  • Man in court for allegedly threatening police officer

    The Police on Friday arraigned a 51-year-old man, Nasiru Abdullahi, in a Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly threatening a police officer on duty.

    The defendant, who resides at Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was arraigned on a two-count charge, bordering on intentional insult and threat to public servant, offences he denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Edwin Ochayi, said that the defendant committed the offences on April 16.

    “The defendant was invited for interrogation by the Area Commander, Karu, Abuja, FCT Command, through O/C Surveillance, Asp. Daniel Kwaji for threatening the life of one Mr Gabriel Amu.

    “Instead of honouring the invitation, the defendant intentionally insulted, threatened and warned the officer never to come to his house again.

    “The defendant also added that the officer should have himself to blame should anything happen to him if he dares step foot into his house again,” Ochayi said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 155 and 153 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Hassan Ishaq, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000, with one surety each in like sum, and adjourned the case until June 11 for hearing.

    The Police on Thursday arraigned two pregnant women, Mimi Abbas, 21 and Sofia Sulaiman, 25, in a Karu Grade I Area Court in Abuja for stealing four plasma Tv sets.

    Abbas and Sulaiman who reside at Masaka, Nasarawa State, were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on joint-act and theft, offence they denied committing.

    The Prosecutor, Edwin Ochayi, told the court that one Mrs Favour Eyo of Millipat Lodge, Airport Road in Abuja reported the matter at the Wuye Police Station in Abuja on April 14, around 11.30a.m.

    He said that the complainant alleged that on April 13, the accused persons who were guests at the lodge, stole four plasma television, valued at N260, 000.

    “Though one of the televisions was recovered along Airport Road, but the suspects were traced and arrested on April 15 at Masaka and they confessed to have committed the crime,” Ochayi said.

    He added that it was the fifth time, Suleiman, the second accused was committing similar offence.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to and punishable under Sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Hassan Ishaq, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with one surety in like sum.

    Ishag also ordered that the sureties must write a letter of undertaking that the defendants would not commit further offence. He adjourned the case until May 16 for hearing.

    Court arraigns six suspects using graveyard as hideout

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Monday granted N 10, 000 bail to six men who were accused of using a cemetery in Karu as a criminal hideout.

    The defendants are Sadiq Umar, Nafiu Maladi, Sani Aliyu, Danjuma Manga, Bello Idi and Sanusi Abdullahi.

    They were all charged with the offence of public nuisance, which the police said contravenes section 198 of the penal code.

    The Presiding Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, admitted the defendants to bail. Each of the accused would provide a surety in like sum.

    He added that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and submit their drivers’ licence or National Identity cards and passport photographs with the Court.

    The police prosecutor, Mrs. Ashasim Helen, told the Court that members of the public had repeatedly reported the criminal activities of the defendants at the Muslim Cemetery in Karu.

    She said on Sept. 9, a team of Police officers from Karu Police station led by CSP Patrick Akwarandu raided the graveyard and arrested the defendants.

    She stated that during police investigation, the defendants confessed to using the cemetery as a hideout for perpetrating evil such as theft, hand bag snatching, extortion etc.

    She added that they committed the evil acts in the night and weapons such as cutlasses and knives were recovered by the police from the black spot.

    After listening to the charge, the defendants pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned until Dec. 20 for hearing.

    Court jails shop breaker 10 months

    A man, Peter Ndule, is to spend the next 10 months behind the bars for breaking into a shop through the ceiling and stealing a laptop and other items worth N85, 000, a Karu Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja ruled on Thursday.

    Ndule of Ndule of Agwan Tiv, Karu, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of breaking into a shop and stealing.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, who handed down the verdict, however, gave the convict an option of N23, 000 fine.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Helen Ashsim told the court that the complainant, Ekwo Peter of Agwan Tiv, Karu, reported the incident on Sept. 3 at Karu Police Station.

    She said Ndule the broke into the complainant’s shop through the ceiling and stole items worth N85, 000.

    “He stole a Del scrap laptop, three microphones, one airtime receiver, two car stereos and one Saxophone, all valued at N85, 000.

    The offences contravened Sections 79, 287, 327, 353 and 358 of the Penal Code.

