Come October 30, Baby Tobiloba Ademuyiwa will be six months old. Unlike many babies of his age, the baby is, however, having great difficulties with breathing.

Medical experts said he is suffering from symptomatic congenital heart disease.

He needs an urgent surgery to correct his heart defects to forestall life- threatening complications, according to a report signed by a Consultant Pediatrician with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. C.A.N Okoromah.

The treatment will involve a Truncus Arteriosus repair and further three to four more open heart surgeries for change of conduit.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ayodeji Ademuyiwa, said the condition was noticed a month after his birth.

They told our correspondent: “21 days after birth, he took ill and was taken to the hospital.

“We noticed his breath came in spasms so we knew something was wrong.

“He was diagnosed with symptomatic congenital heart disease (single ventricle, transposition of great arteries and pulmonary hypertension) in LUTH.”

They added: ”The doctor told us that our son’s diseases were highly rare, complex, dangerous and almost incurable in Nigeria.

“They said we would need to fly him to Bangalore, India, as soon as possible.

“A recent echocardiography scan showed that the disease is spreading so we have been advised by our consultant to do the surgery in the next two months.

    Baby-of-the-year survives another heart surgery

The 2015 Baby-of-the-year in Lagos State, Miss Oluwajomiloju Goodness Ogundimu has returned from India after undergoing another successfully heart surgery.

Ogundimu, who was diagnosed with a heart defect at birth, lost her mother Sherifat, a chartered accountant four minutes after her delivery.

Her grandmother, Alhaja Afolake Ogunnoiki, brought her to Alausa yesterday to thank Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for sponsoring the child for the surgery.

She said: “Before we could not go for the second operation, the child (Oluwajomiloju) was not doing well like in the past. If she eats, she would vomit. I spent all I had on various medical tests.

“I discovered that she was not growing and developing normally. After one year, I was praying to God not to allow Governor Ambode forget us. Then I got a call that we were going to India for an operation, it was like I won a lottery because I had nobody except God.

“In India, we were supposed to spend only three (3) days, we discovered that the child had developed tissue again, which is another hole in the heart. I became so perplexed because I don’t know anybody in India, but I was assured by the doctors there.

“But I am amazed and full of thanks because as the Governor was called, he gave his approval within 24hours for the operation to be undertaken. We were there for eight days.

“I am just a child of an ordinary farmer. I am not a politician; I don’t know both Governor Ambode and his wife personally. I have never met them personally; I have only seen them on pages of newspapers and television screens.”

She said the child will be due for another surgery in August next year saying that the doctors have assured that it would be the last operation to finally correct the heart defect.

“I am appealing to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode because that would be the third and final operation. I saw others who also came and had theirs.

“The child was named Oluwajomiloju when she was six months old in the womb by her late mother. She is Governor Ambode and Mrs. Ambode’s daughter, God only said I should be the one to nurse her for them.”

Kehinde Soyinka, of New Muta Street, Adiyan near Agbado, Ogun State, developed a heart disease about four years ago.

The disease usually comes with shortness of breath and heavy pounding of the heart.

Since she was diagnosed of the disease, she has been attending the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment and medication, which is very costly.

The mother of three said she has spent more than N300,000 pulled together from her personal savings and donations from family members and associates.

“My heart problem started about four years ago, when I experienced constant high body temperature and pounding of heart. I fell sick several times and I made frequent visits to private hospitals.

“At a point, I was taken to Orile Agege General Hospital, where I was asked to run series of tests leading to the discovery of my heart problems.”

“I was transferred to LASUTH and doctors said the solution is a corrective surgery that will cost N1 million and I have been looking for the money since last year without success.

“I am a tailor by profession, but my condition has not allowed me to work for about three years now. As I speak, I am still experiencing shortness of breath among other painful symptoms.”

According to her medical report signed by Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at LASUTH, Bode Falase, “the above named 30-year-old lady was seen in the Cardiothoracic clinic on November 24 and December 3, 2014. 25 children undergo heart surgery at UNTH

Twenty-five children, from various parts of the country, are undergoing open heart surgery at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.

Of the 25, three are from the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation. Others were referred from various hospitals.

The children were diagnosed of congenital heart diseases which either required valve replacement or surgeries.

