  • Anglican Church may break up over homosexuality

Three hundred and thirty one  Anglican Bishops worldwide have threatened to pull out of the church if the American and European communion refuse to renounce homosexuality.

They gave the warning  at the second Global Anglican Future Conference, GAFCON,  in Nairobi, Kenya attended by  1358 delegates,  including 331 Bishops representing tens of millions of faithful Anglicans worldwide, including Nigeria.

Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese and of the south-east chapter of the Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma who disclosed the outcome on arrival at Akanu Ibiam international airport Enugu said different communion of the Anglican church may secede if they insist on imposing homosexuality on the church.

Different Bishops of the Anglican Church from the South east that arrived the airport from Nairobi agreed that what Bishop Chukwuma said was their opinion, stressing that they will severe their relationships if their pro-gay Bishops do not back down.

  • Revisiting abortion, homosexuality

THE euphoria that heralded the recent birth and unveiling of the royal baby in Britain, a country that prides itself as one of the leading bastions of same sex marriage and abortion rights, calls to question the integrity and strength of their convictions and fidelity to the pro-choice and gay rights advocacy, which negates the primary purpose of marriage: the raising of children and the perpetuation of the human race.

Tributes, dripping with love, came in torrents from all corners of the globe, as world leaders and royal fans, expressed their best wishes to the royal couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on the birth of the royal baby, said to be the third in line to the British throne.

On this glorious day, the American President, Barrack Obama, gleefully wrote: “On the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child, we wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings. The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations.”

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, also wrote: “I am delighted for the Duke and Duchess now; their son has been born. The whole country will celebrate. They will make wonderful parents.”

Similar messages came from other world leaders, mostly those opposed to the banning of same sex marriage and the imposition of strong legislations against abortion.

Is it not, therefore, the summit of paradox and contradiction for the same countries that legally permit same sex marriage and the termination of pregnancies, both of which operate as enemies of child birth and natural family life, to also at the same time, roll out the drums in celebration of a new life born into a natural family of a man and woman, whether of blue blood or not. What a great irony.

The Nigerian parliament in a rare display of patriotism, had acted in consonance with the wishes of the vast majority of our citizens, when it boldly refused to succumb to external pressures from the international community, particularly, America and Great Britain, to pass the bill criminalising same- sex marriage in Nigeria.

This bill titled: “Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill, 2011” was endorsed to the consternation and discomfiture of the western powers, who were bent on frustrating its passage, in furtherance of their global agenda towards the legalisation of abortion and homosexuality. Note that a similar bill was earlier approved by the Federal Executive Council sometime in 2007 and presented to the National Assembly for debate at that time but could not sail through the two Chambers, until the advent of the present bill.

The final endorsement of this bill, first by the senate in November last year and later by the House of Representatives, in May this year, was completely shorn of any lobbying or political partisanship usually prevalent in the legislature, as both arms rose up in unison and with one voice, to defend our African identity by the overwhelming and unanimous passage of the bill, soon to be accented to by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, before coming into operation.

Even the sponsored but half- hearted demonstrations, in opposition of the bill by a few gay association members, during the public hearings on the bill, did not deter the national assembly from enacting the bill into law, drawing huge support from all strata of the Nigerian society, particularly the leaders of both the Christian and Islamic religions in the country, all vehemently opposed to homosexual practices, believed to be foreign to our African culture and traditions, in all its ramifications.

Under the new law, persons who enter into a same sex marriage contract, or civil union commit an offence and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years in prison. Also, any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same sex amorous relationship in Nigeria, commits an offence and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison.

While western nations now gravitate towards availing LGBT’s and same sex couples equal legal rights, as heterosexual couples, happily, more African countries, bent on preserving their identity, are rather tightening enactments against homosexuality to chagrin and disgust of those patronising nations.

The passage of the anti-same-sex marriage bill in Nigeria, brings to 39 African countries that have so far passed the anti gay marriage laws. Expectedly, this had attracted much umbrage from western countries which threatened to cut funding for our various AIDS and HIV control programmes, as well as other strategic interventions, if the President signs the bill into law.

However, the passage of the bill not withstanding, unnatural carnal knowledge, including homosexuality, lesbianism and bestiality, has always been illegal and, therefore, a criminal offence under our criminal code, applicable in both the Southern and Northern Nigeria. And even in some states in the North that have adopted the Sharia Law, punishment for this offence is death by stoning. Although in the South and under the secular criminal laws of the North, the maximum punishment for same-sex amorous activity is 14 years’ imprisonment.

Specifically, Section 214 of the criminal code provides: “Any person who (a) has carnal knowledge of any person against the order, or (c) permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature, is guilty of felony is liable for imprisonment for 14 years.”

Equally as egregious is the case of abortion, which directly gnaws at the whole essence of life as the ultimate measure of all creation. In its stark reality, shorn of legalese, abortion, a derivative of the latin word aboriri, meaning, to “perish” simply refers to the termination of pregnancy by the forced or induced expulsion or removal of an unborn child from the womb any time between conception and before delivery.

