    • Investigation Bureau begins probe of incident involving Flint Aero
    • Power Minister Adelabu in good spirits, says aide

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said yesterday that it had commenced investigation into the circumstances that led to the crash landing of a chartered aircraft whose passengers included the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

The HS 125 aircraft operated by Flint Aero with registration number 5N-AMM, crash-landed in Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday evening.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that the airport does not have the requisite Instrument Landing System (ILS) calibrated for flight operations for the aerodrome.

Industry experts are worried about the parlous state of air navigation equipment at airports across the country, describing it as a threat to air safety.

Speaking at the Aviation Stakeholders’ Forum yesterday, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, disclosed that the ILS at many airports are not working.

Confirming the state of facilities at Ibadan Airport, a senior official of NAMA said the aerodrome had no ILS.

In his remarks, the Director General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Musa Nuhu, said most of the airport facilities do not meet the minimum international requirements.

In his remarks, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo berated the National Airports Management Agency (NAMA) for its obsolete and inadequate air navigation facilities.

He said the Federal Government was getting concerned about the state of air navigation equipment at airports, saying many pending contracts involving obsolete equipment by NAMA would be cancelled.

Keyamo said the accident involving the aircraft could be associated with poor landing equipment by NAMA.

Worried by the development, Keyamo said the Federal Government has evolved measures to ensure proper coordination among the agencies.

Part of the measures, Keyamo said, would to ensure that areas of overlapping of functions among agencies are streamlined.

To resolve the myriad of challenges affecting the industry, Keyamo said experts and industry players will meet soon to draw a roadmap for the sector.

The private jet, which also had some of the minister’s aides on board, was said to have departed Abuja Airport for Ibadan at about 6:41pm and crash-landed in a bush close to the runway of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport while trying to land at about 7:21pm.

It was gathered that all the three cabin crews and seven passengers on board were rescued from the damaged aircraft.

A preliminary report on the incident issued on Saturday by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) noted that the aircraft was still in the bush at runway 22.

“At about 0825hrs of 03/11/2023, an aircraft with registration number 5N-AMM that conveyed the incumbent Minister of Power, AbdulWaheed Adebayo Adelabu, and his entourage crash-landed along runway 22 and skid off the runway into a nearby bush.

“The control tower reported on radio that he lost communication with the just landed aircraft and immediately called on the ARFFS, the AVSEC and other needed airport officials reported almost immediately to the scene.

“The 3 cabin crews and the 7 Passengers were all rescued from the damaged aircraft.

“All efforts to get details from the pilot proved abortive.

“Also at the scene were the NAF airport commandant and his team.

“As at the time of filing this report, the aircraft was still in the bush at runway 22 while the security personnel of both AVSEC, ARFFS, Airport Safety team and NAF team were on standby for cover,” the report said.

NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Dr. James Odaudu, said the probe by the body would unravel the cause of the accident.

The aircraft operated by Flint Short Aero had established radio communication with the Control Tower of Ibadan Airport at about 18.56 hours seeking extension, which was granted by personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) before the aircraft crew descended for landing.

The aircraft, sources hinted, landed short of the threshold with about 50 metres.

Sources at the airport hinted that investigators of the NSIB were already on ground at the site of the accident to obtain first hand information on the immediate and remote causes of the crash.

The Nation investigation revealed that the airport runway was shut down in the early hours of yesterday on account of the accident.

Hundreds of passengers, it was learnt, were stranded at the airport, unable to connect to their destinations because of the accident.

Adelabu in good spirits, says aide

Adelabu yesterday allayed fears about his safety following Friday’s incident near the Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State.

A source close to the Minister told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that Adelabu was in good spirits and not perturbed by the incident.

NAN reports that the private aircraft which had the minister and some of his aides had crash-landed near the airport late Friday evening.

”The Minister feels the incident is not something to worry about. It was actually a minor thing, and that is how he has taken it,” an aide of the Minister, who asked to stay anonymous, said.

He told NAN further that the Minister was particularly not worried by the incident because it did not involve any of the passengers leaving with any injury.

”Everyone on board the aircraft when the incident happened actually alighted without any problem, and we have no cause to worry,” the aide said.

NIS calls for improved security over killing of survey technician in Ibadan

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has condemned the murder of a survey technician by suspected ritualists in the Moniya area of Ibadan at the weekend, describing it as ‘barbaric.’

The institution, in a statement on Tuesday, October 24, said though the murder victim was not a registered surveyor, it expressed shock over his beheading by some ritualists and called for improved security around bushy areas in communities where surveyors undertake their work.

