He said Ibrahim had proved to be the right person to govern the state.

Adedoyin said: “We are gathering here to show to our leaders that we are voting for Senator Ibrahim here in Igbotako. This meeting is to reaffirm our commitment to the candidature of our performing senator.

“Ibrahim has the capacity to offer good governance. He has performed well at the National Assembly. We trust him and urge APC members to vote for him.”

Another APC leader in the locality, Emmanuel Afolagbade, appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a level playing field for the aspirants.

He said they would visit APC members in the 18 local governments to canvass support for Senator Ibrahim.

Ondo poll: Ibrahim will get APC ticket, says Odere

The Senate President’s legislative aide, Femi Odere, has identified Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as the only All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who has shown the ability to become the next governor of Ondo State.

Odere, who spoke during his visit to the corporate headquarters of Vintage Press Ltd, publishers of The Nation newspapers and Gbelegbo, in Matori, Lagos, said the people have long yearned for a governor who is sensitive and prepared to address their needs and advance the state.

Among the candidates, Odere said Ibrahim possessed the attributes that qualify him to win not only the APC primary but also the governorship election.

Odere added that Ibrahim’s popularity, track record, competency, idea-driven nature, academic qualifications, and networking will influence the outcome of the APC primary in his favour.

“The issues that will shape the APC governorship primary to me are more fascinating and that is going to be on popularity, track record, demonstrable competence, idea-driven kind of personality, and perhaps not the least. The kind of antecedent that an individual has, not only in Ondo State but also the networking that the individual has in the national political arena.

“Fundamentally, I will say the party should not elect somebody having any political baggage that may come to haunt not only the party but also the individual at the end of the day. This is because we have to take into cognisance that elections to some extent have been determined by the court. So, in my view, we need someone who has all these attributes, and also somebody who does not have any political baggage. This is what the APC has to worry about.

“I’ve studied and understudied most of these aspirants and one particular individual stands out and that person is Senator Jimoh Ibrahim. He is from the South Senatorial District and he just stands out in so many forms. I can begin to articulate all his attributes and I believe that if the party can consider him for the ticket, he has what it takes and he will deliver the November election.

“In addition to his popularity, a wealth of ideas and knowledge, as well as his academic qualifications, I see the APC primary election to be in his favour and the party can go back to sleep with Senator Jimoh Ibrahim having the party ticket.

“Popularity is a relative word. I believe that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim is a known quantity, and also a known quality. There is nobody in the state that has not heard of that name. Not only that, there is nobody who doesn’t know his antecedent. So when it comes to popularity, Senator Ibrahim is well known to all. His popularity is a non-issue when it comes to choosing somebody who is particularly popular because Jimoh Ibrahim is popular,”

Odere emphasised that Ibrahim would use his unique wealth of ideas to shape and transform the state.

He also described the senator as the only candidate to utilise the resources for the state and the Nigerian economy.

“I’ll take it from the view of having somebody who wants to interrogate governance from the point of view of ideas. I believe strongly that ideas will be the word and Jimoh Ibrahim is one person that I’ve seen out of the 16 aspirants whose ideas are so unique, whose ideas can trigger transformation and the developmental objective of understanding. I’ll give you one example.

“Jimoh Ibrahim is a first-timer in the Senate and in the short period that he has been in the Senate, he has not only become the star boy but has sponsored a couple of developmentally induced bills and one of those bills is the bitumen bill.

“I hope you agree with me that Ondo state has one of the largest causes of bitumen, and over time, nobody, not even a single politician since the Fourth Republic has been able to see the economic potential, that bitumen can contribute not only to the state, but to the national economic plan in general. The bill has gone through the second reading and will go through the third reading.

“What he said basically, and I pretty much agree with him that leveraging bitumen itself in Ondo State, without even spending a dime, in terms of infrastructure development, to different companies, is going to transform the state in a very fundamental way. Not to even talk about the other things that the state has in terms of cocoa, and other things.

“So, Jimoh Ibrahim is somebody who is driven by ideas, and like I said, earlier, ideas would be rewarded. And if you don’t have an idea, if you don’t have anything that you want to do, in terms of how the country and the state is going to shape out and be in the big league, such as where Lagos and to some extent Ogun state is, then I don’t see any reason why an aspirant should be running for that position. This is because Ondo state has been deficient or has had a deficit when it comes to leadership quality and I believe that out of all the 16 aspirants in the APC, Jimoh Ibrahim stands out anytime.”

