    The late arrival of Nollywood star actress, Mercy Aigbe yesterday stalled the commencement of trial of her estranged husband, Olanrewaju Gentry before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court.

    Gentry is facing charges bordering on domestic violence offences for allegedly beating and inflicting injuries on his wife contrary to provisions of Protection Against Domestic Violence and Connected Purposes Law of Lagos State 2007.

    The estranged couple were scheduled to appear yesterday before Chief Magistrate Mrs Folakemi Davies- Abegunde.

    Gentry, appeared in court as early as 9 a.m yesterday dressed in a  white wool  buba and sokoto with a matching black and brown leather sandal to match and was cool in his composure all through.

    The applicant, Mercy Aigbe, was to tender before the court the medical report of the alleged domestic violence meted on her by her estranged husband.

    Gentry on the other hand, was to show cause why the restraining order  made April 28, 2017 that he should not come within a mile radius of his wife and their two children should not be made permanent by the court.

    Mercy had applied for the restraining order in line with sections 5(1), 1(3) and section 7(1) of Protection Against Domestic Violence and Connected Purposes Law 2007.

    Another matter before the family court, it learnt, bordered on the custody of their two children.

    At about 11.05 a.m. yesterday, when the court clerk first called their matter , the couple were not within air shot.

    When the matter was called again at 11.25 am, only Gentry responded and went inside the chamber of the Chief Magistrate with his counsel.

    He came out about 18 minutes later at about 11.43 a.m. and immediately departed the court premises with his counsel.

    Mercy surfaced minutes after, dressed in a white flowing gown dotted with pictures of apple fruit in red and green.

    She came in accompanied by her counsel, Uche Ani and proceeded into the Chief Magistrate’s chamber. They came out few minutes after, having obtained the date of adjournment of the matter.

    Mercy later drove away from the court premises in her black coloured Acura SUV car marked KSF 283 EM at 12.05 p.m.

    Chief Magistrate Davies-Abegunde has adjourned the matter till June 28.

She said that, Wahabi, her husband for 23 years, was also threatening her life. “My husband left scars on my body as he always bites me whenever we fight. “My husband will not leave me until he sees blood coming out from the wound, I have scars all over my body as proof of his abuse.

    ” The petitioner said that apart from the bites, her husband was also threatening her life. “Wahabi is always threatening to kill me by suffocating me to death with a pillow. “Because of his threat, I ran away from the house I built and relocated just to save my life. “Last month, he came to my shop, threatening to kill me; he smashed a beer bottle on the ground and wanted to stab me on my neck. “I used my hand to dodge it and the bottle cut me on my right hand, blood was gushing out but for the quick intervention of neighbours who rushed me to the hospital, I could have died.

    ” The mother of four presented as exhibit recording of her husband’s alleged threat, and picture of her injured hand. The woman also accused Wahidi of attempting to appropriate her house. “My husband wanted to sell my house, he approached land grabbers asking for the original document of my house. “The people called me to know if I was the one that sent my husband to come for the document. “My husband drinks to stupor and smokes Indian hemp, after which he usually loses self control.” She begged the court to dissolve the union, saying she was no longer in love with her husband. “I live every minute of my life in fear.

    Save me from the cruel hands of my husband, I have suffered so much in silence.” Wahabi, on the other hand, said that his wife was adulterous and having extra marital affairs. “I caught my wife inside her shop with a man cutting his nail, immediately I entered the man quickly stood up and left,” he said. The 47-year-old transporter said that he has stopped smoking weeds and drinking alcoholic for some weeks. The respondent said that he never threatened to kill his wife but that he stabbed her by mistake. He made a fervent plea to the court not to dissolve the marriage, claiming that he was still in love with his wife. The president of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola adjourned the case till July 25, for judgment.

  • Woman kills self, husband in Kano

    A newly-wedded woman has burnt herself and her husband to death at their 54 Middle Road, Sabon Gari, Kano, residence.

    She was said to have died moments after while the husband died at an undisclosed hospital.

    Sources said the woman reportedly set fire to a keg of petrol after receiving a call on her husband’s phone from an unidentified lady, about 12am yesterday.

    A co-tenant, Mr. Emmanuel Okorie, who identified the late husband as Emeka, said the couple hailed from Anambra State.

    The couple tied the knot five weeks ago at the village and the woman carried a seven months’ pregnancy. She joined the husband in Kano three weeks ago.

    Okorie, who could not say whether the alleged phone conversation led to the dispute, said Emeka confided in him that his mother imposed the woman on him.

    He added that it took the intervention of the men of the fire service to put off the fire.

    Police spokesman Musa Magaji Majiya said investigations have begun into the matter.

    “The incident resulted from a fire outbreak in a four-storey building at No. 54 Middle Road, Sabon Gari, Fagge Local Government. When the fire started, the woman’s husband tried to rescue her through the window.

    “When all attempts to rescue her failed, the woman ran into the toilet and shut the door. She suffocated to death while the husband sustained severe burns. A co-tenant also died,” Majiya said.

    The bodies have been deposited at an undisclosed morgue by policemen from Nomansland Division.