It read in part: “Though the deceased was not a Registered Surveyor, and definitely not an NIS member, we are touched by his most gruesome murder, particularly with his beheading by the heartless criminals who are suspected to have killed him for ritual. We pray to God to give the family the fortitude to bear this huge loss.

“Information available to the NIS confirmed that the deceased was a survey technician/draughtsman until his death.

“The NIS in Oyo State commends the Oyo State Police Command for apprehending his suspected killers. We expect that the command will build on this success by diligently prosecuting the suspects.

“The NIS in Oyo State hereby calls on the government to provide adequate security for its members across the state so we can undertake our work in a safe environment. We urge all security agencies to join hands and work with community leaders in strengthening security around bushy areas where Surveyors mostly work. Security agencies should further publicise their contact telephone lines and other communication channels to make it easy for residents to contact them to volunteer useful information that can lead to the prevention of crimes and arrest of suspected criminals.”

Declare Naira Marley, Sam Larry wanted over Mohbad’s death, group tells Police

A human rights advocacy group, Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), has urged security agencies to declared Afeez Fashola also known as Naira Marley and Samson Erinfolabi Balogun popularly known as Sam Larry wanted for the role they allegedly played in the sudden death of Ilerioluwa Aloba also known as MohBad

Many people accused the duo of having connection with the death of the singer although the allegation has not been established.

A statement by SPANCI President, Com. Yemi Bello urged the Federal Government to also confiscate the properties of the duo.

He urged government and security agencies to freeze their bank accounts and investigate their source of money and wealth.

The statement reads: “We, SPANCI, a human rights and Charity organization based in Nigeria commend the federal government, Lagos state government, IGP and everyone standing for Justice for Mohbad.”

“We also learnt that the alleged are no more in the country as we watched Sam Larry threatened Iyabo Ojo.”

“Should the police now wait till they kill Iyabo Ojo who is fighting for justice for Mohbad? If Mohbad alleged him and others for threat to his life and he eventually died and Sam Larry can openly say this against Iyabo Ojo assumably then he just confirmed the allegations on him and Naira Marley.”

“We want the federal government to Confisticate their properties and freeze their bank account and investigate their source of money and wealth.”

“We want them to immediately declare them wanted as we also say to government of those countries they are to deport them immediately to prove their innocence.”

“We want the federal government to immediately sack those NDLEA OFFICIALS that made Naira Marley NDLEA ambassador because he has been alleged of drug pushing and that some men of the NDLEA are working together with him under whose influence Mohbad was allegedly arrested, tortured and made to drink a water with a mixture of whitish substance which since then affected his health according to his speech in a viral video and people’s statement.”

“We want the government to constitute a neutral panel to investigate any officers involved as we reject the excuse of the Lagos police relying on Sam Larry’s counter petition to stop mohbad’s threat to life petition which made him die later.”

“We also recommend them for punishment for failing in their constitutional duties as this will prevent a reoccurrence of this in the future.”

Governor Seyi Makinde is reported to be considering making some areas in Agodi and Trans Amusement Park into housing estates. Over the last 30 years, we have informed each governor that Ibadan requires modern city public entertainment facilities like enlightening museums, aquaria, exhibitions of type Nigeria’s children abroad are availed of in Dubia, London, New York etc. Ibadan is awash with hundreds of amazing active and retired brains in and around intellectual, agricultural and scientific institutions with famous acronyms UI [with 75 departments], UCH [with 25 departments], LCU, KDU, FRIN, CRIN, IITA, IAR&T, all sadly out of reach of Ibadan’s two+million children yearning for an intellectual career exposure. As an engineer, will Governor Makinde stamp his visionary intellect on Ibadan by spearheading a legacy project – an Ibadan/Oyo State AQUARIUM/EXHIBITION/MUSEUM/ARTS/SCIENCE/TECH/MATHS EDUTAINMENT PARK by allocating and approving a building with cubicles 10-20 square metres for each one of the 100s of departments in the aforementioned institutions? Housing estates are good and needed. Inspiring youth inquisitiveness is necessary.

The murder and mutilation on duty of the distinguished DPO Bako Angbashim in Rivers State by cultists is a heinous crime and the subsequent offer of N100m bounty by Governor Fubara is justified. Many security personnel have died gallantly which requires an onslaught.

Nigeria has lost N16.25 trillion or N16,250,000,000,000 for 150,000,000 citizens i.e., approx. N125,000/person to oil theft. Imagine where our foreign reserves, education, health, transport and airlines etc. would be with that money?

