    Gunmen abduct Benue Commissioner

    Gunmen have abducted Benue Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Matthew Abo. 

    He was abducted around 8pm on Sunday at his residence in Zaki-Biam. 

    Eyewitnesses the gunmen came on four motorcycles, ordered everyone in the house, including the commissioner’s wife and children to lie face down and took him away to an unknown destination on one of the motorcycles.

    The witnesses said the abductors compelled the commissioner at gun point to sit behind the rider of one of the motorcycles while a gunman sandwiched him.

    The matter has been reported to the police.

    The Special Adviser on Security to the Governor Chief Joe Har confirmed the incident. 

    Abo was sworn in as a member of the Benue State Executive Council on August 29, 2023.

    He hails from Ukum local government area which has been a major flashpoint of criminal activities with rampant killings and kidnappings in recent times.

     Benue Police Command was yet to confirm the incident  as of press time.

    Gunmen kill community leader in Plateau

    Gunmen on Saturday night killed the Ardo of Panyam in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Alhaji Adamu Gabdo.

    Transition Committee Chairman of Mangu Local Government Area, Markus Artu, in a statement, condemned the murder. He described it as ‘barbaric’, and ‘a deliberate act by hoodlums to plunge the council into another round of chaos’.

    Artu, who assured the people that security operatives are on the trail of perpetrators, also distanced them from the incident. According to him, the Mangu people had since resolved to live peacefully with each other, irrespective of tribe or religion, and would not allow anyone come between them.

    No fewer than ten rampaging gunmen have shot dead three members of Edo State Security Network (ESSN), who were on duty at Okhun in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo.

    It was gathered yesterday evening that the killings had to do with a fierce leadership tussle in the community and cult groups’ reprisal.

    A member of ESSN, who simply identified himself as Commander Small Baba, disclosed that the security men moved in, when they got information that some hoodlums were shooting sporadically in the community.

    He said: “We swung into action immediately we were informed, but we were attacked by the hoodlums on Thursday night. They killed three of my men in the process.

    “I was also shot on my right hand by the hoodlums, but I managed to escape.”

    Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwanbuzor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), stated that he had not been briefed by the area’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO), but promised to get the details.

    It will be recalled that two persons were earlier killed in the same Okhun, which led to inter-cult war in Benin, and later led to the death of no fewer than ten persons.

    Gunmen kidnap Catholic priest, six others in Enugu

    A Catholic priest, Rev. Father M. Okide of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and six other travellers have reportedly been kidnapped in Enugu.

    The incident occurred on Sunday between 4:30pm and 5pm along Eke-Affa-Egede Road in Udi Local Government.

    It was learnt that the kidnappers have made phone contacts with relatives of the victims, demanding N100 million as ransom.

    Gunmen shot farmer dead over land dispute in Osun

    A communal crisis is looming between Ilobu and Ifon-Orolu of Osun State after unknown gunmen killed a farmer named Sodiq on a disputed land yesterday.

     The Nation recalled that the Ilobu in the Irepodun local government area and Ifon of Orolu local government area of Osun state have been at loggerheads with each other over some portion of land. Meanwhile, the Ilobu community had raised alarm about two weeks ago alleging that Ifon-Orolu is planning to cause mayhem in some parts of the disputed land in the Opapa area.

     In the recent development, a farmer simply identified as Sodiq who has his farm on the disputed land was shot dead by unknown gunmen yesterday.

     The Ilobu community through the Public Relations officer is Ilobu-Asake Development Union, Tairu Babatunde disclosed that one Sodiq of Aganna’s compound, Ilobu was killed on his farm around the Opapa area of the community.

    He alleged that “Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji, and a Prince of Ifon-Osun, Jide Akinyooye have finally carried out their threats by killing an indigene of Ilobu identified as Sodiq of Aganna’s. A team of police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Ilobu have removed the corpse. We urge security to arrest the duo.”

