    Gunmen on rampage, kill 10, injure many in Plateau, Anambra attacks

    No fewer than eight persons have been killed, and others wounded at Wereng  Camp community of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State by gunmen.

    The gunmen stormed the community late Wednesday night and shot sporadically.

    Sources said most of those killed were children and aged persons.

    A source in the Plateau community described the attacks as unprovoked, lamenting that several food items were carted away by the gunmen.

    Efforts to reach security operatives for confirmation was abortive

    Recall that several communities had been attacked by armed men in  Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos  and Riyom local government areas of the state in the past few months.

    Worried about this sad development,Governor Caleb Mutfwang had called on the Federal Government to intervene.

    In Anambra State, two persons were killed by suspected gunmen.

    A victim was in a red saloon car, while the second victim was trying to escape when they were killed.

    The incident happened at 10.45am between Agulu and Nanka boundary  in Anaocha Local Government Area.

    When the state Police spokesman in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, was called for confirmation, he did not pick his phone, but a senior Police officer confirmed the incident.

    Two persons were reportedly killed by suspected gunmen on Thursday morning along the Agulu-Nanka boundary in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    The attack, which occurred around 10:45 a.m., has sparked tension between the two neighbouring communities.

    Eyewitnesses said the assailants fled the scene on a motorcycle after carrying out the deadly act. 

    The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

    A resident who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity claimed that the victims were members of local security outfits allegedly set up by Governor Chukwuma Soludo for electoral purposes.

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond to calls. However, a senior police officer confirmed the incident.

    “Our new Commissioner of Police is a trained combatant and has already deployed men to go after the perpetrators,” the officer said. “We don’t have full details yet, but the command will issue a statement soon. The situation is under control and we are on the trail of the assailants.”

    According to reports, one of the victims was shot inside a red saloon car, while the other was killed as he tried to flee the scene.

    Gunmen kill UBTH physiotherapist as truck crushes two vigilantes 

    There was  pandemonium at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)  as gunmen stormed the hospital to kill a physiotherapist simply identified as Alex in a suspected cult related attack.

    Sources said the gunmen shot the health personnel while on duty within the department of physiotherapy of the  hospital on Friday.

    According to one of the sources, the attack threw patients and staff into panic as they scampered for safety.

    In response, distraught health workers staged a protest within the hospital premises, wielding placards to decry the growing insecurity that has now spilled into health institutions.

    UBTH Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the incident, noting that the hospital had alerted security agencies and was awaiting investigation results.

    “A physiotherapist with UBTH was shot dead on Friday. The matter has been reported to the security agencies,” he said.

    Meanwhile, a separate tragedy occurred on Tuesday when an articulated truck crushed two vigilante members to death along the busy Ugbowo-Lagos Road, directly in front of the University of Benin main gate.

    Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were riding on  a motorbike when the truck ran over them at about 12 noon, killing them instantly.

    The heads of the victims were reportedly crushed beyond recognition.

    “The two vigilantes died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited in a mortuary,” the eyewitness said.

    All efforts to get the confirmation of the spokesperson of the police command in Edo, CSP Moses Yamu, proved abortive as he neither picked his call nor replied to text messages. (NAN)

    Gunmen abduct 20 passengers in two commercial vehicles

    • Catholic priest kidnapped in Kaduna

    Gunmen yesterday abducted 20 passengers who were travelling in two commercial vehicles on the Adoka-Naka-Makurdi Road, Benue State.

    An eyewitness said the vehicles were loaded in Ankpa Motor Kark and were heading to Makurdi, through Adoka, when the incident happened.

    The incident occurred at Jor Settlement in Gwer West Local Government Area.

    According to two of the released victims, an aged man and a woman with the little baby, believed to be natives of Igala, in  Kogi State, the gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons ambushed their vehicles, a Hummer Bus and  Volkswagen Salon, and ordered the passengers into the bush.

    But, on the way, the gunmen released the little baby girl, an old man and woman because they were not  moving fast due to their age.

    At press time, the traumatised old man and women with the little baby girl were still stranded in Naka town, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government.

    The police in Gwer West said an investigation had started.

    Also, bandits yesterday abducted a Catholic priest, Revd Father Ibrahim Amos, in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

    The priest was kidnapped yesterday from his residence at Saint Gerald’s Qausi Parish,  Kurmin Risga community in Kauru Local Government Area.

    The police authorities in Kaduna are yet to confirm the incident, but the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of  Kafanchan, Revd Father Jacob Shanet, confirmed the abduction of his colleague in a statement yesterday.

    He described the kidnap of yet another priest in the diocese as saddening.

    Shanet, however, called for prayers for the safe return of the abducted priest, just as he urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

    He further said the  every legitimate and available means will be deployed to ensure that the abducted priest returns unharmed and in good health.

    The latest abduction comes less than two months after another Catholic priest from Kafanchan Catholic Diocese, Reverend Father Slyvester Okechukwu, was abducted and later killed by his abductors in Kaura local government area.

    The Chief Executive Officer of Klass Five Hotel, Adesoji Johnson Adeleye, has been assassinated.

    Adeleye was killed in the early hours of Tuesday at his residence in the Arakale area of Akure, the Ondo State capital.

    A close friend of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that they were together on Monday night.

