Heineken: Winners set for UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon

It was excitement galore last Wednesday night at the Heineken House Lagos, as two of the final five lucky consumers who will watch the UEFA Champions League final emerged. They will enjoy an all expense paid trip to the Stadium of Light in Lisbon Portugal courtesy of Heineken the international premium lager beer.

At half time and with emotions at boiling point at the Allianze Arena in Munich during the epic Bayern Munich – Manchester United clash as well as in the Estadio Vincent Calderon mastery display of in-form Atletico Madrid’s crushing of FC Barcelona, guests and consumers at the Heineken House Lagos all witnessed the all important transparent draw ceremony.

It was conducted by the Managing Director CEO Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr.Nicolaas A. Vervelde. There was palpable tension in the jammed packed arena, after he announced the first of the two winners of the night.

Jayne Nelson Uzuegbu, a banker and Manchester United fan, was the first winner out of the 790 participants of the Heineken ‘Match Your Half Ticket’ promotion in Lagos. However, with repeated calls and nobody in sight to claim the winning ticket and few seconds left for ticket to be voided for a repeat of the draw, a charming lady emerged from the Football Arena Room on the upper lounge with her raffle ticket to ‘match’ the winning ticket.

“I almost missed it because my mind was how my team, Manchester United will get the crucial away goal against Bayern Munich. I was at my favourite viewing room, (Football Arena Room complete with real stadium seats) it took me some time to come down stairs to claim my winning ticket.

“The lesson I have learnt tonight is never to give up because that micro of a second can be a life changer,” remarked Uzuegbu whose luck almost shone on her Manchester United, which scored the opening goal in their 1-3 loss to Bayern Munich.

The second winner, Sopuluchukwu Benjamin Ezugorie, a banker and Chelsea fan, claimed his ticket almost with the ‘speed of lighting’ as he was seated at the outer lounge which was not too far from ceremony room.

“I still don’t know if I am in dreamland. I count myself extremely lucky having  won an invite to be part of this premium viewing experience at the Heineken House Lagos and here I am again winning the opportunity to be among lucky football crowd out there at the stadium in Portugal”,  Ezugorie remarked on Wednesday night.
The two, completed the number of five lucky Nigerians. Before them were  the trio of Nonye  Christie Chalokwu from Port Harcourt, Usurhyel Auta in Abuja and Olufunsho Michael Akintoye who had earlier won from SMS competition during the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour held last month in Lagos.

The five winners will be part of a loaded Heineken programme that will climax with the final match at the 65,647 capacity Stadium of Light in Lisbon, Portugal next month.

The Managing Director of NB Plc, Mr. Vervelde, earlier commended all the consumers for being part of another successful programme and urged all the participants to see themselves as worthy champions.

“To us at Nigerian Breweries, all our consumers are winners but only the five winners of this all-expenses paid trip to the final match in Lisbon were ‘lucky’ to have triumphed among the rest,” he remarked.

Last season, Heineken sponsored five consumers namely: Boyo Gbire, Mayowa Opeyemi George, Isaac Nonchie Ijeh, Franklin Chukwu Ijeh, and Diana Nwajiaku-Smart to the Wembley Stadium final match in London.

Heineken ‘Match Your Half Ticket’ winners relish Allianz Arena spectacle

It was indeed a dream come true for all the five winners of the Heineken ‘Match Your Half Ticket’ promotion as they were counted among the 69, 901 fans at the Allanz Arena, Munich, Germany for the Bayern Munich and FC Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League second round match played last week.

All the five lucky consumers had enjoyed full expense paid trip to watch the match, courtesy of Heineken. They all chorused last week on their return back to the country that the memorable trip will for a long time linger in their minds.

“I am delighted to be part of this historic visit to one of the best football stadiums in the world but more importantly, I watched Arsenal FC my darling teams live at a major football tournament courtesy of Heineken. Moments after the match got underway, my initial thoughts were that I was watching moving statues of Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla , Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, coach Arsene Wenger and many more notable star players that were on the team list for the night,” Ejike Emmanuel recalled.

Olawale Ajadi, a staunch FC Barcelona fan, said he was overwhelmed by the activities of the partisan supporters of the teams and thinks Nigerian football fans should emulate whenever they are in the stadium to support their teams.

“This all-expense paid trip courtesy of Heineken has really opened my world. I found myself in this massive crowd and everything was in order, no stampede or molestation from opposing football fans. Outside the stadium, fans of Bayern Munich and Arsenal were united by football and I was glad with the way they were taking pictures and I saw fans of different nationality united by the beautiful game of football. As a passionate football fan, it was a big lesson for me that orderliness is the surest way to peace,” he noted.

The short trip to the match was a blessing in disguise to the trio of Nonso Oguama, Onimisi Anibaba and Chimezie Onwumere as they were able to ‘kill two birds with one stone’. The planned trip by Heineken on Monday last week ensured that the team left Frankfurt Wednesday morning and arrived in time at the new Heineken House in Ikoyi, Lagos to be part of the UEFA Champions League Trophy display on the night.

