  • Couple declared wanted over abduction of 4-year old

    A couple has been declared wanted by the Anambra State government following alleged abduction of a 4-year old girl in Umunya, Oyi local government area of the state.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, in a statement, said the suspect, one Elochukwu and wife, Chekwube, took the baby, Chisom Umekwe to unknown destination.

    He said the incident was reported to the police by the mother of the baby, Nneka Umekwe.

    “On the 23/08/2018 at about 1500hrs, one Nneka Umekwe of Ojobi village Umunya reported at Oyi division that on the 15/08/18 at about 1300hrs, one Elochukwu and Wife Chekwube, surname unknown of same address, took her daughter, Chisom Umekwe, to unknown destination and all efforts made to locate her proved abortive.

    “She is fair in complexion, about 3ft tall, speaks Igbo language fluently and without tribal mark.

    “She was also putting on white cloth and red slippers as at the time she was allegedly stolen.

    While enjoining members of the public to be on the look out for the suspects or victim, Mohammed urged them to report to the nearest Police Station for prompt response if seen.

  • Mayhem in Anambra as Madman kills herbalist over goat

    There was palpable tension in Oba Aguleri in Anambra East local government area, Anambra state following alleged gruesome murder of a native doctor by a man suspected to be mentally unstable in the area.

    The murder was said to have triggered protest leading to destruction of properties worth millions of naira while business activities were apparently shut down in the area.

    The Nation gathered that trouble ensued when the native doctor [name withheld] tied a goat bought for spiritual sacrifice to a tree and went into the market to pick other items, but could not find it soon after his return.

    A resident of the area, who preferred anonymity, said the native doctor enquired about the whereabouts of his sacrificial goat as soon he noticed its sudden disappearance.

    “He was informed that a wandering madman untied it and took it to his house few kilometers away.

    “They gave him direction on how to reach the lunatic’s house and he went straight to the place without fear of attack as he relied on the efficacy of his charm.

    “When he got there, he met the madman already making advance plans to slaughter the goat for a meal.

    “While he was still demanding to know the reason the madman took his goat, he quickly dashed into his room and came out with a machete.

    “The native doctor took to his heels on sighting the machete in the hand of the madman,” he said.

    The resident who said the mad man ran after the native doctor, however said the madman caught up with him and macheted him severally after he fell down.

    “The native doctor bled to death before help could reach him,” he added.

    The Nation further learnt that irate youths in the area immediately mobilized and headed for the madman’s house to avenge the killing of their kinsman.

    It was also gathered that the crisis would have degenerated to further communal crisis but for the prompt intervention of security operatives who arrived the scene following a distress call.

    When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident, saying the suspected murderer and three other suspects had been arrested, linking the rampage to the death of the native doctor.

    His words, “the man that killed the deceased had been arrested with three others making a total of four suspects “.

  • Kerosene explosion burns woman, razes eight rooms in Anambra

    A middle-aged woman on Monday night sustained severe burns all over her body following a kerosene explosion that engulfed her apartment in Awada-obosi, Anambra State.

    The explosion was said to have completely raised down eight rooms service quarters of the apartment, located at No. 7 Dike Ezeagu street Ugwuagba, including that of the woman.

    The Nation gathered that the victim, Mrs Gift Oroke, was preparing dinner at about 10pm, after pouring alleged adulterated kerosene in her stove, when the explosion occurred, leaving her with varying degrees of burns.

    Confirming the incident, the State PPRO, Haruna Mohammed, said the victim was taken to St. Martins hospital, Ugwuagba, Awada for medical attention.

    He said sample of the kerosene was obtained for analysis, adding that the case was being investigated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

    Mohammed adviced members of the public to always take necessary precautions when using kerosene and other combustible substances in order to prevent recurance of such ugly incidents.

    It would be recalled that similar incidents recently occurred in Nkwelle Ogidi and Amikwo in Awka, leading to the death of one Ada Okpoto (14), while one Devine Favour (13) sustained various degrees of burns respectively.

  • Man kills girlfriend in Anambra

    A 25-year old woman was allegedly shot dead by her boy friend, Chika Modili in Oranto village Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra state.

    The deceased, Uchenna Onyeama, was said have been shot dead inside the room of the suspect’s friend, identified as Nonso Nwabueze.

    The cause of dastardly act could not be ascertained as at press time.

    Confirming the incident, the Police public relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed, said the suspects escaped to unknown destination after committing the murder.

