  • …And the boy died

Prince Tomiwa Adewale Abegunde who had heart surgery four years ago in Memphis, USA died recently. Taiwo Abiodun who monitored his surgery when it was carried out four years ago reports.

Prince  Tomiwa Adewale  Abegunde would have turned 18 next month but he died recently as preparations were on for this. His father   Prince Olanrewaju Abegunde, the Olunaun of Unaun,  Owo, Ondo State, is not happy, “This is not the best time for me. I was still celebrating our new King who is my friend when the bad news punctured my joy,” he told this reporter on phone.

The young Abegunde’s story was published in The Nation on Sunday in October 2013 when his parents cried for help to treat his hole in the heart. Help came as one Tunde Onibode, a businessman and philanthropist linked them with Gift of Life, a non governmental organisation in Memphis, United States of America that caters for children with heart defects. On January 17, 2015 they left Nigeria for Memphis. The organization took care of the expenses from the hotel accommodation, hospital bill, feeding among other things while the surgery was performed successfully.

His father narrated how it all went, “The operation lasted three hours   while he was discharged the following day. In fact, he was given only pain reliever, and that is paracetamol and that was what he used for some time.  He had no complaints, and we were asked to come back for check up 15years after.

“After the surgery we went to places, had fun and he enjoyed it. We took a lot of pictures. They treated us very well and made me feel at home. While in the USA he asked a lot of questions, because of the operation they did for him he said he would like to read Medicine in order to be saving lives as his own life was saved.  We returned home on the February 15, 2015. Since then he had no complaints at all. He was doing his normal duties at home and school.

“That was the whole story, until some weeks ago when he complained of stomach pain. He was so passionate that he knew what I loved. He was versatile, in fact, he was wiser than his age.”

According to Olunaun , “It was as if he had the premonition of his death. It’s a painful exit for a young boy who had the whole world at his finger tip. Tomiwa’s case is like a warrior who fought gallantly in the war front but came home to die after the war. After the successful   operation that lasted three hours, he came out of the theatre successfully and was certified medically fit and had not given any complaint since then. When we came back to Nigeria four years ago he was going to school like any other normal student until few weeks ago when he  complained of stomach ache, weakness and tiredness.

“He was taken to the Federal Medical Centre where he was admitted for three days and later discharged. The second time he   was taken to St. Louis Hospital where he again spent two nights only. He was getting better not until that fateful evening of July 21 when he told me he was getting weak and I should take him to the hospital as he would not like to die. He told me he was seeing  a tall man in white, but could not see his face, and that the man  beckoned on him to come  that he would give him rest. As he said this, he dropped his head and I immediately rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead at the Centre in Owo.”

Olunaun said his late son was in Senior Secondary School 2 at Fourahbay Secondary School, Owo. According to him, Tomiwa’s education was delayed because he missed classes when he went for the surgery. He has since been buried in Unaun Community land.

Some of the people at the Gift of Life Organization that performed surgery on him in Memphis have sent messages of condolence. Stephanie Barker Lawson wrote “I can’t even begin to explain my emotions …so overwhelming to hear of this precious young man’s passing …we dreamed of long life and prosperity! Praying for you all.” Another staff,  Dick Cockrell  wrote “Prince I am so sorry for your loss ! Adewale was an amazing young man. Our prayers for you and your family. God will give you grace to find peace in this loss.”

Tracy Russom Shism wrote “It breaks my heart to say that Adewale died. We take for granted living in a country where we have trained doctors and medical insurance [although not issues, it’s better than not] Adewale had such a sweet heart and was so loved by his family. His father fought so hard to save him. Olunaun Owo, my heart and prayers are with your family now and always. Knowing Adewale touched many lives.”

  • Expert challenges govt on heart surgery, training as WACS opens N1.2b secretariat

How can Nigeria be among leading comity of nations in surgery, especially cardiot-horacic?

It is by streamlining the training programme for cardiothoracic surgery, West African College of Surgeons (WACS) President, Prof King-David Terna Yawe, has said.

Yawe stated this at the inauguration of the N1.2billion secretariat of the college in Yaba, Lagos.

