  • Fashion designer arraigned for damaging clothes, granted bail

    A 26-year-old man, Mohammed Dieng, was on Friday arraigned in a Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly damaging a customer’s clothes worth N138,000, but was granted N150,000 bail.

    The defendant, a fashion designer at Banex Plaza, was docked on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating, which contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    He denied committing the offences.

    The judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, also ordered the defendant to produce a reliable surety in like sum and adjourned the matter until July 19 for hearing.

    Earlier the prosecutor, Mamud Ismail, told the court that one Mercy Ibeh of Garki, Abuja, reported the matter at the Maitama Police Station on May 15.

    He said that sometime in August, 2015, the complainant entrusted three pairs of clothes to the defendant to sew at the cost of N138,000.

    He alleged that the complainant paid the defendant N25, 000 as advance payment.

    Ismail added that when the complainant went to collect the clothes on the due date, she discovered that it was not the design she agreed and paid for.

    He said that the defendant had damaged the complainant’s clothes beyond repair.

     

  • Parking lot: Two men get N50,000 bail each

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja on Friday granted N50, 000 bail each to Prosper Okafor, 43, and Emiakumor Michael, 34, arraigned for allegedly fighting over parking space.

    Both defendants whom are Civil Servants were arraigned for the offence of joint act and inciting disturbance and disturbance of public peace contrary to Sections 79, 114 and 113 of the Penal code.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq admitted the defendants to bail with a reliable and reasonable surety each in like sum.
    He said the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and his address must be verified by the officer of the court.
    Ishaq added that the sureties must submit their driver’s licence or international passports with the court.
    He also ordered the defendants to write an undertaking with the court to maintain peace.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Bar. Vincent Osuji informed the court that the first defendant (Okafor) reported the case of criminal intimidation against the second defendant at the Karu Police Station on May 18.

    He said police investigations had revealed that the two defendants who are neighbours had both engaged themselves in a fight.
    Osuji told the court that it was discovered that the defendants were in the habit of fighting and insulting each other over parking space in their compound.

    “During police investigations, the neighbours of the defendants called the attention of the police to the constant insults and assault that they both engage in over where to park their cars in the car parking space in the compound,” Osuji said.

    According to the prosecutor, the constant fighting both defendants engage in has caused fear and apprehension for other neighbours.
    After listening to the charges, the defendants pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned till June 15 for hearing.

    Association’s treasurer in court over diversion of dues

    Braimah Precious, 37, the Treasurer, National Towing Vehicle Owners Association, Kugbo, FCT Branch, has been arraigned in a Karu Grade 1 Area Court , Abuja, for alleged diversion of the association’s N127, 000 dues.

    The defendant, who denied committing the offences, is standing trial on a two-count charge, bordering on criminal breach of trust and cheating, which contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal code.
    The judge, Hassan Ishaq, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N150, 000, with a reliable surety in like sum and adjourned the case till May 8.
    The prosecutor, Mahmud Ismail, had informed the court that one Abdulkarim Oseni, Chairman, National Towing Vehicle Owners Association, Kugbo, FCT Branch, reported the matter at Karu Police Station on April 3.
    He said that the complainant told the police that the defendant was entrusted with of N 127, 000, being monthly dues of members of the association between 2016 and 2017.
    Ismail told the court that it was agreed that the money should be paid into the association’s bank account.
    The prosecutor alleged that when asked to account for and refund the money, the defendant failed to do so.
    He said that during police investigation, the defendant confessed to have converted the said money to personal use.

     

  • Domestic violence: Couple granted bail

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Friday granted to one Ekenem Aniefiok , 44, and his wife Mercy John, 40.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the couple are standing trial for perpetrating domestic violence against each other.

    The two defendants, who are residents of Karu, FCT-Abuja, were charged with offences of joint act, disturbance of public peace and inciting public disturbance.

    The offenses, according to the prosecution, are in contravention of sections 79, 113 and 114 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, granted the bail N10,000 bail to each of the defendants.

    Ishaq also ordered that they produced reliable and reasonable sureties in like sum.

    He said the address of the sureties must be verified by the officer of the Court.

    The judge also directed that the sureties must submit their driver’s license or national identity card with the court registrar.

    He also ordered the couple to write an undertaking with the Court to maintain peace.

    The State Prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismail, had earlier told the Court that the defendants were arrested after Aniefiok reported his wife at the Karu Police Station.

    He said the two defendants were in the habit of fighting and disturbing public peace since the year 2014.

    “Several times, both of you have been reported to Karu Police Station by your neighbours because you engaged yourselves in fight and caused apprehension, fear and disturbances to other members of the public.

    “Since 2014, the Police station has received reports about your constant engagement in domestic fights against each other and you even have a pending matter with the Police where you engaged in a public fight,’’ he said.

    Ismail also told the court that the couple had been warned severally by the Police at the Karu Police station to desist from fighting, to no avail.

    However, after listening to the charges, the defendants pleaded not guilty.

    The court adjourned the matter till May 10 for continuation of hearing
