  • Hardball scores a hat trick!

The Mundial, the world’s largest and most exciting sporting fiesta, is on-going. The tempo is fever-pitched and it may be said that every man or woman for that matter who has any blood running in his veins is a partaker of this round leather carnival for the next one month, excitement, euphoria and shouts of joy will herald every goal scored in faraway Russia. If we listen carefully we might just catch the seismic reverberations around the globe when the world shouts gooooaaal in unison!

Now how did it come to be that Hardball scored a hat trick? No, the first question has to be how did it come to happen that Hardball was playing football?

Well, as the story streamed, Hardball found itself playing in a major tournament; whether it is in the on-going World Cup or UEFA Champions League final was difficult to ascertain. But that he was doing exploits in a big tournament was all that mattered.

It also streamed that commentators profiled him as being a graduate  of the world famous Aspire Academy. But not the massive one  in Doha, Qatar which has been a model for many countries to emulate. It turned out yet again that a Qatar Academy annex has been built in Kano by none other than the ancient city’s, nay, Nigeria’s most illustrious son, and money man, Aliko Dangote (May he find eternal favour from Allah).

And in no time, it has churned great footballing talents from Kano like Ahmed Musa. In fact, record shows that in a short time, there are already enough Ahmed Musa’s in Kano to set up four Super Eagles teams. Indeed, raw talents across Nigeria and the West Coast are said to be trooping to Aspire Academy, Kano.

It was in this sporting furnace that Hardball was said to have been wrought and now stands tall as a world class player. So there was Hardball playing in this tournament as an offensive mild-fielder (that must be the number 10 position).

Barely one minute of commencement of the match, springs-in-foot Hardball quickly displaced two defenders, immobilised another and felled yet one more as if he were a log of wood, before picking his spot at a corner of the goal post.

The second goal was not unrelated to the first having mesmerised the opponent’s defenders as if he were a snake charmer before tucking in the ball.

And here is the hat trick or so he thought: Hardball received a pass at the periphery of the opponent’s 18-yard box. One look, the goalkeeper was off his line and he arcs to release a firecracker of a shot when a defender throws his foot in the mix. A searing pain explodes in Hardball’s head.

    And Hardball wakes up.

He has smashed his toes against his bedpost!

  • A hat trick from D Tigress

•While politicians bicker at home, Nigerian national teams reap glory home and abroad

For the Nigerian female national basketball team, D Tigress, it is a hat trick of wins — to use that football lingo. It just clinched the 2017 edition of the FIBA (Federation of International Basketball Association) Afro-Basketball championship in Bamako, Mali. The team had earlier won the title, back-to-back, in 2003 and 2005, though the 2005 win was at home here in Nigeria.

To mark D Tigress’s emergence as a force in African female basketball, it won the 23rd FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, with a 65-48 defeat of defending champions, Senegal, who are the championship’s 11-time winners.

Not only that, the Nigerian team romped through the championship with eight wins out of eight, climaxing that with the repetition of the male national team, D Tigers’ triumph, in  2015. D Tigers are defending their title in this year’s edition, co-hosted by Tunisia and Senegal. If they win again, Nigeria would have been African Basketball champions,  in the male and female categories.

A few days later, the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s male national senior football team, posted their biggest victory ever over perennial foes and one-time nemesis, Cameroon, 4-0, at Nest of Champions Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

It was not just the emphatic victory. It was also the big occasion at which it was achieved: a FIFA World Cup African qualifiers, a platform where Cameroon always excelled and Nigeria always faltered.

Add that Cameroons are reigning African champions, with their customary mental toughness, and you will appreciate how well the Eagles have done. Even if the first-leg stomping was a fluke, the second leg in Yaounde, where the hosts could just manage a 1-1 draw, settled the argument on current form.

Besides, for the first time in Nigeria’s battle for qualification for the Mundial, the Eagles have their destiny firmly in their own hands. If Nigeria, at home, gets a win against Zambia in October, they would have wrapped up Russia 2018, with even a match to spare. The Eagles had earlier beat Zambia 2-1 away to kickstart the campaign.

D Tigress and the Eagles, two national teams of different sports and differing genders, speak to Nigeria’s seemingly eternal confusion and crisis at the political front.

Just when the home political turf is replete with separatist clamour, with a restructuring lobby thundering Armageddon, unless its wish to “restructure” the country came to pass, these national teams show excellence brings national pride, national pride breeds patriotism and patriotism breeds unity. It is a natural projection, with absolutely no mechanistic aids.

