Huawei hosts financial service industry gala in Lagos

Leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT), infrastructure, and smart devices, Huawei has hosted a Financial Service Industry Gala in Lagos, bringing together key stakeholders from Nigeria’s banking, regulatory, technology, and economic policy communities to discuss the role of digital infrastructure in the financial services sector.

The event, held in Lagos, featured senior Huawei executives who outlined the company’s strategy for supporting financial institutions through digital transformation.

In his opening address, the Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Nigeria, Chris Lu, said the company is focused on redefining how technology supports modern financial services, noting that digital systems are now central to institutional competitiveness and operational efficiency.

The Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Global Digital Finance, Jason Cao, described Nigeria as a strategic and fast-growing market for digital technology. He said Huawei’s sustained investment in the country is aimed at supporting long-term growth by providing solutions that help financial institutions respond to evolving customer expectations and regulatory demands.

A major highlight of the gala was the launch of Huawei’s local cloud infrastructure in Nigeria by Roc Bai, Managing Director of Huawei Cloud Nigeria. He unveiled the Huawei Local Cloud and Huawei Cloud Stack 8.6, explaining that the platforms provide secure infrastructure, data localisation, and advanced cloud capabilities tailored to the needs of Nigerian financial institutions and enterprises.

Huawei’s Director of Financial Services Industry, Glarie Gao, expressed appreciation to customers and partners for their continued support, expressing optimism about achieving greater milestones in the next phase of the company’s growth.

Beyond technology, discussions at the gala also examined Nigeria’s broader macroeconomic environment. Olusegun Zaccheaus, Partner and Economist at PwC, presented an overview of the country’s economic outlook, stressing that technology has moved beyond being a business enabler to becoming a core component of business models, driving productivity, innovation, and growth.

A presentation by a representative of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria outlined the stages of economic reform and assessed Nigeria’s current position. The speaker explained that following policy changes such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate liberalization, Nigeria has moved into what was described as the inflection and stabilization phases of reform. While these reforms initially led to rising inflation and other macroeconomic pressures, recent indicators suggest gradual improvement.

The presentation noted that inflation had declined to about 16 percent by October, while exchange rate stability had improved, offering greater predictability for investors and businesses. Improved government revenue performance was also highlighted, alongside expectations of further fiscal gains in 2026.

Nonetheless, the speaker cautioned that inflation remains elevated and that high interest rates continue to constrain business borrowing.

Looking ahead, the analysis identified debt sustainability, election-year fiscal pressures, geopolitical developments, domestic security, and capital market growth as key factors likely to shape Nigeria’s economic performance in 2026. Economic growth of between 4 and 4.2 percent was projected, driven by sustained reforms and increased capital market activity, particularly if major enterprises are listed.

Several sessions at the gala also addressed artificial intelligence and its expanding role in financial services and daily life, with speakers highlighting its potential to improve efficiency, data analysis, and customer service.

The event concluded with the presentation of Best Trainee Awards to outstanding participants from financial institutions. The award recipients were UBA, Access Bank, Fidelity Bank, GTBank, and NIBSS.

  • T2, Huawei strike core network modernisation deal

T2, Huawei strike core network modernisation deal

Nigeria’s fourth mobile network operator (MNO), T2 has signed a strategic partnership with Huawei, a global leader in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), to modernize its core network infrastructure.

This agreement is coming as T2 posted its first gain of the year in July adding 290,601 new subscribers in the month, spurred by its recent infrastructure sharing deal with the largest MNO in the country, MTN Nigeria.

This came as the first monthly subscriber gain in nearly a year for the carrier that had experienced steady decline in its customer base over the years due to obsolete network equipment that took a toll on its service quality.

For July, T2 also emerged as the only operator out of the four MNOs that gained subscribers in a month that saw MTN, Airtel, and Globacom shed weight.

The T2-Huawei infrastructure modernization deal signals the start of a sweeping transformation, one that underscores T2’s renewed ambition to reclaim its position as a leading, innovative force in the industry.

