15 die in Ibadan tanker fire

    •Man loses wife, three kids

•20 vehicles, 23 motorcycles, others destroyed

It was all tears yesterday, as 15 people, including a family of three children and their mother, were burnt to death in a petrol tanker fire on Saturday night at Molete, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The tanker was said to be coming from Challenge-Molete end of the road when the driver lost control.

The vehicle then somersaulted and caught fire, spilling its fuel content, spread into a mechanic workshop, shopping mall and otherareas.

A middle-aged man, who parked his vehicle to buy bread, lost the three children and his wife when the fire enveloped the family’s car.

Over 20 vehicles, 23 motorcycles, many shops and goods worth several millions of naira were also destroyed.

It took the intervention of the state fire-fighters to stem the spread of the fire into other thickly populated residential areas.

Eyewitness said government and private ambulances conveyed some of the burnt victims to the University College Hospital (UCH) in the state capital, where they are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) .

“It is God’s protection that is most important. Many, who died, never dreamt of this. Imagine a man that travelled from Ijebu-Ode to this place and only to stop to buy what he would eat, it was then the fire came, claiming his three children and his wife.

“It is a terrible incident. I was discussing with my friends, when we suddenly heard a deafening sound and people ran out of fear. But before five minutes, we saw fire covering everywhere. May God protect us from unforeseen occurrence,” an eyewitness, who gave his name as Ade, said yesterday.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi visited the scene twice between Saturday night and yesterday morning to sympathise with those affected by the fire.

Some policemen  prevented people from entering the area. A rope was tied to fence away intruders as policemen keep watch.

But the governor commiserated with the families of those who were burnt to death.

Ajimobi, who arrived at 8am, was visibly shaken by the gory sight. Accompanied by the Commissioner of Police Kola Sodipo, he was conducted round the scene of the inferno.

He ordered that a crane be brought to take the carcass of the tanker, which had crossed the road from obstructing traffic.

Ajimobi, who spoke with reporters, enjoined them “to take solace in the fact that death will come when it will.”

He said that many who sought to take political advantage of his administration’s genuine love for the people, especially traders on the streets, must have seen the danger of politicising genuine government policies.

“As I came here this morning, gentlemen of the press, you yourselves could hear statements from the crowd that gathered here. They keep shouting ‘And Ajimobi had warned us against street trading o!’ The problem we have is that politicians seek to profit from the lives of the people. Our administration has genuine love at heart for our people. This is manifesting itself gradually and our people themselves can see that love,” he said.

The governor was told that the bulk of those who lost their lives were traders who refused to move to the nearby Scout Camp market, which had over a thousand stalls with modern conveniences built by the government and given to the traders free.

“I sympathise with the dead and their families of the dead. This will show our love for the people in our desire to stop street trading. I learnt that a few days ago, another trailer veered off the road at Mobil area and hit the MTN building. If it had been before now when street traders gathered at the Mobil area, I imagine the number of casualties we would have been talking about,” he said.

Government, he said, had seen through the hazards posed by street trading, stating that it was why his administration made it a kernel of its urban renewal exercise.

“Apart from vehicles that skid off the road, killing our people, high tension wires also get cut and kill our people selling their wares by the road side. Our people should not listen to evil politicians who mislead them.

“They should support us to fight the menace of street trading, by asking them to leave the road and we will not allow evil politicians to profit from this genuine love by misleading our people,” he said.

  • Mystery school springs up at Ibadan’s ‘evil’ forest

Mystery school springs up at Ibadan’s ‘evil’ forest

Few months  after  the frightening discovery of several decomposed  bodies and dozens of human parts in a forest at Soka  in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, a public school is being built on the site but nobody seems to know by who.  OSEHE YE OKWUOFU reports that little progress has been made on the forensic investigation ordered by the state government.

