  • Group seeks support for cocoa farmers

Cocoa farmers require more support to apply global best practices in their operations, the Project Manager of the Olakoko Sustainability Project, Mrs. Mopelola Fabunmi, has said.

Mrs Fabunmi spoke during the commemoration of Farmers’ Day at Igbara-Oke, near Akure, the Ondo State capital, where 2,851 farmers from Edo, Osun, Ogun, and Ondo states participated.

The project manager said Nigeria is in a pole position to increase its yield of cocoa and ensure improved quality of the produce as well as improve the quality of lives of farmers.

She recalled that in over two years of its operation, the Olakoko Project had trained more than 8,000 farmers from Edo, Ogun, Osun and Ondo states.

Mrs Fabunmi said: “We do not relent in our efforts at ensuring that farmers are thoroughly trained on farm practices and passing necessary information required to improve agricultural yields.”

Highlights of the Farmers’ Day included the Farmers’ Market, which provided an avenue for farmers to get farm inputs for cocoa and other crops as a means of diversification.

Mrs Fabunmi said: “One of the aims of the project is to ensure that farmers take good care of their farms (fruits and soil) to get good quality cocoa beans there. We do this by linking them to sources of good inputs, such as fungicide, insecticide, herbicides and others, which are approved by authorised bodies such as CRIN.

“We also encourage diversification of other crops during the cocoa off-season. Thus, the essence of the Farmers’ Market is that farmers can have closer interaction with the input and agro dealers and they in turn sell to them at subsidized price.”

  • Saraki v police: Group holds procession in support of police

    •Women organise prayers for Saraki

Group under the aegis of Association of Offa Indigenes Home and Abroad yesterday staged a peaceful procession in support of the police high command on the alleged indictment of Senate President Bukola Saraki by suspects in the Offa robbery incident.

Some youths had on Monday staged peaceful rallies in Ilorin and Offa in support of Senator Saraki.

The yesterday’s precession took off at Iyeru-Okin LEGA primary school, through Ibrahim Taiwo road to Idi-Ogun via Olofa way and terminated at Eid praying ground in Offa. The protesters from passed through Owode market and converged on Olofa of Offa Palace.

In his remark Spokesperson of the association Muideen Babalola said “in whatever we do our past has a way of catching up with us like a dodging shadow. God has answered our prayers in Offa. Our cries have been heard. The whole world has seen it all and our prayers are that ‘justice must prevail.”

Another speaker at the event Prince Femi Whyte said that “in the court of the police investigation, some top politicians were mentioned to be remotely connected to the robbery incident in Offa. But to our dismay and sadness these politicians mobilized some political jobbers to protest in their favour to jeopardize the ongoing investigation by the police.”

The Asalofa of Offa,  Chief Isiaka Shittu who received the protesters on behalf of the monarch Oba Muftau Gbaramosi assured of conveying the message to the Plots who was not around.

He hailed the peaceful manner with the association members compuncted themslves.

Also in Ilorin,  scores of Kwara women organised a special prayer, asking God to grant the Senate President Bukola Saraki victory in his present travails in the hands of the Nigeria Police Force .

The woman recited verses from the holy Qur’an and prayed fevently to God to protect  the Senate President whom they described as their benefactor.

Addressing journalists during the prayer session, leader, of the group, Hajia Ramat Oganija , said they resorted to prayer because they were convinced that Saraki who they said was being implicated in the recent Offa bank robbery incident “cannot hurt a fly ‘’.

She said Saraki had encouraged entrepreneurship  by empowering women and youths in the state to be economically self reliance.

Hajia Oganija said that the news of “the invitation of our God – given leader and benefactor. Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the President of the Senate by the police over the recent Offa robbery attacks came to us a rude shock.

“We were and still shocked by the development because over the years we have known our leader, Dr Bukola Saraki as a compassionate and kind hearted man who could not hurt a fly. Our leader abhors violence in all its ramifications.”

She added: “Just like every right thinking individuals, we, women of Kwara state see the police latest action as nothing but a fresh plot by the Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, Abuja to implicate the President of the Senate in the April 5,2018 dastardly armed robbery attacks on banks in Offa “

Also, the Offspring Descendents Union (ODU) urged the police to do a thorough investigation on the Offa robbery case.

