IBEDC recants on ‘Band A’ feeders’ claim

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has aligned itself with the position of the Transmission Company of Nigerian (TCN) on its (IBEDC’s) inability to deliver the estimated hours of supply to customers on ‘Band A’ feeders, in a recent communication.

It said it had reviewed TCN’s claim in the spirit of openness, transparency and accountability and found that to be correct.

Speaking through its Lead, Media Relations, Busolami Tunwase, IBEDC said it acknowledged the energy and passion the regulator and other stakeholders had put and continued to put into making the programme- Revised Service Based Tariff succeed, adding that it had taken action to correct the errors and send the right signals to her personnel by taking disciplinary actions on those involved in misrepresenting the facts that were sent to the public.

IBEDC had on April 9, via its social communication to its customers, said TCN was responsible for its (IBEDC’s) failure to deliver estimated hours of supply to its feeder due to System Outages and Tripping on TCN’s feeders.

In a swift response, the TCN had in a media report denied the allegations, noting that the feeders mentioned in IBEDC’s publication were not within the TCN network.

The development led to further investigation by the IBEDC, which was later found out to be false allegations against the TCN.

Provide meters for Nigerians before tariff increment – APC chieftain tells IBEDC, others

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi  Mumuni has enjoined the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and other electricity distribution companies to provide meters for Nigerians before they embark on tariff increment.

Mumuni noted that increment of tariff on services not rendered by distribution companies will be another way to defraud Nigerians.

Mumuni, who was the gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) in Lagos state in 2011, made the declaration via a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday, April 9.

It was gathered that electricity distribution companies across the country have increased their tariff.

But the APC chieftain while speaking, noted that the government should ensure that the distribution companies provide meters to their customers before the increment of tariff.

Mumuni in the statement signed by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, added that increment of tariff without functional meters may result in big crisis considering the situation of poverty hitting deeper on the citizens.

“Let me add my voice to the recent increment of tariff by electricity distribution companies.

“Government should ensure metering to every nook and cranny of Nigeria before embarking on escalating the tariffs. We should be more sensible when it comes to activation on certain aspect, especially when it has to do with ourselves as a citizen.

“Increasing tariff on the services not rendered with malfunctioning meters that reflect fraud will add to the problems face by Nigerians.

“We should be more sincere with ourselves in Nigeria, we have read commentaries, we have had from some of the failed Ministers that claimed to fix the power supply of our country under few months. It is lie upon lies, they failed woefully, especially Buhari’s Ministers who are a bunch of failures.

“I could not remember the number of times 3rd Mainland bridge was shut down during Buhari’s 8 years in government but nothing to show for it on the acclaimed repairs.

“Look at what the present minister under President Bola Tinubu has put together without cut and nail job of Buhari’s ministers.

“The government should consider the metering distribution first before going into tariff increment, this will be more sensible.

“Otherwise, it may result into big crisis considering the situation of poverty hitting deeper on the citizens.”

Why we disconnected UCH power source – IBEDC

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) on Wednesday, March 27, said it was compelled to disconnect the power supply to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan due to an outstanding debt exceeding N400 million.

The company said the drastic measure comes after exhaustive attempts to engage with the hospital’s management regarding the substantial overdue balance, which has persisted for over six years.

The management in a statement by the Chief Key Accounts Officer, Johnson Tinuoye said despite numerous written correspondences and multiple meetings, UCH management displayed an uncooperative attitude towards addressing the outstanding debt.

The statement reads in part, “IBEDC’s fiduciary responsibility to its stakeholders and market operators necessitates timely and complete remittances, especially considering the liquidity crisis facing Discos.

“Unpaid electricity bills hinder Discos’ ability to fulfill obligations to GENCOs and purchase gas for power generation, contributing to the nationwide issue of low power supply.

“It’s worth noting that UCH operates more than 70 diesel-generating sets, consuming diesel at N1,600 per litre. This means they generate energy at N400 per kilowatt, significantly higher than the tariff of N74 per kilowatt that IBEDC sells to UCH.

“Additionally, IBEDC has provided infrastructure to ensure 20-24 hours of dedicated supply to UCH, yet they have refused to settle their outstanding debt or propose a workable repayment plan.”

It read: “It’s pertinent to highlight that UCH is not the only Teaching Hospital within IBEDC’s franchise. Teaching Hospitals in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State, and others in Ogun State promptly settle their bills.

“IBEDC questions why UCH differs in this regard.

“While recognizing the crucial role hospitals play in society, IBEDC emphasizes the necessity of adhering to payment obligations, particularly amidst challenging economic conditions.

