    Gunmen kill two policemen in Imo

    Gunmen on Sunday attacked a police patrol team at Finas Gas Station along the Okigwe-Umuahia Road in Imo State, killing two officers.

    It was learnt that the second officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police kidnapped during the attack is feared dead.

    The source said the attack occurred around 9am when the team, led by ASP Casmir, was stationed near the Old Gariki area in Okigwe, a spot described by the source as  a “dangerous zone.”

    According to the source, Police Constable Oluebube was shot and killed during the ambush, while his service firearm was taken by the gangsters.

    He said ASP Casmir and his AK-47 rifle are currently missing, raising fears he may have been abducted and killed.

    “One PC Oluebube was killed in action and his smoke gunner carted away. ASP Casmir and his AK-47 rifle is missing. Other members of his team have returned to base with their rifles and are currently receiving medical care,” the statement said.

    Gunmen on Sunday launched a deadly attack on a police patrol team near Finas Gas Station along the Okigwe-Umuahia Road in Imo State, killing a police constable and reportedly abducting an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

    The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. near the Old Gariki area in Okigwe, which sources described as a “dangerous zone.”

    “During the ambush, Police Constable Oluebube was shot dead, and his service rifle was taken by the attackers. ASP Casmir, who led the patrol team, has been missing since the attack, and fears are growing that he may have been abducted and killed.

    “One PC, Oluebube, was killed in action, and his smoke gunner carted away. ASP Casmir and his AK-47 rifle are missing. Other members of his team have returned to base with their rifles and are currently receiving medical care,” a source disclosed.

    The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday and said a manhunt has been launched to apprehend those responsible.

    Spokesman for the Command, Henry Okoye, said the attackers are believed to be affiliated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN), based on preliminary findings.

    “An intense operation is ongoing to apprehend the miscreants responsible for the attack,” Okoye said. “We are aware that some may question why IPOB is being mentioned, but we cannot ignore confessional statements by suspects who openly associate their actions with the group. As a law enforcement agency, it is our duty to report facts as uncovered during investigations.”

    Gunmen, cultists kill police inspector, corporal, vigilante in Rivers, Plateau

    Gunmen suspected to be herders have killed a police inspector, Yakubu Dauda, and seized his rifle in the Chwelnyap Rim community of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.

    Also in Rivers State, rampaging cultists have killed a police corporal identified as Francis Friday and a member of a vigilante group, OSPAC, Ngozi Ipah, beside the Ahoada East Council Secretariat.

    Confirming the Plateau State incident to journalists in Riyom during a visit by the fact-finding committee set up by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to investigate the causes of violence plaguing the state, David Tsado, the DPO of Riyom, said the incident occurred on Monday while officers were on an operation in the area.

    Tsado narrated that the gunmen, who arrived in large numbers, ambushed the officers, resulting in the death of one officer during the operation.

    He explained that the gunmen terrorizing the area were well-armed, adding that despite mobilizing their men after the attack, they were unable to overcome the gunmen’s resistance because they were well armed.

    “Yesterday, my men were on ground in the community following a report of security threats in the area not knowing that some gunmen laid an ambush.

    “In the process of tracing the gunmen, they opened fire on our men and one of us, inspector Yakubu Dauda, unfortunately lost his life. His copse has been deposited in the hospital.

    “Today, the commissioner of police deployed more men to take the fight to their den, but it was another heavy encounter. It got to a stage that we have to retrieve,“ the DPO said.

    The chairman of the fact finding committee, Major General Nicholas Rogers, while speaking on the committee’s visit to the area, said they were at the council to find out what went wrong resulting to the incessant killing and attacks in the area, adding that “it is a very bad situation. We are here to identify the problems and gathered suggestions from stakeholders on who to would relevant find lasting solutions.

    Youth and community leaders informed the committee that many villages were attacked, adding that in the last one month, about nine persons were killed and 33 houses burnt, hoping that the establishment of the community would bring an end of the attacks.

    It was gathered that the attackers in Rivers State, said to be members of the Iceland cult group, stormed the OSPAC office and opened fire on the operatives.

    The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the development and described it as a brutal attack, noting that it happened at about 8pm on Monday.

    The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the armed assailants were led by two men, Umegbewe Kingsley aka Gutam and one Opaka.

    “During the assault, OSPAC operative Ngozi Ipah was shot. While escaping, the assailants also gunned down a police officer, Corporal Francis Friday, who was on special duty at the Secretariat with the Special Intervention Squad (SIS)”, the statement said.

