Expert: healthy lifestyles lead to long life

Healthy lifestyles can boost life, the Director, Women and Gender Affairs, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Abuja, Mrs. Annetu-Anne Aliu, has said.

She spoke at the kick-off of the Power Oil Healthy Heart Mission project in Abuja.

She said a recent study found that four bad behaviours—smoking,  too much alcohol, non-exercise, and non-eating of enough fruits and veggies—could lead to early death or make one age by about 12 years.

She said eating fewer than three servings of fruits and vegetables  daily could affect one’s health.

“Nutritional powerhouses filled with fibre and vitamins, fruits and veggies can lower your risk of heart disease and may even play a role in decreasing your risk of breast cancer.  Also, the inflammation-fighting and circulation-boosting powers of the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can banish wrinkles. Avoid yo-yo dieting. Stay away from fad diets. Exercise in moderation. Know what you weigh. Avoid smoking and alcohol intake or skimp on sleep,” she said.

Mrs Aliu said the ministry has endorsed the life-impacting programme, promising to support it.

“This is in recognition of the efforts and achievements of the Power Oil Healthy Heart Mission project. The presence of top officials of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Power Oil officials, representatives from various non-governmental organisation (NGOs), staff of  ministries at this event is an indication that everybody desires a good life.

“I am, particularly, pleased with the objectives of this kick off, which will address some challenges faced by women, the aged and other vulnerable groups as regards various heart-related diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Body Mass Index (BMI) and other heart-related challenges.  If you are overweight, it can lead to a higher risk of chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and certain cancers,”  Mrs Aliu said.

“Also worthy of commendation is that Raffles Oil Enterprise, makers of Power Oil, as part of its corporate social responsibility, in line with the Federal Government public-private partnership policies  conducted a survey, which revealed that high percentage of Nigerians,  women in particular, had been lost due to lack of awareness in getting and accessing basic medical information and regular health check-ups,” she added.

Mrs Aliu was the first to have her BMI and blood pressure checked at the venue.

Explaining the reason for the project, the Power Oil Public Relations Manager, Mrs. Omotayo Azeez-Abiodun, said: “Power Oil Health outreach programme has been going on for more than three years at various states across the country, and we are delighted to eventually get the attention and support of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, it clearly shows we are moving on the right track.”

Omotayo said the partnership would go a long way in benefiting families across the country.

She said the firm planned to work  with the mnistry for three years to cover various local governments in  Abuja to enable people check their blood pressure, pulse/visceral fat level, Body Mass Index (BMI) and do other medical consultation at each camp.

“This is a demonstration of Power Oil Health Camp, a corporate social responsibility initiative from the staple of Raffles Oil LFTZ Enterprise, makers of the heart friendly vegetable oil brand.

‘’It is also endorsed by the Nigerian Heart Foundation. Power Oil, started off in 2013 and has expanded into 16 locations across the country,” Mrs Azeez-Abiodun said.

Corps members get tips on healthy lifestyle

Batch B Corps members serving in Rivers State have been advised to cultivate a healthy lifestyle.

Power Oil medical team gave them the advice at their orientation camp in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. According to the team, healthy diet, moderate exercise and consumption of non-cholesterol  oil.

The team gave free basic medical checkup such as BMI, Blood Pressure, and Body temperature, medical consultation/nutritional advice to the Corps members. It some of the firm’s products donated to the camp.

Power Oil’s Public Relations Manager, Omotayo Azeez, said: “As the need to further reach out to more Nigerians becomes more imperative, we are more than delighted to also partner the Rivers State National Youth Service Corp by extending our reach to cover more youths, considering the alarming rate of heart health complications, which we believe sometimes could be avoidable through proper enlightenment and regular checkups, and that is what we are trying to achieve.

“Beyond our community outreach plans, we are also working with the conviction that everyone deserves to benefit from this life impacting project irrespective of localities, which is the reason behind the extension drive into other strategic institutions such as churches, mosques, schools and NYSC Camps.”

