    Ibrahim: I remain PDP candidate

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Jimoh Ibrahim yesterday faulted the Court of Appeal verdict which nullified his candidacy as not having a ‘consequential order.”

Ibrahim described the Appeal Court judgment as “one day ruling”, adding that the Supreme Court would sit on the case today (Thursday)

“I have read the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered today (yesterday) without a consequential order. The ruling failed to specifically say that my name should be substituted by INEC.

“Since there is no consequential order directing INEC to do so, the judgement is therefore not binding on me and INEC cannot remove my name and as such I remain PDP candidate for Saturday’s election.

“But we are optimistic that we have nothing to lose as the Supreme Court sits on same case tomorrow. We shall get justice at the Supreme Court and if PDP wins Saturday’s election, we shall have our four-year mandate to rule Ondo State

“Let me advise the good people of Ondo State and my supporters nationwide not to abuse anyone or fight over this one day ruling …

“Mimiko will not succeed himself with Jegede. This is too sure as we continue with our work and remain in our great part, PDP. I love the great people of Ondo State and I thank you all for continuous support.”

    •Akeredolu shuns debate

Candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) Olusola Oke and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart Jimoh Ibrahim yesterday disagreed on the use of security votes by governors.
The duo and Olu Agunloye of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) spoke at a debate jointly organised by Channels Television, Enough Is Enough (EIE), and Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) for the Ondo State governorship candidates ahead of Saturday’s election.
All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Rotimi Akeredolu did not show up.
The Akeredolu Campaign Platform said he was “tucked in the deep riverine communities.”
Ibrahim described security vote as a fraud, saying he would not spend government funds to protect himself while his people remained vulnerable.
But Oke said it would not be abolished, adding that he would retain the fund, but reduce the amount.
The AD candidate promised to be transparent and accountable in the administration of the security votes.
“There are things the governor does on security that cannot go through the bureaucracy,” he said.
On tax, Agunloye said the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) being collected means extorting money from citizens in form of taxes without providing services.
He promised to ensure that the government provided services that would generate revenue.
Agunloye described the recession in Ondo State as a result of corruption. “We have no business with recession,” he added
Ibrahim vowed to eradicate all forms of taxes.
“You don’t take money from workers who are owned salaries for several months. We are going to eliminate personal income tax,” he said.
Oke assured that in three months, citizens would begin to see changes in the economy adding that personal income tax “is statutory.”
Ibrahim promised to provide employment, saying it would take just three days to create a company.
“The government has no business privatising companies in Ondo a State,” he said.
Agunloye said he would pay backlog of salaries in the first few months of taking over office. He added that his government would make the welfare of the people a priority.
Oke said decried unemployment in the state, saying it has assumed an “epidemic” proportion.

Ondo: Sheriff, Ibrahim move to stop Appeal Court’s reserved judgment

The Supreme Court has been asked to disband the special panel constituted by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa to determine appeals relating to disputes over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

The apex court is also asked to invoke its disciplinary powers to penalise members of the panel – Justices Ibrahim Saulawa (head of the panel), Ignatius Agube and Goerge Mbaba – for continuing to conduct proceedings in the cases despite the pendency of a motion for stay of proceedings before the Supreme Court.

The requests formed part of the prayers contained in fresh applications filed before the Supreme Court yesterday by leaders of the PDP in the South West led by Biyi Poroye of Ondo State PDP.

The applications are marked: SC/ 947/2016 and SC/952/2016.

They also seek an order of the Supreme Court invoking its disciplinary jurisdiction to set aside the proceedings of the panel on November 16, 2016 in appeals marked: CA/A/551/2016 and CA/A/551C/2016.

The appeals are those filed by substituted candidate of the PDP in Ondo, Eyidtayo Jegede (SAN) and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party, Ahmed Makarfi and its Secretary, Ben Obi.

The panel had, on November 16 proceeded to hear the substantive appeal by Jegede and elected to hear the substantive appeal by Makarfi and Obi the next day despite the pendency of a motion for stay of proceedings at the lower court before the Supreme Court.

In the applications filed yesterday, Poroye and others also asked the Supreme Court to restrain members of the panel from further “proceedings (including the delivery of any reserved judgment)in the lower court in the two appeals marked: CA/A/551/2016 and CA/A/551C/2016, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for stay o proceedings pending before the apex court.