    “On the 29/7/2018 at about 1830hrs, One Uchenna Onyeama, female aged 25 of Orofia village, Abagana was shot and killed by one Chika Modili male of Oranto ukpo inside his friend’s room at oranto village ukpo.

    “Police detectives attached to Dunokofia division led by the DPO visited the scene of crime and discovered that the room occupied by one Nonso Nwabueze was locked and the suspects escaped to unknown destination.

    “Power of Ingress was used to gain entrance into the room and victim was rushed to Odumegwu Ojukwu university teaching hospital where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

    He said the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, while efforts are on to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

    “One single barrel gun and one expanded cartridge suspected to be used in perpetrating the dastardly act was also recovered inside the room,” he added.

    Similarly, a 34-year old man, James Nwogha, allegedly killed his 30-year old wife in Nkpor, Idemili North local government area of the state.

    The suspect, reportedly hit the deceased, Jennifer Nwogha with a mortar piston following a sharp disagreement that ensued between them.

    The Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, who also confirmed the incident, said the suspect has been arrested and detained.

    “On 31/7/2018 at about 0012hrs, one James Nwogha male aged 34 years of NO.2 Umudioka Street Nkpor used mortar piston and hit his wife one Jennifer Nwogha female aged 30 years of the same address on the head during altercation that ensued between them, as a result of which she died instantly.

    “Scene of crime was visited by police detectives attached to Ogidi division, corpse photographed and deposited at Iyienu Mortuary for autopsy after it was certified dead by a medical doctor.

    “The mortar piston used in perpetrating the crime was recovered and Case is under investigation after which suspect would be charged to Court for prosecution,” he said.

  • Dumped 6-months baby found in Anambra

    A 6-months old baby was reportedly found at Umukabia village, Neni, in Anaocha local government area of Anambra State.

    The victim, suspected to have been abandoned in the community by the mother, was said to have been discovered on Monday, at about 10.50pm.

    The Nation gathered that the victim,
    dark in complexion, was brought to Neni Police division by the Chairman, Vigilante group Neni branch, Mr Titus Ogudogwo.

    Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, SP Haruna Mohammed, said efforts were being made by the Command to trace the biological parents of the child in order to reunite her with the family.

    “On the 9/7/2018 at about 2250hrs, Chairman Vigilante group, Neni branch, one Mr Titus Ogudogwo brought to Neni division a baby girl of about Six months old reasonably suspected to have been abandoned at Umukabia village Neni,” he said.

    Mohammed however urged members of the public with useful information that could help trace the parent of the child to report at the Neni division.

  • Anambra Police arrest six-man robbery syndicate

    The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a six-man robbery syndicate at Oba in Idemili South local government area of the State.

    The Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State, Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed this in Awka, said the suspects were arrested on June 29, 2018, at about 4.30pm following intelligence report.

    He said suspects intercepted a trailer loaded with Dangote cement along Onitsha/Owerri road on June 9, 2018 at about 3.30am, carting the entire cements in the trailer.

    “At about 1630hrs, following intelligence report, Police operatives attached to the command special Anti-robbery squad (FSARS) arrested the following syndicate, Obinna Ibeh (24), Edwin Chibuzor (24), Orji Onyema (26) and Friday Nwankwo (23),” he said.

    Mohammed said further investigation led to the arrest of the two receivers of the stolen goods, namely Onuchukwu Chinedu (36) and Eze Levi (38).

    While revealing that some exhibits were recovered from the suspects, the PPRO assured that they would be charged to court for prosecution after investigation were concluded.

    Similarly, a 24-year old man was arrested by Police Patrol team while on routine patrol around 1.35am at Nodu village, Okpuno in Awka South local government area of the state.

    The Police spokesperson said the suspect, Chigozie Nwankwo James, was intercepted in a Tricycle popularly known as keke, with registration number Awka 820 QT.

    “Following a search on the tricycle, Two pump Action guns with breech Numbers HV 942110 and 9041  Makes Maverick and Master magnum respectively, were recovered,” he said.

    He said the suspect was assisting the Police with useful information that would lead to the arrest of his accomplices.

  • Woman murdered in Anambra

    A 30-year old woman was reportedly found dead opposite Saint Mary Catholic Church, Obieze village, Ifitedunu in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra State.

    The deceased, identified as Chinyere Okoli, was suspected to have been strangled to death by unidentified persons who abandoned her in the pool of her blood.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed (PPRO), confirmed the incident, saying the police was alerted by the brother to the deceased, Thankgod Okoli.