Brand Manager, Power Oil, Amisha Chawla said: “As part of the corporate social responsibility of Power Oil, we felt the need to offer something more to our consumers considering the costs of accessing medical check-up in the country and the low level of awareness on the need to stay healthy. Power Oil is endorsed by the Nigerian Heart Foundation.”

NYSC Rivers State Co-ordinator,  Mr. Omotayo Adewoye expressed appreciation to Raffles Oil, makers of Power Oil, on the partnership while stressing the significant benefits of leading a healthy life. “You will agree with me that we take physical fitness and nutrition very importantly, going by our regular daily drills and healthy choice of meals that staff and Corp members are being served during the orientation weeks, under the most hygienic condition.”

He said the product is endorsed by the Nigerian Heart Foundation,  recalling that Power Oil Health Camp has also visited Lagos State, NYSC Orientation Camp and flagged off the project in Kaduna and Oyo states through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

  • ‘How to train growing, healthy pastors’

‘How to train growing, healthy pastors’

Church Growth expert, Dr Francis Bola Akin-John, speaks with Sunday Oguntola on the imperatives of training for pastors ahead of a conference. Excerpts:

How did you conceive the idea of WATPRICO?

I was in a conference in Thailand for pastoral trainers when the idea came that we need to do West Africa Pastoral Trainers Congress (WAPTRICO) where we can bring people training pastors or have the vision of training pastors.

I discovered, with due respect to our bible colleges, seminaries, and schools of ministries, that we are not producing healthy pastors.

    How?

The bible colleges and seminaries seem to give them too many theological issues that render them almost useless by the time they graduate and come to pastoral ministries.

On their part, the informal sector has too many shallow, imbalanced and ephemeral teachings with nothing to do with preparing somebody to pastor a healthy church by the time they graduate.

Sometimes those trainings are one-month or three-month such that by the time they graduate, they come hurting eternal souls. Leading the church becomes a big problem. So, the idea came that we should bring people from formal and informal set ups for standard procedures and arrive at some resources and materials that will equip anybody God calls to pastoral ministry.

When he/she passes through those trainings, at least we can say that we have given them the basic and get them ready for a lifelong effective ministry.

What is the kind of training that any pastor planning to be healthy should undergo?

Healthy pastors should be trained on biblical interpretations, pulpit mannerism and pulpit delivery and communication. They should go through training on social media and internet. They should go through training on church planting, leadership, relationship, dispute resolution, crises management and the likes.

Those are things that we have discovered if you want to make pastoral training relevant, they must undergo. Pastors planning to be healthy should go through trainings that will develop his character, knowledge, personality, communication, relationship and congregation.

The health of the pastor is the health of the church and the health of the church is the health of the society. If the pastor is not healthy, the church will never be healthy. And if the church is not healthy, the society will never be healthy. Those are issues we want to deal with at WAPTRICO.

    Can we have perfect pastors?

No, but we can have growing pastors. There are no perfect pastors because all of us are in the making but you can be properly trained, equipped, grounded, moulded in a way that you can help others without losing your life. Pastors are dealing with souls and destinies. They have many pressures and challenges. Being perfect is not possible but we can have holy, effective pastors.

You can be a model and good example to others. You can make mistakes sometimes because you are human but you must be growing in character, measure and capacity.

You can minister in such a way you get people ready for heaven. You be a good example for them. Unfortunately, almost 90% of pastors of today don’t fall into the picture.

    They are not healthy?

They are not healthy because many of them didn’t go through trainings. They just wake up, say God has called them and open a church. You can only see that in the church. In major professions, can someone just wake up and say I am a pilot without being trained and certified?

I have been reading a lot about aviation lately. Pilots go through training every three months. Like doctors, they go for training while practicing. Doctors read medical journals and attend medical conferences. They keep upgrading even years after graduation. It is the same with engineers.