They applicants urged the apex court to order members of the panels to desist from further conducting proceedings “on the ground that they have betrayed their oath of office in their deliberate refusal to be bound by the principles of judicial precedent and stare decisis and refused to be bound by their own Rulings delivered on November, 8,2016 in appeal marked:  CA/A/402/2016: Peoples Democratic Party v. Chief Benson Akingboye and ors, and CA/A/402A/2016 by Sen Ahmed Makarfi vsChief Benson Akingboye and ors.”

They argued that the panel’s continued conduct of proceedings despite being aware of an appeal pending at the Supreme Court, the pendidncy of a motion for stay of proceedings and the fact that the appeal had been entered, amounted to ” flagrant and blatant breach of the doctrine of lis pendens, stare decisis and violation of required respect of the Supreme Court.”

The panel at the Court of Appeal proceeded to consider more appeals yesterday.

One of the appeals heard was that filed by Makarfi and Obi, in which they are challenging the June 29 judgment by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Abang had, in the judgment recognised the Ali Modu Sheriff group as the authentic leaders of the party.

Yesterday, the panel entertained arguments from parties after they adopted their appellants and respondents’ briefs.

Justice Saulawa subsequently announced that judgment had been reserved and the date will be communicated to parties.

Ibrahim: I’ll restore power in Ondo South

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Jimoh Ibrahim, has promised to restore power in the six councils in the Southern Senatorial District within the first three months of his administration.

The businessman spoke yesterday during his campaign tour of local governments in the area.

He decried the performance of the Olusegun Mimiko administration, particularly on the protracted power outage in the Southern District.

For over three years, towns such as Oke-Igbo, Ore, Odigbo, Okitipupa, Irele, Ode-Aye, Ajapa, Akotogbo, Igbokoda, Igbotako, Ilutitun had been cut off the National Grid by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The candidate, who spoke at the palace of Jegun of Idepe, Oba Micheal Adetoye, in Okitipupa Local Government canvassed for votes of electorate in the forthcoming poll.

Ibrahim had visited the palace of Abodi of Ikoya, Oba Faduyile, where he promised to reintroduce the boarding system to government owned secondary schools.

The PDP candidate, who hails from Igbotako in Okitipupa Local Government, noted that he deliberately began his campaign in Okitipupa to re-awaken the consciousness of his people.

  • How far can Ibrahim go?

    How far can Ibrahim go?

The emergence of multi-billionaire businessman Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State was a political masterstroke, which caught many observers by surprise. Be that as it may, Ibrahim, who emerged, following the order of an Abuja Federal High Court that he was the authentic candidate, has a number of challenges to surmount to realise his ambition of succeeding Governor Olusegun Mimiko. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN examines his chances at the poll.

As the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State draws closer, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to have a clear direction. In line with the crisis rocking the party at the national level, the Ondo chapter is polarised into two factions: the mainstream group, led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is loyal to the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, while the Biyi Poroye-led faction is loyal to the embattled Ali Modu-Sheriff-led National Executive Committee. The two groups have been at loggerheads over which of them should present the party’s candidate for the poll. The immediate past Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), the candidate of the Makarfi group while a business mogul, Chief Ibrahim Jimoh, is the candidate of the Sheriff faction.

Based on the order of an Abuja Federal High Court presided over Justice Okon Abang, Ibrahim is the officially-recognised candidate. In the ruling, Justice Abang re-affirmed its earlier judgment that Sheriff is the authentic PDP chairman and, as a corollary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should substitute the name of Jegede, who had earlier been submitted to it with that of Ibrahim.

But, observers believe that it is not yet uhuru for Ibrahim, who has been nursing the ambition of ruling Sunshine State over the years. To begin with, it is widely believed that he has no structure to prosecute the election. Indeed, his membership of the PDP in Ondo State is still a subject of controversy. The Makarfi group in the state disowned the business mogul, shortly after he collected his governorship nomination form from the Sheriff faction, saying he had left the fold.

The group’s Director of Publicity, Mr Ayo Fadaka, said Ibrahim had left the party for the Accord Party. Fadaka said: “While I am not disputing the fact that when Ibrahim was a member of the PDP, he was a pillar of support, but that was in the past; he wilfully moved from the party to the Accord Party and it is too late in the day to return now and immediately vie for the governorship of the state. There must be decorum in the way politics is played in this country or else we will be bereft of standard.”

