  • Be exclusive in breastfeeding, Oyo govt appeal to women

Oyo state government has appealed to pregnant women and nursing mothers in the state to ensure they embrace exclusive breastfeeding for their children for at least the first six months of their lives.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, while declaring open the 2018 World Breastfeeding Week, organized by the state government in collaboration with ANRiN, said newborns and children must be allowed to enjoy breast milk more than anything so as to have a good foundation for life.

The event held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Lanre Abass, explained that exclusive breastfeeding means that the breast milk given to children will not be complemented with water, fluid or any other foods.

Dr. Adeduntan added that, only 10 percent of the content of the breast milk is made up of nutrients for the baby while the remaining 90 percent is water, emphasising that there is no need to give the baby water or fluid after breast fed.

Dr. Adeduntan hinted that the first 1000 days of life that is, the period of pregnancy and first two years is very important, stressing that, this period is the time that the brain development is at maximum and if any parent miss breastfeeding the child at this period, they have missed a whole lot in the baby’s life.

Speaking on the breastfeeding week, the Head, Health Promotion and Nutrition, Dr. Khadijat Alarape said the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in Oyo state has increased from 30.5 percent in 2013 to 50 percent in 2017. She advised nursing mothers to continue to practice exclusive breastfeeding so that the 80 percent target for breastfeeding can be attained.

Dr. Alarape further urged mothers to not only breastfeed their children exclusively for the first six months, but also continue to breastfeed even after six months when complementary foods would have been introduced into the baby’s diet.

  • ‘Ibadan North local govt has highest unclaimed PVCs’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday said Ibadan North Local Government Area has the highest number of unclaimed Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) in Oyo State.

The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Mutiu Agboke, spoke during a sensitisation programme the commission held for the state’s lawmakers.

Agboke said of the 227,433 registered voters in the local government area, 73,602 voters’   cards remained unclaimed.

The REC noted that the sensitisation programme became imperative to encourage the lawmakers to sensitise their constituencies on the need to claim their PVCs.

He said PVC remained the only tool for voting credible candidates in the 2019 elections.

Agboke said: “Henceforth in Nigeria, like the forthcoming 2019 elections, PVCs will be very powerful. It is so powerful that if not well handled, the holder will be messed up on Election Day.

“There are so many components in the card that one cannot afford to toy with. It has an antenna and other components. One cannot afford to put it in one’s back pocket.

“It is the civic responsibility of every Nigerian of voting age to have it. It is an instrument to tongue-lash any politician and make the politician do the needful.

“If you don’t have it or if you have it and sell it, or you collect money to exercise your franchise, you have ridiculed your integrity. You have also ridiculed the process, ridiculed the power of PVC and we are against it.

“INEC is saying ‘no PVC, no voting’. Our Houses of Assembly are powerful stakeholders.”

House of Assembly Speaker Olagunju Ojo hailed the commission for the success recorded at the Ekiti governorship election.

He said all eyes were on the state and uncertainty had filled the air.

“But thanks to the adequate preparation and proactive strategies put in place for the election proper by INEC, all went well and the candidate most preferred by the people emerged,” Ojo said.

The Speaker assured the commission of the Assembly’s cooperation toward the successful conduct of elections.

The governor recounted that all along, all the stakeholders had given their nod to the arrangement, particularly the ownership arrangement between the state government, a private company, the 11 LGAs in the capital city and the butchers association, expressing shock at the sudden refusal of some people to comply with an agreement reached after years of engagement.

He warned that he would not allow the state slide back into its years of gory past when brigandage, lawlessness and impunity rules, charging the market leader to immediately embark on a sensitisation effort of all the traders, particularly the butchers.

He added that the state has nothing against the butchers just like all other trade association but wanted the butchery activities to be carried out in a modern, hygienic and friendly market.

“In 1972 when the government of the day directed a relocation of the Gege abattoir to the Bodija market abattoir, some people also resisted it. Now we asked them to go a better facility again, they are resisting. Must they politicise everything?

“For every progressive and positive government policies and decisions, you with always find some disgruntled elements fomenting trouble and playing politics with everything. We will not allow them, we won’t tolerate it. Our government is known for peace and that is what we will uphold.”

Governor Ajimobi who also visited the Amosun abattoir to commend the section of the butchers who complied with the relocation directive appealed to the members to talk to their other colleagues who are disrupting the peace of the state, warning that his administration will condone criminality from any quarters, particularly those being used by politicians.

The government assured the residents that it would continue to preserve the culture, norms and traditions of the people.

As this year’s Egungun Festival gathered momentum in Ibadan, some masqueraders have paid traditional homage to various obas in the city.

  • Ibadan supermarkets woo customers

Shopping is getting more structured in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital as supermarkets increase, offering superior services to roadside shops. Southwest Bureau Chief, BISI OLADELE, writes on four of the topmost supermarkets in the city, using price to guide shoppers into getting the best value.

Billboard, radio and television advertisements are gradually becoming the norm for the few top supermarkets in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as they grow in size and number. The competition is forcing them to also offer mouth-watering promotions, loyalty programmes and other incentives to woo customers.

In all of these, quality of service, availability of varieties and price play a huge role in gaining a larger percentage of the market. Also among the above factors, price advantage ranks high in determining patronage as shoppers struggle to achieve more with little funds.

For this reason, the big stores pitch “low prices” as their unique selling propositions. Yet, many shoppers are unable to zero down on which is best for what product in terms of price.

An online newspaper, newspeakonline.comin its recent price survey on four leading supermarkets in the city, showed Feedwell as the overall best in terms of prices.

Other supermarkets considered in the price survey are Foodco, Shoprite and Grandex. The four supermarkets have branches across the city but prices of their wares vary. The survey focused on popular daily beverages, food items, drinks and baby products.

According to the medium, the items shoppers mostly visit stores for, on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, include Johnnie walker red label wine700 (ml), Hennessy cognac vs 700(ml), Baileys Irish ice cream, Chamdor Non- Alcoholic wine, J&W premium Non-alcoholic wine, Molfix baby diapers (small), Pampers baby diapers (small), Nestle Cerelac baby food, Sunlight detergent 900g, Bounty Chocolate, Snickers chocolate, Mars Chocolate, Lipton tea bag, Nestle milo (500g) refill, Golden Morn 500g, Tom-tom all flavours , Heinz tomato ketchup 300g, Heinz salad cream 285g, Titus sardine, Ola-ola Poundo yam flour(1kg ), Golden penny Semovita (1kg), Close-up deep action toothpaste, Nivea roll on, Pringles big all flavours, Easy on spray starch, Jacobs cream crackers, Mcvities short bread, Nasco cornflakes 500(g).

Judging by the above table, Feedwell offers lowest prices in the candies and items such as chocolates, biscuits, wine and liquors. The table shows that the store has lower prices for products like the small packs of Molfix and Pampers baby diapers as well as Nestle Cerelac baby food.

For those wanting beverages, Feedwell and Shoprite look cool considering the fact that Nestle Milo and Peak milk are at their lowest prices at these stores. The price of Hienz salad cream is even too attractive to ignore at N625 compared with the price others offer.

Though prices of items may be a bit higher in other supermarkets, they have their strengths in other areas which include proximity, ambience of the stores and parking advantage.

While Shoprite has an ambience that attracts shoppers, a walk into Grandex Supermarket offers some other rich experience which some shoppers may enjoy, and which they may not find in other stores. Foodco’s restaurant is well liked by shoppers while it also offers regular promotions.

As we start another weekend, shoppers in Ibadan would be happy to make informed decisions with our guide.