A team of surgeons, led by Dr William Novic from the William Novic Cardiac Alliance International, United Kingdom, is leading the medical mission.

UNTH’s Chief Medical Director (CMD) Dr. Christopher Amah said it was the 10th time the hospital was carrying out such surgeries since it began the exercise three years ago.

He said the exercise had recorded about 95 per cent success since inception.

The CMD said with support from its overseas partners, including the Voom Foundation and Save a Heart Foundation, the hospital had successfully handled over 90 heart cases, involving children and adults.

“We charge less than 25 per cent of what is charged overseas. We also got some institutions to settle the bills of people who could not afford the fees, while we discharged others free,” he said.

He urged the state and Federal Government to support the programme either by sponsoring people or dedicating funds for its sustainability, stressing that it might be difficult for the hospital to sustain the programme when the partners quit.

Novic appealed to Nigerians to show interest in the open heart surgery, stressing that the disease had become rampant because people could not afford the cure.

He said his organisation would continue to partner UNTH to ensure that those with the ailment received adequate treatment.

Babcock varsity to perform open heart surgery

The Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, is set to perform the first open heart surgery in Nigeria in collaboration with Florida State Hospital, U.S. next month.

They would also be posted to Manila Hospital, Philippines and Mutual Trust Hospital, India.

Makinde expects that successes from the medical school would reverse the fortunes of Nigerian health sector.

“By next month, the first open heart surgery would be conducted at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital. From there to renal services, cancer service, ophthalmological services, to different specialties, which would turn the tide of medical tourism in the country,” he said.

The VC also said that the institution currently has 16 computer science students on exchange programme at the Polish University, Poland, for one year study and internship privilege.

For this year’s graduation, there were 1,607 undergraduates and 191 postgraduate students (141 masters and 50 PhD).

He also advised them to steer clear of religious and ethnic discrimination, which could limit one’s success in life.

  • UCH to perform 11 ‘Awake’ open-heart surgeries in April

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, will perform 11 open-heart surgeries in April, Prof. Kamar Adeleke, Chairman of the hospital’s Department of Intervention Cardiovascular, said on Monday.

Adeleke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that arrangements were being concluded to facilitate the surgeries.

According to him, the operation is tagged ‘Awake Surgery’ because the patients would be conscious during surgery, adding that “medication will be given to take the edge off while the operation lasted’’.

He said that the Department of Intervention Cardiovascular was limited financially and was seeking for cash donations from well–meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations.

Adeleke said that the department was partnering with some institutions, including Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and Aliko Dangote Health Institution.

He named other partners as the Kano Teaching Hospital, MTN Health Foundation, and the Lagos State Government.

Adeleke said that a team of Nigerian surgeons recently carried out a successful catheterisation surgery without the supervision of foreign experts.

He said that more than 200 patients were awaiting cardiovascular surgery at the UCH, adding that 11 of them were short-listed for the operation.

He said that the Intervention Cardiovascular Department was able to source for funds for surgery for six of the 11 patients.

Adeleke said that Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, wife of the Oyo State governor, and the Lagos State Government would sponsor three patients each, adding that each operation would cost two million naira.

He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support the department in carrying out the tasks.

It would be recalled that Adeleke led a team of experts in 2013 to perform the first successful open-heart surgery at UCH.

  • Baby needs N2.5m for heart surgery

Baby needs N2.5m for heart surgery

All eight-month-old baby Kehinde Adegbuyi, who is suffering from a hole in the heart, needs to live is N2.5million. Her mother Mrs Oluwatosin Wellington is appealing to Nigerians for help, reports WALE ADEPOJU.

The is hovering between life and death. To live she requires N2.5 million, the cost of a surgery to mend her heart. Holding the eight-month-old Kehinde Adegbuyi in her hands, her mother, Mrs Oluwatosin Wellington, stared into space, wondering where help will come from.

According to surgeons, she needs a corrective surgery to survive the ailment. The mother, who is a hairdresser, cannot afford the cash, which is the cost of surgery in an India hospital.

An Indian hospital, she said, is asking for N2 million for the surgery, adding: “We will need additional N500, 000 for tickets and other travelling arrangements.”

Mrs Wellington discovered her baby’s ailment five months ago and has since been taking her to the hospital.