The Ondo State Chairman of the group, Mr. Clement Faboyede, faulted the process through which Ibrahim emerged. He said the primary through which he emerged as candidate was neither held in Ondo State, nor supervised by INEC. He also noted that Ibrahim had dumped the party for Accord Party and that, having spent most of his life in Lagos and Abuja in pursuant of his business interests, he doesn’t relate with the people of Ondo State.

He said: “How do you expect someone who is not acquainted with the problems of Ondo to become the governor? Who are his followers? There is no member of the state executive council of the PDP supporting his candidacy; the governor and members of the state executive are against him. We will resist any attempt to impose a candidate on Ondo PDP.”

However, the Chairman of the Sheriff faction, Mr. Biyi Poroye, believes Ibrahim is the candidate to beat. Poroye said the judgment that threw the business mogul up as the party’s candidate is a favourable one and could only be upturned by a superior court of law. He said the judgment proved that his faction of the PDP was the authentic one.

He added: “If they said the judgment does not affect them why did they appeal? We don’t have issues with one another in the party; we have issues with INEC and the court has told the electoral body that Jimoh Ibrahim is the candidate of the PDP in Ondo State. He went through the party primary and won. We submitted his name and that of his running mate to INEC. We are in full support of our candidate (Ibrahim) and we will back him to victory.”

The journey of the Igbotako-born businessman to occupy the Alagbaka Government House started in 2003, when he contested for the position on the platform of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). After the failed attempt, he went back to the drawing board and part of the strategies he came up with was to pitch his tent with the PDP.

In spite of the fact that Ibrahim is the PDP candidate that enjoys the recognition of INEC, observers are of the view that he has a long way to go in his bid to govern the state.  For instance, they say he is yet to start campaigning for votes for an election that will hold in about two weeks time. On the other hand, Jegede and his campaign team, despite the legal tussle over the party’s ticket, have stepped up their campaign across the state.

A member of the Markafi group, Chief Adetiba Aladesoun, said Ibrahim is not contesting to win the governorship election, but to frustrate Jegede, who is the choice of the party. He said Ibrahim cannot win in his local government, not to talk of the other 17 local governments. “I blame the current development on the crisis that has polarised the PDP,” he added.

Aladesoun said if the court finally endorsed Ibrahim as the PDP flag bearer, the party should forget the election. He said: “Ibrahim is not on ground. He has no political structure. His human relations are very poor. He is not in touch with the grassroots. Who will vote for him? If you go round Ondo State, there is nothing to suggest that Ibrahim is in the race. His campaign is yet to take off.

“If Ibrahim is foisted on us as PDP candidate, they can’t force us to vote for him. I can assure you that there will be mass defection from the PDP to other parties. Our members are just waiting for the Appeal Court judgment. Ibrahim is not on the same page with Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the party elders in the state and the party executive in Ondo. Tell me who will support him to win the election. The truth is that Ibrahim’s candidacy is dead on arrival.”

Besides, the PDP candidate’s attempt to solicit for the support of workers has received wide criticism. Against the background of how he has been running his business and how he treats his workers, he drew the ire of his opponents when he promised to clear the backlog of salaries being owed civil servants in the state within 100 days.

He said: “I will restructure the state in the area of capacity building, good innovation and by putting the right thing in the right place at the right time. I will pay the workers within the first day of my 100 days in office. Non-payment of salaries by the state government is the failure of innovation of states by governors. It is when you are innovative that you will be able to pay salaries. The governors who owe are not efficient. I don’t owe any of my workers. “

His critics say Ibrahim is the least qualified to manage the affairs of the state, because according to them, most of his businesses have either been ran aground or struggling to survive. They argue that if he had skills of turning around the state economy, it should reflect in the management of his businesses.

A lawyer, Mr. Akin Omodara, said Ibrahim has a style of acquiring businesses and put them on the slaughter. He mentioned Air Nigeria, Nigeria Re-Insurance Corporation, NICON Insurance and Newswatch publishing company  among business outfits acquired by the Harvard-trained lawyer that are no more in operation.

Omodara said if Ibrahim had failed to manage his business empire successfully, the people of Ondo should not entrust their fate in his hands. He said: “Many Nigerians who worked in the failed enterprises owned by him have lost their means of livelihood, due to bad management.”

He questioned the managerial acumen of Ibrahim. His words: “He should tell us why most of his business enterprises have gone under; he should stop raising false hope; the Ondo people know that he has failed to manage his personal business well. Let him not make promises that he cannot fulfil.”