When Nigeria win on the field of sports, nobody realises — or even cares — where anyone comes from. But that is because the whole thing is merit-based, not some unearned privileges that build up bitterness all over the years. It is also achieved by hard work. When merit is sacrificed and laziness is rewarded, the ensuing bitterness flares in periodic tensions. That is the present ugly situation.

Which is why these teams’ victories could not have come at a better time. Nigeria might have issues on the political plane; a section of the country might accuse the other of criminal domination and indeed, some bitter citizens could, on the strength of their present travails, swear nothing good can come out of the present contraption, unless and until it is dismembered. Such passion! But that is not the total picture.

True, Nigeria is no El Dorado. It is a  country with its own challenges, many of them self-imposed, though. But when national teams triumph, you see a glimmer of what the country can do, the height of excellence it could attain and the sheer poetry of the skills of its youth, if only the conditions are right.

That is why the political establishment should keep on working on giving the country a proper direction. The same Nigerians deemed “useless” on the political plain, are the same Nigerians that get their acts right and shine so brilliantly in sports.

The moment Nigeria can translate such sporting excellence into politics and governance, then maybe it would be a new dawn. But nothing happens by happenstance.

The political elite must work toward such ethos. That is the only temper that can bail Nigeria out of its present morass, and put it on a course of steady and sustainable growth, peace, progress, development and prosperity.

    Okpotu humble after second hat-trick

Anthony Okpotu, Lobi Stars’ leading scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has told supersport.com that he is not targeting a specific goal tally despite scoring his second hat-trick for his club this term.

“I am happy with the hat-trick. I am also happy that I have scored two hat-tricks this season. This hat-trick helped my team win a very important game. Right now I am focused on helping my team win games. If the opportunity comes to score more goals I will do so. But I am not targeting anything.

“I am not looking at setting any target. I just want to play in matches and like I said if the goals come my way I will take them. The success of the team remains priority for us,” Okpotu told supersport.com.

Okpotu has shifted his attention to the Ilorin trip to face ABS FC on Sunday.

“The focus is now on the next match against ABS. The game against MFM FC is already played so we are not dwelling on that. Now the game against ABS is next,” said the Lobi man.

  • CL: Perfect hat-trick for Ronaldo, beat Bayern Munich 4-2

CL: Perfect hat-trick for Ronaldo, beat Bayern Munich 4-2

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a perfect hat-trick as holders Real Madrid needed extra time to beat 10-man Bayern Munich 4-2 and reach the Champions League semi finals for the seventh straight season.

The Portuguese star took his tally to 100 in the competition as Los Blancos prevailed 6-3 on aggregate at the Bernabeu after the Bavarians had threatened a stunning comeback.

A Ronaldo brace had given Zinedine Zidane’s men a 2-1 victory in the first leg, but they struggled to control a determined Bayern side, who drew level in the tie at 3-3 on aggregate when Sergio Ramos put through his own net 13 minutes from time. It came just moments after Ronaldo had cancelled out Robert Lewandowski‘s penalty opener on the night.

However, the big turning point came when Arturo Vidal was harshly sent off for a second bookable offence six minutes from the end of normal time.

Bayern defied the odds by continuing to attack in extra time, but Ronaldo struck twice from offside positions to kill the tie. Substitute Marco Asensio then rubbed salt in Bayern’s wounds with a solo fourth.

The result brings a successful conclusion to the first part of a big week for Real, who can take a giant stride towards the La Liga title when they host rivals, Barcelona on Sunday evening.

    TALKING POINT

Real are clear favourites for a 12th crown – but shocking decisions cost Bayern. With Bayern out and Barcelona needing another miracle at the Nou Camp to progress, it’s looking like Los Blancos will be the stand-out name in the last four draw on Friday. You have to go back as far as AC Milan in 1990 for the last time a side retained the trophy, but Real are now in a strong position to break the hoodoo as the first team to successfully defend the title. Bayern will feel aggrieved. At 3-3 on aggregate and with the visitors on top, Vidal’s sending off for what looked like a fair challenge was no doubt a key moment. They will also point to the fact Ronaldo was offside for his second and third of the night as Real got lucky with the officials.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid). On any other night it would have been Marcelo. But Ronaldo is a pure match winner. He hits new landmarks for fun and was the major difference in the tie overall.

