The suspects were reportedly arrested in the wee hours of Sunday at Kelly Ann Hotel/Event Centre at 3-7, Adenrele Street, Egbeda, during an alleged initiation into a gay club.

While one of the suspects admitted to the offence, saying he wanted to secure visa to the United States of America (U.S.A) or Canada through the club, others denied being homosexuals, insisting that they were at the hotel for wedding, trading and leisure, among others.

Those arrested are: Prince Collins, 23; Emmanuel Odiza, 25; Ola Rotimi; Miracle Onyeka; Wole Ojo, 24; Daniel Sukari; Wealth Olasunkanmi, 25, Madu and James.

Parading the suspects, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said the command got intelligence around 12.30 a.m on Sunday that some men were about to be initiated into a homosexuals’ club between 1 a.m and 2 a.m at the event centre.

The police chief said the action contravenes Section 1(1) of The Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014.

He added that it was on the strength of the information the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in charge of Shasha and Idimu stormed the location around 2 a.m.

“On arrival, about 80 men were met in a hall, taking different types of drinks, including banned substances, like Tramadol, Shisha, laced with substances suspected to be marijuana.

“As soon as they sighted the police, they ran towards different directions. But the team arrested 57 of them. Investigation into the case is ongoing.

“The youths have graduated from cultism to homosexuality. This is a dangerous dimension. We must stop them before they infiltrate our streets and schools. This war against gay should not be left for security agencies alone.

“We are fighting cultism, drugs and, at the same time, homosexuality. I think all hands must be on deck to stop this act. Information was received from a sister agency. It is commendable.

“I appeal to the public to emulate the informant and give us reasonable information that will lead to the arrest of suspected gay. We are on the trail of others now on the run.

“I want to advise parents to be weary of the people their children move with and where they go to at a particular time.”

Parading the suspects, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said the command received intelligence around 12:30am on Sunday that some young men will be initiated into Homosexuals’ Club between 1am and 2am at Kelly Ann Hotel/ Event Centre.

He said the action contravened Section 1(1) of the Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014, adding that it was based on the information that the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in charge of Shasha and Idimu stormed the location around 2am.

“On arrival, young men numbering about 80 were met in a hall taking different types of drinks including banned substances like Tramadol, Shisha laced with substances suspected to be Marijuana, etc.

“As soon as they sighted the police, they ran into different directions but the team arrested 57 of them. Investigation into the case is ongoing.”

Collins said he was a food vendor in front of the hotel, adding that he was arrested where he plied his trade.

“I sell food in front of the hotel. When police came they said I am under arrest and I followed them as a law abiding citizen. There were many women in and outside the hotel but they were not arrested. I am innocent,” said Collins.

Odiza said he was at the hotel to attend a birthday party, claiming he knew nothing about the gay club initiation.

Rotimi, a student, said he was also at the hotel for a birthday party, wondering why the police did not arrest women who were there.

Onyeka said he was arrested beside his car, which he used for cab services on the side.

“I work with AZ Apapa but I also use my car for taxi to get small money. I was arrested just by the side of my car near Barracks Bus Stop. I am married with children. I am innocent.

Ojo said he was drinking at the hotel’s bar when he was picked up.

Sukari said: “I stay in Rivers State but came to Lagos for a beauty pageant, Mr Tourism at Lekki. I left there around 6pm. I was heading to Egbeda to lodge in the hotel because I do not stay in Lagos. Because of the closure of Third Mainland Bridge, there was a heavy traffic, so I got to the hotel very late.

“I was about to lodge when the police team came in. I was asked to lie down which I obeyed because I felt I have done nothing wrong.”

James said he was at the hotel to perform a dance, adding that that was how he earned his living.

Olasunkanmi said he was at the hotel for a birthday party, adding that he was invited by a friend, Muyiwa.

“I went for a birthday party. There were many males and females there. Even Muyiwa that invited me was not arrested. It was a raid. I did nothing wrong. I was piping Shisha, which isn’t a crime. I did not add anything in the Shisha. There was no initiation going on. I think they found the Tramadol in someone’s pocket.”

  • Six males arraigned in court over homosexual act in Abia

Abia State Command Headquarters of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) said that it would be arraigning six male suspects homosexuals arrested in a hotel in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state.