But when some pastors manage to graduate, they don’t go for training again. Yet, they are dealing with eternal souls. Those who embrace training don’t also get the best from the trainers. So, we want to build the bridge for this.

Are healthy pastors made or born?

They are made. Even if they were born, they must still go through training because pastoral work is a continuous learning process. You go for training for updating to interpret the scriptures, do the right things, handle issues, crises and souls.  Jesus says ‘I will make you fishers of men.’ He makes them by training them for three and half years.

But the biggest pastors in the country didn’t go through pastoral training. How do you relate this to what you are saying?

That is why we have lots of issues in our churches. That is why we have lot of issues with bible misinterpretations and misapplication. That is why we have a lot of errors being peddled about.

The truth is we don’t need to copy bad examples and in the last 30 years there have been a lot of errors in the Nigerian church, especially by our so-called big pastors.  It is because we don’t go through trainings. If we don’t want these things to continue, we need to be properly trained on how the church should be run.

We need to go through trainings. We need to check our trainings, and go for retraining in scriptures, in handling churches, in administering churches, in leading churches and sundry issues.

We need to retrain on how to avoid issues, scandals, rumours and certain unpalatable issues in the ministry. So, for me, the key is we need to go back to basic fundamental trainings. Enough of people running ministries and jumping into church planting without passing through solid, sound trainings.

For too long a time, the church in Nigeria has taken trainings for granted. You can’t be functional in the military if you don’t go for trainings and each promotion comes because you pass through a course. Pastors are also into spiritual military work. If you are not trained for it, you will be gunned down quickly.

You’d become a casualty and that is why a lot of pastors are becoming casualties. They are falling by the way side because it is a spiritual battle.

Does personal development make up for training?

Of course personal development is good but it is not the final. Whoever wants to do this work must go for trainings. Pastoral and ministerial works require lot of trainings because we have issues with people and money. Most members you are handling are hurtful and injured. They have lost hope in life and it requires proper trainings for you to know how to handle them.

What would be your advice to trained pastors who appear not to be doing so well compared to their untrained counterparts?

Those ones should update their training. You might be properly trained, doing a good job but lack strategies to win your society. You may be concentrating inside your church to win the community. There are things you should do but which you are not doing.

Those who seem to be doing well with crowd and money, they too should go and update their training because having a crowd does not say you are pleasing God. Crowd is not church. You can draw a crowd and yet you don’t draw people for heaven. You can have people that are in church yet they are not in Christ. So, everyone should ask himself: this crowd and money, are we taking them to heaven?

You are targeting one million healthy local churches in ten years. Is that realisable?

It is realisable if you have 500 pastoral trainers and each trains at least four, it is achievable. I am not saying I am going to do this alone. That is why we are calling this.

We want to partner with formal and informal trainers to draw up standard trainings for pastors and each should run with the vision. If I can have 500 pastoral trainers who can take the resources and run with it, it is achievable.

  • ‘Drinking while eating is healthy’

    ‘Drinking while eating is healthy’

A seasoned nutritionist has cleared the air on whether it is proper to drink water along with food while eating.

According to the Vice-President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Dr. Bartholomew Brai, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that drinking water during meal is wrong or that doing so reduces the nutritional composition of the food.

At the Nestle Nutrition Seminar at its Agbara, Ogun State Factory, Dr Brai said digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller particles or individual nutrients. It is accomplished through six processes, with the help of several body fluids — particularly digestive juices that are made up of compounds such as saliva, mucus, enzymes, hydrochloric acid, bicarbonate, and bile.

“The six processes of digestion involve: one, the movement of food and liquids; two, the lubrication of food with bodily secretions; three, the mechanical breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; four, the reabsorption of nutrients—especially water; five, the production of nutrients such as vitamin K and biotinby friendly bacteria; and six, the excretion of waste products.