Yawe said the establishment of two or three well-resourced standardised international centres for Nigeria, or other West African countries, would boost surgery training.

He said that way, Nigeria would be a  boost to the West Africa sub-region, and WACS would be more than ready to offer technical advice, and support for its actualisation.

He called on the Armed Forces to also set up a Post-Graduate Medical Programme.

“In this regard, we commend the numerous strides of President Muhammadu Buhari in improving the health sector. We congratulate the government for signing into law the Residency training Programme Bill and the generous allocation made in the 2018 Appropriation Bill to address health needs of the country,” Yawe said.

Yawe, who estimated the cost of building the secretariat at N1.2 billion, explained that it is a symbol of unity of West Africans, adding: “It is another example of Anglophone-Francophone integration, cooperation and the pride of West African Surgeons who levied members and raised N1.2 billion for the permanent secretariat without bank loans or support from the public sector.”

Yawe recalled: “It was the dream and desire of the founding fathers and successive generations of college leadership to build a befitting office for our operations. In 2010, the first step was taken to raise funds for this project under the leadership of Emeritus Professor O. O. Mbonu.

“In 2012, land was purchased during the tenure of Professor O. K.  Ogedengbe and foundation was laid in 2014 by Professor Herve Koffi Yangni-Angate Jnr.

Yawe said when he assumed office last year, he chose middle and high-level surgical manpower development and extension of safe surgical services to the grassroots a priority.

“In partnership with the Presidential Committee on the Northeast Initiative and Pro-Health International, we have been conducting outreaches in Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe and Bauchi States and in Kebbi State where tens of thousands were offered free surgical services.

“We also carried out similar outreaches in Enugu and Abia states. Our Surgical Outreaches Committee has been performing credibly in many other nations and has been requested to assist Central African states in the same vein.

“To ensure essential surgery is readily available, our Surgical, Anaesthesia and Obstetric Plan Committee is working to generate data and develop National Surgical plans for each nation in line with global trends as captured in World Health Assembly Agenda 68, SGDs and AU Agenda 2063.

The college’s past president, Prof. Olajide Ajayi said: “It is another tutorial on unity in diversity, pragmatic decision-making processes, balanced judgments, strategic planning, personal sacrifices, courage and devotion to duty, institutional trusts and abiding faith in the divine guidance which permeated successive generations of our college leadership.”

Dignitaries at the event include WACS Asstistant Secretary-General, Prof Philip Mshelbwala; Assistant Honorary Treasurer, Prof Grace Parkins; Honorary Treasurer, Prof Aderonke Baiyeroju; Vice-President, Prof Peter Donkor; President-elect, Prof Serigne Magueye Gueye; past president, Prof Olajide Ajayi; representative of Lagos State Governor, Dr Olufemi Onanuga; WACS president, Prof King David Terna Yawe; representative of President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Cecelia O. • PUNCH Chairman Aboderin dies after heart surgery

Buhari, Saraki, Tinubu, Atiku, NPO mourn

PUNCH Nigeria Limited Chairman Gbadebowale Aboderin is dead. He died at 6:05am on Wednesday following a heart surgery at First Cardiology Consultants, Lagos. He was 60.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki, All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have extended their condolences to the Aboderin family over the death.

The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), consisting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has also commiserated with the late family.

The late aboderin, who was a United States (U.S.) trained pilot and Government College, Ibadan alumnus, was also chairman, PUNCH Commercial Printing Limited and Lukahed Properties Limited.

He was the founder and chairman of Dolphins Female Basketball Foundation, a former chairman of the Lagos State Basketball Association and a one-time vice-president of the Nigerian Basketball Supporters Club.

Wale’s father, Olu Aboderin, who co-founded The Punch, along with “Uncle” Sam Amuka-Pemu, also died in February 1984 – six months before his 60th birthday.

On September 28, 2016, during the posthumous 80th birthday of his mum, the late Mrs. Jadesola Aboderin in Lagos, Wale told The Nation about his regret in joining the family business.

He said: “The only regret is that it has kept me from being what I wanted to be and doing those things I really love to do. I would have been a pilot, musician, an actor or anything in the arts, which I really love doing and have a flair for. But my number one ambition was to be a pilot because I really love to fly.”