It comes at a pivotal time, as the company transitions to a refreshed corporate and consumer identity, setting the stage for a new era of growth and competitiveness.

The partnership will draw on Huawei’s world-renowned technological expertise to completely overhaul T2’s core infrastructure, enhancing its capacity, resilience, and security. But this initiative goes far beyond a technical upgrade, it is the cornerstone of a multi-phase, company-wide investment strategy aimed at building a future-ready network, designed to meet and exceed the evolving expectations of Nigerian consumers.

During a high-level signing ceremony held in Lagos, senior execs from both companies gathered to mark the beginning of this transformational journey.

Representing T2 were its Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe; Chief Operating Officer, John Vasikaran; Chief Technical & Information Officer, Ayodeji Adedeji; Vice President, Corporate Services, Ifeloju Alakija,; and Vice President, Brands and Communication, Seni Ogunkola.

The global original equipment manufacturer, Huawei, was represented by the CEO, Huawei Nigeria Carrier Business, Jiang Junyong.

“This agreement is more than a contract — it’s a catalyst. Huawei has been a trusted partner throughout our journey, and this next chapter reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and excellence. With Huawei by our side, we’re not just upgrading our network, we’re future-proofing it,” Banigbe said.

The core modernization project is part of T2’s four-phase strategic roadmap: Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth. This structured approach signals a deliberate and focused effort to restore the company’s competitive edge and build a more agile, customer-centric network.

Echoing Banigbe’s vision, Junyong emphasized the strength of the alliance, saying Huawei is proud to support T2’s bold transformation journey.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence. We’re bringing world-class solutions to help T2 build a resilient, high-performance core network that will support next-generation services and long-term growth,” Junyong said.

With this collaboration, T2 is poised to significantly expand its network coverage, capacity, and resilience nationwide. More importantly, it marks the first of several bold initiatives aimed at restoring the company’s market leadership, revitalizing its service portfolio, and delivering a digital experience that truly resonates with modern Nigerian consumers.

The core network modernization is expected to reach completion in the coming months, firmly anchoring T2’s resurgence in a fast-moving, tech-driven future.

During the period under review, active mobile subscriptions dipped to 169.1 million from 171.5 million recorded in June this year.

The decline was driven by the losses recorded by the three MNOs but most significantly by Airtel, which lost 2.4 million subscriptions in the month.

The telco’s active subscriptions plunged to 56.5 million in July from 58.9 million it recorded in June.

MTN also lost 106,345 subscribers in the month, which brought its database to 89.1 million in July, while Globacom’s subscriptions declined by 143,701 to 20.7 million.

MTN remained the dominant player in the market with 52.70per cent of the market share, while maintained the second position with 33.42per cent share.

Globacom’s market share stood at 12.26per cent, while 9mobile’s maintained its distant 4th position despite the gains recorded with 1.61per cent of the market share.

With the decline in actively connected lines recorded by the operators, the country’s teledensity, which measures the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area, also declined to 78.11per cent in July from 79.22per cent recorded in June.

According to NCC, the teledensity is calculated based on a population estimate of 216 million.

It would be recalled that on July 3rd, 9mobile (as it then was known) and MTN Nigeria officially announced a national roaming deal approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The deal allows customers of 9mobile will be able to access network service anywhere MTN’s network is available across the country.

Prior to the deal, the operator had suffered huge subscriber loss as its network deteriorated due to lack of funds to build infrastructure.

With the national roaming deal, 9mobile subscribers will now be able to make calls, send SMS, and access data through MTN Nigeria’s infrastructure in areas where 9mobile’s network doesn’t exist or is unreliable, enabling the telco’s sustainability.

Instead of building out its own infrastructure, which is capital-intensive, 9mobile can now plug directly into MTN’s far-reaching network.