IT was dubbed ‘Ibadan Forest of Horror’ by the media after the world woke up to the discovery of decomposing human bodies and rescue of some persons who had been kept in captivity for a long time. The discovery was greeted with rage and bewilderment, but shortly after, the noise died down and the city of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on whose outskirt the forest is located, has since put the saga behind.

Today, the ‘Forest of Horror’ is being turned to a public school by the government as a massive school thought to be one of several  Federal Government Model Colleges being built across the country, is being constructed at a speedy rate on a large piece of the former forest.

But many still live with horror and the fear of Soka forest will continue to hunt the people for many years to come.

Residents of the area who bared their minds said the thought will continue to remain very fresh in their memory as they still find it difficult to forget the rude shock and nightmare they suffered as a result.

The victims , who were rescued from the forest and taken to the state hospital, Yemetu, Adeoyo, Ibadan,  it was learnt, were given adequate medical attention and have since been re-united with their relatives.

A medical personnel at the hospital, who would not want her name mentioned in print, said a few of the victims suffered from mental disorder and have been referred to the psychiatric hospital for further medical care.

Meanwhile the Oyo state police command is yet to make any significant headway on the investigation to bring to book the culprits behind the killings at Soka forest.

Head of the investigation team, Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), Mr Dasuki, told The Nation that all efforts to track down the principal suspect, simply identified as Alhaji Gbadegesin, has not yielded fruit .

The police, he said, in its investigation, was also making effort to arrest owners of the abandoned factories being used by the suspects to commit the crime but none has shown up despite the intense search for them.

Mr Dasuki had referred to the team of forensic experts as a basis and beacon of hope for tracking down the culprits, but as at last week nothing has been made available to the police to assist in its effort to arrest the suspects.

The Chief Pathologist, Dr Eze Uwom, who led a team of scientists from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan to the site where many people were believed to have been chained and killed by their captors, described the exercise as very disappointing and frustrating .

Since the team was engaged by the state government to conduct forensic analysis that would lead to the roots of the deaths of many Nigerians at the forest, nothing significant has been achieved.

The Chief Pathologist explained that his team has not gone beyond the initial stage of its analysis since the exercise has been stopped due to lack of support and logistics.

He said: “The only thing I have to tell you is that we are at the level of forensic recovery. We can only proceed at this stage if we have the needed logistics. So, we have not left the initial stage. We are still at the very initial stage. This investigation requires resources and manpower.

“But I have come to realise that the authorities have not shown the will to pursue this case. It is not because of lack of expertise that we cannot move beyond this stage. The problem is that until we turn the heat on those we put in the position of authority, we are not going to get anywhere. We do forensic with full support from the authorities with the appropriate materials and resources. We did the Dana Air crash in Lagos. I led the team and everyone was there working with all our clothes melting on our bodies.

“We got full support from the Lagos State Government and we are working closely with the authorities. Logistics was not a problem. Maybe it is because its Soka, the people involved were nobody.  “

Speaking further on the Soka saga, Uwom said during the period his team was on site for data collection, he was not aware of any support from the authorities, and if there was, he said it was definitely not for his team.

“Well, as to your question regarding the report of the forensic analysis, the answer you are seeking is not available because this has not moved from the rudiment stage,” he stated.

While police said they are not relenting in their resolve to fish out the suspects behind the Soka killings, the faceless owners of the abandoned buildings have filed legal action against the government over the demolition of the buildings and construction of model secondary school on the plots of land situated at the notorious forest.

The Assistant Commissioner Police who confirmed the suit said a copy of the legal action was also served on him. He however expressed delight on the decision of the government to use the plots for school.

“At least, this will send away those criminals who hide under the situation of the area to commit crime, “ he said.

The legal action, he added will also open the way for owners of the structures to come forward, having gone into hiding since the discovery of the Soka killings.

The area  where many lives were lost is now wearing a new look with economic activities springing up. When The Nation visited the site, construction workers and food sellers were seen working hard to see the school project completed. Building materials suppliers were also adding to the buzz on the site.