In a statement by the National President and Secretary General of the union Alhaji Najimdeen Usman Yasin Hajia (Chief) Mrs Wosilat Tinuke Macarthy said: “While we do not want to prejudice the ongoing investigation by the police on this case, the community will appreciate thoroughness to ensure equity and Justice on the matter.

“Dr. Bukola Saraki, a two-term former governor of this state and the President of the Senate Of this country has always considered Offa as a second home. The Offa people are well bred citizens and are always appreciate of kind gesture and immeasurable benevolence. The community therefore holds the Senate President in high esteem however, this is not to distract or disturb the investigation by the police.

“Considering the sensitivity nature of this matter, the community will appreciate if all the social media and media outfits would validate all reports before dissemination.”

  • Group to media: be more circumspect

The Buhari Patriotic Movement (BPM) yesterday called on the media to be more circumspect in their reports as the 2019 general elections draw closer.

Historically, BPM said, the media have been an important pillar of democratic successes recorded in the country.

BPM National Women Leader Saada Baba Mohammed in a statement enjoined the media to be more cautious in treating information available from different partisan sources.

She said: “As 2019 draws near and people become more entrenched in their partisan political views, the media will be increasingly called upon to play their constitutional role of society watchdog. They should provide a good context and background to stories to enable citizens make informed choices on them.

“The media have sacrificed a lot for the successes recorded in the previous and current democratic dispensations in Nigeria. Numerous journalists were victims of political assassinations, detentions without trial, forced exile, loss of jobs through proscription of media houses. Therefore, the media have an important stake like any other institution in the society to protect the gains of this democratic dispensation.”

  • Group warns against arms’  build up across Benue communities for renewed killings

The Middle Belt Conscience Guard’s  (MBCG) says it has uncovered sinister plots by some communities in Benue State to upscale arms build up in order to torment the peace of others and heightened the state of insecurity in the State.

It described as frightening the deliberate attempt by stakeholders in the state to ignore peaceful approaches in resolving communal clashes but resorted to using sophisticated guns to kill innocent citizens whilst the State and LGAs all watch with amazement.

Paul Itodo, General Secretary of the group addressing newsmen on Monday, faulted the so-called leaders for worsening the situation instead of finding a lasting panacea to it.

Itodo lamented that it was unfortunate because the latest killings in the state were as result of communal and no longer herdsmen.

    His statement reads full.

We have elected upon ourselves to alert relevant stakeholders to troublesome issues, potent enough to cause anarchy, large scale outbreak of violence or skirmishes and its concomitant deaths and displacements of people within communities in the Benue valley.

Emphatically therefore, the MBCG is again perturbed and distressed at the glaring replacement of the waning herders/farmers clashes, in the Benue valley with communal clashes.

The Nigerian Army has worked relentlessly, day and night to subdue the herders/farmers imbroglio and it is unacceptable and insane for anybody or group to scheme its replacement with inexplicable communal fracas and politically induced violence or killings in hitherto peaceful and law abiding communities. More irritating is its active backing by unscrupulous traditional rulers, detractors and politicians who profit from such crisis.

Everyone is aware of the imposition of horrifying magnitudes of political violence, orchestrated by unconscionable politicians in conspiracy with vulnerable community leaders at the eve of every general election year, more pronounced during electioneering campaigns. This dreadful era is with us again.

The hot and competitive scramble for elective mandates by politicians often exhume ancient land disputes and allied disagreements, such as family feuds which have been forgotten for ages. These controversies are now elevated to the level of conflicts between opposing communities, leading to unprecedented violence and deaths in the quest to promote partisan and clannish interests for the benefit of election mandate seekers of rival communities.

It is sad that the same scenario is replicating in 2018 and it appears to be Benue’s heaviest cross now.  We have accessed intelligence reports which suggest that rival politicians have plotted various evil schemes to set their communities on conflagrations, which would later be blamed on the herders/farmers skirmishes.

We stand to make the distinction and bear witness that some communities have already been visited with violence, deaths and displacements of people in communal clashes in the last few weeks in Benue state. The immediate and remote causes of the violent squabbles are within the confines of the aforementioned.

In Ukum, the Mbagwa and Mbagen clans in Torov district recently exercised this satanic might in bloodbath, in communal clashes that had political undertones. Likewise, in  Konshisha, the Ugambe and Mbamaa clans in Shangev-Tiev district have locked horns in communal dispute.