    It said the police patrol teams led by the Divisional Police Officer arrived at the scene, but the attackers had already fled.

    Both victims of the attack were rushed to the Ahoada General Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds but were pronounced dead on arrival, and their bodies were deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

    The Commissioner of Police, (CP) Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene and deployed tactical teams to the area.

    The police boss directed the Area Commander and DPO to intensify efforts to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

    He vowed that the killers of the police officer and the OSPAC operative would not escape justice and urged residents to remain calm and cooperative by reporting any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.

    Gunmen abduct passengers of a commercial vehicle in Abia

    Yet-to-be identified gunmen have reportedly abducted some passengers and the driver of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

    Information about the kidnap is still sketchy at the time of the report, our correspondent, however, gathered that the passengers, were abducted along the Isuikwuato axis of the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Isuikwuato-Ohafia Expressway.

    The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, Danladi Isa and the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka were yet to respond to messages sent to them.

    However, a source from the area said that they were told that the gunmen had mounted a block which forced the driver of the vehicle who thought that they were security personnel to slow down.

    It was learnt that the hoodlums took advantage of the situation to order the passengers and the driver out of the car and marched them into the nearby bush.

    “We got the information from the people that some people were being marched into the bush by some people welding guns and other dangerous weapons.

    “By the time our people contacted the army at 143 Battalion and mobilise them to the scene, the people have gone.

    “This is not the first time this kind of incidence is happening. We want government to direct security agencies to come to the aid of road users.”

    It was gathered that rescue operation has since commenced as security agencies have launched manhunt on the said kidnappers with the aim to mount pressure on them and eventual release of the captors.

    Recall that the Commissioner of Lands in the state, Chaka Chukwumereije was attacked few days ago on the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway while he was heading to Umuahia, the state capital from the Enugu-Umuahia axis of the ever-busy highway by gunmen.

    Some of the residents of the state Mr. Solomon Ofuiche and Mrs. Loveth Chionye who said that they were indigenes of Abia North said that their people now live in fear following the recent increasing security threat on the lives of citizens who use that stretch of road on daily basis.

    Gunmen kill Anambra’s security outfit operative, burn five vehicles, post

    Gunmen have killed one of the Agunechemba security operatives in Anambra State. 

    The hoodlums also razed five operational vehicles of the outfit and the security post

    During the gun duel between the hoodlums and the security operatives, another member of the state security outfit was injured.

    The incident happened at the security post of the Agunechemba outfit in Umunze, Orumba South local government area on Thursday evening

    Sources in the area told The Nation when the hoodlums stormed the area, they overpowered the security outfit, who, according to them, fought them like wounded lions too.

    However, when the battle became too difficult for them, they took their heels through the bush.

    Anambra police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga ,a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident. 

    He said the Joint Security Forces had launched serious hunt for the fleeing attackers, while the entire area has been invaded by other security operatives

    He said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the attack and emphasised the need for community support to bring the perpetrators to justice.

    Gunmen numbering about 70 on Wednesday this week killed two police officers in Kwara State.

    The unidentified assailants also abducted one Chinese and one other at a mining site in Oreke-Okeigbo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

    The deceased police officers are ASP Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah.

    The abductees, it gathered are Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese, and David Adenaiye, an indigene of Kogi state.

    The duo were said to be working at the mining site at the time of the incident.

    The incident happened around 6:30pm on the ill-fated day.

    “Spokesperson of the state police command Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the incident.

    “Ejire-Adetoun said: “Information received from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Oreke indicated that a group of unidentified armed assailants invaded the said mining facility, where they tragically shot and killed two operatives of the Nigeria Police Force—ASP Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah, both attached to 45 PMF, Abuja, who were on official protective assignment at the location.

    “The attackers also carted away the rifles of the deceased officers.

    Suspected gunmen have reportedly killed a yet- to-be identified middle aged man in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

    The Nation gathered the incident occured in front of Shopping Complex in Moniya in the Akinyele Local Government Area on Tuesday.

    The victim, according to multiple sources, was shot on the head at close range with blood stain on the floor.

    The attackers were said to be riding on a motorcycle when one of them suddenly alighted, moved closer and shot him at the bus-stop.

    The incident threw the entire area into confusion as residents and traders quickly shut the doors while passers-by ran for dear lives.