Odere confidently said Senator Ibrahim would win the party ticket.

“They’re going to try and it is within their right, to put up a fight, because you don’t get into a race without trying to put up a fight. That’s the essence of being in the race, but at the end of the day, when you consider all the things that I just said, somebody is going to win a ticket, and I have no doubt in my mind that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim is going to win the ticket,”

    • Governor, rivals differ over ‘no vacancy’ claim

    • Group accuses Aiyedatiwa of printing fake membership slip

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Ondo State, including the incumbent Lucky Aiyedatiwa, yesterday took their battle to Abuja, ending up in a brief exchange of words ahead of next Saturday’s primary election.

Aiyedatiwa had fired the first salvo, declaring there was no vacancy in the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure.

He was sworn in on December 27, 2023 in succession to the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Business mogul and one of the leading aspirants for the APC ticket, Dr.Jimoh Ibrahim, dismissed the governor’s statement as a huge joke.

“He is out of that place by the time we finish primary next week; he is gone and there is nothing virtually he can do about it,” the Senator from Ondo South added.

Another leading aspirant, Chief Olusola Oke (SAN), said Aiyedatiwa could say whatever he liked, but he (Oke) would take office as the next governor of the state.

The trio and other aspirants were at the APC National Secretariat for screening by the seven-man committee set up for that purpose by the party.

The committee is headed by Senator Joshua Lidani.

Emerging from his interview with the panel which lasted about 30 minutes, Aiyedatiwa exuded optimism about his chances in the primary election.

Beaming with smiles, the governor said:”My screening has just been done this morning and all documents that were submitted had to be verified and questions asked where some were not too clear to the screening committee.

“Questions were asked and answered and at the end of the day, I have been cleared that there are no issues, especially the issue that has to do with the certificate that a petition was written.

“Today, that has been put to rest. My certificates are genuine and authentic. I think it’s just a kind of mischief by some other aspirants who find me to be the aspirant to beat trying to look for a way to discredit my person. But that has been verified and put to rest.”

The governor, who said he bore no grudge against anyone, advised his political opponents to repent and go to the field rather than looking for fault where there was none.

“I just want to advise them to repent and try to go to the field and work. If they are interested in the seat, and the seat is not even vacant, that is why they’re trying to do all that they are doing,” he said.

Confronted moments later about the governor’s ‘no vacancy’ statement, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, said: “He’s joking. It is a big joke. He can’t continue in government with P8, P7.

“The governor is joking; a big joke, a huge joke he is cracking with you. He is out of that place by the time we finish primary next week; he is gone and there is nothing virtually he can do about it.

“I don’t normally go against people. To me, clear everybody, let them go for primary, let the electorate determine. I have won the election as senator, I won in six of the six local governments, 65 of the 66 wards, with 111,677 votes against Agboola Ajayi’s 60,000 votes.

“What is the governor talking about? This governor has never won an election. He contested for the House of Representatives, he didn’t win one local government; just two local governments, he couldn’t even win one.

“He was paired with Aketi, we didn’t vote for him, we voted for Aketi. But I can assure you, the governor is a huge joker.”

On his part, Chief Oke described Aiyedatiwa’s statement as a mere wish and desire”.

He added: “It’s an aphorism from all incumbent persons. I heard this one in Lagos when (Akinwunmi) Ambode was there. Ambode said ‘no vacancy.’

“He had to leave when he needed to leave. It’s a statement of wish and desire by the governor and it’s a statement that is intended to undermine a democratic exercise.

“If we are going to primaries and the people will have to determine, how would anybody have the guts to say there is no vacancy?

“There is no vacancy between now and February next year, no doubt. But after February, his one-year term will be exhausted and then there’ll be a vacancy.

“I don’t intend to take over from him before the expiration of his one year in office. So, the essence of this exercise is that there will be a vacancy after one one-year term and that he or somebody else will occupy the seat.

“Having regard to my wide contact with the people, I believe that I’m succeeding him.”