Aboderin also explained why, apart from his interest in basketball, he always kept away from the public glare.

He said: “I want to attend parties, but I have consciously refused to because I don’t have the time to tell lies. I am not saying this to say politicians are liars, but I would rather use my time thinking of ways to help humanity.

“When I go to places where my integrity would be compromised, the Devil sees it as an opportunity to get me. But as long as I know in my heart that what I am doing is the right thing, and that I am a brand and the brand stands for integrity; my personality, then I have no one to answer to.”

He is survived by his wife, Titilayo, and children.

But, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari commiserated with all members of NPAN, the media and sports industry on the death of the respected entrepreneur and philanthropist.

The President said Aboderin, who was greatly admired by his peers in the media and sports industry, would be long remembered for his resourcefulness, managerial proficiency and invaluable contributions to the growth of the sectors.

Buhari prayed that God Almighty would comfort all who mourn the late Aboderin and grant his soul eternal rest.

Tinubu, in a statement by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, said he was deeply saddened to learn of the death of the newspaper chairman.

The statement reads: “We lost Wale at a rather young age when we still needed him to continue to be with us. At 60, he still had a lot to offer us, but within those three scores though, he made appreciable impact and touched and changed lives.

“As Chairman of Punch, taking over from his uncle, the actuary ,Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, Wale continued to maintain and sustain the excellent journalism Punch is noted for, ensuring that the newspaper remains where it should be.

“Though he trained as a pilot, he was also a sports enthusiast. He particularly loved basketball to the point that he floated Dolphins Female Basketball Foundation. He was at one time the Chairman of our Basketball Association in Lagos.

“His death is a huge loss to the Aboderin family, both immediate and extended. The media and sports worlds, which he traversed and impacted positively, have also lost an outstanding partner.

“My deep sympathy and condolences to his wife and two children. I mourn with the Aboderin family, The Punch Newspaper, the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria and the media generally. I hope and pray that God grants his family, the strength to carry on and continue with those legacies he lived for.

“May God also grant him eternal rest.”

In his reaction, Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, described the late Aboderin as a philanthropist, sports lover and a businessman, who left indelible footprints on the sands of time.

He noted that the deceased lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation and contributed immensely to national growth through the media, youth and sports development, among others.

He commiserated with the immediate family – his wife and two daughters, The Punch Group of Newspapers, the media industry, sports enthusiasts and his loved ones, over the colossal loss.

Atiku, in a condolence message signed by his media office, said he felt the pains of the immediate Aboderin family in particular; the media, especially the NPAN and the teeming lovers of The Punch newspapers worldwide.

“In today’s world, 60 years is too young an age for anyone to pass on with their lofty dreams. Wale Aboderin’s untimely departure is certainly heartbreaking: painful to the family, a monumental loss to the fourth estate of the realm and the nation at large,” the Waziri of Adamawa said.

Atiku prayed that the soul of the deceased should find rest in eternity, and also that God grants the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

The NPO, in a statement by its President, Nduka Obaigbena, said it was saddened at the news of the untimely death of The Punch Chairman.

He described Wale as a consummate sport enthusiast, jovial, amiable  and  easy going.

“His death is a big blow, not just to The Punch Group, but to the entire media landscape of Nigeria and Africa.

He followed generations of media owners, who served the public purpose.

“We offer our condolences to the Aboderin family and The Punch Group. May his soul find peace. Perfect peace.”

In his own reaction, former Anambra State Governor  Peter Obi described the death of the Aboderin as a great loss to the nation.

Obi said due to his understanding of the real essence of journalism, he was able to create an identity for The Punch, punctuated by firm adherence to the ethics of the profession among its journalists.

The former governor prayed to God to grant his family and those he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss.

  • Boy, 3, needs N9m for heart surgery

Boy, 3, needs N9m for heart surgery

Always, the arrival of a new baby into any family is heralded with pomp and ceremony. This excitement was at its peak on May 22,  2014 when the family of Mr and Mrs Amos Adeniyi from Ondo State was blessed with their third child, Richard.