“Comprehension of the tasks or processes needed to break down food is essential to an understanding of how and when food really begins to function within the body. For example, not understanding that carbohydrates break down into glucose could lead one to believe that the best source of glucose is in liquid form such as a soft drink. This could cause one to miss out on the nutrients (and great taste) in fruits, vegetables, and grains. Likewise, not understanding the digestion process could lead a person to believe in the myth of ‘food combining,’ or perhaps to think it is normal to be hungry all the time. But, in fact, the digestive processes normal to human physiology can simultaneously handle carbohydrates, fats, and proteins—and allow people to go several hours between meals, especially if meals are balanced in fiber and the individual nutrients needed,” explained Brai.

“So, those who erroneously said people should not drink while eating or that if they drink cold water it will cause their fat or oil intake to solidify thereby blocking or calcifying their arteries have no scientific bases for their argument,” said Dr Brai.

He explained that digestion begins in the mouth with the action of salivary amylase. The food material then progresses past the esophagus and into the stomach. A bolus (soft mass) of chewed food moves by muscular wave actions, called peristalsis, from the mouth to the pharynx, and then past the epiglottis that covers the larynx. The epiglottis closes off the air passage so that one doesn’t choke. The cardiac sphincter prevents reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus.

“So, from the Stomach to the Small Intestine food mixtures leaving the stomach are called chyme, and this empties into the small intestine after about two to four hours in the stomach. The small intestine is where most digestion takes place. A pyloric sphincter controls the rate of flow of chyme from the stomach into the small intestine. Most digestion occurs in the upper portion of the small intestine, called the duodenum. Below the duodenum is the jejunum, and then there is the last segment, called the ileum. About five percent of undigested food products are broken down in the ileum. This is why some people can have a small part of their intestine removed and still seem to digest most foods with little problem.

“Digestion of food that enters the small intestine is usually complete after three to ten hours. Once digestion is essentially finished, waste products leave the ileum with the help of fiber, and these solids then enter the large intestine (the colon). In the colon, water is reabsorbed; some nutrients are produced by friendly bacteria (vitamin K, biotin, vitamin B12); fibres are digested to various acids and gases; and minerals, such as potassium and sodium, are reabsorbed (when needed). Any fibre that is not broken down—and small amounts of other undigested products—are excreted in the feces,” he explained.

Dr Brai encouraged adequate drinking of water as, “Blood is about 92 percent  water and it carries nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Nutrients from the food we eat are broken down in the digestive system where they become water-soluble, which means they are dissolved in water. Water allows these nutrients to pass through the capillaries within the intestinal walls to the blood and circulatory system where the valuable nutrients and oxygen can be distributed throughout the body to all the cells and organs.

“In addition to the daily maintenance of our bodies, water also plays a key role in the prevention of disease. Drinking eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent, bladder cancer by 50 percent and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. And those are just a few examples.  People can read up credible links on the website, and can read more in depth about how water can aid in the prevention and cure of many types of diseases, ailments and disorders that affect the many systems of our bodies,” said Dr Brai.

  • ‘How to guarantee safe, healthy environment’

‘How to guarantee safe, healthy environment’

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has said the best way to guarantee safe and healthy environment is through planting of trees.

Governor Ambode stated this during this year’s tree planting campaign held at Oriade Local Council Development Area. The event held at Ijegun-Egba Primary School, Satellite Town Lagos.

He noted that the annual event was one of the cheapest ways of combating the effects of global warming and climate change, hence the state’s commitment to plant 10 million trees by 2020.

Represented by the Commissioner for Housing who spoke through Mr. O. Atitebi, Governor Ambode said “planting of trees is very important for our environment because trees provide oxygen, cool the atmosphere, help conserve energy, save water, prevent erosion, save our children from ultra-violet rays, provide food and brings diverse groups together as we are doing today. The state government is solidly behind this year’s theme which is ‘Lend a hand to Save Trees.’”

He urged the people to plant trees to replace those removed from vast acres of land so that we would be able to reduce the rate of ocean surge and erosion which has the tendency of displacing home and communities.