However, there are conflicting reports over the ownership of the said model secondary school. While the Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Oluyole Local Government, Mr Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, said the school was being constructed by the state government, The Nation learnt that it could be a Federal Government Girls Model college.

While speaking on the construction of new blocks of classrooms, the council boss hinted that the citing of the school at the location was strategic by the government.

The decision of the government, he added was aimed at bringing development to the area and make it a no hiding place for criminals who see the abandoned buildings and plots of land as a cover to commit heinous crime.

“We are thankful to the state government for donating the school to the local government, to bring more development to the area”, he said.

But the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Solomon Olaniyonu said he was not aware of the donation of the school to the local government.

“As the Commissioner in charge of Education, I am not aware of the model school being cited at Soka area” , he added.

When The Nation visited the Ibadan office of the Federal Ministry of Education, the officers could not give useful information as they said that their boss who could confirm the ownership of the school was not around.

When speaking on the model school, a resident of the area, Mr Adesokan Smith lauded the effort of the government for taking decisive step to clear the area of nefarious activities.

“This is something all of us living in Soka and Macmillan have been praying for over the years because this forest has been harbouring these criminals for over ten years now. There was a time the landlords wrote to the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Mukaila Aborode, during Alao-Akala’s regime complaining about these evil men and we called on the government to clear this area but nothing happened. Now that the government has brought this school, our people can now sleep with our two eyes closed”.

•IBEDC prepares workers  for service delivery

The Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has inaugurated a N150million 2×15 MVA Injection Power Substation at Akanran, in Onaran Local Government Area in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Built by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), the rehabilitated substation is a replacement for the one vandalised by protesters in 2012.

Inaugurating the substation, Ajimobi urged residents and community leaders to protect the power infrastructure and make it sustainable. He praised the management of IBEDC for the rehabilitation.

    Ajimobi spoke mainly in Yoruba.

Earlier, the Chairman, IBEDC,  Tunde Ayeni, represented by the Managing Director, Fortunato Leynes, assured of the readiness of the firm to provide  a minimum of 18-hour  power supply daily.

He said the decision by the company to rehabilitate the substation, set ablaze by some youths in 2012 in the course of the anti-subsidy protest, was a testimony to its readiness to improve the standard of life of its customers through unparalleled services.

He said: “As an organisation bound by our core values of teamwork, innovation, excellence, integrity and dependability, we are committed to building a world class utility company where performance and exceptional service delivery comes naturally.

”To transform the industry we are operating today, we need the support of the government at every level, including relevant stakeholders and especially our consumers that we seek to serve. Permit me to use this opportunity to appeal to the residents to take ownership of this installation to forestall any unfortunate recurrence. I call on all community leaders to work in partnership with IBEDC to nip vandalism in the bud. We all cannot move forward if nothing is done to stop this evil doing.”

On his part, the Deputy Managing Director of IBEDC, John Darlington, while expressing his appreciation to the stakeholders, urged its customers to pay their bills and avoid short-changing the company via bypassing prepaid metres and engaging in illegal connections.

He said: “We cannot move forward without you. We will need your support as we role out our metering scheme. As our customers, we will do everything possible to make life confortable for you.” He urged the customers to pay their bills “so we can serve you better.

He assured that IBEDC will join hands with the government and make a difference in power distribution,

Meanwhile, IBEDC has begun attitudinal reorientation of its workers as part of efforts to position the company for improved customer service.

Addressing the workers and other stakeholders at a programme organised by the company in Ibadan, Darlington, said it is only the right, skilled, committed and motivated workforce that would be able to make the company’s current journey to the promise land successful.

Quoting a former United States Defence Secretary, Mr. Donald Rumsfeld, Darlington said: “you go to war with the army you have, not army you might wish to have at a later time,” saying the statement could not be more true and precise for the journey IBEDC has just started.