And in other LGAs of the state, the songs and drums of communal clashes are excitedly chorused and skillfully planned. Enough havoc has been wreaked already with terrifying magnitudes of violence and deaths on the local populations.

And the obnoxious and predetermined evil actions have not only been sustained, but are spreading to other parts of the state, with the speed of a tornado. It is reportedly evidenced in amazing arms build-up to empower feuding parties in the crude and barbaric display of strength in extermination of selves.

Kwande, Katsina-Ala  and Apa LGAs of Benue state have  also  come under the  latest  furnace  of  communal clashes and some  communities have continued to arm locals against their neighbours or themselves.   Unfortunately, politicians are allegedly responsible for the arming and persuasion of natives into violent confrontations for selfish political reasons, instead of amicable resolution of disputes, if any.

We have gathered that land dispute has just rocked Mbachom clan in Kwande LGA, which is the cradle and symbol of Tiv traditional and cultural essence. Again, scores have lost their lives or wounded and others displaced by the fracas. This is completely unnecessary and retrogressive.Conversely, in Katsina-Ala LGA yesterday, June 3, 2018, unidentified armed gunmen attacked a family in Tse-Adoor village. The assailants killed seven people and injured another six persons during the attacks.  Insider sources have confirmed that the attack was politically motivated and targeted at a specific family over a subsisting land dispute and other economic factors   involving two families in Tse-Adoor village.

Though, the situation has been brought under control by the Nigerian Army and, assisted by sister security agencies. But it is extremely unreasonable and questions our sense of humanity and justice to seek to aggravate the already tense security situation in the area with violent reprisals over a family feud.

The MBCG is equally concerned by the boldness of the Ugbobi community, which is audaciously plotting a reprisal attack on Edukwu community in the narrow-mindedness of self- defence.  In June, 2018,  Ugbobi sons and daughters domiciled in Makurdi converged in North Bank, with the sole agenda of  raising  funds to purchase ammunitions to battle their neigbouring clan of Edukwe.

Similar meetings of the community members outside of Benue state were reportedly replicated Lagos, Abuja, and other towns. And the monies realized for this destructive agenda were immediately transmitted to arrowheads in the village for ammunitions.  That’s the level of bestiality we have become and proudly brandish.

We are thoroughly bemused and stunned by this show of shame. It is senseless, destructive and condemnable in all gradations by men of good conscience. Those who think, warring is the best option out of disputes are making  grave mistakes; that’s why they are easily lured into combatants either against themselves or neighbours by satanic minds.

Benue vallay has had enough share of violence and it is disservice to these communities for the political elite and  these agents of darkness  to continue to arm them for avoidable  wars, instead of  preaching peace and  harmonious co-existence to attract the much needed  development to these communities.

This easy resort to violence has serious consequences and astonishing implications on the communities figured in the communal disputes.  Apart from worsening the already prevailing crises   between herdsmen/farmers; it would exacerbate the burden of securing these communities, by forceful enthronement of peace on our conspicuously and needlessly sapped or already stretched military and other security agencies.

And in the midst of these rising tensions and escalating violence within our borders, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom  and his indoctrinated Local Government chairmen prefer to  hold tightly to  sumptuous  monthly   security votes instead of deploying it to its useful  statutory function of nipping crisis in the bud, and  securing lives  and property of the citizenry.

So, killings in Benue and its environs have become normal and oddly celebrated with mass burials and philanthropic donations of cash and relief materials by sympathetic Nigerians. The joy they derive from it remains to be seen; but it is quite odd, to say the least.

It mocks sound reasoning that we gleefully set the stage of violence, atrocious and other heinous crimes against ourselves and thereafter search for scapegoats to pass the bulk of blame.  The Fulani herdsmen have become weeping children to blame for every action of violence and deaths; we pleasantly initiate and execute to protect a name we do not deserve.

We cannot continue to destroy ourselves in this brazen manner, while other regions of the nation have embraced peace and experiencing the dividends of democracy under President Muhammadu Buhari.

We shall continue to suffer neglect and abandonment, unless these aberrations’ cease forthwith. Let’s allow reign peace among ourselves and with our neighbours. The traditional rulers and council chairmen must wake up from their slumber and burden themselves to end this nonsense.