    He said the body of the deceased was almost decomposing with rag suspected to be used in committing the murder tied round her neck when the police arrived the scene.

    “Police detectives attached to Dunokofia division went to the scene, met the body of the deceased almost decomposing with rag tied round her neck suspected to be used in committing the murder,” he said.

    According to him, the corpse was later deposited at the Enugu Ukwu General Hospital mortuary for autopsy after it was certified dead by a medical doctor.

    Mohammed further disclosed that the case was under investigation, assuring that efforts were being intensified to apprehend fleeing suspects.

    INEC fixes Anambra Central senatorial district election for Jan 13, 2018

    The Independent National EIectoral Commission ( INEC ) has fixed Jan. 13, 2018 for the conduct of the rerun Anambra Central Senatorial District election.

    The seat became vacant following the nullification of the 2015 election for the position by an election tribunal.

    The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja  on Monday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct re-run election within 90 days of the judgment.

    Mr Haruna Mohammed, INEC National Commissioner and Member, Information and Voter Education Committee ( IVEC ),  made the development known in a statement on Friday.

    Mohammed the commission  met on Thursday and discussed the case of the outstanding election to fill the seat for the Anambra Central Senatorial District among other issues.

    “Following the determination of this case, lNEC has decided that all encumbrances to the conduct of the rerun election have now been removed.

    “There is presently no court order restraining lNEC from conducting the election.

    “The Commission has considered all the circumstances surrounding the election particularly the 90-day time-frame ordered by the Court of Appeal.

    “It also considered the demands for preparing adequately for the election as well as the coming Yuletide and decided that the rerun election shall take place on Saturday Jan. 13, 2018,” Mohammed said.

    The Commission commended all stakeholders, particularly the people of Anambra Central Senatorial District for their patience.

    “We hope that the delay has served to clarify some grey areas in our electoral process to make it stronger, freer, fairer and more credible,” Mohammed said.

  • Students seek truce between labour unions, Nasarawa govt. to end strike

    Students of tertiary institutions in Nasarawa State have called for truce between the state government and labour unions of the three higher institutions currently on strike.

    Some of the students told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Keffi on Wednesday that both sides must take step to end the strike in the interest of the students.

    NAN reports that the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions had embarked on an indefinite strike on April 5, demanding for promotion, payment of their annual increment and other entitlements.

    The institutions involved in the strike include the College of Education, Akwanga, College of Agriculture, Lafia and Nasarawa State, Polytechnic, Lafia.

    The students called for understanding between the state government and the union in resolving the industrial action, so that it would not have adverse effect on the education sector.

    Mr Thomas Bulus, a student of Computer Science at the state Polytechnic in Lafia, said the strike was a set back to education.

    “The ongoing higher institutions workers strike has affected our education negatively as academic activities had stopped in these institutions.

    “The strike is unfortunate. No student will be comfortable staying at home, That is why, I want to use this medium to appeal to the state government and the organised labour to dialogue in order to end the strike in our interest.”

    Another student, Sarah Ali of College of Education, Akwanga, also appealed to the government and union to dialogue so as to end the strike.

    She noted that the strike had not only crippled economic activities but also affected the education sector negatively.

    “No nation could achieve speedy development without sound education; the strike has affected the state socio-economic development and our education negatively,” she said.

    Ali reminded the government and the union that the future of the state and the country at large lied on the proper education given to the youths.

    Mr Haruna Mohammed of College of Agriculture, Lafia said “we are still at home because of the strike and this is not fair.

    ‘‘Government should do something about it and the union should also have understanding with the government in order to end the strike,” he said.

  • Gunmen attack Bauchi secondary school quarters

    …Kill five-year-old

    Police in Bauchi State said suspected gunmen set ablaze some houses in the staff quarters of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Yana, killing a five-year old girl on Sunday.

    The state police spokesperson, DSP Haruna Mohammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Bauchi that the gunmen also burnt a telecommunication mast in the town.

    He said they stole a private car belonging to the principal of the school, assuring the public that other students in the school were safe.

    “Unknown gunmen attacked the staff quarters of GGSS Yana, Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State, around 2.30am on Sunday.

    “They set the school bus ablaze; and in the process, a five-year-old girl was killed in the fire while they destroyed the vault of a bank,’’ he said.

    According to Mohammed,  security forces are now on the trail of the attackers.