“Truly, people are our greatest asset on the journey to our defined promise land. Therefore, we have no choice other than creating teams,” he added.

He said it would be a waste of time to articulate ideas about values and culture if the company does not model and reward behaviour that aligns with those goals, adding that IBEDC must reward good performance and as well sanction poor performance.

One of the resource persons at the event, Dr. Tayo Aduloju, who spoke on “Imperatives for strategic transformation from public to private enterprise,” urged the workers to create a new organisational culture.

He explained that the firm’s transformation to a private enterprise involves new rules of engagement and charged the company and its workers to map out the vision, scope and nature of transformation.

He reminded the management and workers that, “your success in life is not based on your ability to change,  rather, it is based in your ability to change faster than your competition, customers, and business.”

The special guest and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, urged the workers to be guided by the company’s mission and vision.

  • PZ offers 2,000 Ibadan traders free medical check-up

PZ offers 2,000 Ibadan traders free medical check-up

The queues to the Hot Robb Mobile Relief Centre were long. Those in the queue were mainly traders who came to partake in the free medical check-ups.

It was a ceremony by PZ Cussons to activate one of its premier products, Hot Robb, at the famous Gbagi Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

The events included massaging of the joints and other parts of the body with the Robb, blood pressure (BP) check, free consultations and enlightenment on health-related issues from medics.

Laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, doctors and nurses attended to ‘patients’.

Products’ sampling, stole the show off other activities in the market, stalling trading as traders and members of the neighbourhood were enwrapped in the exercise.

Scintillating fuji tunes wafted live from famous artiste, Saheed Osupa, who is well known in the city.

Hot Robb, a premium pain-relieving ointment, was used to massage hundreds of volunteers for all manner of pains under the watchful eyes of a physiotherapist.

Oover 2, 000 benefited from the free medical check-ups.

Dr. Sekinat Adebola, one of the Medical Consultants, who led the centre, could not hide her feelings about the good work of PZ Cussons and Hot Rob.

In her words: “Providing the unique platform of a Medical Relief Centre for free medical check-ups in a place like this is a charitable  gesture for which PZ Cussons’ Hot Robb should be applauded.  It is good for the public, especially traders, who hardly go on holidays, to enjoy this type of service; they need to know their health status, what to do or medications to apply, where necessary. Any platform that can afford them free access to medical enlightenment as this is a commendable corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative that other institutions should emulate.”

A trader in the market and a beneficiary of the free medical check-up, Alhaji Oladimeji Abdulganiyu, lauded the Hot Robb exercise, describing the free medical services as laudable.

He said though the exercise impeded trading, whatever they lost in sales they gained in the free medical services.

Mrs. Racheal Olalekan, a resident of Bodija, said: “From now on, I will be applying all I have been told here today. The medical people have advised me on the need for regular walkout and active healthy lifestyle, among others, which I hope to imbibe, the turnout is unbelievable and they attended to us all, we are grateful to PZ and Hot Robb.”

James Oladipo, another trader in the Gbagi Market, who got massaged, said: “I am most grateful to Hot Robb. I feel more relief now. I have been struggling with the pains around my right knee for days; it is certain that if I continue to apply Hot Robb the way they have done and instructed me now, the pain will go forever.”

Mr. Oladimeji Muyideen, a computer accessory dealer in the market, said: “This PZ Cussons’ Hot Robb activation is innovative and great. We now know that the company has the love of traders and buyers at heart; apart from the musician they have brought here to entertain us and afford us the opportunity to relax and enjoy ourselves, the free medical check-up and consultations are wonderful, they did their homework very well, bringing these things to our door steps the way they have done is innovative, you can see the mammoth crowd here, we are grateful to them.”

Brand Manager, Robb, Mr. Aro Olalekan, said the Mobile Relief Centre was designed to further bring the unique values and promises of Hot Robb to the public, adding that the free product sampling and massaging was meant to assure the consumers that the brand can deliver on its promises.