Life begins at conception. A child is the product of natural evolution of the fetus or embryo, without which there is no life. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “In the normal course of nature the living embryo carries on its work of, self-evolution within the maternal womb, deriving its nourishment from the placenta through the vital cord, till, on reaching maturity. Abortion is a fatal termination of this process.”

Since the legalisation of abortion in many countries (excluding Nigeria), over 54 million unborn children have been killed, more than some country’s population and which translates to one baby every 20 seconds and with Britain alone accounting for more than 550 abortions daily. A scary statistics but true.

Abortions like homosexuality destroys the family by endangering the prospects of new births who are supposed to be bound together by the natural bond of marriage between a man and a woman, as every child needs a natural family for nurture, guidance and development of his or her personality.

The pro -choice activists always claim that it was the reproductive right of a woman to choose whether, a particular pregnancy was “wanted” or “unwanted” and as such was free to retain or terminate same, at will. But this argument is porous in the sense that where a private right is in conflict or injurious to a public right, it becomes void to the extent of such inconsistency with the public right.

In the words of Sonnie Ekwuwosi Esq, a Lagos Lawyer and frontline activist, “To begin with, right goes with responsibilities. There is no right to do whatever one likes, such as to become an armed robber or a murderer. More importantly, private choices can produce harmful public consequences.” Of course abortion remains a criminal offence under both our penal and criminal codes and is punishable under sections 228 and 229 of the Criminal code with seven years imprisonment.

You can imagine what would have happened if the Duchess of Cambridge had chosen not have the child for any reason in exercise of her reproductive right of choice, the royal baby would not have been born, and the royal family in communion with the whole world would have been denied the joy of celebrating the arrival of a future king of Britain, at this time. This is a ringing act of injustice against the right of the unborn, innocent and harmless child to life, having nothing to do concerning the circumstances of its conception.

Unless this twin towers of evil are urgently addressed by outlawing their practice in countries where they have been legalized, before they gain more acceptance in predominantly conservative nations, the world would not only face progressive extinction, but also will be thrown into untold ethical and moral crisis.

To defend these twin evils as a legal right is to turn a moral wrong into a civil right, What, we need is not a sexual liberation movement but a moral revolution movement, aimed at making this world a better place, than it is now.

  • Homosexuality: Police, community declare man wanted

A  42-year-old man, Abel Igbinosa, who was charged to court for openly engaging in homosexuality, has been declared wanted by the police for allegedly jumping bail.

Abel is also wanted by the elders of his native community in Edo State to appease the deities whom, they claimed, he had defiled by his unacceptable sexual behaviour.

Meanwhile, Abel Igbinosa’s story is as pathetic as it is bizarre. His lawyers claim he is a victim of foreign indoctrination which runs counter to the norms and culture of the land.

Igbinosa had lived in Italy before he returned to Nigeria. As an adult, he found that homosexuality was a normal way of life while resident in Italy where he became a self professed gay.

Sometime in November 2012, he was publicly attacked while on a weekend picnic with one of his alleged partners. His partner was badly tortured while Igbinosa was immediately handed over to the police.

He has also been attacked and beaten up on several occasions by members of his community and subsequently arrested and tortured by the police because of his sexual preference.

He was eventually charged to court for engaging in homosexual acts which is punishable by law. With a possible jail term hanging on his neck if finally convicted, Igbinosa’s problem has been further compounded as the Odionwere (community head) has also declared him a persona non grata and an outcast for failure to appease the gods of the land.

  • Group condemns homosexuality on campuses

The Nigerian Fellowship of Evangelical Students NIFES, a faith-based indigenous non- governmental organisation and student ministry has condemned homosexuality in tertiary institutions.

The National Director of the group, Bala Usman, addressed reporters in Abuja in preparation for the Mission’s conference tagged ‘WITNESS’ with the theme: The Ambassadors,” schedule for October 28 – November 3, 2013.

Bala, however, praised the National Assembly for standing against homosexuality.

He said: “We are in no doubt that our youths are facing crisis today. Crisis of what to believe in, crisis of confidence, crisis of capacity, crisis of unemployment, crisis of faith in themselves and in our country, crisis of ungodliness, crisis of unpatriotism, crisis of ignorance, crisis of morality and warped social values.

“It is in line with this that NIFES strongly commends the National Assembly for prohibiting homosexualism and lesbianism through the passage of the gay rights Bill in spite of external pressures.

“NIFES, particularly, wishes to commend the Senate President’s position on this matter and are glad for the strong courage displayed in this regards. NIFES has strongly campaigned and stood against gayism and lesbianism which seek to ravage our youth and their future. To us this is the zenith of immorality and immoral impunity which should not and never be allowed in our nation. We therefore call on the president not to delay his assent to that Bill.”

  • Homosexuality, America and the end of humanity

Homosexuality, America and the end of humanity

That is why God let go of them and let them do all these evil things, so that even their women turned against God’s natural plan for them and indulged in sex sin with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sex relationships with women, burned with lust for each other, men doing shameful things with other men, and, as a result, getting paid within their own souls with the penalty they so richly deserved. Romans Ch. 1 vs 26-27 (TLB)

Woe alas, the end has begun for humanity! America is capitulating and falling. Madmen are chasing away the specialists; deviants are finally winning the battle. Woe alas, the world stands on its head. Come June, the United States Supreme Court (USSC) will decide whether same-sex (SS) marriage could become the norm in the U.S. With about 58 per cent of Americans already loving SS union; with a serving president endorsing it; with bishops and archbishops proudly being gay and consecrating ‘strange’ wed locks, and some influential countries around the world already practicing it, the USSC would be hard put not to give its nod to it; if only to rest the matter once and for all.

