    Asiwaju Tinubu hails Adebanwi 

    All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has congratulated Nigerian scholar, Prof. Wale Adebanwi, over his appointment as Rhodes Professor in Race Relations at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

    He said with his appointment to the prestigious professorial chair, Adebanwi had made Nigeria and Africa proud.

    Asiwaju Tinubu, who disclosed that the scholar had related closely with him, said he remains proud of Adebanwi and his academic achievements.

    In a statement released at the weekend by his Media Office, the former Lagos governor said: “I congratulate you on your appointment to the prestigious Rhodes Professorship in Race Relations at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

    “You represent a new generation of Nigerian intellectuals who have refused to be slowed down by any obstacle. But are bold, courageous and with a knack for intellectual curiosity.

    “Your love for Nigeria is never in doubt and each time we speak during your visit to Nigeria, our conversations and atimes arguments center around how Nigeria can attain true greatness.

    “You have set a high standard and record as the first black African academic to be appointed to that prestigious chair since its creation.

    “Adebanwi, you have always distinguished yourself as a scholar of note. As someone who has related closely with me, you have made me proud. You have made Nigeria proud. You have put Africa on the map of honour and pride.

    “Thank you Adebanwi”.

    TMC hails Turkey’s anti-Daesh fight

    A foremost Islamic organisation, The Muslim Congress (TMC) yesterday lauded the onslaught against Daesh by Turkey, Russia and Iraq, saying the struggle must continue until the terrorist group is defeated

    TMC Amir (National President) Dr Luqman AbdurRaheem, who made this remark during Muharram Get-Together, held at Onikan Stadium, Lagos said reiterated the need for a more global effort to end the evil group.

    “They have existed for too long and caused so much harm and damage in many countries,” AbdurRaheem said while delivering his opening remark.

    The event tagged The Muslim World and the challenges of leadership, with a sub-theme was People-oriented governance and collective consciousness: Lessons from Turkey.

    He commended the people of Turkey for backing the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to foil the July 15 coup bid.

    “We call for the cessation of hostilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. The world should realise that these needless wars have gone on for far too long with the attendant consequences of maiming and loss of thousands of lives, destruction of properties and the pollution of the environment.

    The United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League and the African Union should come together to mitigate and find lasting solutions to these problems,” AbdurRaheem said.

    A professor of Arabic and Islamic studies in the University of Ibadan, AbdulHafeez Oladosu said: “The Turkish coup failed because it lacks the support of Allah and the people of Turkey. It sought to manipulate the current realities of the people of Turkey. Turkish people are content with their current leadership and that reflected in the people’s reaction”

    Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Hakan Çakil, who was represented by Counsellor for Religious Affairs at the Turkish Embassy, Mr Ali Kasikirik, said the Turkish defended Erdogan-led government by turning out to the streets despite the gun fires.

    The people, Kasikirik said, resisted machine guns to defend democracy.

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has praised public and civil servants for the uncommon maturity and understanding that they have displayed in the face of the current economic challenges confronting the nation.

    The governor spoke while addressing workers who came out in their large numbers to celebrate 2016 Workers Day.

    Amosun promised that his administration would continue to strive to put  smiles on their faces.

    The governor added that this was evident in the fact that Ogun State has not only paid April 2016 salary but also paid part of the deductions it was owing.

    He added: “We recognise the prominent role you play as the engine room, the driving force behind the implementation of our lofty ideas and goals for the development of our dear state.”

    Glo hails Dream Team’s qualification

    National teams’ sponsor, Globacom has commended the Dream Team VI for recording an all-important semi-final victory against host Senegal in the on-going 2015 U-23 African Cup of Nations match played in Dakar.

    In a press statement released in Lagos immediately after the match on Wednesday, Globacom commended  the Dream Team VI for winning the match and qualifying for the football event of 2016 Olympics in, Rio, Brazil.

    The hard-fighting Senegalese team had put up a strong resistance in the first forty five minutes which ended goalless.