“Hot Robb,” he said, “is specially made for muscular aches and pains while Robb Original is for cold, nasal congestion and mild pain.”

Also, Marketing Manager, PZ Cussons, Mr. Charles Nnochiri, who said the campaign would be taken to other parts of the country, assured that Hot Robb will be available to all, adding that the ointment has given consumers quality choice that would deliver on their expectations.

“Robb Original, as we all knows it to be, is a medicated ointment to give relief from symptoms of cold and nasal congestion and relief from mild aches and pain. Hot Robb is the hot balm that uses fast penetrating and deep-reaching heat to give relief from aches and pains, Hot Robb is positioned as the balm for cold, nasal congestion and mild pain, those, who don’t like massive heat, may use Robb Original while those who prefer faster penetration should go for Hot Robb,” Nnochiri advised.

He added that the PZ Cussons’ Robb is the leading brand in the medical segment.

  • ‘Army’ of beggars invades Ibadan

    ‘Army’ of beggars invades Ibadan

An unusually large number of beggars have descended on Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, causing all sorts of problems for the residents amidst efforts by the state government to rid the city of their menace. TAYO JOHNSON reports.

Residents of Ibadan in Oyo State have been having an unusual kind of ‘headache’ for some time now, no thanks to the invasion of their beloved city by a large number of beggars seeking economic sustenance.

Major roads and strategic road junctions in the ancient city have been taken over by these ‘army’ of beggars who could also be seen lurking around major motor parks and markets across the metropolis.

From Mokola Roundabout in the city centre via Sabo through Jemibewon Road to Molete, Beere junction, down to Oje Market, Agodi-Gate Bus stop, Iwo Road Roundabout, Old Ife Road and up north around Ojoo Motor park, a long queue of old men and women some dressed in tattered clothes with begging bowls or polythene bags in hands could be seen here and there waiting for good spirited people to gift them any amount of money.

And moving around in twos and threes in between slow moving traffic in the city could also be found young children sent out by their parents or guardian to solicit for alms from motorists and even pedestrians. Seated somewhere not too far away from the kid beggars are their adult counterparts waiting for them to bring ‘returns’.

All over the place the city seems to have been taken over by the beggars who are almost becoming a permanent feature of the society that nobody seems to take notice of them anymore save for those who want to give them alms sometimes for religious purpose.

Though the beggars are mostly from the northern part of the country and across the border in Chad and Niger Republics, a few of them also come from some neighbouring states in the southwest.

Homeless, poor, hungry and almost totally illiterate, these beggars some of them physically challenged were drawn to Ibadan by the prospect of being able to make ends meet in a city, the stature of the Oyo State capital, in the absence of any viable economic venture back home where they come from. But their presence is becoming an embarrassment to the residents.

A beggar along Jemibewon Road, Bashir Mohammed, a father of eight children, told The Nation that begging is the only way he could take care of his large family because nobody gives him and his family food.

The alarming and embarrassing trend becomes more worrisome when it is discovered that some of these beggars have no business begging because they seem physically capable of doing menial jobs to eke out a living.

Though poverty and unemployment have been identified as the driving force behind this culture of begging, the ‘business’ seems to have become so lucrative that some like the aforementioned Bashir Mohammed have turned it into a ‘job’.

But another beggar, Sule Mohammed, who does his business around Agodi Gate Bus-stop said the job is degrading. He told The Nation:”ýI never planned or dreamed to being a beggar, even once in my life, but I don’t have a choice because I have to survive. Being a beggar is an unfortunate life experience. God knows I tried every effort to avoid this condition I have found myself now. But, who would give a chance to a man who could not even read or write his name? If ever there are, I never met one. I thought the city would be the best place for me and my family to live in. We left far away Dutse (Jigawa State capital) where we once lived to come down here to survive in this city.