    Suspected killers have murdered a family of six – husband, wife and four children- in a dawn attack in their home at Atiba, Odogbolu, Ogun State.
    It was not clear last night what caused the killing of the man identified as
    Sheik Yusuf Abdulsalam Tanimola, his wife and four children.
    The Nation learnt two of the children were two-year-old twins.
    Neighbours were shocked to see the victims in a pool of blood, a source said.
    Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said he was yet to get the victims’ names, adding: “They were killed overnight.”
    He said the divisional police officers in Odogbolu and neighbouring towns have been mobilised to the victims’ home with the operatives of the Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad (FSARS) and the Homicide to unravel the motive behind the killing.

    A Nigerian, Tunde Adepega on holiday in the United States with his seven-month pregnant wife, Oluwayemisi and two children has died in a metro bus.
    The wife who has two daughters aged two and eight, had barely spent 12 hours with her husband when he was picked up dead.
    The late Adepegba, a computer systems analyst, suffered a suspected heart attack while inside a metro bus in Annapolis area of Maryland and died with no help until the bus driver got to a final stop and came for him.
    The late Adepegba’s burial will cost about $10,000, which the wife does not have. A gofundme account has been set up for her husband burial.
    A deputy editor with THISDAY newspaper, Olawale Olaleye, who has been part of the fundraiser, wrote on his facebook wall: “This is no good news but a time I need the Nigerian in us to act true to type. Sadly, he left behind a pregnant wife. It is such a pathetic situation. But we can’t go on and on brooding over what we can’t change. This is an appeal for his burial, which is a bit expensive in the U.S and of course, whatever is left of this will be given to the pregnant wife.”

    Gbayunren area of atan in ado-odo/ota local government area of ogun state, was thrown into mourning after lightning allegedly struck dead a celestial church’s pastor’s wife, fausat.

    Fausat and her husband, olorunwa, were in bed at the church which also served as their residence on april 4, when she was killed by the lightning at about 11 p.m. The lightning also destroyed valuables in their residence.

    Also affected in the lightning strike was olorunwa, who allegedly walked with a slight stoop for some days before he later regained his strength. Sources attributed the bizarre to the wrath of sango ( god of lightning) on wrongdoers. ”Lightning does not strike or kill anyone except such person has done evil or stole something from another person.

    Lightning is usually invoked by sango worshippers or priest to punish thieves in yoruba communities, hence, the woman’s death might be more than meet the eyes.” The deceased has since been buried, but building where she lived with her husband was seal has been sealed by community leaders until the completion of traditional rites being carried out to cleanse or prevent similar disaster in the community.

    Our correspondent who visited the community noticed that the deceased’s residence has been barricaded by community leaders to prevent movement in and out of the building. One of the elders of the community, adeyinka awode, who asked not to be named told the nation that the incident was a mystery. ‘’We are still startled by the unfortunate incident because it has never happened in this ancient community.

    The celestial pastor has been living in this community for over 20 years now, but he does not interact with the leadership of the community. ‘’The mysterious incident might have been caused by some diabolical forces and it is quite sad that the woman died a gruesome death.’’

    The Ogun State Police Command has rescued a housewife, Mrs Obiageli Ajaero, who was battered and chained to the family generator for over 24 hours by her husband, Ifeanyi Obiageli.

    The Nation gathered that Operatives from the Sagamu division of the Command who got wind of the woman’s ordeal hurried to the home of the Ajaero at Ewooluwo – Sagamu in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state, and rescued her.

    The Command Police Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a release to The Nation, said Ifeanyi Ajaero( 37) has been arrested for fastening his wife, Obiageli(28) to a “Generator set till day break after she has been seriously battered.”

    “The suspect who is a member of the already disbanded merchant Navy used an hand cuff to chain his wife who has become so weak as a result of serious beating from the wicked husband.

    “The people in the neighborhood, who has been witnessing frequent beating of the wife by the suspect alerted the police of the latest happening consequent upon which the DPO Shagamu SP Aduroja Moses led his men to the scene, rescued the victim and got the suspect arrested.

    ” On interrogation, he admitted chaining the woman to generator, but he claimed that his action is for self defence,” he stated.

    According to Oyeyemi, the Commissioner of police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who described the action of the suspect as act of wickedness, has transfered the case to the Anti human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Investigation and Intelligence Department (SIID) for more investigation and prosecution.

    A Grade II Customary court in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of Delta State, has ended a 24-year-old marriage, after 42-year-old wife raised the alarm over battering, violent behavior and vitriolic temper of her husband.
    “Please separate us, before he will kill me, and grant me the custody of our three children,” Mrs Ese Akpronor told the court, which was presided over by Chief Umokoro Akpormedaye.
    She told the court that her husband, Mr Obukowho Peter, took pleasure in battering and had stopped caring for the family.
    Ese, who apparently married her estanged husband when she was 18, accused him of “battery, violent behavior, quick provocation and lack of care and attention” for her and her children from the marriage.
    She insisted that she could no longer tolerate the attitude of the husband, who she was married with for 24 years old and blessed with three beautiful children, aged 20, 15, 12 years.
    “My husband is very violent by nature and is fond of beating me. He used to fight me and give me merciless beating of my life. There was a day he beat me to the point of coma and neighbours came to rescue me from his hand.
    “I believe he does not love me anymore, that is the reason he is acting like that.
    The husband (Mr. Obukowho) did not appear, in spite of several summons from the Court.
    The Court President Chief Umokoro Akpormedaye, in his judgment, dissolved the marriage, saying that all attempts at reconciling the couple proved abortive.
    The President referred the plaintiff to the welfare department of the state to decide who the children should live with.
    Umukoro said that the dissolution document would be sent to Mr. Obukowho to let him know the decision of the court.