The suspects, according to the Commissioner of Police in the state, Anthony Ogbizi were Fred Ndubuisi, Anyanwu Chidera, Kamsiriochukwu Onuaha, Anderson Emeruwa, Sampson Nwadike and Nnadi Promise.

Among suspects was an undergraduate, who were allegedly said to have been caught practicing homosexual in a hotel room.

Ogbizi while parading the suspects at the Command’s Headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital said that they were arrested at City Global Hotels by Ekenna, off Okigwe road Aba through intelligence report.

Ogbizi said they were caught in the act at City Gobal Hotel, Aba, about 2a.m. The commissioner said the suspects were nabbed following a distress call from the manager of the hotel.

He added that the manager alleged that the suspects were seen kissing one another at the hotel bar by a worker who reported the incident to the management.

Ogbizi said the manager went to the hotel room where two of the suspects had checked in earlier and discovered that they were six in the room, romancing and kissing one another.

According to the police boss, the suspects were interrogated and it was discovered that they were members of a gang who came into the state from nearby states to practice unnatural act in the hotel room.

The commissioner said the hotel management would bring its evidence against the suspects when they were charged to court.

However, the suspects denied being homosexuals. The suspects said they were in Aba for the birthday party of one of their friends, Ndubuisi taking place in the same hotel.

One of the suspects, who gave his name as Chidera, claimed to be an undergraduate of the Imo State University, Owerri.

He said they all checked into one hotel room because they were told that the category of room they asked for was not available, in the alternative therefore they decided to manage one room to change their clothes before going to the club within the hotel.

“I arrived the hotel about 6p.m. and I asked my friend to book a room for me, when I discovered that we were many in one room but he said that the hotel management said the N5,000 rooms we could afford were not available again. So we decided to manage that one room.

“After drinking at the hotel bar, we went to the room to change our clothes for clubbing. It was at that time that we heard a knock on the door and when we opened the door, the manger started asking why we were six in the room and after explaining to him, he said they don’t allow more than three people in a room. That was how he accused us of practicing homosexuality in the room.

There was nothing like kissing or making love in the room and we are not gays,” Chidera said.

The celebrant, Ndubuisi, who claimed to be a hair stylist, also said that he only invited his friends for his birthday party and lodged them in the hotel. Ndubuisi added that they did not indulge in any homosexual act.

He said: “I invited my friends for my birthday and I wanted to pay for two rooms but we couldn’t because the rooms were filled up, that was why we were in one room.”

The Commissioner of Police said that they would be arraigning the suspects in court as soon as investigation was concluded.

  • Lagos arraigns hotel owner, workers for aiding homosexuality

Lagos arraigns hotel owner, workers for aiding homosexuality

…As court remands suspects in prison pending legal advice

The Lagos State Government on Friday arraigned the owner of Vintage Hotel in Owode Onirin area of Ikorodu, Chief Patrick Okeze before a Yaba Magistrate Court for allegedly aiding and promoting same sex sexual activities and gay club in his hotel.

Okeze was arraigned alongside two of his workers, Sunday Isang and Bright Oba for allegedly encouraging the illegal act to be perpetrated by young men and minors in the hotel contrary to the provisions of Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014.

The State Government had on Thursday arraigned 28 adults and 12 minors before Yaba and Ebute-Metta Magistrate Courts respectively for engaging in homosexuality using the said hotel.

Specifically, Okeze and his workers were said to have aided 40 people and others still at large, to engage in same sex activities as well as gay club/party in the said Vintage Hotel located at No 999, Ikorodu Road/Toyin Close, Weigh Bridge, Owode Onirin, Lagos contrary to and punishable under Section 5 (2) of the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2014.

After the one-count criminal charge against Okeze (56), Isang (30) and Oba (28) was called and read before Chief Magistrate Adewale Ojo, the defendants were not allowed to take their plea on the account of the fact that the court lacked the jurisdiction to adjudicate on the subject matter of the case.

The prosecution team including Ms Adetutu Oshinusi, Bosun Aroyehun, Folabi Sholebo, Olaitan Shoetan and Nnena Okereka, all from the State’s Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), urged the court to remand the defendants in prison pending the outcome of the legal advice of the DPP.