Parents, understandably, are eager to see their children grow up well and healthy with the prospect of becoming responsible members of the society. Most parents feel disappointed; and may break down if their child that had been a source of joy turns, as it were, to be a source of sadness and despair due to some complicated illness.

That exactly, is the mood pervading the family of Mr and Mrs Adeniyi as their son Richard has not shown any sign of “growing up well and healthy.”

According to the boy’s father, Richard was hale and hearty; full of life before December 18, last year. During breakfast, he could not finish his meal, he became very weak and his health condition changed drastically as he had seizure.

Not comfortable with the unwholesome situation of their son, the Adeniyis took Richard to  a private hospital in Ifako from where they were referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

He has been a patient of the Pediatric Cardiology Unit of (LUTH), Idi Araba Lagos.

According to clinical evaluation, Richard has symptomatic congenital heart disease, which was confirmed as Tetralogy of Fallot by Echocardiography

Richard requires urgent cardiovascular evaluation and open heart surgery to correct his heart defects in order to forestall irreversible and life-threatening complications. He is the last child among the three children of the Adeniyis and his medical condition has weighed down the family physically, emotionally and financially.

Narrating his plights, he told Southwest Report that he has spent so much and he is still buying expensive drugs which Richard takes every eight hours to sustain him before the operation in Germany by mid-March.

A Medical Report from LUTH issued and signed by Dr. J.O. Sokunbi, a Consultant Paediatrician/Paediatric Cardiologist on January 9, 2018 reads:

    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

SUMMARY OF THE MEDICAL REPORT FOR ADENIYI RICHARD

DOD: May 22, 2014.  Sex: Male Age: 3 years 7 months. Hospital number: 697757.

The above named three-year-seven-months-old male child is a known patient of the Paediatric Cardiology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.

Clinical evaluation indicated that Richard has symptomatic congenital heart disease, which was confirmed by echocardiography to be Tetralogy of Failot.

Richard will require further cardiovascular evaluation and possible open heart surgery to correct his heart defects in order to forestall irreversible and life-threatening complications.

This letter, therefore, serves as an introduction of the patient for any assistance that will facilitate surgical intervention at a centre with facilities for cardiac surgery.

You may wish to contact the consultant in charge if further clarification or information is required on Richard.

The crux of the matter here is that the life of a fellow being is in danger.

The sum of N9 million is required to carry out the heart surgery in Germany (all expenses included) which the cardiologist said must be carried out as quickly as possible to save the life of little Richard. This sum of money is too hard for his parents to afford.

Therefore, Mr and Mrs Amos Adeniyi are crying to kind-hearted Nigerians, people who believe in the future of our children, Nigerians who appreciate children as precious gifts from God Almighty, Nigerians who can imagine the pangs of labour that a mother goes through and the pains a mother or a father could go through in the event of losing a child to death and Nigerians who can willingly choose to be Simon of Cyrene who helped Jesus Christ to carry His Cross on the way to Golgotha.

The world Cross is symbolic here. Whenever and at whatever point in time you help in reducing the burden or pains of fellow humankind, it will be on record that you clothed, fed and gave water to Jesus to drink. History and destiny would certainly smile positively on you. Little Richard, for now, may be nobody. But a little help and sacrifice to help a dying little soul will certainly make him to be somebody tomorrow.

Hear Mrs Adeniyi, mother of little Richard: “In tears I beg fellow Nigerians to help in seeing that my child lives. When I remember the pangs and pains of labour, I wish I could have provided the money a day after the discovery of this defect in my child’s heart. But since my husband and I could not afford the huge amount of money required in exchange of my son’s life, I run and cry to you my fellow Nigerians to help in ensuring that this little Nigerian lives to be useful to himself and the country. I am confused.”

It is not out of place for this mother of three to feel disappointed and be confused at one point in time or the other when she feels that the days of her precious child are numbered if nothing is done and fast too.

In the same manner, his father Amos pleads:”I have emptied all my accounts to save the life of my son. I cannot meet up financially, the life of my son Richard means everything to me now. I need the support of all to make him survive. I want well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to assist me to save the life of my beloved son; any delay of the operation is dangerous. I believe God will bless everyone who supports and donates to fund my son’s surgery.

“We are appealing for help from Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and others to come to our aid urgently.”
