    Husband to court: I beat my wife when she flouts my instructions

    An estranged husband, Clifford Monday, on Wednesday admitted in an  Akure Customary Court that he only beat his wife, Bukola, whenever she flouted his instructions.

    Clifford made this known when he testified in a divorce petition filed by the wife.

    He told the the court that Bukola was the main cause of the misunderstanding they had in the union.

    He also admitted he destroyed his wife’s property, adding that his wife used tricks to extort money from him.

    Ealier, the petitioner, urged the court to dissolve the 11-year-old marriage for alleged constant beating, drunkenness, promiscuity and insensitivity to her.

    Bukola gave an instance when the respondent beat her during her second pregnancy to stupor and attempted to abort the pregnancy but her mother intervened.

    She said that the respondent always raised suspicion on all her movements, and had abandoned her and the three children of the marriage.

    The President of the court, Mr Ayodele Omotola, held that the evidences before the court showed there was no marriage between the two parties.

    Omotola noted that the court’s priority and consideration were on the products of the union.

    He, therefore, dissolved the union and ordered the respondent to pay N10,000 monthly to the court for the upkeep of the children.

    He further said that the respondent would be responsible for the education of the children.

    The president awarded custody of the children to the petitioner and gave the respondent unhindered access to the children.

    He said that both parties would be responsible for the medical and clothings of the kids. (NAN)

    “He has also written a letter of undertaking to be of good behaviour,’’ she said.

    The petitioner tendered the letter of undertaking in court as exhibit.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the letter was admitted by the court.

    The respondent denied the allegation of constantly fighting his wife and failing to take care of his family.

    He however admitted not paying the dowry.

    The president of the court, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, ruled that the plaintiff should monitor the respondent’s behaviour for three months to ascertain if he had changed.

    She also ordered that the man should enrol his children in school before the next adjourned date.

    Ojo adjourned the case to May 8 for report of settlement.

  • ‘Dissolve my 25-year-old marriage before my husband kills me’

    A housewife,Bose Okeiye, on Tuesday prayed an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court, Agodi-Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve her 25-year-old marriage to her  estranged husband, Augustine Okeiye, and safe her from an untimely death.

    Okeiye had approached the court seeking dissolution of the marriage which had produced five children, on the grounds that her husband was a threat to her life, not caring and irresponsible.

    She narrated how the defendant battered her to the extent that she had to undergo surgery while on admission in a hospital for two months.

    “I was on admission in a hospital for two months and had to undergo surgery because of my husband’s brutality and constant battering.

    “He neither checked on me nor did he pay my hospital bill throughout my period in the hospital.

    “Later, my family members asked why he refused to visit me in hospital and his response was that my father offended him.

    “My lord, I am tired of him; please dissolve this marriage before he kills me. I want to take care of my five children in good health,” she pleaded.

    The defendant (Augustine) was, however, not in court to defend the allegations leveled against him despite three letters of summons from the court.

    The court’s president, Chief Mukaila Balogun,  in his ruling said, “having gone through evidence presented by the complainant and considering the disrespect of the defendant toward the court, it is clear that there is no more love between the couple.”

    Balogun, therefore, dissolved the marriage and ordered that the first two children should be in the custody of the defendant while the remaining three children should be with their mother.

    He also ordered the defendant to pay N9,000 to his wife as monthly allowance for the upkeep of the three children. (NAN)

    “On several occasions, l caught him stealing from me after a hard day’s job.

    “We are not compatible, there is no peace of mind in the house. My husband drinks to stupor and misbehaves,” said Kofoworola, who urged the court to dissolve the marriage.

    She added:“He keeps checking my phones and monitoring my movements. He is also fetish and was always in possession of different charms.

    “When l got pregnant for our first child, he claimed l needed to follow him to their village for a
    particular festival so that l can give birth safely but I refused.

    “Sometimes l see charms under his pillow or mine which he claimed are for protection while he hides
    others in his pockets.

    “For me the marriage is over as there is no love lost between us again.”

    The petitioner also wants the respondent to be responsible for the children’s education and upkeep.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the respondent, the husband, was absent in court.

    In his ruling, the court’s President, Mr Phillips Williams, adjourned the case to April 4 for judgement. (NAN)

    A house wife, Fatimah Idris, pleaded with an Ilorin Area Court on Wednesday to dissolve the four year-old marriage between her and Wondi Idris over constant battery.

    The plaintiff, a residence of Sabo-line area, Ilorin asked the court to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Idris over battery and maltreatment.

    She told the court that her marriage was contracted in 2013 and had produced two children.

     “My husband always beat me to a state of unconsciousness whenever we had misunderstandings.

     “My lord, I want to end this marriage because I cannot continue to stay with a man who maltreat me and doesn’t care for my health,’’she said.

     The husband however said that he was surprised at the allegation levelled against him by his wife.

     Wondi told the court that he was not ready to divorce his wife, adding; “I still love my wife”.

     He therefore prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him settle the matter at home.

    The presiding judge, Mr Ibrahim AbdulKadri adjourned the case to March 20, for the defendant to enter defence.

    Mr Olakunle Babalola, 35, an umemployed graduate, is seeking help for his wife, who is down with cancer of the breast.
    Mrs Babalola Tolulope Taiwo, a twin and a 27- year-old final year undergraduate, has stopped school because of her condition.
    Babalola told The Nation that his wife needs assistance to enable her complete her treatment.
    Babalola told The Nation that she was diagnosed of breast cancer in 2014, a week after their wedding. “I noticed the lump on her left breast on our wedding night. Since then, both of us have been struggling to survive. The little money on me was used to commence laboratory tests and some palliative treatments. She had already become pregnant before the commencement of her first six courses of Chemotherapy at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja,” he said.
    Babalola continued: “God really helped her to keep the baby intact, despite the chemotherapy. She took the chemotherapy every three weeks for six months. After the chemotherapy, she was scheduled for mastectomy of the Lt (left) Breast. Afterwards, she was asked to do immunotherapy and histopathology. She did one of the tests; the other test of N50, 000 was not done due to lack of funds. During those times, my business crashed. Money stopped flowing in. That treatment lasted for about nine months.”
    Later, Tolulope started having re-occurrence of cancer, and this time very painful. She reported back at LASUTH, where another six courses of chemotherapy with some strong pain killers were prescribed.
    “She took the first, second, third, and fourth chemotherapy treatment. The consultant stopped giving her the drugs when she went for the fifth course because the drugs were not working for her. That was when a new course of diagnoses was recommended. “She started fresh diagnoses to determine the nature of the tissue and the type of cancer last November. This is both emotionally and financially draining,”Babalola bemoaned.
    Babalola took in a deep breath after narrating his ordeal, but emotion betrayed him. He said: “My people, the road has been rough. She is at Lakeshore Cancer Health Centre in Victoria Island (VI), Lagos, for further investigations and treatment. We need your help great people of Nigeria.