    According to him, Adeleye was brutally stabbed multiple times by his attackers.

    Ondo police spokesman, Alexander Olayinka, who confirmed the killing, said the case has been ordered transferred to state police headquarters for discreet investigation.

    Gunmen kill three fisher traders in Benue community

    Gunmen have slaughtered three fisher women in Tse ijim, near Anyiin, Ukember Agya, Gaambetiev, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. 

    The Nation gathered that the three Tiv women were returning from the market along the Anyiin-Wukari road on the side of Benue State land when they were ambushed and killed by suspected Jukun militia.

    An eyewitness, Teryila Abuur, told The Nation the women were waylaid and slaughtered by the gunmen on their way back.

    Logo Local Government Area in Benue State shares a boundary with Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State, an area plagued by skirmishes between Tiv and Jukun communities for over 30 years.

    The incident, which occurred around 4 pm on Monday, caused widespread panic along the farming communities in Gaambetiev, according to a community leader, Chief Iorbee Fate.

    They were concerns the incident may ignite another round of violence between Jukun and Tiv tribes that lived along the boundary communities in Wukari and Logo Local Government Areas.

    As of press time, the bodies of the three women were deposited at Anyiin Health Centre.

    The Police Area Command  said they were yet to receive a report on the incident.

    Gunmen kill two, abduct 12 passengers in Benue

    The Management of Benue Links Nigeria Limited has said that gunmen attacked the company’s bus, killed the driver, one passenger and abducted 12 others.

    The company’s Information Officer,
    Mr Johnson Ehi, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Makurdi on Friday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the company is owned by the Benue State Government.

    The statement explained that the bus, with Registration Number PP512, was travelling from Makurdi to Otukpo, when the incident happened.

    According to Ehi, the incident occurred on Thursday, near Otukpo Burnt Bricks.

    The management condemned the fatal attack in very strong terms.

    It stated: “Regrettably, the driver of the 18-seater bus, Mr Samuel Agege, and a front-seat passenger were fatally shot by the attackers.

    “While the gunmen attempted to abduct the remaining passengers, three individuals managed to escape, and another passenger had disembarked earlier at Taraku Town before the incident.”

    “The management extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and stands in solidarity with those whose loved ones remain in captivity.

    “We assure the general public that we are in constant communication with security agencies, who are making concerted efforts to rescue the abducted passengers.

    “We appreciate the swift response of the law enforcement agencies and express confidence in their ongoing efforts to rescue the victims.”

    When contacted, the Benue Police Command confirmed the incident.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, said “the incident was reported but details would be made available later”.

    BREAKING: Gunmen abduct Ebonyi female govt official 

    Mrs. Blessing Adagba, Coordinator of the Ngbo Central Development Centre in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was abducted by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Thursday.

    The incident, which occurred around midnight in the Okposhi Eheku community, has sent shockwaves through the local population.

    Eyewitnesses said the assailants, disguised as soldiers, stormed her residence and demanded she open the door.

    It was gathered that when she refused, questioning their identity, the men brandished firearms, overpowered her, and whisked her away to an unknown destination.

    The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the abduction through its spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, who stated that the Anti-Kidnapping Squad is actively working to ensure her safe and immediate release.

    Local leaders and stakeholders in Ohaukwu have begun mobilizing efforts to assist in the rescue operation.

    Community leaders expressed deep concern over the rising spate of such criminal acts, urging security agencies to intensify their efforts and calling for enhanced protection for residents.

    The incident has heightened fears in the area and sparked renewed calls for vigilance and stronger collaboration between law enforcement and the community.

    Gunmen kill Miyetti Allah chairman in Plateau

    Unknown gunmen yesterday killed the Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

    The Chairman of the group, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, said the deceased was attacked in his residence in Barkin Ladi town, after breaking his fast.

    He called on the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators.

    A youth leader in the community, Alhaji Danjuma Ibrahim, said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Barkin Ladi General Hospital and was expected to be buried yesterday.

    Danjuma recalled that this was the third time the chairman had been targeted by gunmen.

    He said: “The gunmen attacked him and shot him severely in the body.

    There are bullet wounds on the body. After they shot him, they fled the area. Security personnel, including police and soldiers, have responded because we were with them at the hospital when he was rushed to the hospital.”

    The youth leader, however, described the attack on the chairman as sad. “He played a vital role in ensuring peace within Barkin Ladi. His demise will continue to linger in our memory because of his significance to sustaining peace in the community,“ he added.

    Gunmen on Wednesday killed the Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Muhammad Adamu. 

    Plateau chairman of the group, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, who confirmed the incident, said the deceased was attacked in his residence in Barkin Ladi town, immediately after breaking his fast. 

    He condemned the incident and called on the security agencies to launch a thorough investigation to the  killing and arrest the perpetrators of the crime. 

    A youth leader in the community, Alhaji Danjuma Ibrahim, who also confirmed the incident, said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Barkin Ladi General Hospital and expected to be buried on Thursday.

    Danjuma, while condemning the incident, recalled that this was the third time the chairman had been targeted by gunmen, but they were unsuccessful until the latest attack. 

    He said: “The gunmen attacked him and shot him severely in the body.

    Plateau Police spokesperson DSP Alabo Alfred, has not responded  to calls by The Nation  on the incident.