But the defence team led by Mr Alli Abba urged the court to discountenance the application of the prosecution, and admit the defendants to bail, as the offence under which they were charged, is bailable.

He referred to the arraignment of the principal suspects in the case who were granted bail by the same court on Thursday, assuring that his clients would not abscond if admitted to bail.

But in response, Police’s counsel, Mr Effiong Asuquo said the application for the defendants to be remanded in prison pending legal advice was based on the need to prevent the defendants from going back to run the hotel if granted bail.

He said the subject matter of the case being about Same Sex Marriage Act could only be tried at the High Court, and that the application was needed to keep them in custody pending legal advice.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ojo held that in view of the provisions of Section 264 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, he found merit in the application for the defendants to be remanded pending the DPP advice.

The court said having examined the affidavit in support of the application for remand, he found “sufficient merit” in it, and ruled that: “It is hereby ordered that the 1st, 2nd and 3rddefendants be remanded in prison custody pending their legal advice.”

The Magistrate also adjourned the matter to September 4, 2017.

Magistrate Ojo had, after the arraignment of the 28 adults on Thursday, ordered them to undergo health screening by the Lagos State Aids Control Agency (LSACA) and sexual rehabilitation by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).

Responding to the arraignment, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem said the development was an eloquent testimony to the commitment of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration to fight all forms of crime and criminality.

“The arraignment is a confirmation of the commitment of the Lagos State Government to ensure that every resident abides by the law of the State and also to put a stop to the exploitation of under-aged children who are often lured by unscrupulous and criminally-minded adults to engage in acts or behaviours that are not in consonance with the laws of the State,” Kazeem said.

He also reiterated the commitment of the State Government to do everything humanly possible to uphold the Child Rights Protection Laws of the State.

To ensure proper rehabilitation of the suspects in line with their bail condition, DSVRT Alternate Chair, Mrs Clara Ibirogba, who was at the arraignment, pledged to work with other relevant agencies of the State Government to ensure that the best care is provided for the suspects.

On his part, Dr Michael Essien of LSACA also promised that the minors would be given proper counselling and necessary medical screening to determine the State of their well-being.

An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Wednesday ordered the remand in prison of two men, Paul Frank, 31, and Christian Ejimofor, 22, over alleged homosexuality and stealing.

The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly romanced and had carnal knowledge of each other.

The prosecution said further that the accused also attempted to have carnal knowledge of one Solomon Shaibu after stealing his Techno Y6 phone, valued at N25, 000.

It said the offence contravened Sections 214(3), 217 (3) and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. II of the defunct Bendel State.

Judge throws out China’s first same-sex marriage case

China’s first case by a same-sex couple seeking the right to marry was dismissed by a Judge in the central province of Hunan on Wednesday.

The couple was suing the local Civil Affairs Bureau in Changsha city for refusing to issue them a marriage registration certificate.

“We are all dissatisfied with the result and I will appeal,” 27-year-old plaintiff, Sun Wenlin, told the newsmen after the court session.

He added that his mother was in court to support him.

His lawyer, Shi Fulong, said that he expected the outcome but was surprised that the judgment was announced so quickly.

“The case opened and closed this morning, we lost, the reason given was that according to the Marriage Law, only a man and a woman can marry,” Fulong said.

Wenlin said earlier that the wording of the law did not say man and woman, but husband and wife.

“I personally believe that this term refers not only to heterosexual couples but also to same-sex couples,” he said.

His lawyer said that the judgement would be ready between the next 10 days, saying “we will receive the written judgment within 10 days and we will appeal within 15 days after we get the paper,”Fulong said.

Several hundred supporters were gathered outside the courthouse on Wednesday morning, mostly local Chinese but a few foreigners.

“Today when we walked out of the court, people were boiling mad and they shouted go for it.

“Some of my friends told me that my case has encouraged them, although they still don’t dare to come out,’’ Wenlin said.

China’s lesbian and gay rights movement has been growing since the early 2000s, aided by internet forums allowing formerly isolated individuals to form a community.

Homosexuality was a crime in China until 1997 and classified as a mental illness until 2001.