“Her breathing, I discovered, was faster than that of her twin sister, Taiwo. It is quite unusual. So, I took her to see a doctor at the General Hospital from where we were referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba,” she added.

The woman noticed that at three months, her baby had frequent coughs and fevers; sometimes she would be crying and restless. Besides, she would not sleep at night.

In her medical report, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist, Dr Ekanem Nsikak Ekure, said little Kehinde has developed bronchopneumonia, congenital heart disease with congestive cardiac failure.

Echocardiography is coarctation of the aorta, large patent ductus arteriosus, moderate mitral regurgitation and ventricular septum.

Mrs Wellington said doctors at LUTH had been very supportive. “The doctors donated blood for her. They also assisted us with feeding because I hadn’t any money to take care of my baby,” she added.

She said she has been battling the problem alone because her husband “doesn’t want to have anything to do with a sick baby.”

She also claimed that he didn’t assist her with money to take the baby to the hospital.

Her trade is suffering because she has to take care of her baby.

“The problem is that my husband always blames me for the plight of the baby. He would say, ‘I don’t want to be associated or do anything with the baby’”, Mrs Wellington added.

  • Fatima still needs N2.5million for hole-in-the heart surgery

Fatima still needs N2.5million for hole-in-the heart surgery

Months ago, her plight was brought to the public domain. Yet, little Fatima still beaFourrs her pain as she waits for funds for treatment, Bukola Fasuyi

When her story broke, a number of Nigerians expressed sympathy and that raised her family’s hope of succor.

However, months after the news broke, help is yet to come the way of young Fatima Usman as she continues to battle two life threatening ailments at the same time.

Like her peers, Fatima had the dream of running around with her siblings and friends, studying to excel in school and become a successful legal luminary; today, all these seem a tall dream as she- silently awaits death with unusual calmness for a child her age.

At five, Fatima Usman’s life is gradually ebbing and like a candle in the wind may be snuffed out anytime soon if urgent help does not come her way.

According to the medical diagnosis, little Fatima has a heart disease and a life threatening malignant ulcer that is about to render her armless; and rapidly spreading to other parts of her body.

Before the diagnosis, Fatima was a bubbling kid with big dreams, high hopes and strong will. Neither she nor her parents anticipated such conditions she presently lives with until two years ago, precisely 2011, when she suddenly developed incessant unusual body temperatures.

According to her mother, Wunmi Usman, “In 2011, we noticed she was always getting sick and running very high temperature. We took it as malaria and gave her some malaria drugs. The temperature stopped for few days but later came back. We took her to a nearby hospital and she was treated for malaria again.”

After several days of her persistent ill-health and she began to emaciate, Wunmi said she took her to a General Hospital where she was diagnosed with a hole-in-the heart.

“We had taken her to a private hospital and at the hospital, we were referred to the General Hospital where it was discovered that she has a hole in her heart and would need to travel to India for treatment,” said Wunmi.

While still thinking of how to raise the needed money, another tragedy struck the little girl and her family. She was struck by another ailment.

“ We were still thinking about how to run around to raise the money, when, on a particular day in 2011, she was sent on her errand and on her way home she fell on her right arm by the elbow. We applied some ointment to the elbow to reduce the pain, thinking the pain would soon go away.”

“Before we knew what was happening, the hand began to swell few days later. We started to apply treatment to it but it refused to heal. We took her to the hospital and the hand was treated but we were surprised that the pores began to come out from the elbow some days after the treatment at the hospital. By the time we took her back to the General Hospital, the injury had become worsened,” her mother reports sadly.

“It was at the General Hospital that the injury was diagnosed of ulcer. Right now, the hospital said we need N2.5million for the treatment of the heart and the hand,” Wunmi concludes with a sigh.

Fatima’s mother said when neighbours drew her attention to her daughter’s story in the newspapers after exhausting all available means of raising money, she was elated and hopeful that their long search for a lasting solution might be around the corner. However, she says the hope is fast turning into despair as help is yet to come their way. Their search for the solution to her child’s health problem seems still far.

Wunmi Usman, the mother of the girl barely able to hold back her tears is pleading with well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the family financially so as to save the life of the child.

“I want Nigerians to help my daughter; I have no means of raising the money. I want them to help us so that Fatima would not die,” she begged.