A PDP chieftain, Mr Alex Oloruntoba, said Ibrahim is deceiving the people. According to him, Ibrahim should stop casting aspersion on Mimiko, who has done his best in transforming the state.

He said: “I was amazed when Ibrahim promised to pay outstanding workers’ salaries within the first 100 days in office. If he can do that why can’t he perform this feat in his companies; why does he owe his staff? He should start with his workers by paying the backlog of salary. Let his charity begin from his business environment.”

When Ibrahim shut down Air Nigeria on September 16, 2012, he promised that it will be for one year. After three years, Air Nigeria is still grounded. Defending his action, Ibrahim said he bought Air Nigeria with his money and that it was left for him to do whatever he likes with it.

Ibrahim added: “Nigerians should learn how to appreciate people. The aim of the controversies was to bring us down, but we are too big to fall. If the government of Nigeria today, withdraws all my businesses, I will rebuild them in few days. We are in Dubai, United States, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Sao Tome and in this great country, Nigeria. If we have 16 companies and one dies, we are still on ‘A’ grade. Why should the corporate surgeon be crucified for the one that died? Why don’t we ask questions about the success of the 15 which have employed 21,000 people and pay salary of over N4 billion. It’s not a joke. We don’t owe salaries.

“I love Nigeria; I have passion for this country; I believe in Nigeria. If not because of few threats here and there, I won’t locate business outside. But I must, because my entrepreneurial skill will be deemed to be local, if I don’t have businesses outside the country. Our investment in some countries is bigger than what we have in Nigeria.”

Analysts say unless the PDP factions settle their differences and go to the poll on November 26 as a united body, the chances of the party winning is very slim, because none of them can do it alone.

    •Buhari endorses Akeredolu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the forthcoming Ondo State governorship election, Rotimi Akeredolu was on Monday confident that he can win the two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants, Jimoh Ibrahim and Eyitayo Jegede, put together.

He spoke with State House correspondents after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari along with Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Akeredolu said: “l can always tell you, people who know me, they know that I talk most times with some confidence, let me assure you here that by the grace of God, we will win the election in Ondo state.

“I can assure you I would have been happier facing both of them together, if Eyitayo Jegede was chosen as candidate and Ibrahim as his deputy, I will still win.

“Infact Jegede happens to be a friend, Ibrahim too. Jimoh Ibrahim went to Ife, so we have known ourselves for long. I have no fear about both of them. We know that we are going to win this election and I have no doubt.” He added

When asked to speak on efforts to settle the rift between him and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, he denied any rift with Tinubu.

He said: “I don’t have any rift with him, since the primaries you would see that as leader of the party, he has not said anything about it. He has accepted the primaries and we are moving on. So, I don’t have any rift with him at all and we are moving on.”

He said that his party in the state has already called on the security agencies in Ondo to be up and doing in order not to allow miscreants take over the state in the name of protests.

He said: “Because for instance as a governor you encourage lawlessness or people in the guise of protest because what the PDP has is a problem within the party, that should not lead to demonstration outside and you know that people are not demonstrating for any reason but because they have been more or less paid to come and do it.

“What we said is don’t allow miscreants to be out. Nobody can control the end of such demonstration. So its not that we are afraid, but we fear for the life and property of the people of Ondo state.” He stated

Speaking on the visit to the President, Lalong said: “A few weeks ago I was given the responsibility of leading the campaign on behalf of the National Executive for the Ondo election. And the candidate since election at the primaries have not come to be presented to the leader of our party, that is Mr President.

“So today we came in with the candidate and to confirm to the President that APC has only one candidate unlike other parties that are fighting about who is their candidate.

“We have only one candidate and that candidate is Chief Akeredolu Rotimi(SAN).” He said he was optimistic that the APC will win the election.

He said: “Well that is not a problem to APC, since inception you knew what happened in Kogi, you knew what happened in Edo, we won the elections. It was as if it was going to be very difficult for us but we won the elections.

“Today again we are going into Ondo, all the mistake we made in other states we have corrected them, we are seeing a very smooth election, not only a smooth election but the credibility of the candidate itself is something worth selling.” He said

The governor also faulted the visit of the out-going Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to President Buhari last Friday.

According to him, Mimiko should have concentrated on resolving the crisis that erupted in his state.