    KEY MOMENTS

51′ – BAYERN MUNICH CHANCE! Marcelo saves Real with a brilliant header off the line to clear Robben’s dinked effort with Navas stranded.

53′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 0-1 BAYERN MUNICH. Lewandowski coolly sends Navas the wrong way from the spot after Casemiro was penalised for tripping Robben on the left side of the area. (It’s 2-2 on aggregate, but Real still lead on away goals scored).

76′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 1-1 BAYERN MUNICH. Real are level and it’s that man Ronaldo once again. It’s 3-2 on aggregate as he powers a header into the far corner from Casemiro’s probing cross.

78′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 1-2 BAYERN MUNICH. Ramos with an own goal! It’s 2-1 to Bayern and 3-3 on aggregate. It’s all square in this tie. The Spanish defender inadvertently prods it into the corner after Lewandowski had caused anxiety to set into the Real rearguard.

84′ – RED CARD! Vidal gets a second yellow for a foul on Asensio. It looks like he got the ball… harsh decision!

105′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 2-2 BAYERN MUNICH. Real are level once again and it’s that man Ronaldo. It’s 99 in the CL as he takes down Ramos’ cross and fires beyond Neuer. It’s now 4-3 to Real on aggregate.

109′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 3-2 BAYERN MUNICH. HAT-TRICK! Ronaldo makes it 3-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate. Marcelo breaks free and puts it on a plate for the Portuguese to tap home his 100th goal in the CL. It’s a perfect treble too.

112′ – GOAL! REAL MADRID 4-2 BAYERN MUNICH. It’s 4-2 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate. Asensio seals the tie with a mazy run and lovely right-foot finish beyond Neuer and into the far corner.

Friday hit the bulls’ eye after Ibrahim had netted a hat trick to the delight of the Uyo fans and the highest scorer of the 2015 Federation Cup competition opined that Ibrahim is a complete striker but that he needed the support of others in the team to complement his effort.

  • Villa 0-4 Man City Iheanacho scores hat-trick

Villa 0-4 Man City Iheanacho scores hat-trick

Nigerian international, Kelechi Iheanacho gave Manchester City fans an exciting glimpse into the future by scoring his first hat-trick as Manuel Pellegrini’s men cruised into the FA Cup fifth round and kept their hopes alive of an unprecedented Quadruple.

With Sergio Aguero given a rest, Iheanacho took centre-stage with his sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the campaign, against the Premier League’s bottom team.

He followed up a poacher’s finish after four minutes with a coolly-taken penalty midway through the first half and completed his treble following a howler by ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards. Raheem Sterling then added a late fourth.

City are still in the hunt for the Premier League, Champions League, Capital One Cup and the FA Cup. If Pep Guardiola does succeed Manuel Pellegrini, he will find him a hard act to follow, even if the kids are coming through led by Iheanacho.

  • Osadiaye’s hat trick helps Wolves tear Akwa United Apart

Osadiaye’s hat trick helps Wolves tear Akwa United Apart

Joseph Osadiaye hit a hat-trick in their delayed Glo Premier league Match Day 34 fixture against relegation troubled Akwa United on Monday at the Warri City stadium to launch his side to within three points of league leaders, Enyimba International.

npfl.ng reports that the lanky attacking midfielder was in sparkling form alongside Ikechukwu ‘Mosquito’ Ibenegbu who controlled and set the pace of the game.

A very cagey opening minutes with nothing of note up front came alive on the 13th minute when a corner kick from Ibenegbu was headed down in the box by Kufre Ebong. The ball fell on Osadiaye’s path for the player to blast a left-footed shot into the net for the opener.

It was end to end stuff on the 35 minutes; a straight battle between Ebong and Akwa United’s Harrison Ibukun with the former coming out tops to set up Ibenegbu who lost the opportunity and straight away, a long kick into Wolves’ vital area was only cleared by Rhiogbere Tejiri.

The homers meant business as they doubled their lead on the 51 minutes. Ibenegbu’s corner kick was well connected by Osadiaye’s head with the away defense ball watching and Olufemi Kayode glued to a spot.

The away team were reduced to ten men in the 53 minutes as Konnou Peterne picked up his second yellow card of the game and a marching order.

Osadiaye then completed his hat-trick and Wolves’ third with a brilliant curling effort from outside the box to take the game beyond Uyo boys.