    Gunmen kill PDP chieftain at wife’s shop in Osun

    Chaos erupted in Ada, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun state as armed individuals attacked the community, resulting in the tragic death of Dele Agboola, a 42-year-old chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The Nation gathered that the gunmen numbering about four stormed the Pako area of the community where the wife of the deceased’s shop was located to perpetrate the dastard act. 

    According to a security source, “Dele is a chieftain of PDP till his death. He was shot while eating at his wife’s shop in the Pako area of Ada around 8 PM on Thursday. The reason and Identity of the killers are yet to be unravelled, however, the family members prevented us from taking the remains of the deceased to the hospital for an Autopsy test.”

    Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kehinde Adeleke confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

    She said: “Mr Agboola has been buried around 8:30 AM on Friday by his family members.”

    Gunmen kidnap Rivers poet, demands N20m ransom

    Unidentified gunmen have whisked away a Port Harcourt-based poet Keneddy Adele, while returning to the metropolis from Abuja.

    Adele reportedly went to Abuja for a performance but was said to be returning late to Port Harcourt when gunmen accosted the vehicle conveying him and other occupants and took them away to an unknown destination.

    His wife, Faith Adele, said her husband was supposed to be home on Monday, September but that he and other passengers were kidnapped.

    Adele said that the abductors had contacted her to demand a ransom of N20million.

    She said: “He was kidnapped on Monday 11th of September. The kidnappers reached out to me on Tuesday around 10am demanding a ransom of N20million”.

    Friends and colleagues of Kennedy were said to have started an online campaign to gather the necessary funds for his ransom to enable him regain his freedom.

    When contacted, Rivers Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the police had yet to receive any official report on the incident.

    Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent Police, said: ” We are yet to get such report. If there is anything of such, I”m appealing to them to report to the nearest police station so we can verify and begin investigation”.

    Gunmen kill House of Reps campaign DG in Abi

    Unknown gunmen have reportedly murdered Zachary Nmaduka, the Director General (DG) of the Labour Party (LP) candidate for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the 2023 National Assembly election, Hon. Amobi Oga.

    Reports about his death were sketchy at the time of filing the report, but it was gathered that the suspected attackers killed and beheaded the 70-year-old man and dumped his body in a bush.

    The Abia state police command spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka in a statement on Thursday, September 14, said: “On September 13, 2023, at approximately 8:30 pm, the DPO Uturu Police division on discreet information concerning the unfortunate murder of Hon. Zachary Nmaduka, also known as Power Zack M, a 70-year-old native of Ezieke Akpukpa Uturu.

    “Mr Nmaduka was violently attacked, shot, and beheaded by unidentified assailants while he was at a drinking joint in Amelechi Akpukpa community.

    “Upon receiving this distressing information, a joint team comprising police and army personnel was swiftly dispatched to the scene. Tragically, they recovered Mr. Nmaduka’s lifeless body.

    “Photographic evidence was captured at the scene, and the deceased’s remains were promptly evacuated and deposited at Marist Mortuary Uturu. Investigations are currently ongoing.”

    Maigemu District of Jos East Local Government of Plateau State was thrown into confusion yesterday when gunmen stormed the community and kidnapped a clergyman and three other persons.

    The Nation gathered that the gunmen invaded ECWA Church at Nuku, Maigemu, at about 5:40am and kidnapped a clergyman in his home. He was taken away in the presence of his family.

    A leader in the community said the gunmen, who operated unhindered for close to 40 minutes, also abducted three other persons, namely Usman Umaru, Agwom Dauda and a woman simply identified as Sarah.

    The source said the gunmen, who released gunshots into the air to scare people, especially ‘vigilantes’ and hunters from coming out for rescue, left with their victims in a car, while others followed on their motorcycles.

    It was learnt that the security men, ‘vigilantes’ and hunters are combing the hills in the vicinity, to apprehend the kidnappers and their accomplices terrorising the local government.

    A relative of the clergyman, who spoke with The Nation on condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers had not contacted the family for ransom.

    Police spokesman DSP Alfred Alabo, who confirmed the incident, said men of the command were on top of the situation to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