The deal and that of Huawei will certainly mark a game-changer for T2 as they will allow the MNO to leap toward broader network coverage and digital inclusion across the country.

  • Inside Huawei’s Lagos Innovation Hub

    Inside Huawei’s Lagos Innovation Hub

Participants of the MTN Nigeria sponsored Media Innovation Programme (MIP-4) at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University recently visited Huawei’s 5G innovation hub in Lagos on a study tour. Assistant News Editor, Precious Igbonwelundu, reports that the immersive experience showcased a first-hand view of the infrastructure powering Nigeria’s digital economy.

From the moment you walk in, you’re invited to experience technology not as abstract, but as local and practical solutions to multifaceted socio-economic, security and governance challenges plaguing the Nigerian society. Interactive displays show real-time dashboards of smart cities; technology powered agro-businesses and immersive AI solutions.

Welcome to the Huawei Innovation hub in Lagos, where demo corners highlight how cloud storage and solar-powered connectivity can support rural healthcare systems.

Situated by the towering Intercontinental Hotel in Victoria Island, the innovation hub spanning 4,000 square metres boasts over 850 engineers who work shifts for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to support key sectors including telecoms, finance, power, and transportation.

Though a humid afternoon in Lagos, the air inside the centre buzzed with cool, quiet energy that conveyed subtle, strategic and intentional messages: this is the nexus for co-creation, capacity building and technology incubation.

As soon as participants of the MIP-4 programme arrived at the centre, they were ushered into the demo area by a female Huawei representative in Nigeria, Ivy, who led the team to first sign against their names on large yellow board before proceeding to give a brief presentation of the evolution of OEM from a technology provider to a collaborator for national digital transformation.

A remarkable feature of the centre is its connection to Huawei’s AI-ready local cloud infrastructure, which was launched in Nigeria in late 2024 and the Tier 3+ certified data center which supports more than 30 local cloud services and addresses the critical issues of data sovereignty and latency.

Also witnessed was the improved router and antenna technology, as well as Huawei’s AI-powered video software, which generates personalised high-definition video clips within a minute using 5G technology.

After a brief tour of the hub and exhibition of some of the services already being rendered across sectors in Nigeria, participants were marched into a lecture hall where Mr. Gavin Geng Xiaoyan, Director of Solution Sales\CTO, Huawei, made a presentation on the transformative potential of 5G and cloud infrastructure. He also spoke on the firm’s operations in the country and future projections.

“Trust for reliability and speed is why Huawei localised cloud services in Nigeria…This centre is designed to be a space where technology meets the specific needs of Nigeria,” he said.

Xiaoyan said the hub was powering services such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, smart energy, and digital infrastructure, all tailored to local industry verticals such as education, agriculture, energy, public services, and finance.

    Gains for Nigeria

In a country where sensitive data from banking records to citizen identification have long been hosted offshore, the arrival of a secure, scalable local cloud opens new possibilities. Fintechs, edtechs, and health-tech startups now have the infrastructure to scale securely without incurring the heavy costs of building their own backend systems or relying on foreign providers.

Huawei’s engineers at the hub demonstrate these capabilities with clarity. Visitors can interact with live use cases, from real-time analytics for microfinance firms to IoT-powered smart classrooms for rural education and solar-powered sustainable electricity for local communities, internally displaced persons camps, to boost the economy.

Panels simulate how base stations and rural health centers can run on hybrid energy systems combining solar and lithium battery storage.

“You cannot separate connectivity from energy. In off-grid communities, no matter how advanced your tech is, without power it means nothing.

“This energy-tech integration underscores Huawei’s dual focus: digital inclusion and energy resilience. By deploying solar-powered ICT hubs and integrating clean power with data infrastructure, the company is helping lay the groundwork for sustainable connectivity in Nigeria’s most underserved areas,” said a member of Huawei staff during a demo of the smart energy solutions.