How has Nigeria survived the trillion-naira+ theft annually? We survive because of the many millions of poor daily paid workers who, combined are a huge economic net countrywide as they feed their families daily from financial exchanges at their own level somewhat bolstered by the few crumbs falling from the rich man’s table which are mopped up mostly by immediate government hangers on. This economic net is very strong as testified by the fact that by doing the menial and low-level jobs they are servicing the essential supply chains supporting lives of every Nigerian from farm, village to villa, from playground to palace and from market to mansion and daily requiring daily transport to work, daily food for self and family, daily support services.

These are mostly menial jobs, the orange, bread, tea, akara, amala, newspaper viewing vendors who are all involved in the nationwide hidden-in-plain-sight micro-markets which together form a huge sub-bank cash economic safety net blanketing and comforting the ordinary citizenry asking the morning question just before dawn – ‘Can I feed myself/ my family today?’ and every night comforted again by saying ‘I fed myself/my family today’ as he and mostly she closes tired eyes at night. At that level, goals and achievements are daily not annually. And that daily income is destroyed immediately by a nationwide strike. Government office workers will probably get paid. Many workers are self-employed or employed by the private sector formal and informal. There will be no multi-million worker daily spending, demand or income on or from local transport, corner-corner feeding, semi-free readers’ association newspaper vendors.

That daily income will be zero for millions who will not get that money back unlike for salaried workers. Such strikes have a far greater impact on the daily paid workers than the monthly paid government and many private sector workers as the millions of daily paid workers are denied the income and will bring home zero income leaving millions of hungry mouths and minds at the level of sleepers on the street, under bridges, hamlets and low-income homes nationwide. Of course, many private businesses are also impacted as they provide food and transport services and the owners will often lay off or just not pay for ‘No Work Days’.

Living only day to day is a bitter reality of a lopsided economy and polity where politicians have arrogated to themselves an ‘unbelievable political sense of financial entitlement’ at the direct expense and loss of income for the generality of the citizenry. This is a serious greed-as-a-drug addictive-like disease which thrives because there are never any serious sustained exemplary punishments or countermeasures. The disease is totally resistant  to the usual treatment of calling out and public humiliation, which like Trumpian crimes, has been turned into self-promotional media frenzied circus activities especially when such accused find themselves in court.

Politicians have resisted appeals to cut their salaries and perks. Every iota of Nigerian common sense screams against such illegally legal treasury robbing miscalled ’entitlements’. How come such greed-driven politicians stiffen their backs and harden their hearts, when they see the quagmire of poverty caused by their greed-driven plenty in their palatial homes filled with fine vehicles paid for by depriving the poor? Why are most Nigerian politicians not moved to repent and offer services at costs equivalent to similar rates to those of politicians elsewhere in the world? Since politicians have used every subterfuge, legal, illegal, legally illegal and illegally legal to maintain their stranglehold on the Salary and Perks, and reject simple logic of poverty and needs of our country, we must suggest new strategies.

The major trade unions should come together and demand what we demand – that Salaries and Perks should be cut by 75% with a similar cut in pensions in proportion to what high grade level civil servants earn.

Indeed, major trade unions should during strike negotiations insist on politicians taking a 75% salary cut or only modest sitting allowances and one house chamber, preferably House of Representatives.

Ibadan Chief Gbolagade seeks unity among Mogajis

An Ibadan Chief, who is also the family head (Mogaji) of Lato Compound in Oke-Labo, Ibadan, Prof. Abiodun Gbolagade has called for unity among all Mogajis in Ibadanland.

He said Mogajis should set aside personal differences and work for the progress and development of Ibadanland.

Speaking in Ibadan at the Alarere residence of Olubadan of Ibadanland, Gbolagade stated that there shouldn’t be factions among the Mogajis who, according to him, represent various compounds and are all potential Olubadan.

According to him, the essence of being a Mogaji is to promote and protect integrity of Ibadan and make sure they work with Olubadan to actualise his policies.

He said: “Anybody creating faction within Ibadan Mogaji’s should rethink, if you have been giving opportunity to serve, all you need to do is to unite and engage in what can create developmental project for the people of Ibadanland.”

“Personally, I don’t see any faction. What we should be doing is to promote the integrity, development and security of Ibadanland. We must all work together to complement the developmental efforts of Olubadan of Ibadanland.”

While answering question regarding who is the higher between Mogaji and Baale, Gbolagade said that all Mogajis are potential Olubadan in the future and Baales cannot become Olubadan.

“There is no basis for any argument relating to seniority between Mogajis and Baales. A Mogaji is higher than Baale. Only Mogajis can rise to the position of Olubadan; Baales can’t become Olubadan,” he stressed.