    However, the ‘Dream team’, with pep talk from the Samson Siasia led coaching crew, went into the second half with strong determination which resulted in a goal through a well taken penalty by Oghenekaro Etebo in the 78th minute.

    With this victory, the Golden Eaglets became the first team in Africa to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, while South Africa will lock horns with Algeria for the second ticket. The winner of the third place match will pick the third and the last ticket.

    “We Congratulate the Golden Eaglets for qualifying for the Olympics and urge them to remain focused on the task ahead. We believe that victory is achievable in Rio and we stand by you as ever, believing fervently that you will do Nigeria proud at the Olympics,” the statement concluded.

    Globacom is the major partner of the Nigeria Football Federation and official sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.

    Bayelsa APC hails Tinubu, Osinbajo, others

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Brass Constituency II, Bayelsa State, has thanked the party’s national leadership, especially the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal, for supporting the people in their effort to free themselves from “PDP-imposed poverty”.

    They hailed the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the APC Governorship Election Campaign Council, Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, as well as other members of the council for their dedication.

    In a statement yesterday, following the successful grand finale of the APC governorship campaign in Bayelsa State, the constituency’s leaders, Abaye Ayebatonyo and Fayenengigha Jacob, said: “The massive nationwide support shows that the country values Bayelsa State people.”

    Ministerial slot: Ajimobi hails Buhari, pledges support for Shittu

    Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing a substantive minister for the state in the newly-constituted cabinet.

    He assured the appointed Minister of Communication, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, of the support of the people of the state.

    Speaking during a courtesy visit to his office by the minister, Ajimobi  said: “We are indeed very grateful to Mr. President for giving us (Oyo State) the portfolio of a substantial minister after several years that we had been having junior ministers.

    “Now that we have a substantive minister in a strategic ministry, it is our belief that our state will benefit immensely from it. I pledge to give you all necessary support  as a worthy ambassador of Oyo State.”

    Governor Ajimobi stressed that the minister should not be seen as representing Oke-Ogun zone of the state, where he hails from in the federal cabinet but all other zones that make up the entire state.

    The governor said he was impressed by the courage and carriage exhibited by the minister during his screening by the Senate, stressing that he was able to respond to the various questions raised by the senators to the best of his ability.

    Besides, he said that he was equally happy with the disposition espoused by Shittu since his appointment, saying that this had put paid to the antics of the people bent on playing politics with his appointment to cause disaffection between them.

    Speaking earlier, Shittu expressed happiness that he was coming home as the representative of the state in the Federal Executive Council.

    The minister thanked the governor for his support, disclosing that he had had a longstanding relationship with the governor that predated his current status as the number one citizen of the state.

    Shittu said, “I am not unaware that Oyo State needs effective representation at the federal level. I want to assure you that I will serve as your eyes and ears. Whatever this state deserves from the Federal Government, we will get it.

    “I promise not to let you down. I promise not let Oyo State down. I promise to always get in touch with you for advice. I will be a good ambassador of this state.’’

    The minister also said that he would do everything possible to reposition the ministry and make it the nation’s cash cow.

    Premier League title: Akpeyi hails Enyimba

    Nigeria international, Daniel Akpeyi who left Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Warri Wolves for South African club, Chippa United has congratulated NPFL 2014/2015 champions, Enyimba Int’l.

    The ex-Heartland goalkeeper went ahead to charge the People’s Elephant  to take their blistering domestic form to the continent in the CAF Champions League next season.

    “First, I hope they will take the same fight to lift the NPFL trophy to the continental tournament when it kicks off because that’s when the effort they put in the league will  make some real sense,”Akpeyi told SupportTheNPFL.com.

    The Chippa United goalkeeper, Akpeyi, who started his football career in 2004 at Gabros Int’l now known as FC Ifeanyi Ubah felt his former club, Warri Wolves gave a good fight and also gave the league organisers, League Management Company (LMC) thumbs up for improving the quality of the NPFL.

    “Well, not to take it away from them, both team (Enyimba and Warri Wolves) deserve to lift the trophy because they gave a good account of themselves from the beginning to the end but unfortunately a team has to be crowned and Enyimba Int’l showed they wanted it more. Congrats to them,”Akpeyi said.