Noting that Lagos State has become a reference point in the country in terms of creating a green environment, he pledged his administration’s commitment to pursue the state’s greening policy of total regeneration of degraded sites.

He pleaded with all stakeholders to support government’s efforts at making the environment safe and clean as it cannot do it alone, even as he appreciated supporters of the programme such as Ecobank Plc and Reliance Towers Limited.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Samuel Adejare said the tree planting programme is to further help in propagating the Green Revolution Campaign geared towards climate change mitigation and adaptation, adding that besides beautifying the environment, the trees help in converting criminal hideouts and open spaces into orchards and woodlands.

Represented by Mr Adeola O. S., Adejare regretted that human activities are threatening the survival of trees.

The Commissioner revealed that “the government has embarked on several campaigns that aimed at sensitising the residents to the importance of supporting government so that we can jointly solve some environmental challenges that we created such as dumping waste indiscriminately into drainage system and canals that result in flooding. We are calling on Lagosians to preserve trees and promote landscaping and greening of our homes. It is important to plant trees always and protect existing ones in order to remain healthy and live in beautiful, safe and healthy environment.

In a chat with Southwest Report, the Sole Administrator of Oriade LCDA, Mr Abeeb Aileru said as a result of the effects of global warming, trees could help communities to mitigate the effects of environmental degradation.

He said: “The oxygen that we breathe in is emitted from trees for our survival. Trees are so important because they beautify the environment. They help in health-related issues in terms of the cooling effects on our body system. Though we use trees in different ways such as cooking, to do furniture and other things, there is the need to plant trees.”

The council chief said people’s attitude to trees is becoming worrisome, adding that they do not see the correlation between government planting trees when the people are hungry. What our people need is re-orientation. Let the people see the importance of planting trees, not only to beautify our surroundings, but also to get some health benefits derivable from trees which are so crucial to our survival.

  • Practitioners urge healthy lifestyle to fight diseases

Natural and alternative medicine practitioners have advocated a healthy lifestyle to prevent or reverse chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart attack and kidney failure, among others.

According to them, the major causes of death are chronic diseases due to people’s bad lifestyle choices.

A  health and wellness coach, Dr Biyi Olusanya, who spoke during Wholesome Health seminar with the theme: Maintaining a healthy human body in the 21st century, said people needed to be adequately informed about risk factors of chronic diseases to avoid them.

Olusanya said there was the need to proffer alternative healthcare solutions that are affordable, cost effective and sustainable in giving hope to people suffering from chronic diseases or non communicable diseases.

He said nutrition promotes the body’s self healing therapy, stressing that by adopting a healthy lifestyle people can put diseases at bay.

Besides, it is important for people to know that making the right  choices  promotes their health.

“People should embrace diet, fitness and spirituality, have a good state of mind and rest appropriately,” he said.

He said a holistic approach to treatment will help to prevent chronic diseases, adding that natural medicine provides total or complete healing.

Olusanya said: “The seminar was organised to change people’s lifestyle culture by educating them on the predisposing risk factors and alternative lifestyle options that promote healthy living. These are based on natural, scientifically proven and cost effective options that are easily available and affordable to everyone. This in turn will allay the fear of chronic diseases, reduce dependence on medication, which has deleterious side effects and increase life expectancy”.

Reverend Tony Akinyemi, a natural medicine practitioner, said people are looking for alternative methods to healing.

“Moreover, people are sick and tired of being sick and tired,” he said.

He said people should take ownership of health, adding that their role in managing their health is much more than that of the doctor.

Speaking on 21 steps to holistic health plan, he urged the people to increase their knowledge of healthy eating/ lifestyle.

He continued: “They should also abstain from taking every food that they can lay their hands upon, and thus be moderate. People should maintain personal hygiene and detoxify their system. Taking nutritious food is non-negotiable. They should drink water to prevent dehydration and exercise regularly. Rest and sunshine will also do them a lot of good.”

