  • Ash Wednesday: Clergymen task Christians on exemplary life

As Christians in the country join others across the world to observe Ash Wednesday, clerics have admonished Christians to emulate the exemplary lifestyle of Jesus Christ.

The clergymen gave this charge while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ibadan.

They described Ash Wednesday as one of the most popular and important holy days observed by many Christians, and mark the beginning of the season of Lent.

Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, the Archbishop of Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, said that the Lenten season was a period of 40 days of intense prayer, fasting and alms giving.

“Ashes symbolise a call to repentance, grief and acknowledge of one’s sins before God.

“It also serves as the reminder that we are dust and to dust we will return. It is a day of penitential prayers.

“The Lent reflects the suffering of Jesus in the desert when he prayed and fasted for 40 days,” he said.

He called on Christians to follow the example of Jesus and live a life of love, selflessness and service.

“For those that cannot fast for reasons like pregnancy or health issues, they are advised to engage in active alms giving and service to others during this period,” he said.

On his part, the Bishop of Ogbomoso Methodist Diocese, the Rt. Rev. David Moradeyo, said that Christians should use the Lenten season to have a sober assessment of their lives and values.

According to him, it is through imitating the exemplary lifestyle of Christ that peace, tolerance and unity can be fostered in various communities and the country as a whole.

“People looked to Jesus while on earth, He was praiseworthy and was worthy of imitation and honour.

“He said concerning us that we are light of world and salt to the earth, therefore how we live our lives matter.

“We must live a life of sacrifice, love and kindness,” he said.

He said that Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful activities and habits.

“Ash Wednesday commences this period of spiritual discipline.

“Ash Wednesday emphasises our sinfulness before God and our human mortality, it helps us to realise that both have been triumphed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” he said.

He urged Christians to use this period of fasting and prayers to call on God for his intervention in the country’s affairs. (NAN)

Battle over Olubadan stool: Court orders hearing service on Olubadan

An Ibadan High Court presided over by Justice Oladiran Akintola, Monday ordered that  hearing notice of the suit filed by the Seriki Chiefs be served on the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and other members of the Olubadan-In-Council.

The Seriki Chiefs led by High Chief Bayo Oyediji, had dragged Governor Abiola Ajimobi, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and members of the Olubadan-In-Council to court, over the installation of Oba Adetunji, following the death of Oba Samuel Odulana.

He had seek the order of the court that it is the turn of the Seriki line to produce the next Olubadan after the death of Oba Odulana

At the resumed hearing of the case, counsel to the Seriki Chiefs, Mr. Sarafadeen Sanni, had drawn attention of the court to the fact that the defendants most especially members of the Olubadan-In-Council, had been employing delay tactics to prolong the case to the detriment of his clients.

According to him, the last time that members of the Olubadan-In-Council last appeared or represented in the case was February 10, 2016, urging the court to do everything within the law to come to the rescue of his clients by fixing a date for the case to commence in earnest.

Justice Akintola however drew his attention to the letter written to the court by the counsel representing the state, Mr. Salau Adegboyega, requesting for the adjournment of the case to either March 27 or 31 due to other official engagements.

Sanni in his response said while he would not oppose that the case be adjourned, the dates suggested by the state counsel were too long as the two days were over a month.

The presiding judge however enjoined him to pick within the dates suggested by the state counsel, stating that it would amount to futility to fix a hearing date for the case and at the end of the day; the state counsel would come again with a letter for adjournment when he was not part of the date picked.

Justice Akintola then adjourned the case to March 27 after Sanni has agreed with the date, ordering that a hearing order which may be the final be served on all the defendants in the case.

A burst up between a couple, Alade Muniru and his wife Sadiat, over the removal of a telephone battery has resulted in the collapse of their 18-year-old marriage.

Sadiat had approached the Ogungun Customary Court at Agodi in Ibadan, seeking the dissolution of the marriage, explaining that her husband had turned her into a punching bag.

“Although he used to beat me at least twice a week but that of the first day in the New Year was beyond what I can bear.

“I have four children for him and he rarely caters for me and the kids, despite my total submission to him as the head of the family.

“I, therefore, pray the court to separate us as his parents also are not helping matters, due to the fact, he is supported by them, whenever I reported his bad attitude to them,”  Sadiat said.

The husband admitted the allegation, pleading with the court to grant the divorce, saying that he was equally not interested in the marriage anymore.

Alade, a battery charger, described his wife as a deviant, who hardly obeyed his instructions.

He said that Sadiat had been warned several times not to touch his phone battery “because customers would not be able to reach me whenever my handset battery is down.

“ I do not joke with my job and I prefer allowing her to go than doing what will affect my job negatively, so the court should as a matter of urgency grant the dissolution,” Muniru stated.

The president of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, wasted no time in dissolving the marriage since both parties had agreed to part ways.

Balogun, however, directed the defendant to take two of the children in his custody while the plaintiff should take care of the other two kids.

He ordered the defendant to be paying N6, 000 as monthly allowance for the two kids in the custody of the plaintiff.