    Businessman to spend six months imprisonment for breach of trust

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 35 year-old man, Friday Maigida, to six months imprisonment for failing to supply timber worth N330, 000 to his client.

    Maigida was charged for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation punishable under sections 312, 329 and 309 of the Penal code.

    He pleaded guilty to the three charges and begged the court for mercy.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, however, gave the convict an option of N16, 000 fine and to repay the N330, 000 to the complainant.

    The prosecutor, Mr Adeyemi Adeyanju, had earlier informed the court that one Samuel Ogbatu of Kugbo Timber Shed Abuja reported the matter to Karu Police Station on July 8.

    Adeyanju said that the complainant had entrusted the money to Maigida in April to supply timber within two weeks of receiving the N300, 000, but failed to do so.

    The prosecutor added that, instead of meeting the agreement, the convict absconded and converted the money to his personal use.

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced Shefiu Samaila, 21, of Karu Village, Abuja, to four months in prison for stealing a mobile phone.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, sentenced Samaila but gave him an option to pay N10,000 fine and urged him to always be faithful, especially during this holy month of Ramadan.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismai’la, had told the court that Insp. Aliyu Shangbong of Nigeria Police arrested the defendant and took him to Maitama Police Station on June 12.

    He said the defendant was caught in the act while removing a mobile phone from the pocket of a man who had come for prayers at Annur Mosque, Wuse 2, Abuja.

    Ismai’la added that the defendant was caught on two occasions in the past stealing phones from the pockets of some persons who came to the Mosque to pray.

    He noted that the offence was punishable under Section 287 of the Penal code.

    The defendant had pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Man bolts with neighbour’s phones, gets N100, 000 bail

    A 31-year-old, Chukwuma Ajeh, who allegedly stole his neighbour’s phones in his car, was on Monday released on N100, 000 bail on the orders of a Karu Grade 1 Area Court in the FCT.

    Ajeh, who lives in Asokoro, Abuja, is facing a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating and theft.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused a reasonable surety in like sum, who must live within the court’s jurisdiction.

    Ishaq said the surety must submit his or her driver’s licence or international passport with the court.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Hellen Ashasim told the court Mr Henry Ikpeazu also of Asokoro, reported the incident at Karu Police Station on May 30.

    She said while the complainant was driving out of his apartment, the accused, who is his neighbour, pleaded that he would go with him to Kugbo Mechanic Village.

    She alleged that while they were on their way to the mechanic village, the accused asked the complainant to give him his phones to play games.

    “He gave him a Techno and Samsung phones and on getting to Kugbo, the complainant alighted from the car to carry out a business transaction.

    “When he returned, the accused had disappeared with the phones.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation.

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 16.

    Man jailed five months for threatening siblings

    A Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced one Stephen Lengshak, 30, to five months imprisonment for repeatedly threatening and intimidating his older siblings.

    The judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the offence of criminal intimidation levelled against him.
    The offence contravened the provisions of Section 397 (b) of the Penal code.

    Ishaq, however, gave Lengshak an option to pay N20,000 fine and write an undertaking that he would not fight, insult or send any threat text messages to anyone.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Vincent Osuji, informed the court that two older siblings of the convict, Emmanuel Dafang and Lydia Mutman, reported him at Karu Police Station on May 22.

    He explained that the complainants alleged that the convict on the same day, travelled from Jos to Abuja with only a cutlass in his bag.

    Osuji said that the siblings, who acted on a tip-off, alerted the police who arrested the convict with the weapon upon his arrival at the home of the second complainant.

    He alleged that the convict travelled to Abuja with the intention to kill the complainants, after sending a threat text message a day before to the first complainant.

    The text message reads, “You are my first target in life, I want to remind you that I will get you killed. I am coming for you.’’

    Osuji told the court that the convict was in the habit of extorting money from his siblings using intimidation and threats.

    The complainants, who were present in court, also recounted various near death experiences they had with him.

    They said the family had tried to no avail to rehabilitate, accommodate and give him good education as the last born of the family, but it yielded no result.

    The prosecutor had urged the court to convict him without an option of fine.

    However, Lengshak pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.

    “ I am sorry, I don’t know what came over me, and I want the court to plead with my older ones to please show me love and give me another chance,’’ he pleaded.