“Many Nigerians probably think that my `job’ is the easiest job on earth. If that would be the case then I have to be the richest “dying man”. Well, they should hear me now. Begging is the most degrading and painful work anyone could ever have”.

Degrading or not, the Oyo State government seems poised to rid the metropolis of the menace of the beggars. Recently, the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on People with Disability, Prince Paul Adelabu declared street begging in any part of the state as an offence with immediate effect, replacing it with the introduction of a social scheme that would be established to feed and cater for the beggars in a centre to be established.

He said that no indigene of the state is among the beggars, adding that people from other neighbouring states and tribes are the ones littering the streets, constituting the nuisance.

“There is no religion that tells us to go out and beg, henceforth street begging is prohibited in all the 33 local government areas of Oyo State, any beggar found begging on the street will be arrested and returned back to their various states.

“This will also ensure that the practice which allows children of school age to go about begging in the streets in the name of Almajiri is stopped” said he

A social welfare officer in Ibadan, Mr Kehinde Ayinla noted that street begging is not only perpetrated by hopeless, sick or physically challenged people, stressing that strong and agile people do beg too.

According to him “if you go to government ministries, departments and agencies, you will see able bodied men going from office to office begging for money. Some ladies too indulge themselves in the act of begging, some will hold little babies and tell one lie or the other to beg for money, while others hire children to beg and return them later in the day.”

The Nation checks round the city revealed that some parents actively encourage their children to go about begging on behalf of the family blaming it on poverty, a situation a Civil Servant Mr Muyiwa Ogundoyin described as irresponsible parenting.

Much as poverty has been identified as the major cause of street begging in Nigeria, many who spoke with The Nation believe that there was need for government at all levels to eradicate poverty to the barest minimum to reduce the number of beggars on the street. They say government should provide jobs for people so that they in turn can take care of their families while also strengthening social welfare programmes for destitute and the physically challenged.

While some are quick to blame a particular religion for the menace of street begging, the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organisation, Abdul-Quadir Abdul-Rafi said “even Allah discourages begging”, noting that the hands that gives rather than collects is blessed according to Islam.

“Anybody that begs has thrown away his dignity and morals. The government needs to clear them off the street in no time, and provide them with enabling social amenities” he said

Abdul-Rafi urged the state government to create a rehabilitation centre for the beggars.

In the opinion of the Presiding Pastor of a Pentecostal Church in Ibadan, Moses Ayanleke begging portrayed that a country is poor and lacking in human resource management.

He said that if the roads and streets were rid of beggars, it would save the image of the state.

A leader of the Catholic Women’s Organisation, Mrs Patricia Chukwu on her part called for the urgent need to take away the beggars from the street of Ibadan. She is worried that visitors arriving in Ibadan could have a negative impression of the Oyo State capital on sighting a battalion of beggars on the roads. She held firmly that there should be a stop to loitering of beggars in Ibadan and urged the state government to take necessary steps to ensure that this was done.

“Street begging in our society today is like cancer in the body. Either we sacrifice the affected part and save the body or we allow it to invade and destroy the entire body. We either summon enough courage or will to break its neck and finish it once and for all, or we allow it to remain a nuisance and an obnoxious part of our culture and tradition till the end of time.” She noted

2015: G7 PDP aspirants insist on Ibadan consensus candidate

The Group of Seven (G7) governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State who hail from Ibadan, the state capital, insisted yesterday on producing a candidate for the next election.

In a communique issued after its meeting, the group explained that its insistence was based on the  recognition of the political realities in the state.

However, the group said it has never excluded other zones in the governorship arrangements of the party.

The group said: “We are aware of similar meetings at various zones of the state for the governorship slot.”

The G7 emphasised that each state has its own political peculiarities.

It said it was “concerned about winning the next governorship election and forming the next government in Oyo State and therefore encourages contributions and ideas on the best strategies to achieve the objective.”