“I am one of the major beneficiaries of this trip because my team, Arsenal did not lose in Munich although we lost out in the tournament. It is important to note that aside the match, I also saw and torched the priceless UEFA Champions League Trophy. It was glad for me to meet former World Footballer of the Year, Ruud Guilit live in Lagos courtesy of Heineken,” Oguama commented with excitement.

In a related development, the Senior Brand Manager Heineken, Ngozi Nkwoji enjoined all the lucky winners to take positive attitude from the Allianze Arena experience. “It is not all about being a die-hard fan of a particular team but the ability to transform it to make a positive change in one’s life,” she said.

She also encouraged consumers to be part of the ‘Road to The Final’ campaign that will come up next month. The event will lead to the selection of five consumers that will enjoy paid trips to Lisbon, Portugal on the 24th of May for the final match of UEFA Champions League.

“The selection process we used last year will be retained. We encourage consumers to show their skills, wit and inventiveness to win tickets and be among the thousands of ‘privileged’ football fans that will watch the match live at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon, Portugal, she expressed.

Activities at the Heineken House resumes tonight when the last second round matches would be played. Over the last few seasons, Heineken has been rewarding its Nigerian consumers with a premium viewing experience of UEFA Champions league football, at the Heineken House Lagos.

In fulfillment of its promise to consumers at the beginning of this season, the International premium lager beer, Heineken, has sent five lucky consumers to watch the high profile UEFA Champions League match involving Bayern Munich and Arsenal live at the Allianze Arena in Germany.

The traveling team left Lagos last night (Monday) aboard Lufthansa Airline and arrived Frankfurt this morning (Tuesday) for a short trip to Munich for the all important match this evening at the Allianze Arena.

Interestingly, it will be the second time that Heineken consumers will enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to same stadium for a UEFA Champions League match. Earlier, five lucky consumers of the brand enjoyed the spectacle of FC Chelsea’s triumph of May 2012 when they lifted the trophy for the first time in the club history.

“This is a once in a life time opportunity that Heineken has offered the consumers. There are millions of football fans out there that have the financial means and would have loved to be at the stadium live but the precious match tickets are not available. Heineken has made it possible for these lucky Nigerians to feel the passion of the game directly and be part of the 69,901 seating crowd.

“While we congratulate them for this feat, we also want to appreciate all our consumers especially those who participated in the ‘Match Your Half Ticket’ promotion in the group stage last year,” said Ngozi Nkwoji, Senior Brand Manager Heineken.

Although all the lucky winners still have their favourite clubs still in the race to win this season’s competition, the duo of Emmanuel, who won his ticket from Enugu and Oguma from Port Harcourt are the luckiest of all as both are Arsenal FC fans and have wished Heineken should give them the opportunity to watch their teams live at any stadium in Europe.

“Please if it is a dream do not bother to wake me up until after the match on Tuesday,” Emmanuel remarked at the airport shortly before the team departed.

“My affinity to Heineken has paid off because I just can’t imagine myself watching my team live at the stadium and win or lose I am okay with this adventure,” he yelled.

In the case of Oguma, he is optimistic that Arsenal will scale the Bayern Munich hurdle and will be glad to be part of the historic night at the Arena. “I want to be part of this historic night for millions of Arsenal fans in Nigeria. We scored two goals there last season and we can repeat same feat against them tomorrow night (Tuesday),” he asserted.

While another travelling consumer Onimisi from Abuja, who is a staunch FC Chelsea fan, said he is glad to be at the stadium where his favourite club won the UEFA Champions League trophy two seasons ago. “Allianze Arena is one of the best football stadiums and it happens to be the place where Chelsea triumphed against Bayern Munich in the final match two seasons ago. I am glad to be there live courtesy of Heineken International premium lager beer,” he noted.

The Heineken ‘Match Your Half Ticket’ promotion commenced in September last year when the group stage matches of the UEFA Champions League commenced and consumers at selected bars across the country participated in the programme.

The fun and excitement of the UEFA Champions League will not be limited to the five lucky consumers at the Alianze Arena alone because the Managers of the new Heineken House have concluded arrangements to give visitors and consumers a world-class viewing experience tonight and tomorrow.

“Everything in the House is in perfect shape. Those who have the opportunity to be here will interact with celebrities in the entertainment and football industry when the matches are on in real time, with chilled Heineken beer available to enjoy the games. Aside the excitement that will go with the two matches this evening, we have a pleasant surprise for all the visitors that will come for the matches tomorrow when FC Barcelona play host to Manchester City at the Camp Nou,” the brand manager, Nkwoji disclosed.

The persistence of the caller made me to listen to the full message which to me was too good to be true. But the reality of the truth came when I tuned to Nigerian Info radio station during the match I heard my name as a winner. I was elevated and celebrated the feat with friends who came to celebrate with me,” Ajadi recalled.