Oke hailed the screening committee for diligently performing its assignment and said: “They have done their job the way they ought to do it. I had no reason to anticipate even before the screening that anything would come up.

“I am a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and I have no certificates issue. Their own is merely to confirm what we have claimed. I’ve been a member of the National Assembly. They won’t deny me that. I’ve been a national officer of a political party, and they will not dispute that.

“So everything that I’ve given in my forms is true to the facts. I know no screening committee can disqualify that in the first place. But they’ve done their job thoroughly diligently, and I like that.”

APC group accuses Aiyedatiwa of printing fake membership slip

A group in APC – Ondo Vanguards for Good Governance – yesterday alleged plot by Governor Aiyedatiwa to manipulate the party primary by producing fake membership register and cards ahead of the primary.

The group claimed that fake membership slips of the APC have been printed for onward distribution to persons who are not members of the party.

Coordinator of the group, Evangelist Tade Ojo, said in Akure that Aiyedatiwa’s supporters had seen the handwriting on the wall about his imminent defeat hence their resort to self help.

He pleaded with APC leaders to ensure a level playing ground for all the contestants to avoid hurting the chances of the party in the November election and meeting “the desire of the good people of Ondo State for a new lease of life through purposeful leadership and good governance.”

He added:”Ondo State is larger than all of us, including Governor Ayedatiwa. We are convinced that they are prepared to spill the milk, if they cannot have it.”

In his reaction, spokesman for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers (LACO-FS), Kayode Fasua, said the allegations were made by faceless people sponsored by ‘jittery aspirants ‘.

“The primary election is an internal affair of the APC and the party leadership is independent of government. Before the party, all aspirants, including the governor, are equal in treatment; regarding campaigns and the internal electoral process.

“Therefore, Governor Aiyedatiwa or his supporters are far removed from this lie of printing fake membership cards, as alleged by jittery aspirants hiding behind fingers.

“Again, the allegation of the governor unleashing terror or destroying billboards is trite and unappealing to the public because the police have never for once heard of such complaint much less arrest anyone.

“They should go drink some water and sleep for their enviously frayed nerves. Hardworking Governor Aiyedatiwa has overtaken them.”

Among the beneficiaries were monarchs, religious leaders, transport unions, including National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and others.

Those present at the distribution centre were a Muslim leader, Alhaji Yusuf Olajide, a Christian leader, Pastor Gbelela, local government executives of All Progressives Congress (APC) and representatives from the 66 wards across the district.

  • Ibrahim: I  told Akeredolu about my ambition

Ibrahim: I  told Akeredolu about my ambition

The lawmaker representing Ondo South, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has said he told the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of his desire to govern the state from 2024.

He said he informed Akeredolu in the presence of his wife, Betty.

Ibrahim said: “I told Aketi before he died in the presence of his wife in their home in Ibadan when they returned from Germany that I wanted to contest for the governorship election and he said I should go ahead. That he would support me.”

Speaking at a media parley in Akure, Ondo State capital, Senator Ibrahim expressed optimism that his ‘Aseyori, breakthrough’ strategy would give him victory at the party’s primaries and in the main election.

He said he remained the most educated and qualified among the aspirants seeking the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ibrahim said he will not defect from the party if he loses at the primary election.

He said he needed to use his nine degrees and brain to help Ondo State.

Ibrahim added: “I think this is time I have to really sort out human problems in this state.

“My programmes are very straightforward. We are to create moral efficiency and moral knowledge and make the body more efficient. We must also map Ondo State borders for security network and then to ensure that we will never have cases of kidnapping, by making Amotekun a unique security outfit that will come with good strategy to challenge security issues in our state.

“So, one of the areas we are looking at is to ensure everybody in Ondo State can go to sleep with their eyes closed and that’s topmost in our priority. Mapping every system, the tactical operations of Amotekun have to become more distinct in technology, I want an Amotekun that is IT informed because I have PhD in War.

“So we need to do more of IT, our government will ensure Amotekun is IT compliant through strategy and renovation and it is going to be well funded to ensure Ondo State people can go and sleep.

“We are going to face infrastructural development by making sure we create employment through that. So we should expect the Bitumen Act that I’m moving at the Senate, which is now at the third reading to be more prominent and classic in engagement.