From our findings, we have been able to establish that the   Nigerian Army and other security agencies have put in their very best these past years and in the last months, particularly, to   quench the wildfires of bloodletting in some of the areas, the agents of darkness have caused considerable confusion and destructions.

It behooves on us to conduct ourselves in a manner we shall  not be wrongly seen and adjudged  as expanding the frontiers’ of battle and combat,  rather than  peace and harmony for the unity and development of all components of Nigeria, including the Middle Belt.

It is frustrating to national government and a shame to us that we have confirmed in public domain the speculations that this time, it is not herdsmen invading, burning, killing and displacing us. But sadly, by the latest developments, Benue people have loudly proclaimed to Nigeria that they have   armed themselves against themselves and their lands.

  • Group tasks govt on accountability, governance

The Red Card Movement (RCM) has called on government at all levels to follow the principles of accountability and sound governance principles in the interest of the economy.

The group, which applauded the success recorded at its launch in North-east, North-central, North-west, South-south and South-east, has also advanced to South West as regional launch holds in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

The group which takes its message to the streets, said it will hold a rally at Femak filling station, Ojoo, Moniya road on May 26.

Its Convener and Former World Bank Vice President, Oby Ezekwesili reminded Nigerians of the crucial roles they have to play to make Nigeria the country of their dreams. “The first step toward this is for them to register and collect their Permanent Voter Card (PVC). This should be followed by coming out on election dates and vote out bad leaders that have held Nigerians down through bad and incompetent governance styles,” she said.

Ezekwesili emphasises that bad governance has led to the cyclical truncation of democracy in Nigeria, and where we have had democracy, it turned out to be a far cry from what true democracies represents. This has been the norm since the termination of the First Republic in 1966.

As a result of these abnormalities, key institutions, systems, principles and ethos that underpin democratic practice has remained extremely problematic and largely underdeveloped. One of such key institutions are dynamic, strong, inclusive and accountable political parties that can articulate sound policy positions and inspire confidence that they – the political parties -are capable of governing effectively when voted in by the electorate.

According to her, Nigeria’s weak political structure has made it quite challenging producing credible, competent and capable leaders who have the interests of the nation at heart. One of the fundamental reasons is the fact that the party structures are filled with politicians with vested tribal, religious or regional interests rather than the interest of a vibrant and prosperous Nigeria.

It is to fill this important vacuum that the movement is stepping in to sensitise Nigerians on the need to vote out bad leaders by identifying political parties and politicians that have nothing to offer the country. As the RCM advances to other part of the country, it will be reminding Nigerians on how to key into the movement’s objectives.

  • Group hails President’s achievements, speech

INTER Party Advisory Council (IPAC) National Chairman Muhammed Nalado has hailed the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari led-All Progressives Congress (APC) administration as read in his democracy day speech.

Nalado, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday, said the achievements listed in Buhari’s speech were verifiable and that Nigerians could judge them.

He said the fight against corruption by the Buhari-led administration had helped to correct a lot of wrong practices, adding that it had brought the country back on track.

“In the area of security, even though we still have insecurity challenge, this administration has been able to reduce it, though government can still do more to protect Nigerians.

“The insecurity in the Northeast has reduced and the numbers of road blocks across the country have reduced.

“Our foreign reserve has also increased. Many children are now benefiting from the Home Grown School Feeding Programme. I believe in what Buhari said he has done,” he said.

He added that government policy on diversification had also helped many Nigerians to go back to farming unlike before that the country’s economy relied solely on oil revenue.

Nalado also said Nigerians have course to celebrate democracy day, saying the sustained long years of democracy was an evidence that politicians and democratic governments were back on track, in spite of contrary opinions.

  • Group seeks prudent use of govt resources

The Red Card Movement (RCM) has called on government to prudently use earned revenues on projects that promote common good.

The group, which was successfully launched in Gombe, has taken its revolt against decades  of wastages in government to the streets of Nigeria.

It is also campaigning against leadership failure and bad governance by asking Nigerians to register and vote.

According to Oby Ezekwesili –the convener of the movement – the Gombe launch, which was held yesterday, is coming on the heels of the Abuja and Jos outings which have consistently shown that Nigerians are beginning to understand the nexus between voter apathy and bad governance.