“As our regulator, NERC has warned DISCOs of potential license withdrawal for non-performance, IBEDC encourages all customers to pay for electricity consumption promptly to ensure the viability of the sector.

“IBEDC remains committed to excellent service delivery and urges other customers owing the company to make prompt payments, enabling the company to meet its obligations effectively and provide reliable services.”

IBEDC records 1,459 cases of energy theft in two months

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc said it has identified and recorded over 1,459 cases of energy theft between January and February 2024.

The company said in collaboration with the Federal Government Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO), it has begun investigations and legal actions against individuals and businesses involved in energy theft.

Noting that it is intensifying its campaign against energy theft within its network area, IBEDC said the cases under investigation include various offences such as meter bypass and illegal meter tampering, resulting in significant financial losses amounting to hundreds of millions of naira for the company.

The Chief Key Accounts Officer of the company, Johnson Tinuoye, in a statement said the escalating figures prompted the strategic partnership with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences, a federal government agency dedicated to expediting the investigation and prosecution of offenders within IBEDC’s franchise.

He emphasized that under the Electricity Act, energy theft is now recognized as a criminal offence, carrying severe penalties including imprisonment.

He noted that in the Osun region, two individuals have been apprehended for stealing energy through meter bypass and illegal connections, adding that, their cases have been formally charged to court for prosecution.

Tinuoye said: “We want to send a clear message to our customers that energy theft will not be tolerated. Our collaboration with the Federal Government Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences underscores our commitment to ensuring a fair and just electricity distribution system.

“Energy theft not only undermines the integrity of our operations but also deprives IBEDC of the revenue necessary to provide quality services to our customers.”

He urged customers to refrain from engaging in any form of energy theft, emphasizing that the consequences can be severe, as there is no room for negotiation with the SIPTEO Task Force team which is actively patrolling and investigating instances of energy theft for prosecution.

Why we are having erratic power supply, by IBEDC

Following the threat of licence revocation  by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) over the state of poor power supply in the country, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), yesterday gave reasons for the state of the erratic power supply within its franchise.

The IBEDC, in a statement, explained that one of the primary factors for the problem is the low supply of gas to generating companies (Gencos), which has led to a gradual decrease in available generation into the grid.  This, the Dosco said, has significantly reduced the power available on the transmission grid for onward supply to IBEDC, and in turn, hindered its ability to provide power to customers within its franchise in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara and partly in Kogi, Niger and Ekiti states.

Besides, the firm blamed the scheduled maintenance conducted by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in January and March, this year, as necessitating planned outages in specific areas on her network. While the firm agreed that the measures were essential for ensuring the long-term reliability of electricity infrastructure, it recognised the inconvenience and disruption to service they may cause.

“Vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure remains a major issue negatively impacting power supply. An example is the unfortunate vandalism of TCN towers in Ogun State in May 2023, which resulted in over seven months of darkness for many of our valued customers. At IBEDC we are particularly confronted with, the escalating cases of vandalism, with over 40 incidents recorded in 2024 alone.”

BREAKING: Power Minister summons AEDC, IBEDC, TCN over erratic electricity supply

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu has summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a ‘crucial meeting’ over erratic electricity supply facing the country.

Weeks ago, Adelabu, had identified the root cause of the ongoing electricity blackout as the shortage of gas supply to electricity generation companies and outstanding debts owed to producers.

On his verified X page on Wednesday, March 6, Adelabu said: “As the Minister of Power, I am deeply concerned about the deteriorating electricity supply across the country.

“In response to this pressing issue, I have summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a crucial meeting.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions.

“It is disheartening to witness the decline in power supply despite the concerted efforts to improve the situation. The Ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

“Despite this progress, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.”

Adelabu offered reassurance to Nigerians, stating that measures are being taken to address these challenges, leading to a gradual increase in the availability of electricity across the nation.

He added: “Moving forward, I am committed to holding all distribution companies accountable for their performance. Willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed. Additionally, I have instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.

“During recent supervisory visits to power generating plants, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the sector.

“Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, which will alleviate the financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide. I urge electricity consumers to remain patient as we work tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.”

IBEDC said residential consumers in the state owed a whopping over N67billion, warning that mass disconnection of residential areas loomed if people failed to pay their debts.

The Chief Executive Officer, Kingsley Achife, an engineer; who made this known yesterday, urged the public not to shield workers of the company indulging in unwholesome practices, as about 20 of such erring officials had been sent packing in the last five months.

He spoke at a community engagement in Abeokuta with customers within Abeokuta metropolis and Sagamu to seek better working relationship.

He appealed to them to pay their debts, “which are now becoming a source of concern to the company.”
