provide water for the masses if only they can regulate and have a formidable water policy that will attract water development partners. The role of the Federal Government is to focus on water advisory and regulation, while the state governments shouldprovide good water policy for international grants and the local governments supplies water to the people,” he said.

To improve water distribution in the country, Ale urged government to set up a water rig drilling agency that will subsidise borehole drilling for the masses or support their association to dig for the masses at a lower rate.

“My rating of the government on water distribution to Nigerians from World Health Organisation (WHO) report shows that the government has really improved in meeting with the yearnings of the masses concerning water distribution. Also, going by the prevalent low activities of water-borne diseases and low death rate as a result of water-borne diseases in hospitals indicates that there is improvement.  Nevertheless, the improvement has not been possible without certain individuals that have taken their destinies in their own hands to provide water for themselves,” he said.

The AWDROP president emphasised  that the Federal Government must sink boreholes for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) centres to avert water-borne and communicable diseases.

He noted that the IDP centres are few and AWDROP is ready to partner with government to subsidise borehole drilling for the centres.

Ale, who also lamented on the duplication and abandonment of water projects by international development partners in the country, noted that such acts could be attributed to lack of co-ordination among players in the water sector and lack of sustainable plans.

“There are a lot of duplications in the water sector as far as the development partners is concerned. The root of this problem is lack of trust and that is why the development partners executes the projects themselves.

“So, they will have to go straight to sink boreholes and willl boycott the middlemen, “ he said.

To address these anomalies, he noted that the development partners must see that the ministry involved in their operations are critical to the development of getting results they desire.

According to him, they must build the capacity of the ministries saddled with water supply, build a relationship with them, lecture them, monitor them and evaluate the results.

Assessing the performance of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources on irrigation project in the country, he said the ministry is saddled with the responsibility of co-ordinating, developing, designing, planning and carrying out critical activities relating to water to Nigerians, stressing that the ministry has performed excellently well.

He said: “Irrigation is crucial to farming, and farmers need to have access to water in order to boost food production. The Ministry of Water Resources has been doing well because we have not experienced famine in the country so far. Nigerians may not know the role of the irrigation department of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources until we have famine.

  • Group canvasses power shift in Kogi

Ahead of the governorship election in Kogi State, a group, under the Kogi Equity Initiative (KEI), has called for power shift from the East Senatorial District to another zone in the state.

The group alleged that, since the creation of the state in 1991, the slot and other key political appointment have been skewed towards an ethnic group.

In a communiqué in Ilorin KEI chairman and secretary, Dada Fehinti and Comrade Taiwo Otitolaye said power should shift to give the zones a sense of belonging.

“We are united by common destiny of political equity, power shift and social justice in line with the collective aspirations of our people that have been marginalized for over twenty years.” the group said.

  • Group seeks road map for maritime

THE Federal Government has been urged to design a road map for the maritime industry.

Ship ownership, improved cargo and passenger volume, reliable utilities, security and a concerted war against corruption are some of the major means of developing the sector – according to the Sifax Group chief Dr. Taiwo Afolabi.

Speaking at the at the just-concluded Nigerian Maritime Expo (NIMAREX) in Lagos, Afolabi, represented by one of his directors, Major Henry Ajetunmobi (rtd), spoke of the need to take advantage of the huge economic potential of the industry to enhance the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Based on the dwindling oil revenue, the government, industry regulators, agencies, investors, financiers, operators and other stakeholders should post resources to boost the economy

On the allegation that shipping companies and terminal operators are imposing arbitrary charges at ports, the Sifax boss called for a cautious approach.

“The issues, no doubt, calls for the wisdom of Solomon as well as random eclectic borrowings from the principles long adopted by other maritime nations, especially those in the advanced world that have made a huge success of privatization in their own ports and terminals.

But over and above this, is the need for the economic regulator, acting in full consultation with critical stakeholders, to seek to regulate the industry, with a clearly perceived passion to balance and protect the interests of all parties to avoid crisis.

“We must begin to take measures now to develop other critical sectors of the economy, particularly in agriculture and optimal exploitation of the vast deposits of our solid mineral and non-oil natural resources, to generate enough cargo that can challenge the present high volume of our import cargo throughput that has given us our present unflattering image as a chronic import-dependent nation.” he said.

He said that it wasn’t enough for the country to be contented with the huge natural endowments of long coastline and urged investors to finance the acquisition of vessels, particularly Nigerian-flagged ones with the capacity to participate in deep ocean-going international trade.

He noted that the revamping of public utilities would serve as incentive to current and prospective investors in the industry, adding that improved security that guarantees the safety of persons and goods around our maritime assets and a committed war against endemic corruption will lead to rapid development in the industry.