    Sources said his corpse have been evacuated by a combined security operatives.

    A resident of the area, who simply gave her name as Iya Rashidat, said: “I was still in the shop when I suddenly heard gunshot. I quickly rushed out with my baby to confirm the incident.

    “As I was about to verify the incident, I saw people running up and down, so I quickly left the shop without locking it. I went far away to study the situation. So, after a while, I saw a Police Hilux vehicle who came around to evacuate his lifeless body because he died immediately.”

    Another eyewitness, who did not want his name in print, said: “I got to that area when security operatives were evacuating his corpse. 

    “Though, I don’t know if it’s true or not, some people said he was traced to that bus-stop while some said he was shot dead shortly after alighting from a commercial vehicle popularly known as Micra.”

    Suspected gunmen murder man, abduct wife in Imo community

    A Nigerian man based in the United States has been brutally murdered by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Imo State, while his wife was abducted during the same attack.

    The tragic incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday along the Irete–Umuguma Road, near Golden Estate and Abba Father Avenue in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area.

    The victim, originally from Ihiala in Anambra State, had travelled to the area with his wife to finalise a land purchase.

    They were accompanied by two local land agents in a Toyota Highlander SUV for a scheduled site inspection when the assailants struck.

    According to a family source, the couple and their companions were ambushed by armed men believed to be herdsmen.

    The deceased initially escaped but returned in a brave attempt to rescue his abducted wife. Unfortunately, he was overpowered and shot in the head at close range.

    The attackers fled into a nearby forest with the woman, leaving the SUV and several injured victims behind. The land agents reportedly sustained injuries while trying to flee the scene.

    Security operatives were alerted by witnesses and arrived shortly after to recover the man’s lifeless body.

    The incident has triggered fear and tension across Umuguma and surrounding communities, including Irete, Nekede, Avu, Amakohia-Ubi, Okuku, and Ndegwu—all of which have seen a rise in attacks by suspected armed herders in recent months.

    Reacting to the incident, Secretary of the Owerri West Local Government Area, Dr. Fidel Onyeneke, expressed deep sorrow over the killing and called for urgent security interventions.

    “I want to say with mincing words that I’m worried about the state of insecurity in different parts of the country, and particularly in Imo State and in the situation where people come back to their country home and they are no longer secure. It is highly regrettable.

    “I am aware of the incident in reference where somebody went to see land and in the process he and his wife were kidnapped, and it led to the death of the person who returned from abroad.

    “Be that as it may, I want the federal government to mount pressure on the state governments to use various measures and methods, both kinetic and non-kinetic measures, to fight insecurity in our various rural areas.”

    He called for the formation of forest guards who will work with conventional security agencies to fish out these common criminals who have occupied various bushes and forests.

    The police spokesperson in Imo State, DSP Henry Okoye, who confirmed the incident, said that the command has launched an investigation into the ugly murder.

    He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the deployment of tactical teams, with the Area Commander for Owerri Urban assigned to lead a manhunt through the dense forests of Owerri West.

    “The Command is fully aware of this unfortunate incident and has commenced a vigorous operation to apprehend the culprits and ensure justice is served,” Okoye said.

    The victims were reportedly abducted on Monday evening while returning from bible study 

    A message from one of their members reads, “Good morning beloved, Kindly pray along with us , three of our members were kidnapped yesterday after bible study at Kasemola inside Ogbese axis. We need divine Intervention.”

    Gunmen kill couple, two children in Anambra 

    Gunmen on Thursday murdered a family of four, comprising husband, wife and two of their children in Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    The victims have been identified as the family of Ichie Kennedy Igboanugo from Ekwuru Isseke (Ichie Akuruoulo 1 of Isseke).

    According to eyewitnesses, the killers invaded the family’s apartment while they were sleeping, killing them in cold blood and leaving their lifeless bodies on the floor of their rooms.

    The reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.

    A police source while confirming the incident, said the bodies of the deceased have been recovered and deposited at the morgue.

    The source added that a joint security team has been deployed to the area to prevent any further incidents.

    “Preliminary information suggests the gunmen attacked the family unprovoked.

    “The bodies of the victims have been recovered and deposited at the morgue, and investigations are ongoing.

    “The command has expressed condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims and is working to apprehend the perpetrators.

    “The area has been reinforced by the joint security team, and further developments will be communicated as the investigations unfold,” the source revealed.