THE FINAL FALL: Man has finally fallen from all grace. Across the ages, the battle between good and evil has raged. Homosexuality, one of the greatest human deviant behaviors had been with man from Adam. Man had fought it, consigning it to the closet for a long time but it refuses to be still. For instance, just 40 years ago, homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Today, it is considered a normal sexual behavior and a human right issue. There are over 600,000 SS families in the U.S with about 115,000 of them raising children.

Today’s licentious world has convinced itself that deviant behavior is okay and acceptable; it has allowed maladjusted people to have their way. They have allowed people who need help, who need prayers and divine intervention to reclaim their checkered lives to take control of the driver’s seat of the human race. It is most aptly captured in the Yoruba saying: k’afi ibaje se ayo – to glory in rottenness. As humanity wallows in rottenness and extreme carnality, they are far removed from the divine and the glorious. If our permissive world accepts that it is a man’s right to sleep with another man, by the same token, shouldn’t it be his right and sexual preference to choose to sleep with his dog, goat, cow and chicken? And why should anybody worry when strange diseases begin to ravage the world and seek to exterminate humanity? If we accept lesbianism and homosexuality, we must by the same token allow kleptomania, sadism and other deviant behaviours as norm and individual right.

GOD, NATURAL ORDER AND SOVEREIGN WILL: Is any surprised that humanity has come to this sorry pass? For many decades, the Western world has repudiated God. It has civilized ‘beyond’ God. The West has bred generations of anti-Gods; denizens who never attended church, who read no scriptures; who have grown old soulless and never reading a word of the Bible. They have bred spiritual zombies, vacuous people who are infuriated by the very concept of deity or religious codes. The world is filled with carnal beings groomed on dollars, flesh and individual freedom. They are wise by themselves and are gods unto themselves; whatever feels good is okay, whatever their feeble minds can justify is right.

Sometimes one wonders which god is referred to on the American dollar bill which proclaims, “In God we trust”. It must be the god of dollars.

But God is God, his sovereign will is written and will be fulfilled in due time. Empires will rise and fall; superpowers will thrive and wane all according to his long-stated design. People of God must not despair but must remain in fervent prayers for the lost souls who have deviated from His natural order and are sold to the enemy.

Let us close with the exchange between God and Elijah as recorded in the letter of Apostle Paul to the Romans (Ch. 11 vs. 2-4) in which the prophet Elijah confronted God lamenting that the Jews had killed all the Prophets and torn down God’s alters. Elijah even claimed that he was the only prophet left in all the land who still loved God and he lived with the imminent danger of being killed. And God replied Elijah: “No, you are not the only one left. I have seven thousand others besides you who still love me and have not bowed down to idols!” God’s elect will stand in the gap and His sovereign will only, will be done.

    FEEDBACK:

Re: Trouble with Things Fall Apart

Mr. Osuji I have just read through your article on page 22 of The Nation (April 5, 2013). I must admit that you are well aware of the ethnic politics that is ravaging us and your style of writing is living / alive. Please keep it up. Mrs. Fatoyinbo, 07030334456.

Steve I agree totally with you that the trouble with TFA is the trouble with Nigeria. How could anyone equate Wole Soyinka with Chinua Achebe? Soyinka’s writings are esoteric while Achebe is lucid and devoid of jargons. If Achebe were to be a Yoruba, he would have been in the exalted horizon of literary pantheons. From Prof. S.O. Aghalino, UNILORIN, 08054896603

My dear EXPRESSO Steve, God bless you on your write-up on Things Fall Apart. Your ink will never run dry – 08033100848

Steve, on The Trouble with Things Fall Apart, I owe you a drink. From Ezeugo , Abuja, 08037003315

Steve, the Achebe vs. Soyinka controversy is unfortunate. With or without laurels, both are African literary icons. Achebe was a great novelist who treasured simplicity like the romantics. Essentially, WS is a great dramatist. He takes much interest in the literary approach of the post-modernists, the celebrators of obscurity. But WS had the Jero Plays and A Play of Giants presented in a simple language. A simple language does not diminish the greatness of a literary work, it enhances it. Each writer should be seen within the limits of his genre. From Kamaldeen, Ilorin.

Good work Steve. Talking about the Nobel, they seem to enjoy the writer who massages the Whiteman’s ego and WS played along and got the reward. Achebe had no time to massage anyone’s ego even for the Nobel. For instance, while in Death and the King’s Horse man, the author warns the reader not to hold the White man responsible for the wrongs in the play, Achebe stated clearly that our past was not one long night of savagery from which Europeans acting on God’s behalf, delivered us. He demonstrated it twice in the case of the National Award. From Prof. Emeka Nwabueze, fmr Dean. Fac. Of Arts, UNN.