    “Secondly, I think the LMC did so well by making the league 2014/2015 as transparent as possible. This season is better than the previous one,  the referees have stepped up and that has shown the number of away wins. Though I’m far away from home but I still follow the league very well,” Akpeyi concluded.

    Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, has hailed the Ebira for their loyalty to the party.

    He spoke on Tuesday when he campaigned at Okene, in Kogi Central Senatorial District. The election holds on November 21.

    Audu thanked the Ebira for their love and support.

    A statement issued yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital, by his media assistant, Suleiman Abdulmalik, said a huge crowd attended the rally.

    The statement said the crowd showed that Ebiraland loved Audu contrary to rival parties claims.

    Audu hailed the people for turning out en masse to receive him and Vice-President Yomi Osinbanjo.

    The candidate said the Ebira would not regret their support for him and his party.

    He pledged to give special attention to Kogi Central, if elected.

    Audu also promised to support power shift in 2019, after serving his term.

    He passed the night at the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alhaji Ado Ibrahim’s palace.

    Owner of Nigeria Professional Football League Outfit, Giwa FC of Jos, Ambassador Christopher Musa Giwa has praised the efforts of his boys after they secured a battling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi in a match-day 35 tie of the NPFL at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos on Wednesday.

    Ambassador Giwa who had a chat with allnigeriasoccer.com immediately after the game gave thanks to God Almighty for the victory as well as commending the resilience of his boys who never gave up regardless of the imminent defeat staring them in the face.

    He said with the performance of his team, he believes continental football would not be farfetched.

    He also thanked football loving fans who thronged the Stadium in their numbers to watch the game as he admits that the glory of Nigerian Football at league level is gradually coming back, promising the fans of better things ahead. He concluded that in the coming months and years, the World would come to see a better Giwa FC.

    Giwa FC came from behind twice to beat their border rivals Wikki 3-2 after a highly entertaining super-slam affair on Wednesday.

    Their next game is against Heartland FC in Owerri on November 1.

  • Buhari hails NNPC, Agip, Oando on agri programme

    President Muhammadu Buhari has praised the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC)  and its partners, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Oando, for the Green River Project (GRP) which has covered over 120 rural communities and empowered over 35,000 farmers. GRP is the firm’s agric intervention project.

    In an audio-visual message to an agricultural exhibition and Farmers’ Day, organised by NAOC, Buhari explained that the company’s GRP had become more important “now that oil has ceased to be the nation’s cash cow. We have no option, but to turn to agriculture. Diversification of our economy is no longer something to pay lip service to,” he said.

    He unfolded the government’s agricultural development programme aimed at attaining self-sufficiency in food production and yearly export of 10 million tonnes of grains and processed food by 2019  to farmers from Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers states during the celebration.

    The return of marketing corporations is to serve as the main platform of the government’s programme which is also expected to lead to the development of 740,000 market-oriented young agricultural producers from among unemployed youths.

    In the speech delivered on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Sonny Echono, the President said government’s strategies include: establishment of Youth Employment in Agriculture Programme (YEAP), which will benefit 20,000 school leavers and rural youth leaders in each state of the federation and develop 18,500 university graduates into young agribusiness entrepreneur called “nagropreneurs” and Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprises (AEHEs) – a private sector led mechanisation programme which will inject a total of 6,000 units of tractors and implements, 15,000 power tillers, 20,000 planting and postharvest equipment to mechanise an estimated four million hectares of land nationwide.

    The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Fulvio Rustico  described the GRP of NAOC as a means to re-enforce a healthy relationship and cooperation between his country and Nigeria.

    The Chairman of NAOC, Mr. Ciro Antonio Pagano with his Vice, Massimo Insulla in their respective remarks spoke on the impact of GRPin the four stakeholder  states.

    They also spoke about the potential of the Project becoming a pivot for the development of the agric sector in Nigeria as it will serve as a major platform for knowledge sharing among farmers, academia, public extension services and agro allied industry.