“Also in the North, we are going to do swap contracts; we are not going to spend kobo to do our roads. Also, the civil service will be very top, instrumental that will run the government to ensure they are computerised. We are to give powers to commissioners to make them powerful so that they will not be running after the governor for any approval.

“Olusola Oke and I didn’t have any agreement about any election, whether I will run for governor or not. And I already have my strategy to win the election without anybody. I even sent text message to him about this and he replied me that ‘my brother, the past is gone and you know how things went.’ So, if I’m contesting now, it is my constitutional right to do so and if I don’t do so, it is my constitutional right again to support the right candidate of my choice.

“Oke is my brother and I don’t run any aspirant or candidate down. I only face the programmes that I want to do. So I have already completed my research programme in Cambridge on how to win election. I used my money to fund my strategy to win the senatorial election and I wasn’t taken to any court.

“After the primaries, there will be a booklet on what we will do in the first six months, one year and so on. It is not necessary that I need to go and meet NEPA before Ondo State can have electricity. At the Cambridge where I studied for six years, we generated our electricity by wind and solar, so we have solar farms there and others. There are so many ways to get electricity. We might decide to map the state entirely in order to have electricity.

“And if we have security first, if we can be secured individually, we will secure the state. So, I’m saying now that Amotekun will have the highest attention in terms of information technology, I am an expert in security, I may not wear military uniform. When I become the governor, we must have resident card, we will know all your data. So, in this election, we are giving out 600,000 Aseyori card.

“Maybe the death of Aketi has enhanced my chances because Aketi was a human being, he could be subjectively objective at the last minute. But now that he is no more, that possibility is written off completely. So whoever is there, wants to run for governor, will meet me at the field.

Read Also: Dollarisation: EFCC raises 14 task forces, arrests racketeers

“So Aketi’s death doesn’t affect my chances at all, but it will enhance my chances to win the governorship position of this state. So we are working seriously to win this election. And the President will never say that we should go and work for the incumbent governor. He can only appeal that maybe he prefers one person, if you can prefer him and if you cannot, go and do your election. So the President cannot say that I have taken this person so all of you should go and sit down.

“I don’t use people’s names to campaign, my campaigns are very proud of my work. I’m not a desperate politician, I only want to help my state, if I get it I will develop the state and if you give it to somebody else, I’m not going to die. So we are combing the strategy.

“And if I’m not contesting in this election, then my support to anybody is based on your credentials because I am an academic person. If people are doubting your ordinary school certificate, it will be difficult for me to support you. We are talking about development of the state at this time because things are bad. People get degrees but they don’t have jobs, they are just roaming about the streets.

“I want to develop Ondo State, I just want to contribute and if it is not possible, no problem, you get your destiny from where you go to.

“And the idea of primary is not something that we can start thinking from negative, and I don’t fear primary election and I don’t lobby anybody, I don’t go to say give me direct primary. Either direct or indirect primary, no problem. If it is indirect primary, we will come with new strategies, strategies are never ending. We are not against anybody, but come to the field you will meet us there.”

He spoke against the background of the statement credited to him that the President will lose in the northeast.

The senator reportedly made the statement durig the presentation of his book in Abuja at the weekend.

But in a statement by his media adviser Yusuf Ali, the Yobe East senator said the president would win the election conveniently

“As far as I am alive, there is nothing that will make Buhari fail in the North East. Not in Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, or Taraba. There is no way he will lose the election. By the grace of God, Buhari will win the election and serve his second term.

“I Bukar Abba, I am in APC now, tomorrow I will be in APC by the grace of God. I will forever be in APC, if they don’t change the party. Nothing will separate me with my party the APC”.

The senator, Yusuf added, said he fought hard to build the APC hence he would not desert the party under any circumstance.

He said it was him and Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the then Chairman of the ANPP, that first initiated the merger for the mega party of the opposition to form the APC and save the country from the PDP.

Describing the Senator as  ”an slder statesman in his own right who does not deserve to be called unprintable names”, Yusuf said it was obvious the three-time lawmaker was quoted out of context, noting that  ”he has pledged his support for the APC and Buhari in the 2019 general election.”
