  • Ritualists remove woman’s eyes

    A woman’s eyes were removed after gunmen attacked her on her way from a coronation ceremony in Lukshi village of Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    Police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said Zainab Mohammed was attacked and two of her eyes removed by three men inside a bush at Lukshi village while on her way home after attending a coronation at Gimbiyar Lukshi.

    He said police detectives attached to Dass Division visited the scene of the attack and rushed the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital for treatment.

    Haruna said investigation was on and efforts being made to arrest the fleeing suspects.

     

  • Gunmen abduct Bauchi State lawmaker

    Tension has risen again in Bauchi state as gunmen on Monday evening abducted Hon. Yusuf Nuhu, member of the Bauchi state House of Assembly representing Lama constituency. He was kidnapped at his residence in

    Zalau village in Toro Local government area of the State.

    According to source, the gunmen who stormed the house of the lawmaker at about 7.pm, on Monday abducted the lawmaker while he was praying in the mosque attached to his house.

    The source also said the gunmen have been trailing the movements of

    the lawmaker for some time with a view to execute their plans successfully.

    Confirming the incident, Bauchi state Police Public Relation Officer, Haruna Mohammed a Deputy Superintendent of Police informed that the Police in Toro local government council got the wind of the information and pursued the gunmen but could not catch up with them.

    Haruna said,”the police swung into action and pursued the kidnappers who abandoned their car, a green Golf 3 wagon at Rahama village, a border town between Toro Bauchi and Saminaka in Kaduna state.

    Police spokesman disclosed 8 live ammunitions of SMG Rifle, and other items. Meanwhile the Police and Vigilante Group have cordoned off the area so as to arrest the suspects just as Investigation has began.

    Activists slam law

    Five people have been arrested in Bauchi State for alleged sodomy. This is coming few days after the law banning same sex marriage.

    Bauchi State police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said: “The police are aware of the case, but the suspects were arrested by the Shariah Commission and taken to court.”

    Bauchi Shariah Commission Chairman Mustafa BabaIlelah could not be reached, but it was learnt that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.

    A senior Hisbah (Shariah police) official said the suspects were taken to the Upper Shariah Court 4 and remanded in custody. He said four of the five suspects pleaded guilty.

    The case was adjourned till January 23.

    Local and international groups fighting AIDS warned yesterday that the law criminalising same-sex marriage and gay organisations will jeopardise the fight against the disease.

    Human rights activists reported that dozens of gay men were arrested in the North.

    The United States and Britain have condemned the law. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that it “dangerously restricts freedom” of expression and association of Nigerians.

    Activist Dorothy Aken’Ova said the legislation, already dubbed the “Jail the Gays” law, will endanger and even criminalise programmes fighting HIV and AIDS.

    Aken’Ova is executive director of International Centre for Reproductive Health and Sexual Rights based in Minna.

    In Bauchi State, she said police arrested four gay men and tortured them into naming others. She said the police have drawn up a list of 168 wanted gay men, of whom 38 have been arrested.

    Speaking on the law, Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said: “This is a law that is in line with the people’s cultural and religious inclination. “So it is a law that is a reflection of the beliefs and orientation of the Nigerian people. Nigerians are pleased with it.”

    Robbery suspect killed in Bauchi

    THE police in Bauchi State have killed a robbery suspect and arrested four others, the spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, told reporters yesterday.

    He said the police recovered arms in Toro and Ganjuwa local governments.

    Mohammed said the command smashed a notorious robbery syndicate, which has been terrorising travellers.

    The police spokesman said four other suspects were giving information, leading to the arrest of more suspects.

    Weapons recovered included two fabricated scorpion rifles, two fully loaded locally-made pistols.

    The suspects have confessed that they killed a traditional title holder, Maidawa Habli , in a suburb of Bauchi.

    The suspects also confessed that they were behind the threats to villagers whom they asked to deposit money.

    Haruna said the command recovered over 105 stolen cows, sheep as well as goats, and called on residents, who lost their domestic animals, to contact the Township Police Division.