He said: “Let me say it was even wrong for them to start running to Mr President to help them solve the problem of PDP in their party. Mr. President is the President of Nigeria and he is not a member of PDP. Even when we have problems in APC, we don’t run to Mr President.

“If he has a problem in his state, he is the governor, let him stay there and resolve the matter. Its a matter between PDP and PDP and those matters are in court. So why should you run to the President. Is the President the chief judge of Nigeria?” He queried

He went on: “He is not the INEC chairman either. Well Mr. President is a loyal party man. So he is answerable to the party although the president of Nigeria.”

On the response of President Buhari to the visit, Lalong said: “He has also confirmed that he has seen the candidate and is also praying for a successful election in Ondo State.”

3SC’s Ajani Ibrahim has rued the death of the Oluyole Warriors’ defender, Izu Joseph who was reportedly killed in his home town while on holiday at the end of the 2015/2016 NPFL season.

Izu died on his way to the hospital and Ibrahim who disclosed that he was very close to the former Bayelsa United player, said the Ibadan side have lost a rare gem that worked very hard to ensure that the Oluyole Warriors avoided relegation.

“I was pained when I heard about the death of Izu. It was a sad end to a fine footballer who has several years ahead of him,” said Ibrahim.

“He was a good player and was part of the players that ensured that we were not relegated. I pray that God should give his family the fortitude to bear the loss and I will also like the police to fish out whoever is behind the killing.”

    Ibrahim calls defeats title setback

Wikki Tourists right-back Mustapha Ibrahim has described the two straight losses at FC IfeanyiUbah and Nasarawa United as a huge setback for the side’s title chase.

The Bauchi-based side lost their clash at the Nnewi outfit, as well as the match against the Solid Miners at an adopted ground, the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi.

Ibrahim said that his side can still turn things around positively by winning the three remaining matches on the calendar.

“The two losses at FC IfeanyiUbah and Nasarawa United are  huge setbacks on our dream to become champions at the end of the ongoing top-flight.

“It’s really demoralising and painful losing  six points at this critical stage of the season.

“However, we strongly believe that the remaining three matches on the calendar can actually redefine and reshape the whole scenario.

“It’s still not a totally hopeless situation for us to realise our dream of becoming the champions at the end of the day, once we are able to garner the whole nine points at stake.

“Of course, nothing is impossible or foreclosed, that’s why we are happy with the new form of Ikorodu United.

“Teams that thought Ikorodu United are walkovers will have to rethink all over again.

“I see the Lagos outfit single-handedly decide with the superlative performance of late who wins the league shield.

“We just hope Ikorodu United will not relent as more of the stunning victories in the remaining matches will greatly help our cause.

“On our part we are not going to relent on our effort but push harder to win the other matches.

“I believe the hope for a league title is alive – we will not give up until the last whistle so that we cannot miss the title as well as ticket to Africa at the same time.

“We will be satisfied with a ticket to Africa if we miss the league crown,” the former Nigerian junior strongman told supersport.com.

Wikki Tourists are fourth on the top-flight log on 51 points, five behind league leaders Rivers United.

Ibrahim insists Wikki will be champs

Wikki Tourists captain and right back, Mustapha Ibrahim has assured that his side will shortly be back at the summit in the on-going top-flight.

The Bauchi outfit fell to the second spot on the log after a massive 0-3 defeat at Akwa United in Sunday’s top-flight matchday 29 clash in Uyo.

Ibrahim said his side have pushed behind them the loss at Akwa United to focus on winning the next game against Lobi Stars.

“Of course, the second spot is not where we are supposed to be at the moment but we know why and that’s the reason we have pushed behind us the defeat at Akwa United to focus 100% on the clash against Lobi Stars.

“The drop to the second position is temporary as we see it as one of the challenges on our path to become champions at the end of the season.

“We are preparing adequately for Lobi Stars as well as the next away clash at Nasarawa United aimed at recording convincing wins.

“Of course, we will be champions it’s not an impossibility not even the loss at Akwa United can change it.

“We have told our teeming fans not to panic, the loss has come and gone. We have to forge ahead.

“The position at the top will change at the end of matchday 30 clashes among the front runners.

“We have good goal advantage and will possibly occupy the second position if Rangers and Rivers United win their respective matches.

“So there is no cause for worry we will climb back to the top and keep it that way till the end of the season,” said the Wikki Tourists strongman to supersport.com.