Closely linked to the centre’s infrastructure is Huawei’s talent development mission which has seen over 20,000 Nigerian youths trained in ICT skills through the Huawei ICT Academy and Seeds for the Future programmes in the past few years.

Perhaps, the most defining trait of the innovation centre is its design for co-creation as designated spaces for solution workshops, training sessions, and co-design consultations were visible. This enables start-ups, government agencies, private companies, and academic researchers to bring their problems or ideas to the table for solutions to be created in a joint environment.

With this collaborative spirit drawing interests from reputable institutions of learning and innovation hubs, the company said it is open for partnership with government agencies like the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to align innovations with national priorities.

The Huawei Innovation Centre in Lagos represents more than just an investment; it’s a signal that the next chapter of Nigeria’s digital transformation won’t be written by foreign firms building distant solutions, but by indigenous minds solving local problems with world-class infrastructure.

The event wrapped up with a certificate presentation to the participants and a dinner hosted by MTN’s Chief Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobechukwu Okigbo.

He charged the fellows to use their voices to bridge the knowledge gap between telecom providers and the Nigerian public, especially around the challenges and responsibilities that come with operating a modern digital network.

He added that to achieve that, Nigeria would require to catalyze private sector investment in the manufacturing assembly of all the renewable equipment in the country.

He lamented that one key thing that may hinder that is the availability of substandard or used equipment that keep coming into Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Aliyu said the private sector will require the assurance and the confidence that if they put in their money and build a manufacturing outfit in the manufacturing of photovoltaic panels or assembly, they would not be competing with people that import second-hand or substandard PV panels.

To address that, he said REA sought the support of Huawei and the Chinese government for the development of the simulation and standardization center.

He stressed that the center will help REA to sieve out all substandard and second-hand equipment, be it the PV panels or batteries.

Continuing, he said “A total of about 18 equipments have been provided under this MOU partnership by Huawei. We have oxylicon, power analyzer, multimedia, electronic load, AFCI generator, DC power, pyranometer, handler pyranometer, battery analyzer, micrometer, screw gauge, vernier caliper, tool kit, computers, idea hub, and printers.”

He said some of these equipment that Huawei provides to REA are first of their kind in this country.

Commending the relief the lab will be to REA, he said gone are the days solar panels were moved up and down for testing.

Aliyu noted added that the centre can now simulate the condition of the equipment remotely irrespective of their location and condition.

“But with this simulation center, which has been done to some of the equipment that has been donated to us by Huawei, we were able to simulate different green light conditions, different humidity, different temperature, that shows the different conditions of various environments we have in the country,” he said.

Continuing, he said, “A total of about 18 equipments have been provided under this MOU partnership by Huawei.

“The Smart Education facility allows for young students within the community to receive education remotely, with the teachers being in Abuja or any other part of the world, while  Healthcare delivery has been revolutionised through connected medical equipment that enables remote consultations between patients in Ibwa and doctors and specialists in urban-locations,” Roy said.

The site and all the equipment are powered by solar, thereby ensuring a clean environment and uninterrupted power supply, he said.

The project’s effectiveness was demonstrated during the launch.

The leader of the Isuanin Kura, Ibwa 2 Community, Chief Abubakar Bamaiyi, had a live medical consultation with a doctor in Abuja. Simultaneously, students at the local school were observed receiving an online video lesson from a teacher in Lagos, utilising equipment supplied by Huawei.

Globacom’s Head of Division for the Northwest, Mr. Kazeem Kaka, reinforced the company’s long-standing commitment to democratising communication.

“Since 2003, we have remained at the forefront of efforts to lower the barriers to connectivity—making telephony, internet, and data services more accessible and affordable for all Nigerians. Today’s launch reinforces that commitment,” he said.

The Managing Director of Huawei Nigerian Enterprises, Mr. Terrens Wu, expressed pride in his company’s participation in bringing connectivity, learning, and healthcare to rural communities through digital technology.

Huawei also donated 120 affordable smartphones to the community to further enhance access to telephony.