The reverend said people need to be pro-active by having regular check-ups, adding that they also need to laugh and be safety conscious.

“They should engage in healthy relationships, pray and worship God. Many are proud but humility helps. It is also good to show gratitude. They should exercise faith, which is a word therapy and have the will to live as well as have purpose so that their lives can count,” he said.

A naturopath, Dr Tina Mba, said people can improve their health by simply taking water to move their bowel and, as such, reverse constipation.

According to her, water should be drunk first thing in the morning and last thing at night to prevent or reverse constipation.

Getting rid of waste products from the system, she said, was a good way for people to begin their daily activities.

Dr Mba said vegetables and fruits can reverse chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart attack, and obesity.

She enjoined Nigerians to take fruits and vegetables to boost their immunity and, as such, prevent chronic diseases.

  • Healthy blood guarantees healthy body

    Healthy blood guarantees healthy body

How and why we need to keep our blood healthy

Blood is life. Blood in the human body is the equivalent of engine oil in a motor vehicle. Just like the vehicle engine oil, our blood has three main functions: transportation, regulation and protection.

Our erythrocytes, or red blood cells, are the most abundant cell type in the human body. Additionally, erythrocytes are anucleated, which means they don’t have a nucleus. This extra room allows for more haemoglobin to be stored in our red blood cells. Haemoglobin is a respiratory pigment, which binds to either oxygen or carbon dioxide. This allows oxygen to be transported around our body to our tissues and organs (and carbon dioxide to be taken away).

Blood also helps us to maintain homeostasis by regulating our internal body pH and temperature as well as how much water is in our bodies at a given time. Plasma, our connective tissue matrix, is about 90 percent water. Thus, the crucial importance of healthy blood cells cannot be over-emphasised as it is vital in protecting our bodies.

Haemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen. Red blood cells also remove carbon dioxide from your body, transporting it to the lungs for you to exhale. Foods rich in iron help us maintain healthy red blood cells. Vitamins are also necessary to build healthy red blood cells. These include vitamin E, found in foods such as dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds, mango, and avocados; vitamins B2, B12, and B3, found in foods such as eggs, whole grains, and bananas; and folate, available in fortified cereals, dried beans and lentils, orange juice, and green leafy vegetables.

Most people don’t think about their red blood cells unless they have a disease that affects these cells. Problems with red blood cells can be caused by illnesses or a lack of iron or vitamins in your diet. Some diseases of the red blood cells are inherited.

Diseases of the red blood cells include many types of anemia, a condition in which the body can’t produce enough normal red blood cells to carry sufficient oxygen throughout the body. People with anemia may have red blood cells that have an unusual shape or that look normal, larger than normal, or smaller than normal.

Symptoms of anemia include tiredness, irregular heartbeats, pale skin, feeling cold, and, in severe cases, heart failure. Children who don’t have enough healthy red blood cells grow and develop more slowly than other children. These symptoms demonstrate how important red blood cells are to your daily life.

In the past two decades, extensive research carried out by top scientists in the world have concluded that the inability of blood to fully perform its function and be healthy gives rise to Oxidative stress which has now been found to be the root cause of a wide range of ailments and diseases.

Oxidative stress (often called OS) is what happens when the body does not have enough antioxidants to neutralise free radicals. Free radicals are the unstable molecules that react with other substances in our body to damage cells or create abnormal ones. Overproduction of free radicals can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA), eventually leading to many chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease. Toxicity of free radicals also contributes to proteins and DNA injury, inflammation, tissue damage and subsequent cellular apoptosis.

Antioxidants are now being looked upon as effective therapy against these diseases, as they have capability to combat by neutralising free radicals. Diet is major source of antioxidants, as well as medicinal herbs. Recognition of upstream and downstream antioxidant therapy to oxidative stress has been proven to be an effective tool in alteration of any damage as well as free radical scavenging. Antioxidants have a wide scope to sequester and scavenge these free radicals to prevent oxidative stress.