The group’s goal drew criticism from Ogbomoso where two other aspirants hail from. They are the immediate former governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala and Senator Ayoade Adeseun. Alao-Akala boasted that he would defeat them. Adeseun said Ogbomoso did not anoint Alao-Akala as the sole candidate. He said the members of the G7 were only exercising their fundamental human right.

Adeseun said the decision of PDP members in Ogbomoso was to support whoever wins the governorship ticket in any of the political parties, believing that his success in the election would bring benefits to the zone.

Members of the G7 are Dr Wole Oyelese, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Prof. Soji Adejumo, Sen. Teslim Folarin, Seyi Makinde and Dr. Azeez Adeduntan.

  • Firm assures Ibadan residents of 15hrs uninterrupted power supply

Firm assures Ibadan residents of 15hrs uninterrupted power supply

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has assured residents of over 15 hours uninterrupted power supply when it finishes upgrading its transmission facilities.

IBEDC Managing Director Fortunato Leynes gave the assurance at the Premier Hotel at the weekend during the maiden edition of a knowledge sharing series organised by the company, titled: “Journey to Change”.

He said: “Generating capacity should be at 5,000 Mega Watts, but what we have when we took over was at the level of 4,000 Mega Watts and went down to 3,000 Mega Watts, but now it is hovering around 3,000 to 3,500 Mega Watts.

“One of the greatest challenges facing the company in the last 11 months since we took over is that there is no enough power generating capacity to distribute to our customers. We also do not generate enough revenue to support our business activities.

“We have put forward a tariff review proposal to the National Electricity Regulating Commission (NERC) because the tariff system now is not sufficient for us to recover our investment and generate the funds we need to make our service delivery efficient. For us to be efficient, there must be an upward review of tariff rates by 25 to 30 per cent to make us viable.”

On why customers are still experiencing epileptic power supply, Leynes said: “This is primarily because of the debt and poor infrastructure we met on ground. We have dilapidated electricity facilities everywhere and this will cost a lot of money. If we do not generate enough revenue, it will be very hard to achieve this. The low generating capacity is primarily due to the vandalisation of gas pipelines and weakness in the transmission network. We cannot serve our customers if the generating capacity is low.

“We are now buying electricity distribution materials like transformers, poles and conductors to improve our distribution capacity. We are also buying metres so that our customers will be appropriately metred. Right now we have a metre application system called the Credit Advancement Prepaid Metre Installation (CAPMI) scheme and within 45 days, metres are installed for customers.

“We have about 1.1 million customers and are still doing customer remuneration to get the actual figure. Some are not paying but are stealing electricity. By the time we complete this remuneration, we will make them legitimate customers.

His deputy, Mr John Darlington, said: “More efforts are being made to provide quality services. The challenges are enormous, but if we can get the right people, attitude, technology and there is discipline, in two to three years, the difference will be clear.”

The Special Guest and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (U.I.), Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, said many opportunities were yet to be harnessed due to power failure.

He said: “If I become the president of this country, I will first address the problem of electricity and other things will fall in place.”

Work will soon commenced on the abandoned 82 acres of Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) staff estate located in Owode, Apata area of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The CBN’s Deputy-Governor (Corporate Services), Mr. Bayo Adelabu gave this assurance while on the on-spot assessment of the multi-million naira property designed as housing units for its staff but which unfortunately had been abandoned and allowed to suffer neglect.

Adelabu who led a team of staffers within Ibadan office of the CBN to the area, lamented the culture of waste and undue neglect that “this very massive property containing several blocks of housing units has been made to go through in a way that this place is in a state of neglect.”

“But CBN under the current leadership of our Governor, Godwin Emefiele is a sensitive, responsible organization. You recall there was a news item in a newspaper about the neglect of a property which belongs to CBN last week. Immediately we read the news, we have to respond promptly because it is our belief that a very massive property containing several blocks of housing units that is in a state of neglect must be brought back to life,” Adelabu told reporters in Ibadan.