Just like she did in the previous launches, Ezekwesili reminded Nigerians of the crucial roles they have to play to make Nigeria the country of their dreams. The first step toward this is for them to register and collect their Permanent Voter Card (PVC). This should be followed by coming out on election dates and vote out bad leaders that have held Nigerians down through bad and incompetent governance styles.

Ezekwesili pointed out that bad governance has led to the cyclical truncation of democracy in Nigeria, and where we have had democracy it turned out to be a far cry from what true democracies represents. This has been the norm since the termination of the First Republic in 1966.

  • Women group rallies against killer-disease

About 2.7 million Nigerian women are suffering from Rhesus disease, Rhesus Solution Initiative (RSI) President, Mrs Olufunmilayo Banire, has said.

The statistic, she said, amounted to 5.9 per cent of Nigerian women being Rhesus negative.

Rhesus factor is a protein found on the surface of the red blood cells and can be inherited from parents.  Rhesus incompatibility comes in when the mother is Rhesus Negative and the baby is Rhesus Positive.

Mrs Banire spoke in Ikorodu during RSI Walk for Life from Government College near Agric Bus Stop to Ikorodu Local Government.

Rhesus negative, she said, accounted for the high rate of still births and loss of babies.

She said Rhesus incompatibility had no link with witchcraft or Abiku

She said, so many people are ignorant of the disease, hence it deserves attention.

“According to the National Population Commission (NPC), out of 195 million Nigeria populations, women are about 86 million. 5.9 per cent of these women have Rhesus disease.  With our birth rate, it means that over 400,000 children would be affected with Rhesus disease,” she said.

She described the statistics as disturbing.

She said: “Nigerians are ignorance about the disease because the government and citizens believe it is not a  common disease like malaria, typhoid fever, polio and HIV. If the United States with just 10,000 deaths was able to proffer a solution 50 years ago. Why can’t Nigeria that has over 400,000 children affected? You can imagine how enormous the problem is.

“It is actually causing a lot of pains in our homes, causing broken homes, people are being stigmatised.”

She said it is important for the public to know their rhesus factors, blood group and genotype.

“RSI is sensitising the public on the need to know their rhesus factors, blood group and genotype. We are taken it to the grass root, secondary schools most especially to catch them young. Rhesus negative women must get Rhogam Anti D injection 28 weeks into their pregnancies and within 72 hours after birth. The injection will save them from miscarriage and delivery of dead babies or babies with Sickle Cell anaemia,” she said.

She urged women to check their babies’ rhesus factors, blood group and genotype the moment they put to bed, saying “such child that is rhesus negative should be counselled right from childhood. By the time the child is becoming of teenage age, the child already knows what is expected and the risk involves when she goes through an abortion.”

Banire said the treatment is a major concern because prophylaxis injection is expensive for an average Nigerian.

“The injection is about N30,000 and you imagine the income of an average Nigerian, which is N18, 000. So how much of that would be required before the person can afford the injection during pregnancy and three days after delivery. So it is a big problem. At RSI, we are assisting the victims but we are unable to attend to everybody; that is why we want the government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to our aid so that this disease will be totally eradicated,” she said.

  • Group launches ticket app

A firm, Ticket Planet has launched a platform where everything related to ticket can be sourced.

The platform also provided movie lovers opportunity to buy tickets.

Speaking on the platform launched in Ikeja, Ticket Planet founder Pascal Eze said the platform was developed for strategic reasons, stressing that the ongoing work in Lagos is to encourage tourism and make lifestyle a convenience one.

He said: “We are trying to tap in with such drive to make it a win –win situation for everybody in Lagos and of course Africa. On our platform, you can buy tickets for events, shows, movies, transports, toll gates and others.

“We are partnering with every player in aviation industry and have already sign on with Air peace as well as starting integrated process with Med-view airline. We have also signed on with Genesis, you can now buy ticket to see films in Genesis anywhere in Nigeria on our platform.”

Eze noted that the platform is different from others because it offers everything about ticketing, adding “This is an idea borne out of a sheer desire of offering solution to Nigerians. We know how the traditional tickets work. You have to go to where to get to the airport or travelling agents to get your air ticket and after that you approach another platform to get movie, football, toll and bus tickets, what this platform has done is to coalesce the process into a hub for convenience as a lifestyle.”

According to him, there is an ongoing talk with the banks for partnership, where prospective users can buy the firm’s products from their mobile bank application.
